The white-thighed surili (Presbytis siamensis) is an Old World Monkey, endemic to the Thai-Malay Peninsula. This species is in rapid decline, at a rate of a 30% population loss over 30 years. -- Today, I was lucky enough to see a family of 5 today hanging about in the trees. Seeing this primate was an incredible sight. They were not even 2 km from the nearest town; Tanah Rata. Tanah Rata is in the agricultural epicenter of Malaysia, The Cameron Highlands. This area is known for its excessive land clearing for agricultural purposes, with most of the clearing illegal. Constant landslides are a recurring problem in the steep, hilly region and the average temperature has risen by 2 degrees in the last decade. This forces lowland animals to move higher into the mountains, putting pressure on existing populations. -- With the human population in Malaysia growing at around 500,000 people a year, clearing of old-growth rainforest will continue.
