From @powerhousenurses - 🎓✨💕 @soniyamperry - "Never be ashamed of what you went through, God will use your story for His glory" Three years ago I was 19, broken, hurt, and lost. I became a single parent and had 9 months to figure out what to do with my life. I was left alone with a baby and had every intent in me to not go back to school the following semester. How can I raise a son? What can I teach him? How can I do it alone? I just knew that I wouldn't be able to do this and go to school at the same time. God definitely saw different, and it wasn't until I started to pray for peace, I started to pray for strength, and I started to pray for guidance that He showed me all that I CAN do opposed to what I can't. It was nothing but the grace of God that brought me all the way to this season. Working 2 jobs at a time to afford bills, daycare, and school. Staying up late at night to study so I could pass every validation, exam, and final. Even having countless number of breakdowns and tears because I honestly thought I was in over my head. Through it all, I've been so blessed to have joined the greatest sorority, remain on academic scholarship, and graduate from one of the best nursing schools. I feel so blessed to have made it this far. It's ONLY up from here!!! If anything, I just want to make my son proud. One day he will look back and can truly say, "Mommy did it". I want my testimony to inspire someone else. Even at a young age of 22, and all that I've been through, I was able to do more than I ever thought I could. God really does love me and Kole. With tears in my eyes, I can finally see the finish line. Via: @powerhousenurses - Repost from Powerhouse LSU Alumni @indiana_black 🏥💉💊 - "Part 1: Day 2 of M3 orientation and I'm reading a paper authored by one of my mentors, Dr. Kanade Shinkai, entitled "Rethinking How We Select Dermatology Applicants—Turning the Tide" leisurely as I wait to be fingerprinted for my VA rotation. It's ironic because every print laid down today will be unique, it speaks to the ethos of our humanity. This very concept of uniqueness prompted me to deliver a presentation a few weeks ago at @uflorida on disparities in medicine. When I think about opportunities like these, I'm humbled and proud to represent myself, and inherently, a community of individuals who have endured much loss in the burgeoning of this country; but my contribution alone isn't enough. The push for a heterogeneous medical community, in conjunction with higher minority presence in the STEM fields is essential for our entire country's prosperity and does not selectively benefit one group. So get out, encourage, inquire, and insist that more minorities aspire to be greater. Go farther. Think bigger. As a southern boy sitting on the banks of the Red River, I never thought I'd be where I am today...and that's the case for many of our youth.
