Prime Social Group announces its complete 2019 festival calendar revealing the dates for its eleven upcoming festivals across the year. The lineups are stacked for these massive festivals; #FEST, PRIME Music Festival, Breakaway Music Festival, Haunted Fest, and Timeless.

For the third year, the Breakaway Music Festival, brainchild of Lynn and Zach Ruben of Prime Social, popped up in Columbus at the Ohio Expo Center. The two-day festival was a mix of EDM and hip-hop and, in a cool way, had no real headliner. Don’t be mistaken, there were headlining acts, but, in an egalitarian lineup, they were mixed in throughout the day instead of everything leading up to them. The party featured Lil Uzi Vert, Rae Sremmurd, Chance the Rapper, Waka Flocka, Young Thug and Ty Dolla Sign. For the EDM heads, Benny Benassi, RL Grime, Gryffin and Prince Fox provided plenty of reason to sweat.

Sweat. yeah, it was hot as balls Friday. I rolled in after my corporate-grind, mind-killing day job and I was ready to get a little wild. When I got there, Cheat Codes was playing.

These dudes are like a soulful dance crew. After Cheat Codes, EDM DJ Prince Fox took to the wheels. Already, the crowd was packing in with a full force crush against the gates, jumping to the beat in a symbiotic celebration of bass drops and psychedelic sounds. As I gazed out over the crowd, growing larger by the minute, bodies flowing in like a burst dam over a village, each one of them with eyes filled with youthful anticipation, skipping into the tumultuous ocean of humanity, I was filled with the sense that this was going to be one crazy party. The air smelled like hope and pixie stix. We were all part of something completely different and we would all be affected. And we will all have a hell of a story.

Lil Uzi Vert was up next.

I had seen Lil Uzi here and there on youtube and whatnot and I was never really that impressed. But, as he laid out his first verses, I knew that this was not going to be what I had seen. Live, Uzi is a stick of dynamite. With his confident swagger and endless amount of energy, he poured everything out on the stage. I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a convert, but I like him better than before he performed.

Let me take a minute here to talk about my favorite part of rap or hip-hop at festivals. See, festivals are a little different than the club because there’s usually more of a mixed crowd. In other words, there’s a lot of white kids. It’s always interesting to me when I look around and I see that moment of decision when a white kid decides to sing along with ALL of the lyrics. You know what I mean, right? It just cracks me up.

Anyway, Rae Sremmurd broke me out of this deep revelry.

Again, not a favorite because I like lyrics and shit, but these guys were fun live. The stage became a No Flex Zone, for which i was thankful because there had been way too much flexing on that stage so far. The crowd loved them.

Speaking of the crowd, it was now reaching epic proportions. I took a break to walk around because I was, honestly, EDMed out. I could take no more so I rolled around to see what I could see. I couldn’t believe how many people were there. What was once a good-sized turn out turned into the population of a small city. And it wasn’t like they were spread all over the venue. They were all trying to pack into the stage area, pressing forward, like grapes being shoved into the press.

This was about the time that people started to drop out. And I don’t mean that in a figurative sense. From this point on, people were dropping like flies. Security, the true champs of the whole festival, was pulling people out non-stop. They were passing out water and spraying people down and, still, people dropped. Some of them were drunk, yes, rookies, but a lot of them were simply saved from being crushed in the onslaught of people trying as hard as they might, to press closer to the stage. The medical staff was busy rolling people off for care, all while people were still being pulled from the crowd. Except for one grown ass dude I saw being carried out like a baby, all of the people I saw being pulled out were very young and had no idea being stuck in the middle of hot, sweaty individuals was not the best decision. But, again, they had a hell of a story when they get back to school.

I made my way back to the stage to catch Chance the Rapper.

I’ve liked Chance since I heard him with Action Bronson on Baby Blue and he put on a crazy show.

By that time, it was Waka Flocka time. Waka was playing the indoor stage, following Corrupt. Once Chance was done, the crowd flocked (or would that be Flockad?) into the Lausche building to catch some Waka.

Mr. Flocka did not disappoint. He turned out, he wore me out, he murdered everyone in the crowd and we all left with a smile.

That was it for my Friday night. Back at it again tomorrow.

Ah, Saturday, the first real day of the weekend. I rolled into he festival around 3:30, just in time to catch Desiigner.

Yay. Lucky me. For real, I have no idea what the fuck this guy is about. I know he’s got broads in Atlanta and he likes to rhyme words with panda. And it was repeated over and over again. I didn’t even know he had more than one song. I WILL give it to him, though, dude is an animal live. Unafraid to throw himself on the fans, crowdsurfing further back than his security, I’m sure, was comfortable with, he was the champion of working the crowd.

Suddenly, drama hit. We were waiting on Young Thug and I looked back over the crowd. Looking further back, I saw the impending doom. A blanket of dark clouds was being pulled up in the distance. The clouds rolled in closer and closer, threatening to change our blue skies to grey. Next thing we knew, they were announcing that everybody had to go into the Launch building because there was lightening near. Seeing as how we were all surrounded by metal in a wide open area, yeah, it was time to move. As the sky opened up outside, EDM DJ Jaxx was making his own rain inside. The air conditioning was nice but I was still in EDM fatigue from yesterday.

Soon, the rain stopped and everybody rushed to the stage at the smallest suggestion that it would open back up. I don’t use the word “rushed” lightly. There was a mad dash to the stage to try to get in front. Sike! Young Thug would perform inside. Again, the mad rush to get back inside.

Young Thug was as I expected. Fresh off dropping his newest release, “No, My Name is Jeffrey,” Mr. Thug had us bumping. It’s got to be pretty heady for an artist with the creative chops as Young Thug to look out over a crowd and see people already singing along with songs that just dropped a few days ago.

I had to check out Ty Dolla Sign, he of the airplane finding strip forehead, so I bounced out of the Young Thug show to check out Mr. $. It was cool because I forgot how many of his songs I liked. As expected, Ty Dolla Sign had the crowd in the palms of his hands.

Let me just say this about Ty Dolla. Dude makes some of the most visually appealing, highly cinematic and conceptual videos for songs that are all about fucking. I love that shit.

So, Breakaway festival kicked my ass. The rain was a bit of a bummer because it seemed to throw somewhat of a damper on the party. Everybody had fun, though, I’m sure. Everybody survived. And everybody had a hell of a story to tell.
