No More Excuses//Katelena
Chapter 4: The Angel of Death Made Me Bacon
Pairing: Kate Bishop x Yelena Belova
Chapter Summary: Yelena wakes Kate up with homemade breakfast and explains her intentions.
A/N: I could really go for some brunch rn except that it’s midnight
Chapter warnings: depression, medications
Kate peeled her eyes open to sunlight streaming directly on her face, and the archer let out a loud groan, rolling over and pulling a pillow over her head. What kind of psychopath opened her curtains?
"Kate Bishoooooop!" sang a voice from her kitchen, accent heavy and much too cheery for the morning. "I know you're awake, Kate Bishop! Come get your breakfast before I drag you out of bed myself! I am very capable of doing that!"
Kate jolted upright, head spinning as she took a moment to realize who was in her apartment. Right. Fucking Yelena. What time was it?
"What is it you Americans call it, once it's too late to actually have breakfast? Brunch?" Yelena called out, laughing a little to herself. "Very silly."
Kate grumbled unintelligibly under her breath and rubbed at her eyes furiously, desperate to wake herself up a bit more as she headed down to the kitchen. Lucky greeted her by the couch, tongue lolling happily as he gave a little bark before diving back into his bowl of mystery food.
"Did you get... premium dog food?" Kate mumbled out, eyeing her pup as he seemed to inhale the kibble. "I swear, he always refuses non-human stuff unless it's ridiculously expensive."
Yelena's laugh echoed around the kitchen again. "Secret recipe I give to my puppy, Fanny. My daddy says it's good for them."
Kate finally looked up to see the kitchen and stopped, the long legs of her pajama pants pooling around her feet as she came to a halt. Yelena had music playing from Kate's busted stereo, Taylor Swift's voice winding around the blonde as she swayed to the tune with a silver bowl of what looked like pancake batter in her arms. One of Kate's only cooking books was open on the counter, but looked rather untouched.
The assassin spotted Kate and gave her a dimpled grin, winking as she continued to stir the batter. "Good morning, Kate Bishop!" she sang, her voice melting into Taylor's. Kate could only stare, feeling dumbstruck and almost stupid. God, she was tired.
The sunlight slanted through her windows and laid over Yelena in soft lines, making her hair glow golden and her hazel eyes light up with fire. She continued to sing quietly and almost prance around the kitchen, completely unaware of the trance she had put the other girl in.
Kate jolted back when Lucky's cold nose pressed into her palm, and she ducked her head to pet him, face burning. Her mind went to weird places when she was sleep deprived.
Yelena set two plates down on the small table (again with two actual forks) and beckoned Kate to sit a couple minutes later, an easy smile on her lips. Kate had to force herself not to look at her. The plates were full of steaming eggs and bacon and fresh pancakes, and her mouth watered mercilessly.
Fuckin bacon...
Yelena somehow seemed to pull a bottle of hot sauce out of thin air, unceremoniously drenching her food in it with a happy sigh. "I missed hot sauce," she muttered almost dreamily, digging in once the bottle was nearly empty.
Kate blinked, unsurprised, and followed suit. (Sans hot sauce.)
Yelena once again finished before Kate, and she leaned back in her chair to watch the girl. "I cook good, yes?"
Kate just nodded enthusiastically, looking up from under her lashes with a mouth full of bacon. Yelena's breath caught, but she quickly laughed it away, the sound deep in her chest, eyes scrunched tight.
"Aw, Kate Bishop, you are so cute. Just like a puppy."
Kate immediately choked on the food in her mouth, coughing and sputtering as she scrambled to her sink in order to spit out the contents. She massaged at her throat while she struggled to get air down, lungs shrieking as her mind whirled. Cute??
She vaguely heard Yelena cackling from where she still sat at the table, and once Kate could breathe normally again, she turned to give the blonde a solid glare.
"Oh, Kate Bishop!" Yelena gasped, wiping tears from her eyes as she clutched her stomach. "Are you alright?"
Kate softened a bit at the sincerity in her eyes, heart thudding in her chest. "Warn a girl next time, won't you?" she grumbled, turning back to the sink to rinse it out. "My baconnnn," she whined sorrowfully, watching the meat and water go down the drain.
