Tuesday 5th November 2024
The Stuart Highway is the major route from north to south, from Darwin in the Northern Territories right down to Port Augusta in Southern Australia. To compare it to the M25 would be far from accurate. For such an important road, 2720kms of it, there's little traffic on it by UK standards. By far the heaviest use comes from the mighty road trains that thunder back and forth top to bottom of this vast country. These things take no prisoners; they will not stop for animals on the highway or pretty much anything else come to think of it. They can be over 50 meters long with 3 or 4 sections, sometimes 60m. Big vehicles. And so it was as we ventured back up the Stuart Highway again this morning we ploughed up an empty road passing the occasional road train. We were off to Edith Falls, a mere 150km round trip. Edith Falls, now known as Leliyn, was originally named after the daughter of a Police Commissioner in the 1900s. And I don't believe Edith Falls in the water, off the bridge or over the cliff. We were equally careful not to emulate this either as we set off from the car park on a 'loop walk' of 2.7kms. Not far, I hear you protest, but as we embarked, it was 38 degrees, and the walk is described as medium to difficult; rocks to climb on an uphill trajectory. Plenty in the rucksack to drink and big hats, we set off. The expedition worthy of a Duke of Edinburgh award winds clockwise around three pools: a lower pool, a middle pool, and an upper pool. This is a major attraction yet we met virtually no-one on route. Beautiful pools hidden from view and fed by waterfalls from above which despite technically still in the dry season, the Falls were running still. At a couple of vantage points, our efforts were rewarded by fantastic views that went on and on. This was indeed a gorgeous location; so peaceful and tranquil. The lowest pool was for bathers, but there were none there, and the clear waters showcased an entire spectrum of pond life. Miraculously, not only did the Nitmiluk National Park provide a cafe where it was needed, but it was actually open! As we supped a coffee, tranquility was entirely shattered by 2 coach loads of German tourists as they disgorged and noisily elbowed their way down to the plunge pool brandishing their national emblem aloft, the beach towel.
A really good day out, and we'll worth the distance travelled. We envied the couple running the cafe. They were standing in for the usual team, and had travelled up from Bunbury in WA to live and work there for a couple of weeks. We could do that!
Back to Katherine and the bottle shop. Usual scrutiny of ID to make sure we weren't on the naughty boys list and away we came with the SB for the customary sunset ceremony. This ban of sale of alcohol to those on the list is state wide across the Northern Territories.
ps. Despite the heat, vindaloo with left over rubbery chicken. Jacobs Creek SB. Tim Tams later on as we watched George Gently.

What if there a game was where the character ended up in hell by mistake where they make friends with a giant long-legged owl with a crown on its head who goes by Stolas as they have to fight the 7 deadly sins in order to get home because one of them stole his book. The demons give Stolas a hard time about being friendly to humans. The character can ride Stolas for transportation and help them fight other demons. The character's weapon is a sword, shield and a chain whip which is used for strangling demons. By the end of the game the character wanted Stolas to come with them to the living world because it's better up there but Stolas wanted to stay because it's his home as they ended up hugging. The character returns to the living world they end up sending the occultists to hell where they get chased by hellhounds. This has nothing to do with Helluva Boss. The relationship between Stolas and the character is platonic.

Huh, well this seems like a cool concept, reminds me of a bit of the last guardian/ Cereza and the Lost Demon. Both games very reliant on your animal companion to assist you and all. Very interesting arsenal as well. I could see myself at least seeing what's up if it wa real.

Letters To My Lover
Daminette December Day 2 - Letters/Penpals @maribat-calendar-events
They were to be given their assignments today, and Marinette just couldn’t wait to find out who her American Penpal would be. The school had first made the announcement of the French-American pen pal project around two weeks ago and she had signed up as soon as possible. It was super easy. All she’d had to do was fill out her personal details, hobbies and interests, along with any and all methods of contact they were willing to share. Marinette had offered up her phone number, email address, Instagram username and Discord user.
People had been called to the front randomly in order to receive their matches. Quite a few of Marinette’s friends had already gotten theirs. Alya was partnered with a girl called Issa. Adrien with Tori. Rose with Jon. Nathaniel with Leenie. Chloé with Martina. Kim with James.
“Marinette you will be with Damian. You will find the information you need on his application.”
“Thanks.”
Marinette quickly read through his application and picked out the key bits of information.
His name was Damian Wayne. He loved animals. He was from a very big family. He could be contacted through his number or his email address.
She grinned. She couldn’t wait to get to know this Damian Wayne.

Marinette had typed Damian’s number into her phone but she was nervous to contact him; he was saved as ‘Damian PP’ (much to Adrien’s amusement). She cautiously typed out her first message to him.

A month passed very quickly. Soon Marinette and Damian were talking to each other for at least two hours every single day. The two of them had become very close and neither of them would change it for the world. Talking to Damian was one of the best parts of Marinette’s day, especially with Lila in her class spewing her bullshit. During lunch and after school she couldn’t wait to get her phone and to message Damian. And once it got later she could call him too, as he would be out of school by then. Video calling him was her favourite thing. That way she got to hear his voice, she could see his face and see any of his pets if they were around.
Recently, he had even joined her and her family’s game night. She had simply been on a voice call with Damian when her mother came to ask about a game night before seeing that she was on a call and asking Damian if he wanted to join virtually. That had been a very fun night.
Aside from Chat Noir (of course there was Kagami and Luka too but she was closer to Chat), Marinette thought that he might be one of her closest friends. She spent more time talking to Damian than she did with most of her classmates due to Lila’s influence on them, and she felt like she could tell him anything. Well, almost anything, she couldn’t tell him about the miraculous but that was fair enough - everything else was fair game.
And maybe, if she was being honest, not that she would admit it to anyone, Marinette may have gained a slight crush on Damian. It didn’t really matter considering she’d never met him, not to her brain. Her brain thought about Damian and just decided to turn into butterflies. Thankfully, unlike her old crush on Adrien she could still talk to Damian. However, that was probably because they had been friends before she had gained a crush on him, so she was comfortable around him.

