SBS Hyena, episode 1 rewatch (part 3)

Today we will look at cute watch ads, the storm before the actual storm and bonus Yoon Hee-jae being expensive.

Hwang Bo-ra is so wonderful in everything she does. Sim Yu-mi has a great sense of style and an equally loud personality, but she feels quite personable. This means she’s quick to make friends and pull them in, which is what puts Jung Geum-ja in Yoon Hee-jae’s circle.

Kindly note her single earring, the contrast of her aqua blazer, her neon pink nails and her lip. Let's put a pin in that comment by her.

(I live for Hee-jae saying he's expensive. I'm sure you are, babe.)

On any other show, their age difference would have been played for hijinks, laughs or a plot point. Ga Gi-hyeok as the bestie might have told his friend he could do much better (untrue). Boo Hyeon-a might have had an entire jealousy arc with her (you know they would have done that.)

Not on this show. This is the first and the last time a named character says anything on the topic. It’s a sometimes grating comic character who makes the comment, which would have been a sneaky way to slide in something mean or judgmental. But there's none of that here. It’s super refreshing. 

And then, total obliteration: 

Kim Hee-sun is luminous, sexy as hell and completely in control. Yoon Hee-jae may have upped the stakes here by turning up and dropping that outrageous line about leaving with him, but Kim Hee-sun does the metaphorical equivalent of cuffing his chin, smirking and saying "Let me show you how it's done, dear boy." Of course he leaves like he's been lassoed.

Ju Ji-hoon is never going to look like this in a show, ever again. I feel like the costuming team sat down with the PD and went, listen, we have an actor-model in the house. Let us at him. Let us put him in gorgeous suits and saturated colours and lots of great lighting.

This is presumably the Gran Bleu, which is where they met twice more, and...the lighting is not like this on those occasions. Here it's cosy, with lots of warmth on their faces, but there are also plenty of shadows. Almost as if to say that romantic lighting also tends to conceal a lot. 

The last time they do meet here, the lights are up, because the show's over, and the things they say and do are so achingly loving that you won't need any romantic pap. Substance over form. 

This entire sequence plays out like a generic, if extremely posh, romance. Form, rather than substance: two beautiful people listening to the same record, cooking in the kitchen, looking at art dressed like they should be in fashion magazines - culminating in this gorgeous windswept kiss with the sun setting and the mountains behind them. HIGH ROMANCE, or rather, what we think high romance should look like.

I say “generic”, because this could be any couple. There is nothing here that is specifically them. It’s stock architecture over the heart of things that Hee-jae loves, but there is nothing else of him, and absolutely nothing of her. Even that kiss on the rooftop is made to look exactly like those ubiquitous East Asian watch commercials with the blurry slow-motion - and it is, because it’s very smart PPL, I’m certain - but it enhances, rather than detracts from the generic quality of this sequence. 

Anyway, the ad film’s coming to an end because…it’s courtroom time. DUN DUN DUN.

Okay folks, so yes. It’s been an eternity. But I was waiting for Better Call Saul to be over so I didn’t see any tumblr spoilers bc I have to see what happens to my wife, Kim, with mine own eyes. Secondly, the idea for this came from a convo in our Narcos fanfic writer’s discord join us there’s lots of gifs of hot ppl and fanfic and frantic fanfic about what the lady versions of the Narcos dudes would be like and in describing the qualities of girl Moncito (loyal ASF, confident, passionate, hot tempered, bit of a loose canon, outrageous style and makeup) we collectively realized Girl Mon is Maddy Pérez. So ofc, I was like “now kiss” and that’s basically this video.

Lastly, the mental image of Ramon literally shooting Nate in the face was not at all a thing I daydreamed about nor delighted in whilst making this look I never claimed to be a pacifist or a role model.

A kpop group/soloist you will NEVER support no matter how good their songs are

......... I feel like some ppl may have things to say to me when I say this group, but GFRIEND. This is a recent development for me, I was a fan of them up until I found out about this.

