Instagram Takeovers
What is an Instagram Takeover?
An Instagram takeover is the process of taking over someone else’s Instagram account temporarily and sharing content with their audience. Instagram takeovers are an incredible way for brands, individuals and influencers to collaborate and cross-promote content. In the case of a photographer it could be a way to show work or the process of working as a way of promoting content and to attempt to bring in more potential clients. They are hopefully fun for both parties involved and should therefore be fun for people to view.

Why do Takeovers Work?
The purpose of a takeover is for the two parties to get an equal amount out of the content that is created. In most cases it is a chance for parties to reach an audience that they wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to. In the case of me using the KSA instagram I will get my reach to potential students or clients looking to hire interns or young photographers with a new style. For the university it is a chance to show off the students, the mentor and the quality of my work will reflect on them. For the university it is a chance to convert some potential students into actual applicants for those that are on the fence about the university. 
What each party gets out of the takeover dictates what the process and products should look like. In order for the university to convert potential students by making the course look good, I have to be showing my best work. However it is also important to make it look like the course has been enjoyable and that for those who are unsure, the university provides constant support. It should be dynamic as that will get the most response and benefit us both the most. 
Takeovers also work because they encourage engagement. In order to really make the most of Instagram, an incredibly over saturated and active social media, you need to get engagements on your posts.This means more than simple likes, you need viewers to comment on what they are seeing so you want to create a post that encourages that engagement.

The other thing that needs to be taken into consideration is the type of takeover you are going to execute. Each one comes with its own drawbacks and benefits so choosing the one or two that matches both of the parties. They can be used in conjunction with each other or individually, you just have to assess what is going to give you the best reach. 
The first idea you might have when it comes to a takeover is just posting directly to the first party’s feed. This might include making 3 posts in a day or over a short period to complete a line or perhaps something more intensive like 9 posts to complete the grid so it has a consistent aesthetic. This was the original way of doing a takeover when they first became popular on instagram back in 2012. It has been slightly replaced in recent years by more current methods as the instagram app has evolved but it seems to be the style of choice for the other students on my course who have already begun their takeovers. 
Now the more popular form of takeover using stories is a great way for people to make posts without affecting the aesthetic of the feed which is something that many brands would take into consideration. Stories disappear after 24 hours making it hard to look back on which in terms of marking would be difficult however that can be solved by saving the stories to the highlights section which shows on the instagram profile. Stories feel a bit more interactive and are a great place for videos and to have a bit of a one sided discussion or simply to explain something step by step. 
Instagram lives are probably the most interactive way to conduct a takeover. During a live show people are able to sit and watch and even comment in real time to get feedback. This is not the most popular method however it would be the best way of getting active feedback. This does however require whoever is controlling the account for the takeover to be confident enough to speak on camera which for many would be far too daunting. I do think for the university it would be a good tool to utilise but I don’t see it benefitting us who are controlling the takeover as a live session would be less about our work and that is what we are trying to focus on.
