Depends on the point in the timeline. For much of FF4 it was proving himself worthy of trust, and to get back at Golbez (and later Zemus) for the whole brainwashing thing.

TaY was ‘I gotta beat the darkness’ then it was ‘fuck my planet is going to get destroyed. It’s really dependent.

Utricularia: Five things your character likes.

First, he likes quiet mornings.  Just before dawn, when things are still.  I mean, he likes quiet in general, but it’s something special to him.

Second, he likes good camaraderie.  To see people working together just makes him happy, whether it’s with him, against him, or nothing to do with him.

Third, he likes the feel of the wind.  It’s comforting, and it’s somewhat of a pride booster of his.  It just feels good.

Fourth, he likes the smell and feel of well-kept armour and weapons.  They bear the marks of commitment, affection, and determination.

And finally, he likes cold temperatures.  Especially on frigid nights, you’ll find him chasing his thoughts in the cold, because low temperatures are grounding and help lend clarity.

The air carried a chill as it ghosted through Edward’s hair-- or maybe it wasn’t so cold, but it was at least moreso than it was in Damcyan, so he felt justified for his distress.  He loved it, strangely.  There was a poetic allure to a frigid bite, even as it seeped mercilessly through flesh to bone.

Cecil and the others had hardly returned from the moon, but there was so much to do.  There just wasn’t time for a break.  Though Edward’s business in Eblan was intended to be diplomatic, he didn’t see why it had to be formal.  From what he remembered of its ruler, ‘formal’ was the last thing he expected.

So at least he wouldn’t feel bad for letting his thoughts wander while he waited to meet with Edge, because that’s exactly what happened.