In February, 2021 a member posted a picture posing and looking all lovingly at a Nazi statue in a museum (they claim that they didn't know it was a Nazi, when the clothing is VERY clearly a Nazi uniform) and when the post was taken down, the reason originally was not, "this may have been incredibly insensitive to do, I’m sorry," instead the reason was "I didn't want fans to be jealous!" 🤦🏻‍♀️ The company (not even the member who did it 🙄) only took action to apologize for this photo AFTER fans were outraged over it. NOT bc they realized how incredibly insensitive this is not only to Jews but to Germans and Europeans in general. Nazis and the Holocaust is NOT something to joke about or take lightly. 6 million ppl lost their lives bc ONE man didn't think they were "ideal"

This isn't something I usually like to share, bc I have actually lost friends over it, but I am Jewish and this greatly bothers me. There have been other instances where GFRIEND has referred to another member as "KITLER" (Kim Hitler) live on vlive and they laughed about it. Another member casually refers to the Holocaust in the lyrics of a song, like it's no big deal. Even if the members came out and apologized for the photo themselves and all the instances where they joke about it, I still wouldn’t be able to forgive them. You just never joke about something like the Holocaust.

So yeah, a group I can never support is GFRIEND.

Very messy thoughts about a very messy kdrama: Melting Me Softly

Overall:

I loved the premise...it looked like the kind of ridiculous over the top kdrama that could make for an interesting entertaining watch...unfortunately it is just badly executed. It doesn't know what it wants to be. The action syfy part is confusing, there is no emotional weigh over the tragedy of losing 20 years of life on the part of the Male Lead, although we feel it with the FL(who, by the way, is the only good part of the drama as far as acting goes, despite having little to work with), and even the jokes don't land because the supposed funny side characters are either too annoying and terrible people or they are too pathetic and I pity them instead of finding any of it funny (like the scenes with his family).

Melting me softly is a mess. Honestly with only just how all over the place the pilot was most ppl would have drop it then, but ji chang wook is soooo pretty and it's his comeback after military, still.... lord, is the drama bad. 

The syfy element is a mess, the characters are all shallow and unlikable in the few scenes we had with them so far (except the FL who seems nice enough but hasn't had that much to do yet).

The Characters:

 JCW is surprisingly unlikable for me and it's not even that he's the cliche jerk. Surprisingly it’s even worse because he’s just boring as a character. He’s not nice, but he doesn’t go out of his way to be cruel so that he can be redeemable later.

Nope, he’s just arrogant and entitled and he interacts with everyone mostly by casting judgmental side eye and being kind of uninterested in anyone else. Not in a charming megalo centric  way (like the Lead from What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim, who was a good person despite his ego), but in a dismissive everyday style that makes him all the more unlikable. What’s worse is that it’s even more evident with his family, who are problematic and a bit clingly and “golddigging/leaching” but still they seem to like each other enough in their own weird way. The lead though, treats his family coldly, like a disgusted spectator and it’s hard to watch. There is no chemistry between him and the rest of the cast because the character treats everyone like they’re not worthy of his respect.

That scene where the leads meet and she’s upset over losing 20 years of her life? -  I automatically went: *eyeroll Ugh, Men... It's not all about you everytime. You convinced her, effed up her life, own it and stop making excuses! The right thing to do is apologize and shut the f up!

The side characters, as I said are all either pathetic or terrible people, with the exception of the female lead’s family, who seem to be in a different, better acted drama. The shift in tone is jarring.

The Plot:

The plot is a complete mess and the main conflict so far is stupid. His producing team (that ended up convincing his gf) decided to hush things up in the past because outrage, audience ratings, yada yada and that's it! Yet it’s super confusing bc it seems like they are hiding what they did from him and scheming behind his back, while at the same time it's obvious he knows they threw him under the bus back them, so where’s the conflict? Also it's petty and the real villains involved with the cryoproject and the attack on the scientist are still just a vague concept that the drama clearly wont go into anytime soon, so it all seems like filler. 

