Another day another saree from Indian handloom. This saree belongs to my mother which she received from her elder brother i.e. my maternal uncle as a bhai phota gift. It was brought from a handloom shop situated in Tezpur, Assam. The navy blue and gold thread work is one of my favourite combo. I keep on exploring her wardrobe since childhood as she has a plethora of sarees in it. 😊 She is fond of handloom sarees and mostly have a collection of that category. But she basically loves buying sarees from shops and that helps me knowing the quality and genres of sarees by feeling it. Pure Silk is one of her most favourite categories since her young age. I love all her collection and also we are each others saree selection partners. 😎 . . COVID-19: #PreBuyLocal can help small businesses in the time of lockdown

“So in the blink of an eye, sh*t got real,” read the No Nasties newsletter this week. It goes on to tell the reader of how the organic- and Fairtrade-certified clothing brand founded in 2011 is taking a hit, with B2B clients in the travel industry halting orders, their Goa store shut, and online sales dwindling. But, it tells us that though they’re a small business with just six people, “We can continue to pay salaries and meet expenses for a few month.” Unfortunately, it’s “the vegetable guy at the corner, the friendly waiter at my favourite restaurant, our Ayurvedic massage guy and his 2 little kids” who are the worst off.

The solution? #PreBuyLocal, an initiative that founder Apurva Kothari heard of first from Toronto-based FreshBooks, a cloud invoicing and accounting solution for small businesses. The concept involves an extension of credit: paying people before they deliver the goods or services – like paying your local vegetable vendor or personal trainer in the gym a few thousand rupees for future purchases.

Taking the cue, Apurva felt he had much to be grateful for himself. “I have a home and no matter what, I’ll have food on the table, between family and friends,” he says. So despite the stress and anxiety of almost no business right now, he says he put things in perspective for himself. “There are those that don’t have that kind of savings — they must be so petrified.” He has prepaid his masseur who has two children to support and cannot go back to his home state of Kerala.

So if you have a favourite local brand that may not be able to pay employees, offer help for future goods or services. Torani, for instance, has put out an appeal to help their almost-two-year-old brand, so they can pay their embroiderers, tailors, finishers, and even their chaiwala. You could also consider booking clothes or accessories to be delivered once business resumes (pay by card so they receive the money rather than doing a COD), or even asking your favourite restaurant if you can preorder a meal to be redeemed later, much like a gift card works. Last Forest that connects communities with customers, has sent out an email to their subscribers, detailing the process of buying a gift card.

Sonica Sarna works with 40 artisan communities to produce Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified textiles for international markets. She supported the No Nasties initiative on Instagram. “My business model involves extending a 50% advance to the artisans anyway, otherwise they won’t be able to deliver, so this is a natural extension,” she says, adding that many don’t have savings.

As sustainable clothing brand Upasana in Auroville, who were also inspired by No Nasties to put out the #PreBuyLocal message, said across a few Instagram posts: it’s also about collective healing, community and connection.

