TEATRO CASTRO ALVES SALVADOR • BAHIA • BRASIL Opened in 1967, in Salvador, the Castro Alves Theater was designed by José Bina Fonyat Filho and Humberto Lemos Lopes, located in the Campo Grande district – one of the city’s most important cultural centers. The complex currently encompasses the Main Hall, Choir Room, the Acoustic Shell, the Foyer, the Technical Center, the Span, the Suspended Garden, and the Theater Cafe, in addition to management and rehearsal rooms. Listed as a Brazilian cultural heritage site by the Artistic and Historical Heritage Institute (IPHAN), the Theater was the stage of very important presentations, such as the performance of Brazilian musicians Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, shortly before they left for exile in England, in the 1970s. The Theater has three ongoing projects: the Bahia Symphony Orchestra, the Castro Alves Theater Ballet, and the Bahia State Youth Orchestra Cores.
