PERRELET TURBINE PILOT
The Perrelet Turbine Pilot does not subscribe to the traditional pilot’s watch style. On the contrary, the Swiss firm has conceived a very original aviation-themed timepiece that sidesteps convention with its bold use of colour and animated dialscape. Angus Davies gets ‘hands-on’ with this aviation-themed watch.
Back in the 1930s, the German Ministry of Aviation, or Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM), created a specification for pilots’ watches. These were intended for use by the Luftwaffe, serving as a supplement to the plane’s cockpit instruments. The watches had to be 55mm in diameter and needed to have a large winding crown, facilitating manipulation even when wearing gloves.
The RLM also made additional stipulations that suppliers were obliged to meet. For example, all pilots’ watches had to be equipped with a hacking seconds, allowing the wearer to halt the second hand by pulling out the crown. This was an essential feature when synchronising watches ahead of a bombing mission.
The watch also needed to have a Breguet hairspring, chronometer certification and a long leather strap allowing it to be worn over a flying suit. Furthermore, the RLM specification stated the watch had to be housed in an anti-magnetic case. Even the triangular-shaped index at noon, with two dots on either side, was a requirement of the RLM. Several companies were entrusted with supplying the Luftwaffe with these watches, sometimes termed ‘Grosse Fliegeruhr’ or ‘B-Uhr’ timepieces. These firms included Lange & Söhne, Laco (Lacher & Co), Stowa (Walter Storz), Wempe and IWC.
Many pilots’ watches after WWII continued to incorporate elements that were originally specified by the RLM. Although the Grosse Fliegeruhr may have been robust, precise and highly legible, it was never intended to be attractive. Today, some pilots’ watches have received a touch of cosmetic surgery with a nip and tuck here and there, improving wearability and augmenting eye-appeal. However, in many cases, the genre’s utilitarian origins still remain apparent.
Recently, I had the opportunity to get hands-on with the Perrelet Turbine Pilot and appraise its composition at close quarters. The Maison from Biel/Bienne has not followed the same path as others, preferring to look at the pilots’ watch with a fresh set of eyes. Vibrant colours enliven the model’s dial which also incorporates an enchanting dose of animation. Consistent with traditional pilot’s watches, the Perrelet Turbine Pilot is a practical proposition, but it also possesses a fresh-faced, handsome visage.
The dial
The Perrelet Turbine Pilot is available in seven different variants, encompassing a variety of hues and even a camouflage variant, ideally suited to covert military action. My press sample was rather more flamboyant, sporting various ebullient red dial details.
White luminescent hour and minute hands convey meaning with notable efficiency. The boss in the centre of the dial, connected to the canon pinion, is oversized, introducing a stylish departure from the norm.
The hours are denoted with plump Arabic numerals at the cardinal points and rectangular batons in between. Interestingly, the indexes are affixed to the underside of the sapphire crystal. The dialogue between the hands and indexes is notably clear and intelligible.
As the model’s name implies, the watch is endowed with the Maison’s ‘turbine’ system. To understand the rationale for this system, it is necessary to look at the company’s past.
Abraham-Louis Perrelet invented the automatic pocket watch (1777) and it remains very much at the heart of everything today’s eponymous brand does. In 1995, the firm released its first ‘double rotor’ watch. Both of these rotors were functional. However, the dial-side rotor proved particularly interesting to clients who were no doubt captivated by its revolving motion. Perrelet unveiled the inaugural ‘Turbine’ model in 2009. The dial-side rotor didn’t tension the mainspring but was designed to deliver a unique animated display. The turbine blades, similar to those found on an aeroplane engine, readily spin, intermittently revealing detail on the lower dial level.
Beneath each index, located on the said lower dial level, are red chevron markings emulating those often found on cockpit instruments.
The indications include a black central sweep seconds hand with a prominent orange tip. Perrelet has incorporated other flight-themed references such as the fletching style counterweight affixed to the central sweep seconds. Quite simply, the Maison has expended much effort on this watch, lavishing various surfaces with a plethora of details.