Yelena snickered yet again. "Don't worry, Kate Bishop. I can make you more bacon."
Kate turned her head over her shoulder, pouting at the Russian who smirked at her. They looked at each other for a moment, Yelena cocking an eyebrow at her, but a moment later Kate's face slid into a mask of cold confusion.
"Where did you stay last night?" she said suddenly, genuinely curious, if not a tad bit worried.
"The couch," Yelena replied simply, shrugging as if that was perfectly acceptable.
Kate squinted at her. "The couch... here? My couch?"
"Yes, Kate Bishop. Your couch." Yelena watched her carefully, sensing the archer's shift in mood. "I promised you I would explain in the morning, did I not?"
Kate nodded slowly, eyes darting between the sink and Yelena. She hesitantly made her way back to the table, sitting across from the assassin and hunching into her hoodie.
Yelena let out a thoughtful sigh and grabbed the two plates to set them down on the floor for Lucky, who dived for them eagerly, then leaned back in her seat.
"I was waiting for you to get back so you could fulfill your promise," she said, folding her arms over her chest, if only to keep herself from fiddling with her rings.
Kate opened and closed her mouth a couple of times. "What promise?" she asked slowly, feeling a little behind.
"Why, to get drinks, of course!" Yelena was suddenly cheery as she sat up taller, leaning against the table and towards Kate. "Don't tell me you forgot about that little comment, Kate Bishop?"
Kate squinted in thought and stared at the assassin across from her for a moment, desperately sifting through her memory of the last couple weeks until it clicked. "Ohhhhh!" she nodded, a little skeptic. "I don't- I don't really know if I was being serious."
"Well, I took it seriously, Kate." Yelena smirked and stood, grabbing the dog-licked dishes from the floor and going to put them in the sink.
Kate can feel her face burning, but she ignores it and clears her throat nervously. She didn't need to overthink this. Yelena was a friend, right? Could they call themselves that? They fought and didn't kill each other, and the blonde just made her breakfast after staying the night, for Pete's sake. They were on good terms, clearly. "You don't need to keep doing this, Yelena. I'll take you out to get a drink either way."
The woman stopped, her eyes still on the sink. "Doing what, Kate Bishop?"
"Making meals. Cleaning up. You don't need to do that. I can- I can do it myself." Even as Kate says it, she wishes she hadn't. Of course Yelena's behavior is strange, and her bullshit excuse for being here was half assed (but still really cute), but Kate does appreciate what she's doing. Almost like she knew Kate wouldn't actually make the effort if it was only her.
"I was here in your apartment before you got home, Kate Bishop," Yelena admits, busying herself with rinsing what's in the sink, Lucky sitting at her feet. "You said we would get drinks, so I came to collect. But I was bored, and you were gone much longer than I thought you would be, so I organized some things. Your kitchen appliances, your bathroom, your med box..." She stole a glance over her shoulder. "You need to take those, by the way."
Kate doesn't respond immediately. Instead, she just watches Yelena, watches her do something so mundane and domestic as rinsing the dishes, watches how her dog looks up at the blonde like she's a goddess on Earth, watches the way she seems to sway her hips even when there's no music playing. She hadn't even noticed when Taylor Swift went quiet.
"I guess I should probably be mad that you broke into my house when I was out of town and went through all of my things," she states, mulling over the thoughts speeding through her head.
It's Yelena's turn to be quiet for a moment, but her retort is familiar. "Again with the breaking, Kate Bishop. Nothing is broken."
It's silent, and Kate decides it's too much. She digs out her phone and connects her Bluetooth to the speaker, disconnecting Yelena's in the process. Her playlist of Cavetown and Hosier comes on, and she lets herself relax a little.
Yelena stays strangely mute, not even humming, though she did seem to know the tune as she tapped her foot along. Kate just stares at her for what feels like the millionth time.
"Are you?" Yelena suddenly mutters, trying to sound unbothered.
Kate responds maybe a little too quickly. "Am I what?"