To top it all, last episode's cliffhanger is about their previous romantic interests (who are now in their 40s) reconnecting when one of them is married and the other cover up the ML's disappearance, so it's all just more annoying filler I have no interest in watching...

The production design/ technical aspects:

The technical aspects are also bad, especially the editing...scenes are chopped off and put together and seem cut short or pointless. Time is also weird, they mix office scenes with home scenes from ML and random FL scenes without parallels and it's impossible to make out when the days start and end. It's been a while since I saw such messy execution from the production. Usually it's stuff like plot or characters or acting that bothers me, at most camera work, but here it really is the production as a whole. 

What I meant by parallels is that when you are starting to tell a narrative with two leads from their separate povs before they are onscreen together, there's usually an editing order:

Both leads wake up, both leads wander away. Ok so far. Both leads reconnect with family. Scene of FL at home with family followed by scene with ML with family. New day starts. Day 1: looking for answers: contacting the police, talking to the last ppl involved in the experience, etc. Sequencial scenes showing how each go about finding answers in their own way (the method helps to start establishing character and  personality differences between the leads). ML does that, but for some reason the FL doesn't?  (Maybe here a nightime scene each with the family to further develop feelings/angst and exposition of changes in family dinamics and events that happened while they were gone.) Next is trying to get back the life they left behind. Again, sequencial scenes of his workplace and in this case her university.

And with that we get the feeling a few days have passed and they went around on their parallel journeys. But here it's all jumbled and mashed together. He keeps talking to the people from his network in random chopped talks where it feels like he doesn't ask everything logically just so the drama can have another different scene with them later, he is home, his family is a mess but that isn't even edited in contrast to the scenes of her family for juxtaposition...and he seems to have more scenes than her and hers fall randomly out of nowhere and without logic. After being discharged from the hospital and talking to her family, why wouldn't her first reaction be trying to find him and ask what the hell happened? Instead she goes around, even returns to college before going to him?  The drama and the leads seem to walk around in circles without purpose. The transitions are also lowsy...usually all the driving in kdramas is too much but here it is lacking. The ML jumping around from the hospital, to the network, to the (most baffling) secret patient room where the scientist is without us knowing how he got there is distracting. Besides, those small driving scenes are important for character interaction and development: either with phone calls that allow us to see a more intimate side of the characters, how he takes things when nobody is watching, or with another person in the car communicating, or even just silent rides with body language and expression giving us a glimpse of their state of mind....  without any of this, by just appearing in places and doing things, the characters seem shallow and incomplete.

Minor complaints: 

They made the choice to make the 2nd Female lead kind of bitchy, greedy and backstabbing by having her agree to the cover up and her decision of not telling him immediately  what she had done now and apologize (when her younger self seemed much sweeter than that). I feel like the drama has barely begun and they already did her dirty by choosing to go that way with her character after her introduction on the pilot. Also, typecast of the actress playing her older self... she always plays a bitch (she's very good at it but I wanted to see her on a softer role). I wouldn’t mind  if this were a noona romance, since so far the leads have zero chemistry together. To be fair, there wasn’t any with the 2nd female lead, or JCW and any other character in a non romatic way either, in fact, except for the kid niece who actually seems to get a genuine reaction out of him.

 Plus we know from K2 that JCW and noonas have better chemistry ;)

At least I wish they had given her a better arc, for example, the girlfriend who was left behind, because of how it went down, never got over her love for him. They could have a romantic interest for her who she met after the lead was frozen, and the two had become very close over the years but she couldn't move on... they could give her closure so she'd finally realize in her heart how she felt about her own romantic interest without it being clouded with guilt and unresolved feelings for the lead.

everytime you misread an assignment just look at the met gala photos. look at the suits, ill fitted dresses, solid colors, and bow ties that have been done up by brand names and shiny accessories. then think to yourself "wow, im not so bad after all".