Various scales in eye-popping red hues encircle the main dial area. An additional scale adorns the bezel. The aviation style slide rule doffs its hat to a pre-electronic era when pilots made calculations manually.
The case
Measuring 48mm in diameter, the scale of the Perrelet Turbine Pilot may prove off-putting to some potential buyers. However, when affixed to the wrist, the watch feels smaller than the stated dimensions suggest. When the watch is placed on its side atop a table, the strap readily curves, eager to encircle the wrist. Another reason for the watch appearing smaller is that the lugs are comparatively short and they arc sharply downwards. Personally, I found the watch granted an ergonomic union with my wrist and it conferred impressive wearer comfort.
The stainless steel case is dressed in black PVD, imbuing it with a stealthy nature and providing a wonderful juxtaposition with the model’s vibrant red tones. Four sections emanating from the caseband rise upwards and hug the bezel. Two similar sections of metal, positioned centrally between each set of lugs, provide a further link between the strap and the watch head.
Perrelet has equipped the Turbine Pilot with a ‘bi-material’ leather strap enriched with an alligator pattern. Interestingly, it was only after I read the specification sheet that I determined the strap wasn’t made from reptile skin. As more people express concern about using alligator skin, Perrelet’s approach seems very sensible.
Tactility is an important factor when appraising the composition of any watch. With an outstretched index finger and a keen eye, the Perrelet Turbine Pilot rewards the senses with a palpable sense of quality. The crown features cross knurling, inviting the wearer to caress it and derive cathartic benefit from its texture.
To the rear of the watch, an exhibition caseback affords views of the self-winding movement.
The movement
The Perrelet Turbine Pilot is fitted with an in-house automatic movement, the calibre P-331-MH. Recently, I reviewed this movement in detail, however, for those readers who are time-poor, I have detailed some points below that are worth mentioning:
The bridges that are positioned centre stage are adorned with perlage, while the visible edges of the mainplate feature colimaçon.
The oscillating weight is an openworked design, affording superior views of the components below.
COSC certification provides independent validation of the model’s accuracy.
Various types of tests have also been performed to ensure robustness, water resistance and tolerance to various temperatures. This test regime forms part of the Chronofiable certification standard (independent assessment).
The rate is adjusted with an index-adjuster
Assuming the watch is fully wound, the Perrelet Turbine Pilot will run autonomously for 42 hours.
Closing remarks
The dial of the Perrelet Turbine Pilot proves very legible. By fitting the indexes to the underside of the crystal, adding the turbine and the lower dial level, Perrelet has introduced layers of detail that confer depth and masterfully play with light.
Moreover, by equipping the dial with various graduated scales, the Swiss marque has endowed the display with many numbers and markings. Those prospective purchasers who prefer less detail can select one of the company’s Turbine Evo models which eschew the aforementioned red elements, thereby bestowing a calmer temperament. Personally, when wearing the Turbine Pilot, I adored its liberal application of red hues. This is a watch that exudes optimism and will readily elicit a smile on any face.
One thing is clear, Perrelet has never looked over anyone’s shoulder and copied their work. Indeed, its design is very much its own. Some traditional pilots’ watches were produced with practical considerations in mind and little thought to the aesthetic charms they might proffer. Over the years, some military pilots’ watches have received a make-over with perhaps a green dial or by using more avant-garde case materials, etc. However, the approach taken by Perrelet has not been to adapt an existing style of watch, but to conceive something fresh and new. Indeed, Perrelet has looked to the heavens and conceived a timepiece that delivers both practicality, ingenious animation and an extraordinary amount of style.

But you can’t wear a fine watch without understanding how it functions! Sure, you can wear a watch because you like the looks of it. It’s easy to look down at your wrist to find the time, and it’s great to always have it on you. But the most fascinating thing about a watch is how it works. Watch 101
Basic Watch Components:
Before we delve into the inside workings of a watch, it’s important to understand the outside components. The following elements make up almost every fine watch:
Bezel-the bezel is the outer ring of a watch that holds the dial-side crystal in place. They can be screwed or snapped onto the case. Some bezels, typically those on sport watches, rotate in order to record elapsed time.