"Are you mad? That I showed up and went through your belongings?"
The archer chews at her lip for a moment. "No."
Yelena just nods, drying her hands off with a towel and moving on. "Back to you saying I didn't need to make you food. Would you have eaten anyway? Would you have taken your medication?" Her gaze is locked onto Kate, the intensity almost burning.
Kate doesn't have an answer. She knows she wouldn't have remembered.
Yelena only shrugs and pulls Kate's medicine box out of thin air, plopping it in front of her. "Take those. I have errands to run, and I will not be back until tomorrow evening. I know you know how to take care of yourself, Kate Bishop. Prove it."
Lucky whines and follows after Yelena as she stalks to the big windows, pushing one open and winking at Kate before falling out of it rather dramatically. The loss is an immediate punch into Kate's heart, who feels a little startled at the abrupt departure.
She and Lucky look at each other, probably thinking the same thing.
"What the fuck?"

Darling: premium dog food, a hair brush.
Zip: watermelon, squeaky burger.
Kerem: simple kibble, a small fluffy bunny. (She’s comforted by the softness, and she sometimes acts like it’s a puppy : ( )

A lot of the "premium" dog and cat food brands like to shit talk the mass market store brands, but in reality the mass market store brands have been rigorously tested and are created under the safest conditions for long term storage and transport of pet kibble.
They also claim that veterinarians don't get any nutrition training, which just isn't true. Vet schools teach two full semesters of nutrition, with additional electives for people who want to go into that as a specialization, and the people making the cat and dog food get PhDs in the subject.
In reality, if you want to feed your pet a real meat based diet, the only safe way to do so is to cook and prepare the meat yourself. (It's not hard! It's just expensive. But less expensive than a vet bill.) And yes it has to be COOKED. Raw meat can still give your pet diseases, especially raw fish, chicken, or pork.
But there's nothing wrong with a regular ol' store brand of cat or dog food, as long as your pet doesn't have a food allergy to one of the ingredients. I feed my cat Purina One kibble with the tiny chunks of chicken or salmon jerky mixed in, so they get the benefit of properly prepared biscuit food. And of course, canned food is already cooked and has been rigorously tested and undergone pasteurization to prevent mold and bacteria, just like our human canned foods.
You can also add a little bit of water or low sodium chicken broth to the hard kibble to soften it, for animals with bad teeth. My cat goes crazy for this - I call it "making it gourmet."
PLEASE BE CAREFUL FOR ANYONE WHO USES “BLUEBUFFALO” FOR THEIR DOGS!!

What food do dogs enjoy the most?
Dogs bring joy to our lives with their loyalty, playfulness, and unconditional love, and feeding them is one of the ways we show our care. But just like humans, dogs have their favorites when it comes to food. Knowing what foods dogs enjoy the most, while keeping their health in mind, is crucial for happy and healthy pets. Let’s explore some of the most loved food choices for dogs and tips to make their meals both enjoyable and nutritious.
High-Quality Meat-Based Proteins Dogs are naturally drawn to meat, as they are descendants of carnivorous wolves. Proteins from high-quality sources, such as chicken, beef, turkey, lamb, and fish, are not only delicious to them but also essential for their muscle growth and overall well-being. Many dogs love the taste of cooked or raw meat (if you’re following a raw food diet under veterinary guidance).
Pro Tip: Avoid seasoning or adding harmful ingredients like onions or garlic when preparing meat for your dog.
Cheese and Dairy Products Most dogs find cheese irresistible. It’s an excellent source of protein and calcium, making it a great occasional treat. Popular options include cheddar, mozzarella, or cottage cheese. However, keep in mind that some dogs are lactose intolerant, so monitor their reaction to dairy before adding it to their diet regularly.
Tip: Use small cheese pieces as training treats for maximum motivation during obedience sessions.
Peanut Butter Peanut butter is a universal favorite among dogs. Its creamy texture and rich flavor make it a perfect treat, especially when stuffed into toys like Kongs or spread lightly on healthy treats. Always opt for unsalted, sugar-free peanut butter without xylitol, as this artificial sweetener is toxic to dogs.