Miss Bustier grinned up from the bottom of the classroom. “I have some very exciting news,” she exclaimed. “Your penpals are coming to visit Paris.”
“Wicked,” shouted Alix from the right hand side of the classroom. “When?”
Marinette rolled her eyes, “Now. Their flights landed around eight thirty yesterday night, and they will be arriving after lunch in order to get some sleep, according to the teacher, because they aren’t used to Parisian time.”
“How do you know that, Marinette?” Miss Bustier asked.
“How do I know that?” She asked sarcastically. “Maybe because my penpal actually talks to me and informed me that we would be meeting as soon as he found out the news.”
“Oh, right.”

For once Marinette made sure that she would be back from lunch on time. She didn't want to be late to meet Damian. And by on time she meant just as the bell rang to signal the end of lunch. She raced to Miss Bustier’s classroom. she had to get there before Damian.
She had to.
She didn’t get there before Damian. The little shit had apparently gotten to the school like five minutes before lunch ended and had immediately gone to the classroom in order to ‘make a good first impression’. It was kind of adorable how much he tried to make good impressions. It was one of the main things she liked about him.
“Damian?” She asked carefully as she fought the urge to run up to him and give him a hug. “Is it really you?”
“Of course it is, Habibti.”
“It’s great to finally meet you,” Marinette cried out excitedly.
“I must agree.”
“Can I give you a hug?” She asked nervously. She knew that Damian didn’t like many people touching him so she wanted to check whether it was okay first.
“That is acceptable,” he responded before awkwardly putting his own arms around her, before she had the chance to do it first.
This was nice. This was very nice.
Marinette very much enjoyed spending time with Damian via technology, but in person it was even better.
This was brilliant. This was amazing. This was perfect. This was … this was better than she could have possibly imagined.
He meant so much to her, and he was there. He was there in person for the first time and it was perfect.
Marinette was just happy to have his arms around her.
Of course Chloé then had to come up and ruin it. “That’s ridiculous, utterly ridiculous. We don’t need you and your boyfriend to be all over each other as we’re coming into class, Dupain-Cheng.”
“He’s not my boyfriend,” squawked Marinette.
“I could be,” Damian offered, “if that’s what you wanted.”
Her heart leap, “Really?”
“If that is what you desire,” he admitted, “I believe that I have had feelings for you for a bit.”
“I would love to be your girlfriend,” she said with a red face. “I have had feelings for you for a while too.”
“May I please kiss you, Habibti?”
She nodded, “You may.”
He leaned down and their lips joined for the first, and certainly not the last, time.
There they were. Marinette and Damian. Damian and Marinette. Together at last, in more than one sense of the word.

This episode is about one shots and other stuff
For those unfamiliar with the term one shot, it refers to a type of release that's only one chapter in length, length here being anywhere from as little as 5 to even 50+ pages, some serving as pilots for serialization hopefuls and others meant simply to be serve as one off self contained stories… one shots

sports manga, and I have to say, though I am a big fan of the sport, as in playing it, I don't think not being a fan of, or not knowing anything about PP/TT or any sport for that matter will affect how you feel about this or any sports manga

idk what else they would have called it tbh but this manga is about the quest of astronomers back in the day, to prove the earth moved, specifically that it orbited the sun, and the persecution they faced from the Catholic church in doing so

Are donkeys sacred to Athirat? I've come across this claim a lot but nobody who says it provides any sources. There's a carving of her holding plants of some sort and has animals on either side tho it's hard to tell what they are but imo they look like goats. I'd also be interested in your thoughts on this carving in general as it gives a very different view of her from the Ugaritic texts (which you prefer).
This pyxis lid, which is what I assume the ask is about, is not Athirat. It's far from certain if it depicts any deity at all. It's a one of a kind example of an Ugaritic ivory imitation of Aegean items and so far the only things which can be said about it for sure is that it was regarded as a luxury good based on the material and context. Anyone who labels it as a specific goddess is not be trusted as a source, simply put. And the animals are definitely goats, not donkeys. Donkeys don't have beards. See here for details. It sure does look like some sort of “potnia theron” but that’s not exactly helpful on its own. As for the donkey issue: Athirat certainly rides on a donkey at one point in the Baal cycle. The animal is evidently described as an ordinary beast of burden, with her servant Qodesh-wa-Amrur (he's seemingly a fisherman deity) taking care of it when she doesn't need it for travel. There is no indication the animal a symbol of her specifically (though she does appear to be the only deity in the Ugaritic text corpus to travel this way), and it's more likely the entire passage simply evokes the imagery associated with traveling monarchs in the region (source, pp. 66-68). This association certainly fits with her broader association with royalty in Ugarit, which is discussed elsewhere in the same source. To my knowledge the donkey association does not surface anywhere else.