I had always bought #saris from market. The reason was that I had enough time to visit markets and could find any kind of #saree available in the market. Unlike metropolitan cities it is easier to visit and stroll in the market in smaller cities. Almost everyday after school (when I was working as an educator) I with my colleagues cum friends used to visit the market either to have our evening meal or to shop cosmetics or clothing or just to hop. I had enough time in the evening to shop, eat and then gyming. I believe every human life should be like this. Working late till 7-8 means you start your own day at night and then end up having late dinner or nothing at all as not everyone is blessed with someone who could prepare there meal. Anyway, I was about to say that this Chanderi Silk saree is the first one that I bought online from 😊 @admyrin . That was the time I got confident to buy saris online. Perhaps the last one to post a pic on NATIONAL HANDLOOM DAY 😁 Well, I was waiting the whole day for my photographer husband to get ready to click some pics. WFH is harder as meetings keep you seated in one place almost for the whole day with the earphones attached on. The one hour in between goes away like 10 mins. So, without disturbing my man and with some patience I waited till the dusk and finally got some shots. 😉 . . I picked up this Cotton Khadi saree from Shonajhuri Haat (market) in Shantiniketan, Bolpur. The earrings are also from the same place and had also picked up many more stuffs from there. It is of course a must visit place in Bolpur. The neck piece and the pink cloth bangal are also from Bolpur but from Nabanna Exhibition where all kinds of handicraft things were displayed in the stalls and the blouse is from everyday market. The #gotapatti bangles are from @rajasthanirangrez . . I missed a few days in uploading pictures for the 21days journey so it's my 15th pic now. I enjoyed the thrill of getting ready and post pictures in the midst of a busy life. Life became to dull after the pandemic and #21days21sarees challenge brought life. Ok now back to the saree. This yellow Chiffon Saree with silver and yellow thread work is again a gift from my mom. I love the colour yellow but if I go back to my school or high school days I cannot find any pic in yellow dress. Perhaps, I had the wrong notion that this colour won't suit me. I clearly remember that I had started wearing yellow when my mom bought a sleeveless cotton yellow kurti for me from Kolkata. I liked it but wore it with hesitation and was surprised to see myself in front of the mirror. Thus, I fell for yellow. Now, I have a lot of yellow sarees and other attires. Every woman's wardrobe loves to have a red saree in it. I have quite a few in my wardrobe. When it comes to saree I can't trust anyone else then my mother. She won't stop hopping from one shop to the other until she gets her hand to the best one. This simple Orange Cotton Printed Saree is again a gift from her. Cotton sarees are perfect wear for everyday purposes. I have a dozen of them and I got them all as gifts. Ain't I lucky? 😉 Anyway, did you notice the surrounding in the picture and me walking bare footed. This is the Paradise for me! Well, this is my in-laws place where the house is surrounded by trees and various kinds of plants and where I can feel the grass and the earth. A peaceful place away from the hustle and bustle of the cities. A place where one can relax and rejuvenate. It's not all about the house but also about the society where everyone passes a smile and never let you feel lonely. A place where I get up and go out to see the tailor birds chirping in and out their nest, the flowers blooming bright and the veggies look so fresh in the plants. This was the same feeling when I used to visit my maternal grandma's home. I feel like I got back the same life again. Life is different their. I love Delhi but I enjoy living their too. Two different places with two different lifestyle. Perhaps, I believe the village lifestyle is healthier than those living in metropolitan city. . . Mekhela Chadar (traditionally prounced as Sador) is Assam's traditional attire. With 18 different major tribes the design, names and way wearing the attire changes. This attire specifically belongs to the Hajong Tribe. The striped Mekhela is known as Pathin. Traditionally, Pathin is wraped from the bust till the calf of the leg and the upper part is covered by a Parsa or Argon. Most of the tribal attire are worn in this way and the most important part is that these are all hand woven and they themself weave it in their home. Those who do not belong to any particular tribe wear all these beautiful attire as Mekhela Chadar. Ok, now there is another thing that I should not leave is that the stripes too has got their names. The red stripes are called as #kan and the thick borders are called #chapa . I bought this pair from a store in Golaghat, Assam. But I do not have the traditional upper part #parsa or #argon which is traditionally taken as a shawl. I hope to get that too very soon. I have paired them with silver Afghan ornaments to match their kind of ornaments which are basically of silver metal. 😊 . . I never ever thought of wearing a #ranicolour or anything before this beautiful saree came to me as a gift. I was confused if I should wear this one or not but definitely not thought of discarding as it was a special gift to me by my brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Now, why was I confused to wear this beautiful 9 yard? Because I have brown complexion I was/am always conscious of wearing certain colours. One them was "rani" colour but I had always admired this colour as it brightens up the skin tone. A few suggested not to wear while a few suggested to go for it. I went with the few and searched for the blouse pieces that my mother never made. I found this indigo blue blouse piece and told the tailor to take out the design from it's original blouse piece which was in shiny golden colour and prepare the blouse. While strolling in Lajpat Nagar I found a beautiful rani colour earrings which I picked up at 200 bucks and the blue neck piece was a pick up from a Pakistani store in an international trade fair with which I could not find a perfect matching dress and I also needed a Pink or Fushia lipstick so for that #nykaacosmetics was the only spot and then I found a #lakmeabsolute #organoil #pinklipstick . So, I wanted everything new to wear coz it was #durgapujo time and I had everything new from head to toe. My new #sandals were from #bata . With all these collections I managed to look beautiful in this gorgeous georgette #embrodroid saree. This saree broke the stereotype dress colour selection for a #brownskingirls . It's all upto how we carry ourselves. There are a few colour that may not suit us but when it's a gift I try to adore it with the utmost care.