Cooked Eggs Eggs are not only delicious but also packed with protein, healthy fats, and vitamins like B12. Many dogs love scrambled, boiled, or poached eggs. They make a quick and easy addition to your dog’s meal or a standalone snack.
Note: Always cook eggs thoroughly to avoid potential bacterial risks like salmonella.
Fruits Dogs Love Many dogs enjoy the natural sweetness of certain fruits, and these can also serve as healthy treats. Some popular fruits for dogs include:
Apples (without seeds) Blueberries Bananas Watermelon (seedless) Strawberries Fruits are low-calorie options packed with antioxidants and vitamins, making them a refreshing treat for dogs, especially in warmer months.
Vegetables That Appeal to Dogs Not all dogs are crazy about vegetables, but some enjoy crunchy options like carrots, cucumbers, and green beans. These veggies are low in calories, making them ideal for dogs watching their weight. Sweet potatoes (cooked and plain) are another favorite, offering a natural sweetness dogs love.
Fish and Seafood Fish such as salmon and tuna are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are excellent for a dog’s skin, coat, and brain health. Many dogs enjoy cooked fish or fish-based meals. Sardines packed in water (without added salt) are also a quick and healthy treat.
Specialized Dog Foods High-quality commercial dog food brands are formulated to cater to your dog’s taste buds while meeting their nutritional needs. Many premium brands include real meat, natural flavors, and added vitamins, making them both healthy and tasty. Some dogs might prefer wet food due to its stronger aroma and softer texture, while others enjoy crunchy kibble.
Broths and Stews Warm, unsalted bone broth or chicken broth can be added to your dog’s dry kibble for an enhanced flavor. Dogs love the aroma and taste of broths, which also keep them hydrated and improve digestion.
Treats Made Just for Dogs There’s no shortage of commercially available dog treats designed with flavors dogs adore, such as bacon, liver, or chicken. Look for natural and minimally processed treats to ensure your dog’s health isn’t compromised by added sugars or artificial additives.
Foods to Avoid While dogs love many types of food, there are some they should never eat:
Chocolate Grapes and raisins Onions and garlic Xylitol (artificial sweetener) Fatty or fried foods These foods can be toxic and cause serious health issues.
How to Discover Your Dog’s Favorite Food Every dog is unique, and their preferences may vary. Experiment with different options, always introducing new foods gradually and in moderation. Observe how your dog reacts to each new addition. Wagging tails, excited barks, or a clean bowl are good indicators that you’ve found a winner!
The food your dog enjoys the most is often a combination of what’s naturally tasty to them and what fits their individual personality and preferences. By prioritizing nutritious and dog-safe options, you can keep mealtime enjoyable and healthy. After all, a happy, well-fed dog is a happy companion for life!

Why Raw Feeding Is Not the Best Choice for Dogs in India
Fresh food for dogs options are becoming increasingly popular as pet owners seek to provide their dogs with more natural, nutritious diets. However, the practice of raw feeding, where dogs are fed raw meat and other ingredients, presents a unique set of challenges in India. While raw feeding has gained popularity worldwide for its perceived health benefits, in India, it may pose significant risks due to the country’s unique climate, meat quality issues, and a lack of proper regulations.
The Challenges of Raw Feeding in India
Limited Availability of Quality Proteins
In India, the most commonly available pet proteins are chicken, mutton (goat meat), fish, and eggs. While easy to source, novel proteins like beef, duck, rabbit, and turkey are difficult to find and often lack consistency in quality. This issue is even more pronounced in smaller cities and towns, where sourcing high-quality proteins for Homemade Dog Food can be unreliable.
The Issue of Meat Quality and Hormone Residues
The Indian poultry industry uses hormones to accelerate chicken growth, which can lead to harmful residues in meat. While free-range chicken is a healthier option for Fresh Meals for Dogs, it’s expensive and difficult to find. Many pet owners cannot afford or access hormone-free meat, which raises concerns about feeding raw meats to dogs, especially when using low-quality sources for Fresh food for dogs.