Bracelet/Strap- the watch bracelet is typically a flexible metal band of connected links that wraps around the wearer’s wrist to keep the watch in place. The bracelet is referred to as the “strap” when it’s made out of non-metal materials such as leather or nylon.
Case- the watch case is the housing for the dial and movement; it protects the small inner workings of a watch from the environment. Cases can be made from different metals and come in a variety of different shapes.
Complications- watch complications are different functions of a watch other than the basic time display. See watch complications below for more information.
Crown- the watch crown is used to set the time and date on a watch. It is a small knob, typically located at the 3 o’clock position on a watch.
Crystal- the watch crystal is the translucent disc that rests above the dial. It protects the dial and hands from water and dirt. Three common materials used to make watch crystals are synthetic sapphire, mineral glass, and acrylic. Synthetic sapphire is used in fine watchmaking since it is more scratch resistant.
Dial- the dial, sometimes referred to as the “face” of the watch, is where the hands and markers are located, a visual interface to a watch that actually displays the time.
Hands- watch hands designate the specific time. They are made of thin strips of metal and are attached to a center point of rotation. Styles range depending on certain types of watches and their specified uses.
Lugs- lugs are attached to the watch case at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions. They are pieces of metal extending from the case that help hold the watch bracelet/strap in place.
Lume- lume, also referred to as luminosity, is applied to the dial and hands of most watches to improve visibility in low-light conditions.
Sub-dial- a subsidiary dial, or sub-dial, is a small dial on the main dial that shows additional information. These are more commonly seen on chronographs in order to display hours, minutes, and seconds.
Watch 101: Mechanics
Now that you understand the basic watch components, let’s talk about all the small parts inside a watch that make it tick. Every part has its own specific function, and they all work together in order to tell accurate time.
Amplitude- amplitude is how big of a rotation the balance wheel moves per oscillation.
Bridges-bridges are for structure, hence the name. They are attached to the mainplate via screws, and hold wheels and other parts in place.
Barrel and Mainspring- The mainspring is what provides power to the watch. When wound, it generates the power needed to provide accurate time. The barrel is a large gear where the powerful mainspring is housed.
Beat Error-Beat error is the measurement of time between ��tick” and “tock.” Then, the two are compared for accuracy. In an ideal world, the durations are equal, meaning the beat error is zero.
Balance Wheel- similar to a pendulum, the balance wheel is the timekeeping device in mechanical watches. It is a weighted wheel that rotates back and forth. The balance spring, or hairspring, restores force to the balance wheel. Working together, the balance wheel and hairspring regulate the entire timepiece.
Center Wheel- appropriately named, the center wheel is located in the center of the movement. Driven by the barrel, the center wheel rotates once per hour. The minute hand is attached to the center wheel via the cannon pinion.
Crown Wheel- located between the winding stem and ratchet wheel, the crown wheel serves as an intermediate wheel in transferring torque from the winding of the crown to the ratchet wheel.
Cannon Pinion-the heart of the motion works; the cannon pinion translates the movement of the wheels inside the watch into the time keeping display on the dial. Typically, the cannon pinion is attached to the center wheel and is the post the minute hand is set on.
Click- the click is what holds the ratchet wheel against the force of the mainspring, which allows the watch to be wound. Ever heard a watch click as its being wound? That’s the sound of the click impacting each tooth of the ratchet wheel.
Detent Escapement-using a very thin blade spring with a jewel mounted on it, the detent escapement holds the escape wheel in place. Then, a jewel on the balance trips the spring as it passes, which releases the escape wheel so it can advance.
Escape Wheel- the escape wheel is part of the escapement. It interacts with the pallet fork to translate rotational motion into lateral impulses.
Escapement- the escapement manages the release of power from the mainspring in a way that can be regulated by the balance wheel and hairspring. Without the escapement, the watch would unwind in an incontrollable fashion.
