Oh goodness I love Welcome to Night Vale. Here's a short thing connected to episode 29, Subway, of which I shall now put some excerpts along with some from other episodes, because anyone who is reading this will most likely need them since they'll be much farther than 29, unlike me, who is only on 31, sigh, I shall get there one day. Anyway, this just popped into my head while I was listening, and ohmygods I love those two adorable dorks, like yikes. 29-- "Carlos – caring and reliable Carlos the scientist – thinks maybe the riders’ DNA has been washed out. Emptied. Completely drained of its contents. Listeners, I’m also being told that some people are not getting off the trains at all."  "...since Intern Dylan never returned from his errands (likely because I told him to take the new subway to save time), I myself must go investigate." "But I understood it fully, and it took years, Night Vale. Years...How much time has passed for you? Only four minutes??" 31-- "Carlos says he would like to study it, but that he promised to make a certain person dinner, and he has to learn how to put other things besides science first. Some of this realization might have come with help from those around him." Carlos jumps up as he hears Cecil's voice on the radio declaring he's about to check out the subway system. No! Cecil can't do that! Does he have no common sense, or at least some sense of self-preservation?! If Carlos's theory is correct, he won't come back the same. Even if no one's sure exactly what the subway does, Cecil is still going to get hurt, or changed, or disappear forever-- Panic is prominent in Carlos's mind and the radio is left behind on the kitchen counter as he slides into his car, intent on getting to the station. It's only when he's been driving for a few minutes that he thinks to turn on the car radio. Now it's--the weather?! Come on. Time is in the form of tense seconds that come and go seemingly quite slowly, until Cecil's voice comes back in through the car speakers and Carlos's whole body relaxes in relief, his boyfr-- Cecil is okay, only to get another shock as the words "And it took years, Night Vale. Years" are spoken in an infuriatingly calm tone. A few minutes later Carlos has entered the station and is standing outside the door, though he realizes in that moment, dragging a hand frustratedly down his face, that it would probably be best to wait until the program is over. So there he is, leaning against the wall and still quite on edge, when Cecil steps out after the trademark "Good night, Night Vale, good night." Cecil lets out a gasp of delight at seeing Carlos's face, who can't help but give a faint smile in return, godammit Cecil you're adorable. "What are you doing here? Is everything all right?" checks Cecil. "Yes-- I mean-- well, no-- don't you think investigating the subway system on your own was a bit risky?" He gets a look of surprise. "I mean, someone had to do it. Besides, it was fun! I learned secrets of the universe...read the newspaper...I don't usually do that. It was nice." "Years, Cecil? That doesn't sound fun. You should have at least done some preparation beforehand, maybe tried to figure out exactly what you were getting into? That was dangerous. Safety should always come first." Carlos knows he is talking too much, but he's got to get this through. "When we were doing those tests on the trees in the park, we didn't even wear saftey goggles," points out Cecil, looking at him with some concern. "And that was even real science and everything." "I hate to say it, but I was doing most of those tests...which is understandable, since I'm the scientist, but still. The point is, that was me. You're different. You're different than most people, in fact." "I'm glad you think so," says Cecil, and his whole face is now lit up with a big smile. Carlos can only nod. "Er, where was I. That..that means you matter more than most people. To me," he adds, silently cursing himself because he's making a mess out of this whole thing, which scientists, such as him, aren't supposed to do. What he really wants to say is that Cecil is made of carefree fragile, which has confusing grammar, and seems like an oxymoron, and really it is, but that's not even the point. And he wants to say that Cecil is like a (gorgeous)flower, one so determined to grow towards the sun, and mostly that's a good thing, a beautifully remarkable thing, but sometimes it scares Carlos, and he needs Cecil to let him provide reasoning to balance with that determination. But that's quite a lot to say, and Cecil's eyes already seem like they can see right into his thoughts as usual, and they're hugging each other now and it feels so right. Carlos doesn't understand how everything can seem so factually incorrect and yet so right whenever he's with Cecil. He doesn't understand. And yet he's (sort of?)okay with it, which he really shouldn't be because scientists, such as him, should be trying to find out answers, but whenever he's with Cecil his mind gets all jumbled and he starts to think the answer to everything is Cecil. Who's obviously still pretty confused. So anyways, somehow they're now heading towards the car and Carlos is listening to how Cecil is confused, but how the key to a good relationship is first and most importantly made of silver, "which admittedly makes it hard if you're in a relationship with a werewolf," Cecil is explaining, "but the thing about silver is that it unlocks communication. A lot of people just skip right past that part and call communication the key itself, which obviously the only value that can physically manifest as a key is Laziness, but basically, maybe we need to talk some things over." He gets in the passenger seat and is now talking about good home dinner recipes before Carlos realizes what is happening. "I have research to compile," he says, "I need to get several expirements sorted out before tomorrow--" but Cecil cuts across him, saying, "Maybe you should put other things before science for once. You can start by cooking us dinner." And they ride home with that adorable dork now musing about Dana's latest message, how cute the cat that lives in the station is, how cute Carlos is(Carlos stares straight ahead pretending he doesn't hear but feeling butterflies positively swarm in his chest at this one), and various other topics of perceived interest. And they get to Carlos's house and an eyebrow is raised at the radio that's still on on the kitchen counter(now playing the sounds of a swarm of flies circling a hot mic), but, you know, everything's going to be okay. Even though and especially because, Cecil has somehow now gotten Carlos to promise he'll cook them both dinner again soon. Carlos can get used to this. Or maybe he'll never be fully used to any of this, and he's (surprisingly)okay with that idea too.

