Clothing that breathes
Clothing that breathes
There’s a few factors consumer’s can implement to be more economically and environmentally friendly when purchasing, caring for and disposing of garments. Fast fashion is inexpensive clothing produced rapidly by mass-market retailers in response to the latest trends. The problem with this and today's expectations of social media has created a need to keep up with the latest styles and wearing items to create content usually one off or a few times occasions. I feel we’re lacking appreciation in the garments we’re able to buy so easily. Taking small one percenters to take care of your items can be environmentally friendly, make the most out of your money spent and gives the clothing a lifetime.
Awareness: knowledge or perception of a situation or fact. In the context of fast fashion consumers need to be more aware in the materials and manufacturing process. Knowledge about the garments your purchasing can contribute to how long a life they last. The turn over on fast fashion has caused consumers to have quick access to current designs at a cheaper price, seems like the best of both worlds. Though brands are single handedly filling landfills across the world, the quality of these items aren’t good. Materials can also contain harmful chemicals in fibres, dyes and prints that are finely disclosed. These products are manufactured in third-world countries where these chemicals aren’t overlooked and still legalised, though sold worldwide causing possible health issues such as cancer and birth defects. Think again why there so cheap in the first place.
There’s a few different ways we can take care of our clothing to uphold its durability and lifetime. We can adapt things like learning basic repairs, airing out clothing and washing only when necessary. There’s basic everyday washing instructions like cold wash only, avoid tumble drying, not using harsh chemicals or bleach, not ironing prints, not wringing items and hand washing delicates. Nylon, polyester, acrylic and other synthetic material makes up 60% of material in clothing worldwide. Not being conscious to specific needs of individual garments can contribute to micro-plastic pollution through water supply from items with a synthetic blend. To find out how much plastic your washing machine is sending out to the sea head to the link and read more.
https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2018/9/19/17800654/clothes-plastic-pollution-polyester-washing-machine. Other than the environmental factors taking care of your garments ensures how long of a life they’ll have, consumers will get more use out of them and keep them in good condition. Consciously disposing, donating or repurposing items can also give clothes a longer life. According to the Council of textile and fashion Australia, $500 million worth of fashion disposed in Australian landfills yearly, 95% of it could have been recycled or reused. If we care more for our items giving them a longer life span and keeping up their quality the easier it is to rehome preloved goods. Here’s some tips to reduce, reuse and recycle unwanted items:
- Reduce your need to recycle clothing by buying for the long run - Buying quality items that will overall last longer - Following care instructions - Give away items or take to the local donation bin  - Buy, swap or trade in items on online marketplaces - Repurpose any items for any cleaning duties

