Brian McClellan's Powder Mage two-part trilogies (hexilogy?) are seriously great fantasy and hardly any one I know has even heard of them.

I'll pitch it to my friends, "Yeah take the French Revolution, add in sorcerers, blood witches, and soldiers that snort cocaine gunpowder for fighting powers and you have the beginnings of the series" and they're like fuck yeah sounds awesome

The only think I can think of for why they're not more popular is their size. Each of the six books is huge, about a 20 hour audiobook or 1000 or so pages. To which I say, "THE NOVELLAS RULE TOO"

I just finished rereading Promise of Blood, the first book in the first Powdermage trilogy by Brian McClellan, and I kept thinking about its similarities to the Wheel of Time Universe. It’s been quite a while since I’ve read the rest of the books, but at least from the lore explored in the first book, the world of powdermage just feels like it’s a different age, a different turning of the wheel. Maybe an age that isn’t focused on the dragon vs the dark one.

Given the author’s relationship to Sanderson, it’s not surprising that his work feels similar in vibes to both him and Jordan. I just always find it interesting to imagine other pieces of media as different turnings of the wheel.

I got the paperback a while back and I'm having such a good time with this, I'm actually sad that I won't be able to get the other two books....since they aren't listed yet. But fingers crossed for me to be able to get them really soon