Let’s see if the tuesjade tag accepts my offering this week. I’ve truly hit the apex of barely mentioning the prompt and then doing something else entirely. Tbh this only exists for the betas arguing over soft drink nomenclature. Otherwise I would’ve scrapped it bc it’s kind of boring.

Tuesjade prompt: old-fashioned

 You grew up talking with the gods of universe B2, but you grew up reading about the ones from B1 in the tattered volume left in your meteoric prison. When you look at them, you can almost see the loops and curls of Rose's handwriting superimposed over their faces. "Forgive me the quaint device of introducing the cast of characters," she'd written, "but if anyone finds this account in the future, they might as well know in whose incapable hands the fate of reality was entrusted, if only they can curse the gods by name." You’d thought it was funny, then. Now, as you watch the gods of the new world argue over whether to put chunky or creamy peanut butter on the shopping list, you think she had a point.

"We only have the illusion of freedom," Rose reminds them. "Jane's father will be double checking whatever we decide on anyway, so we don't splurge on personal twelve-packs of Mountain Dew."

"Now we have to do that," Dave says. "Alchimeters never got the carbonation right."

John elbows his sister. "You've been missing out on drinks that can go up your nose."

"Like sasparilla?" she asks.

He frowns. "Saspa-what?"

"It's an old-fashioned word for a kind of soda," Rose tells him.

"You mean pop," John says.

Dave holds up an admonishing finger. "I'm afraid it's coke.”

Rose shakes her head. "That's a brand."

His alternate self interjects. "Coke transcends brands. That's two to one, you're outnumbered."

"That's not fair," John says. "It's like you're voting twice."

Jade groans. "I'm sorry I said anything about your silly sugar water."

The beverage taxonomy issue is tabled, and they settle on creamy peanut butter. Rose leaves to deliver the list to Jane’s father, and the boys depart bickering over voting rights. Jade stays seated, rolling the pen they were using away and calling it back with flicks of her index finger. Beyond the glare of the Green Sun, her power is muted, but she’s working on finer control.

You can see Rose sitting in the paneled halls of your meteor, pen to paper. Jade Harley, our session’s Witch of Space. The only one of us with any common sense. I should have more to write about her than I do, but she kept a lot to herself. Does she not trust us?

Maybe I should have asked better questions.

Rose described her friends for you in anecdotes and psychological sketches. She’d tried to stay clinical for imagined posterity, providing bulleted lists of their strengths and weaknesses and making predictions for what her absent friends would be like in three years. At times, though, especially later in her journal, sentiment had crept in. She’d share an anecdote, comment on some trivial detail and then apologize for it. That’s how you came to know them. In truth, text is how you came to know everyone, when all your interactions were through messages you sent to each other, what you chose to share or keep to yourselves. You love words, but they can only do so much. They condense people to characters, and when they do, it’s so easy for those characters to go off script.

“I use the wrong words too,” you say.

Jade looks up. The pen skitters off the table, unheeded. “What?”

“I didn’t have anyone to tell me how to speak. I learned from things that were left behind.” The laptop your troll semi-guardian left behind for you contained old chats with strange slang – words like hive and respite block. You’d hoped a foreign affect would hide the idiosyncrasies, but your anachronisms were from a lot further than across the pond.

“I noticed when I met you,” Jade says. “You didn’t lift your questions at the end. I used to do that.”