Manrags will recycle your glad rags
The launch of the streamlined self-service digital textile collection service means that households can elect a convenient time to have their unwanted clothes, shoes and textiles picked up from home to be recycled.
Following Manrags’ recently launched textile recycling initiative that receives old textiles from consumers for re-use or recycling, the company has joined forces with CouriersPlease (CP) to launch a direct-to-consumer textile collection service that can be booked online by the customer.
The new program is offered on the Manrags website and is powered by CP’s self-service returns solution, Boomerang, where consumers can directly book and schedule a pick-up of their old textiles from their front door at a time of their choosing.
CP partnered with Manrags because of their aligned mission to create a sustainable future. For CP, the partnership is the first of several sustainability initiatives it is implementing over the next 12 months, as part of the company’s green focus.
Around 60,000 tonnes of unusable donations to charities in Australia are sent to landfill each year, with over $13 million spent in waste management by charity and opportunity shops alone.1 Every kilogram of goods kept out of landfill through recycling and re-use prevents 3–4 kg of greenhouse gases polluting the air. Manrags has kept more than 30 tonnes of clothing out of landfill to date through its textile recycling program, and during the height of the pandemic received more than 20 tonnes of textiles in just six weeks. Through the CP partnership, Manrags will be fast-tracking its textile recycling program and has set the bold challenge to prevent 500,000 kg of greenhouse gas emissions by 2022.
How the CP Boomerang and Manrags partnership works
The Manrags and CP partnership removes any potential barriers between consumers recycling and re-using goods — such as charities not accepting donations or not-for-re-use items — through the self-service Boomerang portal. To book a textile collection service, consumers ‘purchase’ their collection on the Manrags website for $25, which allows for up to 10 kg of unwanted textiles to be picked up from their home. Upon registering their details and receiving confirmation of their payment, customers will receive a redemption code from Manrags that will enable them to book their textile collection via the Boomerang portal. This allows them to directly book a textile pick-up at a time that suits them. Customers then package up their old textiles into a box for a CP franchisee to collect from their home.
The CP Boomerang process makes it simple for Aussies to recycle old clothing, linen and shoes through the direct-to-consumer digital collection service. In exchange for organising a pick-up, consumers receive a $25 credit with Manrags the first time they participate, to redeem at the Manrags online store.
CP’s sustainable future
In addition to the digital textile recycling partnership, CP is rolling out a textile recycling point at all manned depots around the country. There will be CP- and Manrags-branded wheelie bins and signage positioned at each to educate and encourage the uptake of the recycling program among its employees. All CouriersPlease franchisees and employees have recently commenced using the service to recycle their old uniforms as well as drop off their previously loved textiles from home.
CP Chief Commercial Officer Paul Roper said, “CouriersPlease is striving to make all aspects of our business greener. As such, we will be rolling out several sustainable initiatives over the next 12 months as we strive to become a carbon-neutral carrier.
“We’re thrilled to embark on this journey and partner with Manrags — an organisation which is so passionate about eradicating textile waste in the country — and see Boomerang, Australia’s first self-service returns portal, used as a ‘green’ solution.
“Boomerang makes the recycling process easy for Australian households to have their preloved textiles collected without needing to leave home. Aussies simply pack up their items in a box, no bigger than a suitcase and no more than 10 kg, and a CP franchisee collects it from their door. We believe the ease of Boomerang will encourage households to give used items a second life and look towards programs such as the Manrags initiative as a way they can help our environment.
“To contribute even further and encourage our people, our CP franchisees will have their old uniforms shredded and turned into new useful pieces through Manrags’ recycling program. It will play a big role in our overarching environmental strategy aimed at reducing our carbon footprint.”
Manrags founder and Managing Director Michael Elias said, “Our new partnership with CouriersPlease is a further step towards making the textile recycling process accessible and seamless for the public. There’s no reason for clothing, shoes and linen to end up in landfill now as we’ve created a fast and seamless pick-up experience for households. We then sort through the items and allow charities to access anything in good condition, while the remaining items are prepared for repurposing. For instance, jeans can be made into tote bags and aprons, recycled to create new yarn or shredded to create insulation or stuffing for pet beds.
“At Manrags, we have set the goal to prevent 500,000 kg of greenhouse gas emissions by 2022. Together with CP and their Boomerang service, we believe we can achieve this goal and take giant steps to eradicate textile waste in Australia.”

HOW I STARTED ONCE LOVED AUSTRALIA
Tumblr media
After finishing my Business Administration studies in Europe four years ago, I decided to not face the corporate world yet and travelled through Asia and Australia for eight months.
However, after time my luggage got heavier and my savings smaller and smaller - but I wasn’t ready yet to go back home! So I started looking for a way to sell a few of my clothes online like I used to back in Europe where you have an abundance of fashionable websites for exactly this dilemma.
I could have gone with Gumtree or eBay but didn’t find exactly what I was looking for: a fashionable online marketplace for Australia where I would find girls to sell my clothes to - and shop their preloved goodness rather than spending a fortune on brand new pieces.
I started spending my days in the public library of Gold Coast, researching the costs of building such a platform but quickly realised this would be beyond my own savings (living it up in Australia ain’t cheap!). I wrote a business plan to send to investors when my lucky stars suddenly aligned. I briefly mentioned my vision to a Parisian friend of mine - who happened to be a software developer and supported me with the initial setup of the site.

What then followed was months of sleepless nights watching YouTube tutorials on SEO, FTP and everything else that’s included in setting up an online platform (think googling: ‘what does FTP mean for dummies’ and ‘help my entire website crashed what to do’).
When http://www.oncelovedaus.com finally went live I was already back in Europe, working as a fashion assistant for Condé Nast publications. Having found my partner in crime in Australia, it frequently draws me back to this beautiful country on the other side of the world to push the boundaries of selling clothes online every day a bit further.