Endshake-the amount of vertical motion a pivot has in a jewel-hole. Endshake is necessary for smooth operation of the gear train. Generally, the amount of endshake decreases towards the escapement while it increases on wheels towards the barrel.
Fourth Wheel- in watches with sub-dials that display seconds, the second hand is attached to the extended fourth wheel pivot. It rotates once per minute.
Frequency- the frequency is how many times a balance wheel vibrates per hour. This can be expressed in Hertz (Hz) or in vibrations per hour (vph).

Jewels-jewels are used to reduce friction and wear created by rotating wheels and pivots. Jewels are made of synthetic sapphire because of its hardness. Without jewels, the entire mainplate or bridge would have to be replaced when pivots caused any mechanical wear.
Keyless Works- this component allows the movement to be wound and the time set via the winding stem. The keyless works allows for two (or more) winding stem positions to engage different gear trains in the movement.

Ever since the invention of the sundial some 5,000 years ago we’ve been fascinated by horology, or the science of timekeeping. We created the concept of time so we could break up our days and better organize our busy schedules. Now, we depend on the time to keep track of our lives. And with the advancement of technology, clocks are everywhere- our cell phones, our computers, our cars, and plastered on at least one wall of every room we enter.
Why, then, have wristwatches not become obsolete? You would think that with clocks being so easily accessible, we would no longer feel the need to wear one on our wrists. But this is definitely not the case. The answer is simple- to watch enthusiasts a wristwatch is more than just a keeper of time. A luxury watch is seen as a masterful work of art, the epitome of craftsmanship and engineering, and of course, a way to express your personal style. Even with the invention of newer smart watches, the classic fine watch will probably never lose its appeal.
But you can’t wear a fine watch without understanding how it functions! Sure, you can wear a watch because you like the looks of it. It’s easy to look down at your wrist to find the time, and it’s great to always have it on you. But the most fascinating thing about a watch is how it works. Watch 101
Basic Watch Components:
Before we delve into the inside workings of a watch, it’s important to understand the outside components. The following elements make up almost every fine watch:
Bezel-the bezel is the outer ring of a watch that holds the dial-side crystal in place. They can be screwed or snapped onto the case. Some bezels, typically those on sport watches, rotate in order to record elapsed time.
Bracelet/Strap- the watch bracelet is typically a flexible metal band of connected links that wraps around the wearer’s wrist to keep the watch in place. The bracelet is referred to as the “strap” when it’s made out of non-metal materials such as leather or nylon.
Case- the watch case is the housing for the dial and movement; it protects the small inner workings of a watch from the environment. Cases can be made from different metals and come in a variety of different shapes.
Complications- watch complications are different functions of a watch other than the basic time display. See watch complications below for more information.
Crown- the watch crown is used to set the time and date on a watch. It is a small knob, typically located at the 3 o’clock position on a watch.
Crystal- the watch crystal is the translucent disc that rests above the dial. It protects the dial and hands from water and dirt. Three common materials used to make watch crystals are synthetic sapphire, mineral glass, and acrylic. Synthetic sapphire is used in fine watchmaking since it is more scratch resistant.
Dial- the dial, sometimes referred to as the “face” of the watch, is where the hands and markers are located, a visual interface to a watch that actually displays the time.
Hands- watch hands designate the specific time. They are made of thin strips of metal and are attached to a center point of rotation. Styles range depending on certain types of watches and their specified uses.
Lugs- lugs are attached to the watch case at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions. They are pieces of metal extending from the case that help hold the watch bracelet/strap in place.
Lume- lume, also referred to as luminosity, is applied to the dial and hands of most watches to improve visibility in low-light conditions.
Sub-dial- a subsidiary dial, or sub-dial, is a small dial on the main dial that shows additional information. These are more commonly seen on chronographs in order to display hours, minutes, and seconds.
Watch 101: Mechanics
Now that you understand the basic watch components, let’s talk about all the small parts inside a watch that make it tick. Every part has its own specific function, and they all work together in order to tell accurate time.
Amplitude- amplitude is how big of a rotation the balance wheel moves per oscillation.
