Greg turned to Pearl getting caught up looking for his favorite frozen pizza meal, heard the gem try to get his attention. "Pearl! Did you find anything you might wanna get? He looked and listened intently as she seemed to really wanna tell him something important. He looked back, and despite it feeling a bit like Pearl nagging. Greg wasn't going to argue. She had a point.

"Whoops." He scratched the side of his pants in a nervous tic before sighing. "Yeah, you're right. Not to mention it's probably not the best choice for my wallet right now." He put back a bunch of the frozen foods he had already. "I guess I got so lost in the thought of getting some..comfort food I forgot why we got here, I know it's not the best excuse." He sort of felt embarrassed now.

"Come on, what's on that list? We got a hungry lil Stevie at home!" He gave her a smile trying to sort of bounce back and really work with her.

out of all the humanly things on earth that grossed pearl out , food would be in the top 5. ( trust , she has a list. ) sure , her physical form was capable of eating , but the entire process was still disgusting.

therefore , this place , this ' grocery store ' is pearl's worst nightmare. every single corner is stocked with putrid , artificial , packaged human food [ . . . ] if she wasn't determined to learn to take of steven for rose , she would have left this store a long time ago.

" euggh .. " as she trailed behind greg , they passed the frozen meat section , and a shudder ran up her spine at the sight. for sanctum , she looked back at her shopping list that garnet provided her. ( remind her why couldn't garnet have come instead ? ) then she looked at the cart greg was pushing . .

nothing on the list was in the cart.

" um .. greg .. " concern in her voice , pearl caught up , pointing to her list. " you know , steven is a growing boy. human children need nutrients , not , um .. this. " slop is what she wanted to call it. the cart was filled with junk food and sugars and quite literally everything the book she read told her to not feed to steven. " we need to get real food. okay ? "

The  boy  watches  Preston  turn  back  to  his  phone  .  Eyes  narrow  ever  so  slightly  .  Everyone  always  used  something  as  an  excuse  to  reject  kindness  .  Orel  had  been  through  more  than  it  seemed  though  he  couldn't  be  mad  at  a  stranger  for  not  knowing  that  .  Likewise  ,  he  didn't  believe  it  to  be  something  that  he  should  dwell  on  for  ever  either  .  Things  had  to  get  better  ...  somehow  .

startled by the once unnoticed presence , preston jumps slightly and peers down at the young boy. contempt pierced through his gaze. kindness wasn't something preston was keen to handing out — nor was he familiar with it. was it dirty or even wrong , per se ? well . . it was certainly the wrong answer in all circumstances. growing up , it didn't take preston long to realize that kindness was always just a pleasantry , two - faced and riddled with ulterior motives.

" it's stupid , " preston aptly corrected , turning his attention back to his phone screen. it's sad that this child's parents haven't taught him the ugly truth to life [ . . . ] he must have to learn the same way preston did when he was about this kid's age. " kind people are liars. and when you get older , you'll see how kindness doesn't exist in the real world. "