Local Butchered Meat and Hygiene Concerns
Meat from local butchers is often not stored under controlled conditions, increasing the risk of bacterial contamination. This poses a higher threat to dogs, whose digestive systems are more vulnerable to pathogens like Salmonella and E. coli. Raw meat sold without proper refrigeration further amplifies the risks associated with raw feeding in India and makes it unsafe for Homemade Dog Food.
Temperature Control Issues in Tropical Climates
India’s hot climate complicates the storage and transportation of raw meat. Even if cold chain logistics are used, frequent temperature fluctuations, power outages, and inconsistent refrigeration heighten the risk of bacterial growth in the meat. This makes raw feeding a potentially dangerous practice in India, especially when it comes to preparing Fresh Dog Food.
Lack of Regulations on Raw Meat
Unlike countries with stringent regulations for feeding raw meat to pets, India lacks clear and enforced safety standards. Without regulations, pet owners are left with limited options, relying on trust rather than verified safety standards when purchasing raw meat for their dogs to prepare Wet Dog Food.
Safer Alternatives to Raw Feeding
Given these challenges, it’s safer to opt for nutritious and safer alternatives like fresh meals for dogs. Cooked meals ensure proper hygiene and eliminate bacterial contamination risks. High-quality dog foods, including premium kibbles, offer balanced nutrition with a long shelf life and don’t require refrigeration. They are ideal for pet owners who want to provide their dogs with healthy and safe meals without the risks of raw feeding.
Choose Safe, Balanced Diets for Your Dog
While raw feeding may seem like a natural way to feed your dog, the risks involved in sourcing and storing raw meat in India make it an impractical choice. Instead, focus on providing your dog with a balanced, safe diet through Fresh food for dogs options. These alternatives are healthier, more convenient, and safer in the long run.
If you're considering offering fresh, homemade meals or looking for high-quality pet food brands, consulting a certified pet nutritionist is essential to ensure your dog is receiving the best nutrition possible. Your dog’s health and safety should always come first. For expert guidance and premium dog food options, Skylish is here to help you provide the best for your pet.

Affordable Dog Food- Nourishing Your Furry Friend Without Breaking the Bank
As pet owners, we all want the best for our furry friends, but providing quality nutrition doesn't have to come at a steep price. Affordable dog food options are abundant if you know where to look and what to prioritize. Here's a guide to help you choose cost-effective, nutritious dog food that keeps your pup healthy and happy.
Understanding Your Dog's Nutritional Needs
Before selecting an affordable dog food, it's essential to understand your dog's dietary requirements. Dogs need a balanced diet rich in:
Protein: Vital for muscle growth and repair. Look for sources like chicken, beef, or fish.
Fats: Provide energy and contribute to a shiny coat. Healthy fats like fish oil or chicken fat are great options.
Carbohydrates: Offer energy and fiber, with grains or vegetables serving as excellent sources.
Vitamins and Minerals: Support overall health and immunity.
When shopping for dog food, ensure the ingredients list reflects a balance of these nutrients. Avoid fillers like excessive corn or soy, as they provide little nutritional value.
Tips for Finding Affordable Dog Food
Look for Generic or Store Brands Many store brands offer high-quality, affordable dog food options. These are often made with similar ingredients as premium brands but come without the hefty price tag.
Buy in Bulk Purchasing larger bags of dog food can save money in the long run. Be sure to store the food properly in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
Check for Sales and Discounts Keep an eye out for promotions, loyalty programs, or coupons from pet stores and online retailers. Shopping during sales can significantly reduce costs.
Consider Dry Food (Kibble) Dry dog food is typically more affordable than wet food and has a longer shelf life. High-quality kibble can provide all the nutrients your dog needs.
DIY Dog Food Making your own dog food at home can be cost-effective and allows you to control the ingredients. A mix of lean protein, vegetables, and whole grains can form a balanced meal. Consult your vet to ensure you're meeting your dog's nutritional needs.
Conclusion
Affordable dog food options are plentiful if you shop smart and prioritize your dog's health. By understanding nutritional needs, exploring budget-friendly brands, and considering homemade meals, you can provide your furry friend with wholesome meals without overspending.
