Manual Brewing tips!
These tips should help you brew better coffee at home, whether it's via Chemex, V60, French press, clever and even automatic coffee drippers.
The ideal brewing temperature for coffee extraction is 195°-205°. It is best to start with water at a higher temp, and letting it drop before brewing. The water will immediately begin to cool once water leaves the dispenser and you begin brewing.
Like espresso, the coffee provides some resistance. To brew more coffee you need more grounds, but also a courser grind. Desired brew time will determine your grind. If the coffee brews too quickly, it is most likely to be under extracted. If it brews too slowly, the coffee will be over extracted.
Always use a scale to weigh coffee and water.
Always use a timer, especially since you're aiming for an ideal brew time.
Grind immediately before you’re ready to brew. It is important to use the coffee as soon as it is ground. Coffee begins to lose aroma and oils just a few minutes after grinding.
Burr grinders are superior to blade grinders. Burr grinders grind the coffee evenly so the ground particles are uniform in size, while blade only chop up the coffee beans.
Drip brew methods such as the Chemex, and V60 typically require a finer grind than immersion brewing like the French press and clever.