Bridges-bridges are for structure, hence the name. They are attached to the mainplate via screws, and hold wheels and other parts in place.
Barrel and Mainspring- The mainspring is what provides power to the watch. When wound, it generates the power needed to provide accurate time. The barrel is a large gear where the powerful mainspring is housed.
Beat Error-Beat error is the measurement of time between “tick” and “tock.” Then, the two are compared for accuracy. In an ideal world, the durations are equal, meaning the beat error is zero.
Balance Wheel- similar to a pendulum, the balance wheel is the timekeeping device in mechanical watches. It is a weighted wheel that rotates back and forth. The balance spring, or hairspring, restores force to the balance wheel. Working together, the balance wheel and hairspring regulate the entire timepiece.
Center Wheel- appropriately named, the center wheel is located in the center of the movement. Driven by the barrel, the center wheel rotates once per hour. The minute hand is attached to the center wheel via the cannon pinion.
Crown Wheel- located between the winding stem and ratchet wheel, the crown wheel serves as an intermediate wheel in transferring torque from the winding of the crown to the ratchet wheel.
Cannon Pinion-the heart of the motion works; the cannon pinion translates the movement of the wheels inside the watch into the time keeping display on the dial. Typically, the cannon pinion is attached to the center wheel and is the post the minute hand is set on.
Click- the click is what holds the ratchet wheel against the force of the mainspring, which allows the watch to be wound. Ever heard a watch click as its being wound? That’s the sound of the click impacting each tooth of the ratchet wheel.
Detent Escapement-using a very thin blade spring with a jewel mounted on it, the detent escapement holds the escape wheel in place. Then, a jewel on the balance trips the spring as it passes, which releases the escape wheel so it can advance.
Escape Wheel- the escape wheel is part of the escapement. It interacts with the pallet fork to translate rotational motion into lateral impulses.
Escapement- the escapement manages the release of power from the mainspring in a way that can be regulated by the balance wheel and hairspring. Without the escapement, the watch would unwind in an incontrollable fashion.
Endshake-the amount of vertical motion a pivot has in a jewel-hole. Endshake is necessary for smooth operation of the gear train. Generally, the amount of endshake decreases towards the escapement while it increases on wheels towards the barrel.
Fourth Wheel- in watches with sub-dials that display seconds, the second hand is attached to the extended fourth wheel pivot. It rotates once per minute.
Frequency- the frequency is how many times a balance wheel vibrates per hour. This can be expressed in Hertz (Hz) or in vibrations per hour (vph).

John spent some time searching for what he thought was the perfect example; the chosen car belonged to a lady who trailered the 1969 to a show and then sat in a matching chair next to it all day. Her advice to John was not to drive the car, only trailer it and bask in the glory.

John soon discovered that in order to assemble the 1969 without a paint scratch or mar in the chrome, the builder left everything—tie-rod ends, ball joints, every part that moved—finger tight. This situation came to light after John jumped in the big-block–powered beast and blasted down the street with it shaking like a willow tree and darting uncontrollably from curb to curb.
John’s main desire for owning a 1969 Camaro was to be able to sport drive it as much as possible and exhibit it at local car shows. He got in touch with the Roadster Shop and brought the 1969 in for a chassis swap and to maybe lose the Rat motor in favor of an LS-series engine; and as long as the car was apart it might not be a bad time to repaint it to a more appealing color. The design process began with John sitting down with Chris, the Roadster Shop’s in-house designer, and Jeremy, the shop’s co-owner. John said for the most part he gave the Roadster Shop’s build team carte blanche, with only a few personal demands to be incorporated into the Camaro. The chassis, which is not a word normally associated with a Camaro due to its unit-body construction with subframes front and rear, was tossed in favor of the Roadster Shop’s 1967-1969 Camaro Fast Track chassis. The Fast Track chassis is the result of high-resolution 3-D scanning, allowing CAD-designed framerails that contour tight to the floorpan and provide the rigidity of a full frame configuration. The stock pressed steel subframe rails are cut off and floorpan notched and the Fast Track chassis bolts in place. The 1969’s front suspension is Roadster Shop’s Fast Track IFS based around Corvette C6-style spindles and sprung with Penske Roadster Shop double-adjustable coilover shocks and body roll hindered with a 1-1/4-inch Speedway sway bar. Steering is handled with a Woodward Precision power steering rack-and-pinion valved to Roadster Shop specs and pressurized via a KRC pump mounted on a specially designed serpentine belt system that eliminates the LT1 engine’s need for electric steering. Six-piston 14-inch Baer disc brakes are at each corner. The Roadster Shop rear independent suspension is based around a Strange 9-inch differential, packing 3.90 gears and Wavetrac limited-slip. The tires are Michelin Pilot Super Sport 265/30-19 in front and 335/30-20 in the rear, mounted on Greening Auto Company two-piece billet wheels.