Questions rise in pitch, you’ve found. A flat tone means it’s a statement in disguise. Words gain so much based on how they’re spoken. They don’t have that life on the page, only a semblance given by italics, underlines, emoticons. You have a lot to learn.

"I mispronounced things too,” Jade continues. “I thought purpose rhymed with propose, it sounded stronger that way. And Dave said he'd pay me to ask Rose about "peskyology" when we all met up."

"Pesky...” You hesitate. “Oh, psychology?"

"That's right." She laughs. “It fits, doesn’t it? Especially since she uses it to mess with people’s heads.”

“I suppose it does.”

“The dictionary had a pronunciation guide, but the IPA is confusing. It was bad enough that I didn’t know which words I should use… people laughed when I used the bigger ones, so I tried to stop.” She sticks out her tongue. “I don’t dumb myself down anymore, but then my vocabulary isn’t as surprising at sixteen as it was as a kid.”

You nod. "It’s hard to know what to say sometimes. Dirk and Roxy did something similar before they revealed they were from the future.” You remember the way you all danced around each other – you concealing your true species, Dirk and Roxy trying to talk like they hailed from 2011, Jake with his bravado and Jane not wanting to admit she was an heiress. “It's like we were all putting on our own acts."

Jade retrieves the pen from the floor with a ‘come here’ gesture and clicks it closed. "I know what that's like."

“It’s hard growing up alone, isn’t it?”

She touches an ear with a self-conscious laugh. “It’s a miracle I didn’t grow up totally feral.”

Feral. When you’d been truly alone, is that what you were? No, your other self was stone-smooth and just as hard, more like a goddess than a child in the garb of one. You know which version you prefer. “I’ve seen what I would have become. I’m glad I had what I did.”

Jade shakes her head. “I can’t even imagine how bad I might have gotten without people to talk to. When we made it through our first session and I wasn’t living alone anymore, that was the best day of my life. I wouldn’t trade it for anything, even with all the problems and arguments that came after.”

An argument would be a good collective noun for the group of you. But you wouldn’t give it up either. From the moment John came for you after you’d risen, bewildered, in the wreckage of your session, you’d been dragged into a whirlwind of colours and mayhem, and you wouldn’t trade in a moment of it. You’re no longer watching a story of an octet of faraway gods, their consorts, and their compatriots. You’re living it.

Rose had compared them, tongue in cheek, to archetypes from a heroic narrative. The fearless leader. The reluctant hero. The sacrifice. “I guess I would be the bad one,” she wrote. “The one who doubted the fantasy paradise they’d stumbled into. It’s not inaccurate. I’m still not sure I was wrong.”

Jade had been labeled the wise one. That was the part you’d carved out for yourself too, the mysterious messenger bearing knowledge and keeping secrets. Rose had placed them into those rote roles to mock the practice, but it caught your fancy. Once upon a time, you painted people in broad strokes. But you’ve met a version of yourself who only saw the big picture. You’ve learned the value of detail. “I like the arguments too,” you say. “They’re charming.”

“Not the ones we used to have.” She shrugs. “Or maybe they would be, from an outside perspective. I mean, John yelling so hard he passed out was pretty objectively funny, if you weren’t caught up in the moment.”

You giggle. “I remember seeing that in the clouds. I drew it. He reminded me of my brother throwing a tantrum, although don’t tell him that. He might find the comparison is insulting, and well he should.”

“I won’t tell if I can see the picture.”

“Oh, it’s long gone.” Your brother destroyed a lot of your artwork, and what was left is lost somewhere in the wreckage of your planet or far future Earth. You miss it sometimes – so much work, gone. It’s probably a good thing your fanfiction didn’t survive, though. “Maybe I’ll redo it for our illustrated account of your adventures.”

She grins. “I’ll describe it in detail. You need to get his legs sticking up just right.”

“I’ll make sure we include it in the authoritative summary of our epic.”

“It won’t be worth it otherwise.”

And she’s joking, but she’s right. Detail is where the people are. In their foibles, their silly spats, their embarrassing moments. If you wrote about Jade, you’d include the way her forehead creases when she concentrates, her favorite kind of peanut butter, the way she mispronounced purpose for the first thirteen years of her life. That’s important.

Who knows what stock character Rose would assign you, but in your own mind you have always been the storyteller. That can lead you down dangerous paths when you make the world your journal, but it doesn’t have to. The universe is made of DNA and song. Both boil down to letters. Those are constructs, symbols used to make sense of sequences of acid or sound waves, but everything is. You are all stories telling themselves. And while you might not welcome an editor with a red pen coming to slash through the parts they find unseemly, sometimes a beta reader can help make it even better.

