Started playing the Dragon Quest games on mobile in order! Before doing this, I've only finished one DQ to completion and that was DQ Builders 2 years ago, a big fave. I was so happy while playing DQ2 that it's world was the basis for Builders 2!
TBH I didn't know anything about DQ outside slimes and what I played from Builders. It's been a joy reliving a game series I didn't know had sequels past 1 during the NES days.

Prince of Cannock and Krillin’s favorite place to chill:
I don’t want to talk about Pokémon. Let’s talk about Dragon Quest.
Have you seen him?

Why do you think the scions are the 'scions of Erdrick' and not the 'scions of Alef'? They're more closely related to Alef.
You can call them what you like. Like, Alef is a name only used in adaptations like the CD drama and the novelisations so I don't refer to his game incarnation as that, i call him the hero of Alefgard, the hero of Tantegel, or just the first hero.
In fact, Dragon Quest Monster Battle Road Victory, which mostly uses the names the heroes are known as, calls the first hero ロトの血を引く者参 (Roto no chi o hiku monosan) which is like 'Roto's (Erdrick's) descendant' or if you'd like you could use the word 'scion' you could also translate it as 'scion of Erdrick.'
youtube
I'm not actually sure where the name 'scions of Erdrick' for the DQ2 party is used.
If we look at DQMBRV again, they're just individually named as ローレシアの王子 (Rōreshia no ōji) or prince of Midenhall, サマルトリアの王子 (Samarutoria no ōji) or prince of Cannock, and ムーンブルクの王女 (Mūnburuku no ōjo) or princess of Moonbrooke. Then it refers to them collectively as 勇者たち (yūsha-tachi) or 'heroes.'
youtube
Meanwhile, some appearances of the hero of DQ2, such as the clip from DQ2 seen in the true credits of DQ11, use the name ろらん (Roran) which some think comes from the Japanese name for Midenhall, ローレシア (Rōreshia).
But, if you want to use the CD drama and novelisation names like Alef, the hero of DQ2 gets called アレン (Aren) or Allen there.
Point is, the names used officially get changed up sometimes so really call them whatever you want. I think Dragon Quest fans will probably know who you mean if you say 'scions of Alef'.
ANYWAY, sorry for that tangent. To answer your actual question, I think it's probably because Erdrick is the big iconic figure in the first three games. I mean those games are called the Erdrick trilogy after all. It's like yeah they're descended from the first hero but more importantly they're descended from Erdrick the legendary hero. The game is even called Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line in reference to the bloodline of Erdrick.
(Hey! There's another thing you could call them: 'luminaries of the legendary line.' Yeah that's a mouthful but technically it's an official English name.)

RPG Role Analysis Series #13 - Chrono Trigger
Crono - Crono is typical of JRPG protagonists, versatile warriors with access to magic. Right away, Crono can use his physical skills to deal damage to multiple enemies at once, and later can do damage-dealing light attacks and raise party members (but cannot otherwise buff or heal them). He kind of reminds me of the Prince of Cannock from Dragon Quest II in that he has access to damaging magic and Raise, but is less focused on healing (though Crono cannot do it at all). Raise, however, does not fully heal party members on resurrection like Arise does (which Marle can use). Given the use of holy damage, resurrection, relentless physical attacks that can focus down a single enemy by hitting them four times in a row, and luck-blessed top-level weaponry that vastly increases his chance to critical hit, Crono feels like a paladin, but more the smiting/venegeance kind than the healing/inspiring kind.
Marle - Despite being the best single-target healer in the game, and the only character other than the protagonist to be able to revive, I would consider Marle a red mage archetype, though with a strong focus on healing and ice damage specifically. A red mage that's more white than black. A pink mage perhaps? But, if you look at her spell list, besides three scaled versions of Cure, and Arise, Marle also gets damage-dealing Ice, both single and multi-target, and a single-target Confuse-inflicting spell, so her detrimental magic takes up a significant portion of her skill list, and some of her best bows inflict status effects as well. She also gets Haste, which is beneficial, but black mages had that ability in Final Fantasy, it allows other party members to kill enemies faster
Lucca - Lucca could be considered a black mage focused elementally on fire, quickly getting access to multi-target Fire and Sleep skills, and mostly just getting different variations on Fire skills from there, actually getting access to single-target Fire later on. She kind of reminds me of Vivian from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, actually. Besides this, she can use Protect to increase the physical Defense of a single ally.
Frog - Frog is more of a physical fighter, and has lower magic stats, but interestingly is the only party member to be able to have access to the Water element. He has some healing skills, including Cure II (large, single target) and Heal (multi-target), so is versatile in healing, but the lower stats can let down the amount of HP healed, and he cannot raise dead party members. Mostly, Frog does large single-target damage until his ultimate attack, which can hit everyone and deals more damage when he is hurt. Given his character, it's tempting to also read Frog as a sort of paladin type, but I think it somewhat fits, what with his healing being more useful to stabilize (more like blessing them with them the stamina to go on than spending much time being a medic) the party when necessary, and Frog Squash (his ultimate skill) being a sort of miracle he can call upon when the situation is dire. So maybe, Crono is more smite, and Frog is more bless.
Robo- Robo is a tank, taking the most damage, and dealing respectable damage. Besides this, Robo has both single, and all-party healing skills, though less effective than what Marle has access to. His attacks are single target only for physical attacks, but he has access to multi-target magic attacks of Shadow, Light, and Fire elements, which is notable, as all other party members have a single element, until Magus. Robo reminds me of a magic knight archetype, except perhaps statted to be a little bit more tankier, with high defense an low speed, than how you normally see them, which is typically with a higher focus on attack stats, leaving another character to boast the highest defenses. Robo is focused on physical stats, but has versatile "magic", but which is limited, healing skills by their effectiveness, and damaging skills by being limited to more expensive multi-target spells with no single-target option.
Ayla - Ayla cannot cast any magic, or equip any weapons, though her fists naturally upgrade as she levels up, and at very high levels can Confuse opponents or inflict max damage on a crit. She's the strongest physical attacker, and the second sturdiest next to Robo. She mostly gets damage dealing moves (both single and multi-target), and one of them, Dino Tail gets stronger as she has less HP, the kind of struggle mechanic you can sometimes see on martial artist types, which she is, though it's flavoured as the summoning of a dinosaur for one attack. Ayla gets two non-damaging skills, Kiss, which heals one target's health and status effects, which is kind of like Chakra can be used in Final Fantasy, also fitting a monk/martial artist, and Charm, which is actually an item-stealing skill, not a status effect, so Ayla is a monk/thief.
Magus - Magus is an elemental mage, notably getting access to multi-target magic attacks of every element in the game except water, and three different scaling techniques of the Shadow element, emphasizing his focus on darkness in particular. Magus two other skills, Barrier, which can increase the Magic Defense of a single ally, and Dark Mist, which attempts to insta-banish enemies. I would be tempted to call Magus a black mage, but thinking back to Final Fantasy I, a key feature of the black mage is status dealing and debuffing, whereas Magus has instead a beneficial shield spell as utility. A powerful damage-dealing wizard, sure, but Magus is more focused on fighting with magic than stacking all detrimental kind of magic, which is a bit different.
Lots of magic use in Chrono Trigger. They fully committed to having the first four characters have access to a single element each, despite this being a game where elemental damage doesn't feel that important. Then, they had two additional elemental generalists, and while Lucca and Robo are flavoured as having more tech-based skills, leaving only one slot for a character that doesn't overall match some kind of caster. I almost feel like Frog at least could have leaned even more physical, or Lucca or Robo's tech could have been more support-based to diversify the party feel, but the cast of Chrono Trigger is obviously great overall.

