Square Introversion - Representation of an urban identity

Urban Interior: Inhabited Ceiling

Putting forward the idea of self-organisation, the unit collectively chose the urban situation as a study site for questioning the end of the city as an outdoor condition. The vertically layered and interlinked fabric of Hong Kong emerged from an iterative four-city study of varied forms of tendencies towards the ‘introverted city’. 

The unit’s successive scalar inversion and specific notation of cities, buildings and spaces illustrated the unobstructed growth of policed and controlled architectural interiorities, expanding beyond a perceivable form as a network of enlarged characterless entities. Challenging traditional street and societal models, student groups argued their findings over several study workshops, alternative networks of interiorised public spaces in Bangkok, Toronto and Istanbul. This was complemented by a parallel study of iconic London and Paris spaces defined by their ceiling – the typology of reference for this year’s investigation of the urban interior. The unit’s systematic approaches and representative tools iteratively constituted the grammars 

of form and experience of individual students. Beginning with the parametric potential of classical models as associative designs to include the layered abstraction of urban precedents, the ceiling as a nominal architectural form exposed its transformational character. From the understanding of interiority of simple and monumental ceilings to urban precedents, hybrid conditions were revealed through a vocabulary of distinct experiences. 

Individual interventions challenged the engineered efficiency that engulfs Hong Kong’s urban form, work and leisure activities. In lieu of the common and expected top-down approach to the rhizome city, proposals focused on experiential growth. The augmented ceilings, as transformed and transformative types of architectural artefacts, suggest the civic through plays on materiality and architectonics. Offering new forms of qualitative densities, the inhabited ceiling defines novel urban situations.

 The project is about how to achieve tailored speculation which maintains Vietnam's social and cultural aspect, providing different types of public space that is suitable in the context of Ho Chi Minh city in Vietnam using prefabricated component system. The Genesis of Energy Clouds

This project is investigation into the formation of energy sustainable city by converting abandoned neglected natural resources into regenerative energy sources.

Basically, London is one of the fastest urban areas energy demand is enormous. That I found interesting thing is London is filled with marshes for flood mitigation theses marshes have a great potential to harvest energy. So, my new system is to construct habitable area for people harvest wasted energy resources from marshes to regenerate it.

That I found really interesting thing is that London is filled with marshes. They are flood mitigation for London. However, they also have a problem. Marshes main producer of Methane gas which is 21 times severer effect of global warming.

The objective is to establish energy structure for new city on marshes. Moreover, this project is alleviating negative effect of greenhouse gas emit from marshes by converting it as a natural energy capitalizing positive value, which means utilizing methane as a natural energy resources. As a result, this project is establishing energy sustainable city on marshes.

 This is about tapping into untapped resource of the greenhouse gas released we can harvest and we can use for energy so we will also stop the effect of greenhouse gases.

 Therefore, greenhouse gas is regenerated as a new opportunity for creating new space on marshes and energy supplier for people in London.

Whitechapel is home to many institutions and has experienced a lot of investment in recent years. As a response against the privatised commodity-led development, the project questions if there is an opportunity to capitalise upon the existing investment in the area to create a new collaborations between the institutions through the fragmentation of the Idea Store - a Tower Hamlets initiative to encourage lifelong learning and urban revitalisation. The Idea Store is fragmented into a territorial network of services physically manifested as random insertions into the city. The services are co-located within existing institutions or physically manifested through appropriating inactive spaces. Each insertion is operated by an existing active third party on site, is the product of collaboration between third party stakeholders and follows a unique investment model.  Ultimately the insertions aim to transform the social agenda of the Idea Store into civic space and to be catalysts for investment and exchange.

Owl Hunt

New Finnish environment gradually takes over the Toppila area in Oulu, preserving the elements of Aalto's factory, which are from hosts becoming participants in this artificial natural environment. People, as bird watchers, are just visitors who are taking care of new inhabitants, Lapland Owls. They gather in and inhabit the overground structure while searching for their prey, voles, creatures the are gathered in the underground network of tunnels.