Your dog's wagging tail and boundless energy are proof that good nutrition doesn’t have to cost a fortune!

Get the Inside Scoop on How to ? Keep Your Pet Healthy with Dog Food
Introduction
Keeping your pet healthy is about more than just exercise and love; it’s also about providing the right food. Just as humans need a balanced diet to thrive, your dog’s health depends on what they eat. Choosing the right dog food can make a world of difference in their energy, coat, and even temperament. Let’s dig into the details of how the right dog food can keep your pet happy and healthy.
Why Choosing the Right Dog Food Matters
A balanced diet is essential to a dog’s health, impacting everything from their energy levels to their skin and coat health. High-quality dog food provides the necessary nutrients, supporting a strong immune system and helping to prevent illnesses. Just as with people, food is the foundation of a dog’s health and vitality.
Understanding Dog Food Ingredients
Key Ingredients to Look For: A good dog food should contain high-quality protein sources, like chicken, beef, or fish, for muscle health. Carbohydrates, such as brown rice or sweet potatoes, offer energy, while healthy fats from sources like fish oil or flaxseed contribute to skin and coat health.
Ingredients to Avoid: Avoid foods with fillers like corn, wheat, and soy, as they offer little nutritional value and can cause allergies in some dogs.
Types of Dog Food Available
Dry Dog Food (Kibble)
Kibble is one of the most convenient and affordable dog food options. It is easy to store, helps keep teeth cleaner, and is often nutritionally balanced.
Wet Dog Food (Canned Food)
Canned food has a high moisture content, which is beneficial for dogs needing extra hydration. However, it is more expensive and needs proper storage after opening.
Raw Food Diet
A raw diet consists of uncooked meats, bones, and vegetables, aiming to mimic a dog's ancestral diet. This option is not for everyone and requires careful planning to meet all nutritional needs.
Home-Cooked Dog Food
Home-cooked diets allow control over ingredients, but balancing nutrients can be challenging. Consulting with a vet is crucial for this option.
Benefits of High-Quality Dog Food
High-quality dog food can improve your dog’s coat and skin, aid digestion, boost their energy levels, and reduce the risk of certain health issues. Investing in premium dog food is often worth it in the long run, saving on potential vet bills.
How to Read Dog Food Labels
Ingredient Lists and Terms: When reading labels, ingredients are listed by weight. Look for real meat as one of the first ingredients, and avoid fillers and by-products.
What “Complete and Balanced” Means: If a food is labeled as “complete and balanced,” it meets the minimum nutritional requirements for that life stage, which is essential for maintaining overall health.
Protein, Fat, and Carbohydrate Content: Dogs need a balance of protein, fats, and carbohydrates, with protein being the primary focus for muscle health.
Common Dog Food Myths Debunked
Grain-Free Diets: Grain-free isn’t necessarily healthier. Grains can be nutritious and provide fiber, unless your dog has a grain allergy.
Human Food vs. Dog Food: While some human foods are safe for dogs, most aren’t balanced for their dietary needs.
Organic and Natural Labels: “Organic” doesn’t always mean better quality. It’s more important to focus on ingredient quality rather than labels.
Recognizing Allergies and Food Sensitivities in Dogs
Signs of Allergies: If your dog has chronic itching, ear infections, or digestive issues, food allergies might be to blame.
Common Allergens in Dog Food: Beef, chicken, dairy, and wheat are common allergens. Switching to a novel protein like duck or lamb can help.
Managing Allergies: Choose limited-ingredient diets or hypoallergenic dog food to reduce allergy symptoms.
Choosing Dog Food by Life Stage
Puppy Nutrition
Puppies need food that supports growth with high protein and fat levels, along with essential vitamins and minerals.
Adult Dog Nutrition
Adult dogs need balanced nutrition for maintenance, with moderate protein and fat levels.
Senior Dog Nutrition
Senior dogs often need fewer calories but more fiber and joint-supporting nutrients, such as glucosamine.