There is a reason I was thinking about classic Dragon Quest. I was paid for market research, and with that silly extra windfall after paying a couple of bills like a responsible adult I had $8 left so I got the DQ2 remake on the Switch. Aaaand I've already beaten it. To be fair, it is rather short but when you know what to do it doesn't take long.
I liked the remake. It didn't back off on the challenge, but it smoothed out the experience gain. You don't have to waste a lot of time in Rhone/Rendarak because the enemies drop a lot more XP. Perfect, elegant fix. Not sure how I feel about making the hidden stuff sparkly spots...but they were too cryptic back then honestly.
Otherwise, man I love this one. It's simple but the party have a lot of iconic character with very little pushing you that way. Simple flourishes like the Princess of Moonbrook shrugging off her curse once it's broken because she cares about the people and the Prince of Cannock's selflessness when stricken ill go a long way. It's still a great fusion of story and mechanics that holds up well.

also changed up the map! it looks better now, and it's the actual tileset I was looking for instead of a remake of it.

I guess as a preface: I love DQ2, it holds a very special place in my heart like whatever game YOU picked up between the ages of maybe 7 and 12 that you enjoyed but wasn’t really designed for children.
But the game is EVIL.
The game padded its length out by being balls-to-the-wall difficult (especially instant death percentages and 2-hit monsters), with huge gaps between places to save (there’s a few notable spots where you need to be prepared to go well over an hour without any place to save or heal with the difficulty curve the way it is), huge overland hikes to specific dungeons, and giving little to no advice in the way of where to find vital items (some of which was an attempt to keep the number of a dialogue lines down, in a game from 1990 that takes up fewer KB than your tumblr avatar thumbnail. But it was ALSO to sell the guidebook, via the mail, which my family did end up buying.)
The GBC port and the Android port (which I finally caved and bought) are both extremely clunky in different ways, and make the game less difficult in some places but don’t improve others. It’s one of my favorite games and I can’t even recommend it to people because every single version is incredibly annoying to play.
DQ2 desperately needs a from-scratch remake with attention paid to graphics (I’d love it to look like DQ7 but I know what the odds of THAT happening are for a game that old) but also to spots where the QOL is hideously dated.
A tiny handful of the QOL updates that DQ2 desperately needs in a remake:
- a bag. oh holy shit a BAG. The android port doesn’t even have a bag you still have a fixed number of items you can carry and have to schlep back to civilization to get items out of item storage (another way they padded out the playtime).
- A spot to save/heal, if nowhere else in the game, on the hike between Moonbrooke and Rippleport. The oasis would be ideal and it could just be a save/heal/warp spot like the Rendarak monolith. There’s a few other spots (and a few dungeons that desperately need a spot to save even if it’s not free).
- The dialogue totally redone and some NPCs give substantially better advice on where to get the sigils/floodgate key/ra mirror/etc. Might even be useful to add an NPC to give specific advice on what to do next, like a fortune teller or something.
- I want party chat so badly, especially since the newer ports are so much more honest about how lazy and annoying the Prince of Cannock is.
- Some accessory, even late-game, to eliminate instant death attacks, even if you only get one.
In closing, this is a very crude map I made to show my loved one how far you walk from Moonahan to the Pillar of Winds, which you do fairly early in the game.
Tell me this does not fit your definition of evil, and it’s not even one of the evil parts of this game that I think needs changed!
Really hoping that someday, they will make a version of Dragon Quest 2 that isn't evil.
#admittedly this was a version i never played and they moved the bridges as you can see#stop b think of the children

Do you accept the name Rickerd and/or Princeton for the Prince of Cannock
NO to Princeton, but DQ Tact did warm me up to Rickerd. But to me, he’ll always be Prince of Cannock no matter how many times DQ2 tries to name him Kain.