“We’ll work on it together,” you say. “I wouldn’t want to do it all myself.”

Hey :) I was wondering if you could help me find a certain torture method that could work in my story. My character is a scientist who has to do research and experiment on mermaids. But he particularly hates them. Is there a torture method that could look like professional experimenting from the outside, but actually is very harmful/painful and without a real scientist end results.

The firstthing that came to my mind wouldactually have some scientific use and may or may not be survivable:vivisection.

 This isessentially the dissection of something that is still alive withoutanaesthetic.

 DuringWorld War 2 the Japanese rather infamously did this to prisoners. I mention itbecause it might work in your setting butit would be something scientists havedone which does have some scientific value.

 The mainthing is to make sure he doesn’t followscientific methods. Because that’s what science is really, a method. So have him do ‘experiments’ with no controlgroup, have him not write proper records, have him not analyse ‘samples’ butkeep taking them.

 Practiceslike that would mean that even if he was doing things that could potentially give results he personallywouldn’t obtain any results.

 It’s alsoworth keeping in mind that modern Western institutions have pretty strict animal welfare guidelines.Vivisection of anything with a spine is completely illegal in the UK(incidentally octopus are classed as having spines under UK animal rightslaws).

 Anything obviously abusive towards animals islikely to get a modern researcher in the West into serious trouble. Scientists have to apply to research on liveanimals and they have to make a case before an ethics committee that theirresearch is a) important and b) can’t be done any other way.

 It’s notsomething I’ve personally done but I’ve seen the process. It’s long andinvolved and designed to make sure that only people who will take at least cursory care of the animals are even considered.

 It’s alsoworth remembering that largerinstitutions usually employ separate people to take care of the animals. Andthese people have and do report violations.

 So thebest thing isn’t just something that doesn’t give results, but something that can be excused.

 If theyhave scales I’d suggest removal of scales. I’m pretty sure tearing scales off afish while it’s still alive would be pretty painful for the poor thing. I don’tknow how much information can be gained from them but I don’t think it’s muchcompared to other samples. He could potentially get DNA from them, but thereare easier, painless, ways DNAsamples could be obtained.

 The otherthing that comes to mind (and I am very glad I’ve read so much about octopusright now-) is messing with the environment of their tanks. Ocean dwellingcreatures are incredibly sensitive tosmall changes in the water. Reducing the water current will affect them.Reducing the dissolved oxygen, increasing or decreasing the salt. Slighttemperature changes can kill fish from shock. He could claim that he’s tryingto find the best conditions to keep them alive, or that he’s trying to see whatconditions they’d ‘tolerate’.

 Addingchemicals to their water could easily cause them a lot of pain (imagine being covered in toilet bleach-). If they havegills then they’d be effectively breathing it in. Even if they don’t chemicalscould affect their skin and eyes and possibly their digestive tract.Antiseptics, cleaning materials and fungicides would be a safe bet for this ashe could claim that there was a problem with infection that he’s trying toclear up.

 Somethingas obvious as cutting their fins he probably wouldn’t get away with in the West. Not in a systematic senseanyway. But he might be able to cut them a few times if he could explain theinjury as an accident and didn’t do it often.

 He mightalso try introducing other species to the tank. Something as obvious as a sharkprobably wouldn’t be a good idea. But an aggressive Giant Pacific Octopus cando a lot of damage, as can anelectric eel or anything aggressive andpoisonous.

 I thinkfor that one you’d need to decide what sort of marine environment your mermaidslive in, because that will affect what else could survive in their tank.

 My finalsuggestion would be to consider making this character the animal caretakerrather than a scientist. It’s possible for a scientist to do all this, but ifhe’s a scientist he’ll be risking a lot more career wise than if he’s not. Byno means essential, but you should at least consider that a scientist may berisking his career for pretty petty, trivial abuse. (Which would say a LOTabout his character and be a good point writing-wise.)

The next day I called my insurance company they was vary helpful and I believe the clam would be settled in my favor as I had CCTV of the crash as I had a camera inside of my car and a witness that was behind my car at the time of the crash. After nearly 4Months I have now revived a letter stating that the claim has been closed on a Without Prejudice Basis. When I contacted Aviva to see what the 3rd party has not accepted full liability they said it was dealt with like this as the 3rd party who crashed into me was not responding to and calls or letters that have send him. Aviva did not asked to see the CCTV of the crash and did not take into account the witness statement. WHAT CAN I DOOO??""
