It’s ALREADY hard as fuck to GET birth control in a lot of places (I’m a South Texan, but my metroplex has two actual abortion clinics and at least one Planned Parenthood location that while they don’t do abortions they do offer other reproductive services including birth control.)
If you’re in the Rio Grande Valley (parts are literally farther south than parts of Mexico, the only clinic left is in McAllen and I would rec the PBS POV “On the Divide” about it), things are even worse because while my metroplex skews Latine and to an extent working poor depending on neighborhood, the Valley is both generally poorer and the chances that anybody needing an abortion/birth control/post-miscarriage care/other reproductive treatment is some variety of Latine are way higher.
Black women in the South have been prepping for this for a long-ass time (and I would assume that anybody who’s black and can get pregnant but isn’t a lady has been too), because there’s “trigger laws” all over the place set to go into effect if Roe v. Wade falls but a bunch are in the South, and iirc both Alabama and Mississippi are down to one clinic.
So yeah, folks, raising kids is fucking expensive no matter how much you love them, and you know the kind of Republicans who vote to shoot down birth control as a free (or at least low/sliding-scale co-pay deal) and accessing safe affordable abortions regardless of why you want one just want to control your bodies and generally don’t give a fuck about your kiddos once they’re actually born unless they either count as “healthy white infants” for adoption or as “y’all won’t stop having babies that you expect the state to help you with” fodder if you’re BIPoC and not a 1%er.
If they actually did give a fuck, they’d be voting for shit like more affordable housing, Medicaid/insurance expansion, more affordable/accessible/culturally appropriate services particularly if you and/or your kiddo happen to have disabilities but also “routine primary care”, helping out parents with abusive partners actually get out of that situation with their kids regardless of resources or documentation status, and not putting kids into foster care when the major problem may be “neglect” on paper but the reality is way closer to “you’re probably not white and you’re definitely poor”. And yes, they would definitely be voting for free/easily accessible birth control, because while it’s not a cure-all for unwanted/unplanned pregnancy, it does make it a lot less likely.
(Indigenous-specific, there’s areas where he foster care system actually has more kiddos in it than back in the residential school/basically concentration camp era, and if anyone ever wants to tell you about “Minnesota Nice” feel free to laugh in their face. I haven’t googled it lately, but at least one PBS deal I watched recently had “Minnesota Indigenous kiddos are 22 times more likely to be in foster care than white ones”. Neither Dakota state was great, but they were more like maybe 4-5 times as likely.)

The UHCOP Rio Grande Valley (RVG) satellite program will serve as a major teaching site for the college’s Professional Pharmacy Hispanic Healthcare Certificate Program— the first program of its kind in the nation. The certificate program is designed to help close disparity gaps in health care in the Rio Grande Valley by being responsive to the unique health beliefs, practices and cultural and linguistic needs of the region. The Rio Grande Valley has long experienced a shortage of health professionals, with particular difficulty in recruiting and retaining primary care and specialist physicians, nurses, physician assistants and clinical pharmacists. Poverty, remoteness, lack of an academic health educational center, and cultural and language barriers all contribute to the difficulty in recruiting and retaining health care professionals to the region. “DHR’s new partnership with the University of Houston College of Pharmacy demonstrates our shared commitment to providing health care professionals in the region. Austin's pediatric in-patient needs are currently served by Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas, a well-regarded but smaller hospital owned by the Seton Healthcare Family and affiliated with the University of Texas-Austin's new medical school. "Having just been notified about the plans, we look forward to gaining a better understanding of them," chief of external and academic affairs Greg Hartman said in a statement. Seton and Dell continually seek to improve health care in our community, and we hope Texas Children's will also commit to better care for our youngest patients and their families - care that's based here in Austin, and stays here in Austin. Vivian Ho, a health economics expert at Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy, said the key question over time will be how many such patients will be admitted to Dell and how many will be taken to Texas Children's main campus in Houston. Previous Texas Children's ventures around the state include a cancer and hematology clinic in McAllen that opened in 2001; a partnership with Scott & White Healthcare in Temple that was signed in 2011; and a collaboration with Children's Hospital of San Antonio that began providing it doctors in 2013.