The Role of Protein in Dog Food
Protein is vital for muscle and tissue health. Quality sources include chicken, beef, and fish. Dogs also benefit from variety, so switching proteins occasionally can be helpful.
Dog Food and Weight Management
Managing a healthy weight in dogs prevents joint strain and other health issues. Look for formulas labeled for weight control or reduced-calorie if your dog needs to shed a few pounds.
Specialty Diets for Specific Needs
Diet for Sensitive Stomachs
Dogs with sensitive stomachs may benefit from easily digestible food, with limited ingredients and no artificial additives.
Diet for Active Dogs
Active dogs need higher protein and fat to support their energy levels, similar to how athletes need extra calories.
Diet for Joint Health
For older dogs or those prone to joint issues, foods with added glucosamine and chondroitin can support joint health.
Homemade Dog Food: Pros and Cons
Homemade dog food allows complete control over ingredients, which is ideal for dogs with allergies. However, it can be time-consuming, and improper nutrition can lead to deficiencies.
Tips for Transitioning to a New Dog Food
Switching food too quickly can upset a dog’s stomach. Gradually mix the new food with the old over a week, increasing the ratio of the new food each day.
Conclusion
Your dog’s diet plays a fundamental role in their overall health and happiness. By choosing high-quality, balanced food, you can ensure they lead a long, active life. Remember, always consult your vet if you’re unsure about the best food for your dog’s specific needs.

How to Choose the Right Dry Dog Food for Your Pet
Selecting the best dry dog food for your furry companion is one of the most important decisions you can make as a pet parent. A nutritious diet supports their energy levels, keeps their coat shiny, strengthens their immune system, and promotes overall health. With a plethora of brands and formulations available in the market, the process of finding the ideal option can be overwhelming. This guide simplifies the process, offering insights to help you choose the best dry dog food for your beloved pet, particularly if you are in Australia, where premium options abound.
1. Understand Your Dog’s Nutritional Needs
Every dog has unique dietary requirements based on their age, breed, size, activity level, and health status.
Consider Age
Puppies need nutrient-dense food with higher protein and fat content to fuel their growth and development.
Adult dogs require balanced maintenance diets with moderate levels of protein and fat.
Senior dogs may benefit from formulas that are lower in calories but fortified with nutrients for joint and cognitive health.
Factor in Size
Small breeds often require smaller kibble sizes and nutrient-rich formulas tailored to their fast metabolisms.
Large breeds benefit from food that supports joint health and prevents rapid weight gain, reducing strain on their bones.
Activity Level
Active dogs or working breeds may need a high-energy diet, while sedentary pets require fewer calories to prevent weight gain.
Health Conditions
Dogs with specific health concerns, such as allergies, digestive sensitivities, or chronic conditions like diabetes, may require specialized dry dog food formulations. Always consult your veterinarian for tailored dietary advice.
2. Look for High-Quality Ingredients
The quality of ingredients directly impacts the nutritional value of your dog’s food.
Prioritize Whole Proteins
The Best Dry Dog Food Australia in Australia and worldwide lists a whole protein, such as chicken, beef, or fish, as the first ingredient. Avoid products with vague terms like "meat meal" or "by-products."
Include Healthy Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates like brown rice, sweet potatoes, or oats provide energy. Opt for whole grains and avoid fillers like corn and soy, which offer little nutritional value and can trigger allergies.
Don’t Forget Fats
Healthy fats, such as those derived from fish oil or flaxseed, support a shiny coat and healthy skin. Look for omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the ingredient list.
Check for Fruits and Vegetables
Natural sources of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, such as blueberries, spinach, and carrots, enhance the overall nutritional profile.
Avoid Artificial Additives
Stay clear of products with artificial preservatives, flavors, or colors. Natural preservatives like tocopherols (vitamin E) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) are safer options.
3. Check for AAFCO Certification
In Australia and many other countries, reputable dry dog food brands adhere to the nutritional guidelines set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). Look for a statement on the packaging indicating that the food meets or exceeds these standards.
4. Consider Your Dog’s Palatability Preferences
Dogs can be surprisingly picky eaters. If your pet refuses to eat one brand, try another with a different protein source or flavor. Some brands include trial-sized packs so you can test before committing to a large purchase.
