📍Spring Around The Greece 🇬🇷 Springtime is here!
Now you know what to see and do in this beautiful, blessed land. Save this reel as you’ll probably need it.
In summary:
March:
- Veria and the peach blossom, not to be missed. Base at the city of Veria and tour around. Literally everywhere you go, there will be oceans of peach blossomed trees around.
- Athens. Our city becomes especially pretty in the beginning of spring, as the bitter orange trees blossom and give out their amazing scent. Everyone is out and about. The sunsets on the hills are ridiculously pretty.
April:
- Acheron river. This is quite an unpopular opinion, as most choose to visit Acheron in the midst of the summer. Lots of hikes to do around the river right when springtime arrives, eat fresh fish by the river, see the ancient necromancy, Souli, Preveza. If you don’t mind the cold, take a dip in the river!
- Arta: in my opinion, one of the prettiest cities out there. Small enough to be nice and tidy, with its historical Arta stone bridge arching over river Arachthos, plenty of orange trees in and around the city, Koronisia and the Ambracian Gulf very near.
- Parga. One of the many jewels of the coast of Epirus. A castle on top of the old town, a wonderful promenade, sunsets, fresh fish, plenty of accommodation options, beaches. What’s not to like?
- Pelion. The mountain of the Centaurs is insanely green and pretty in April. The vegetation is so thick in some areas that the trees shadow the roads even in broad daylight.
Waterfalls everywhere around, quiet picturesque villages peeking behind the forests, endless views to the sea wherever you go.
May:
- Hydra. This island is nice and quiet in May, before the crowds. It’s warm enough to take a dip and walk around in shorts and t-shirt, exploring the labyrinth-like town of Hydra. A great escapade from Athens. - Zagori. Much like Pelion, the nature in Zagori completely transforms, with flourishing vegetation everywhere, rich wildlife out and about, the rivers full of rushing waters from the melting snows of the mountains. A true wonder of nature.

Shipwreck

Ship wrecked in the shallows of Drosia beach in Preveza -Epirus, Greece.
•Kodak ColorPlus 200 ISO Film, October 2024, AGFAFoto Analogue Reusable Camera.
Some extra info (long rant about the shipwreck's backstory):
I'm from the area and I remember this happening in 2019-2020. The wreck is in a rather bad condition despite only being there for about 5 years. I don't know much about ships but it looks to me like a small fishing or tender vessel. The story of how this went about is that one day my family and neighbours just woke up to this. This shipwreck showed up out of nowhere one winter day after a thunderstorm. No distress call, no crew or cargo in sight, no current registration documentation. They couldn't figure out who owned it or who was on it during last night. The police searched and found nothing of note. It was too expensive for the Town government to toll it so it stayed there rotting away barely out of sight from the main beach where people go for a swim. My dad's guess is that they had engine trouble in the opens and they were either carrying refugees or illegal cargo so they didn't contact the coastguard or rescue services. They drifted to Drosia beach in the dead of night with noone in the tiny Drosia settlement noticing and got out and on the run with all of the cargo before anyone came looking for them. The police didn't have the resources to investigate further. Small ships that carry illegal goods are not uncommon in our waters and So many refugee boats sunk in Greek waters every year. Just last year around 600 were lost just on a single shipwreck in the waters near Pylos. It's a tragedy that's been going on for a long time and we Greeks have the front row seats to see it. Noone seems to have died in this one at least. No bodies were discovered in the wreck or general area, or else I'll surely remember it and no signs of anything suggesting that. The thing was completely empty, whoever was on it left nothing behind. Anyways, I wanted to take a picture of it. With wrecks like that it may be possible for it to refloat on its own and drift into open waters again in a storm before sinking to the bottom. It's not completely wedged into the rocks and the hull doesn't seem to be in a too bad of a condition structurally. If the tide raises enough or if there are really rough seas you can see it shift ever so slightly. Maybe one of these days it gets unstuck from these rocks and it together with its very obscure history will be lost.
Photos I took of the wreck with my phone:

The Red Beard of the Pasha
When Ali Pasha ruled Ioannina, St. Kosmas of Aitolia prophesied to him about all the territories he would conquer.
Ali Pasha was told by the saint, “You will become a great man, you will conquer all of Albania, you will subjugate Preveza, Parga, Souli, Delvino, Gardiki, and the very stronghold of Kurt Pasha. You will leave a great name in the world. Also, you will go to Constantinople... but with a red beard. This is the will of Divine Providence.”
Saint Kosmas was martyred in August 24, 1779 after he was accused of being a Russian agent against the Ottomans. Indeed, Ali Pasha went on to become the sole ruler of Epiros, subjugating all of Albania and parts of Greece.
In January 1822, Ali Pasha was beheaded by his adversaries and his head was paraded on a silver platter throughout the streets of Ioannina, before it was sent to Constantinople. Thus came the fulfillment of Saint Kosmas’s prophecy that Ali Pasha of Ioannina would enter Constantinople with a beard made crimson by his own blood.

Kokkinopilos hills, Preveza, Hellas photo by @dimitris_patsis
The appearance of the Kokkinopilos hills (lit. "red clay" hills) is an unusual geological and natural phenomenon. The rains turned this low terra rossa (iron oxides with clay) plateau into an alternating landscape of hills and small ravines.
Tumblr media
It's a red spot amidst the greenery and the light brown soil of the area. Important findings from the Paleolithic and Bronze Age were found near Kokkinopilos.