From the floorpan up, the Roadster Shop’s goal was to maintain factory lines, but sharpen the edges. After deciding the rear of the roof should blend into the glass, the rear window proved to be a major engineering feat. Ultimately, it was the help of Bruce White, and his company Piper Plastics, producing a razor-edged acrylic rear window that solved the problem. In addition to forming a new roof panel out of steel, an accentuated cowl hood, nose panel, chin spoiler, and front valance were custom made. The custom grille is cut from aluminum and is flanked by LED headlights.
The final prep and paint was handled in-house at the Roadster Shop, led by Alan Palmer using PPG products start to finish. The colors are McLaren Volcano Yellow accented with satin black. The rear panel of the Camaro features billet aluminum bezels around custom red acrylic lenses, illuminated with one-off LED boards. Underneath the custom-fabricated rear valance and between a pair Borla rectangular stainless steel exhaust tips rests a Volcano Yellow mini belly pan.
Under the hood comes 540 rear-wheel horsepower derived from a stroked Chevrolet Performance LT1 built by Texas Speed & Performance. At just a hair over square at 4.07×4.00 the 376-inch cube original displacement engine reached 416 inches. And as if the extra cubes weren’t enough, the compression using forged Mahle pistons is a high a 12:1 with a custom ground TS&P camshaft and TS&P CNC ported heads under Roadster Shop custom valve covers. The cooling system consists of a C&R Racing aluminum radiator aided with two 14-inch Spal electric fans. A Powermaster alternator keeps pace with electrical demands via an American Autowire wiring harness.
The transmission is a six-speed TREMEC from Bowler Performance Transmission, with special thanks to Mark Bowler for setting up a bellhousing, clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate to work behind the new LT1.
The interior is one of the few areas the Roadster Shop didn’t handle in-house. John’s Camaro was shipped to Avant-Garde Design in Palm City, Florida. Avant-Garde is no misnomer; the company is absolutely leading edge in its league. Over Boom Mat laid by the Roadster Shop, Avant-Garde Design started from the floor up using a composite plastic pan shaped using a CNC router and then installed and covered in late-model GM cloth for carpeting.
The steel center console and steel dashboard with bespoke Dakota Digital gauges were fabricated by the Roadster Shop and upholstered by Avant-Garde. With the exception of the seat tracks the bucket seats were made entirely from scratch using composite plastic to form the buckets and then aircraft-quality, high-density foam was shaped and covered with Garrett leather. Drawn in CAD, Roadster Shop and Avant-Garde design logos were laser engraved into the leather. Avant-Garde installed the MB Quart sound system; the air conditioning system is from Vintage Air. The principals at Avant-Garde Design are Rod Rogers, Jeremy Carlson, and Jeff Gardner.
John’s 1969 Camaro has garnered more than its fair share of attention since its debut at the 2016 SEMA show—the cover of Hot Rod magazine, to name the most notable. It was asked to make sure special thanks went to Henry Young at John York Fabrication and project manager Chad Glasshagel in addition to the folks mentioned here in the text.
Currently the 1969 Camaro is still on the show circuit, but in our phone conversation with John Wilkus on the day this was turned in, he said he’s chomping at the bit to start driving the car.
