It's August 20th, 🌺 Hawaii Statehood Day. The US annexed Hawaii in 1898 during the Spanish-American War for strategic purposes and continued to maintain the islands as a military command post during World War II. Many Hawaii statehood bills were introduced in Congress through the years – the first one by Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole in 1919. It wasn't until 1959, though, that Congress finally approved a Hawaii statehood bill, after a referendum in which 94% of Hawaiian residents voted in favor of statehood. Many Native Hawaiians were opposed to statehood, though. They argued that America's initial acquisition of Hawaii was illegal and were in favor of Hawaiian sovereignty. There was also some resistance from the racist southern states who didn't like Hawaii's ethnic diversity.
Since 1969, we've been observing the third Friday in August as a state holiday to commemorate the anniversary of the day (which was actually Friday, August 21st) in 1959 that US President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the proclamation making Hawaii America's 50th state. As might be expected, though, the holiday is not without controversy and debate, as many argue that celebrating this day is culturally insensitive to Native Hawaiians. In consideration of this fact, Hawaii Statehood Day is mainly observed as a silent holiday with no big events held in honor of it. ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

You had me at Aloha. On this day in 1959, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a proclamation making Hawaii the 50th state. This came after multiple failed efforts, beginning with a 1919 bill from the Congressional non-voting representative of the Territory of Hawaii, Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole, and followed by additional attempts in 1935, 1947 and 1950. After the U.S. Congress approved the 1959 bill, 94% of Hawaii’s residents voted in favor of the referendum to support statehood. In recognition of the date, we’re digging into our archival closet for our aloha shirts, a mainstay of Hawaiian fashion since the late 1920s or early 1930s. The shirts originated with fabrics brought by a wave of Japanese, Chinese, and Filipino agricultural laborers that began immigrating to the islands in the early 20th century. The style became popular on the mainland United States after World War II, as returning servicemen and servicewomen that had been stationed in the Pacific re-christened them ‘Hawaiian shirts' and incorporated them into popular tiki-culture and exotica trends that had been fashionable in America since 1933, when Don's Beachcomber, a Polynesian-themed bar and restaurant, first opened in Hollywood, California.
While the aloha shirt no longer occupies the same place it once did in the nation’s fashion landscape, it did leave behind one lasting, if little-known legacy. In 1966, the Hawaiian Fashion Guild, a manufacturing association representing a number of producers of aloha shirts, successfully lobbied Hawaii’s business community to adopt ‘Aloha Friday’ in their workplaces. As the practice spread to Southern California, and from there to the rest of the nation, it was modified to the better-known ‘Casual Friday’ workplace dress code.
The aloha shirt aficionados shown in the photo above were members of the National Association of Manufacturers, and were attending a February, 1961 board meeting in Palm Springs, California. The photograph is part of the Hagley Library’s National Association of Manufacturers photographs and audiovisual materials collection (Accession 1973.418).