5. Assess the Kibble Size and Texture
The size and texture of the kibble are more important than you might think.
Small dogs benefit from smaller kibble that’s easy for their tiny jaws to chew.
Large dogs prefer larger kibble that encourages chewing and helps maintain dental health.
For dogs with dental issues, some dry dog food options are designed to be softer or easier to chew.
6. Budget-Friendly Options Without Compromising Quality
While premium brands often deliver excellent quality, there are cost-effective options that provide balanced nutrition. Compare ingredient lists and ensure the product still meets high standards.
7. Best Dry Dog Food Options in Australia
Australia offers a wide range of dry dog food brands known for their quality and safety standards. Here are a few top-rated options to consider:

5. Taste of the Wild
With unique protein sources like venison and bison, Taste of the Wild offers grain-free options that mimic the ancestral diet of dogs.
8. Tips for Transitioning to a New Dry Dog Food
Switching to a new dry dog food requires a gradual process to avoid upsetting your dog’s stomach.
Day 1-3: Mix 25% new food with 75% old food.
Day 4-6: Increase the ratio to 50% new food and 50% old food.
Day 7-9: Use 75% new food and 25% old food.
Day 10+: Fully transition to the new food.
Monitor your dog during this period for signs of digestive distress, such as diarrhea or vomiting.
9. Importance of Portion Control
Even the best dry dog food can lead to weight issues if overfed. Follow the feeding guidelines provided on the packaging, adjusting as necessary for your dog’s size, age, and activity level. Using a measuring cup ensures accurate portioning.
10. Monitor Your Dog’s Response
After selecting a dry dog food, keep an eye on how your dog reacts to it. Positive indicators include:
A shiny, healthy coat.
Consistent energy levels.
Healthy stools (firm and well-formed).
If you notice issues like excessive itching, vomiting, or changes in appetite, consult your veterinarian.
11. Consider Grain-Free Options When Necessary
Grain-free dry dog food is a good choice for dogs with grain sensitivities or allergies. However, recent studies suggest a potential link between grain-free diets and heart issues in some breeds. Always consult your veterinarian before making this switch.
12. Online Reviews and Recommendations
Reading reviews and seeking recommendations from fellow pet owners or veterinarians can help identify the best dry dog food for your pet. In Australia, many online pet stores also offer detailed reviews and ratings to guide your decision.
13. Where to Buy the Best Dry Dog Food in Australia
You can find premium dry dog food at:
Local pet stores: Offering personalized advice and recommendations.
Online retailers: Sites like Petbarn, Pet Circle, and Budget Pet Products often have extensive collections with competitive pricing.
Veterinarian offices: Specialized formulas for health concerns are often available here.
14. Final Thoughts
Choosing the right dry dog food for your pet doesn’t have to be daunting. By understanding your dog’s needs, prioritizing high-quality ingredients, and exploring top-rated options available in Australia, you can ensure that your furry friend receives the best possible nutrition. Regularly monitor your dog’s health and consult with your veterinarian to make any necessary adjustments to their diet.
Investing time and effort into finding the perfect dry dog food pays off in the form of a happy, healthy pet who thrives for years to come. Whether you’re choosing among premium Australian brands or exploring global options, make informed choices to support your dog’s well-being.

How Fresh Food for Dogs Improves Digestion
Feeding fresh food for dogs can significantly improve their digestive health. Unlike highly processed kibble, fresh food is easier to digest because it contains natural ingredients rich in essential nutrients and moisture. This promotes better nutrient absorption and prevents common digestive issues such as bloating or constipation.
For dogs with sensitive stomachs, switching to homemade dog food can reduce the risk of food intolerances, as you can control the quality and source of ingredients. Fresh food is free from artificial additives and fillers, which are often hard for dogs to digest.
A diet tailored to your pet's needs supports a healthy gut microbiome and overall vitality. For premium fresh food for dogs, trust Skylish to deliver high-quality, nutritious meals your dog will love. Choose Skylish for healthier, happier pets!