but seriously you have so many excited fans, all that press, and anticipation. then you show up in an outfit i could've put together at macys for 0.01% of your ticket's price. i don't understand how you could show up in a black and white tux, a plain dress, etc. maybe you don't want to be roasted on twitter or something? but tbh, even the most outragous outfits, like kim petras' or dan levy's outfits, were better than all the plain play-it-safe outfits.

because, even disregarding theme concept (they both did follow the theme but this argument isn't really abt them so let's move on), half the point of the met gala is to dress extravagently, sometimes even obnoxiously. even if it's not conventionally pretty (again, like dan levy's outfit) that's not the point.

the point is to be audacious and bold. for your outfit to connect the specific theme to the audience. and plain outfits just don't do that. especially when we all know most of y'all could buy out a corner store if you wanted to.

tldr: why are rich ppl going to the met gala in basic outfits when they could afford better ones that actually convey the specified theme. and as much as i despise my country america's fashion and history (the whole subject of the 2021 met gala) can't be shown with black and white suits and solid colored dresses. brand names and shiny metals don't do shit when you look like you just walked out of my 8th grade graduation party.

i do not want to start this by saying “not to be all deep about the met gala” but not to be all deep about the met gala where most rich people fail to meet an assignment year after year even with a lot of notice and all the wealth and resources at their disposal, but the thing that gets me is really that when it comes down to it, themed parties like these give so much room for art and expression and i’ve seen so many inventive costumes and outfits on halloween and at costume parties i’ve been to, from little kids and teenagers and college students and adults who definitely don’t have a net worth over millions of dollars. and to see these incredibly rich people not even make an effort is just so disappointing and a little infuriating because with all that money god knows i wouldn’t show up in a plain black tux or a plain prom dress. what are you all doing and give me all your money.

“Is that even a real Chef?” You chuckled.

“Hey wait-” You weren’t even able to finish your sentence before your friend hung up on you and left you completely helpless. You looked back up at the large wall filled with random powders that you had no you if you would need or not.

“Hello miss I’m sorry but can I?” A tall handsome broad shouldered man asked pointing to the wall behind you signalling that he needed to get an item off the shelf that you were blocking. You jumped a little and quickly moved out of his way.

“Oh I’m so sorry!”

“Don’t worry about it.” He chuckled and gave you a sweet smile. You returned the gesture but soon went back to looking glumly at the spices.

“Everything alright miss?”

You sighed and didn’t even look at him but shook your head side to side. “Not really, do you happen to know what spices would be good to season chicken with? I’m having a dinner tonight and I’m totally at loss.”

He laughed before reaching over your shoulder and grabbing a few bottles that stood right in your face and handed them to you. “I think this should to it.” He smiled.

You sighed and looked up at him with wide eyes. He was a gift sent from heaven.

“Thank you so much,” You took the bottles and placed them in your basket. “I’m Kate, I really appreciate the help.”

“No problem Kate, I hope to see you again.” He winked and turned on his heel to walk away.

Ironically, he was the son of the family that was coming over for dinner.

the two of you usually had lunch together after class, anyway??????? he didn't even need to ask???????

he sighs, realizing you're never going to understand him bc he's too vague and ashamed to repeat his monologue to you "a proper lunch.......... a d-date???????"

he hides himself again, in fear of rejection, but you take both of his hands to hold it in yours to reassure him

"maybe?" you playfully reply, giggling as you did so

but that's all the answer he needs before he's got the biggest grin on his face as he intertwines his fingers with yours

Yh my friend says she doesn't like girl groups because she says that they're less funny then boy groups? Like they're more reserved and even though some are dorky not majorly funny/outrageous/dorky like bits for example? It doesn't make sense why ppl hate on them for no reason

There are plenty of hilarious girl groups???? Sonamoo, Brown Eyed Girls, SNSD and others are hilarious, you just have to look for it? For example, those ‘reality’ shows where they go into the idol dorms and like wake them up to do tasks??? Those can be really hilarious
