Title: She’s Dead
The scene opens three women in a hospital room. Jules, standing on one side of the patient's bed and Hal on the other while Emily takes a patient's blood pressure.
Jules-Dude, did you hear the McRib is back?!
Hal- You know I can’t have pork
Jules-Yeah, but it’s the second best thing they have!
Hal-Second best? Oh Shamrock shake is first
Emily-Guys?
Jules-Yeah It’s coming up, I’m so excited I would drink one every day if I could
Emily-Guys…
Hal-They are too thick for me
Emily-Guys…
Jules-Oh my god what
Emily-Her blood pressure is 40 over 22 and her respirations are 3
Hal-Oh shit, here we go, it's happening.
The three women stand together, the camera looking up to three women’s faces, Hal, Jules and Emily
Jules-Should we say something?
Hal-I don’t know-you say something…
Jules-It’s okay to let go-
Hal-We are here for you
Emily-You’re not alone
A prolonged beeping sound is heard in the background. The camera turns to the opposite direction looking downward on a woman with a laceration on her head now turning cold and lifeless. The camera turns back to the three women.
Hal:
(Starts laughing then embarrassed covers her mouth)
Hal-Oh God I’m so sorry
Jules-What the fuck-
Hal-I LAUGH WHEN IM UNCOMFORTABLE!!
The three women stand, Emily and Jules stare at Hal disturbed for a second. Hal claps her hands once.
Hal-Alright let’s tag her and bag her.
The scene returns to Emily washing down the body now in the modeling stages, turned very pale with an almost blue green color. Hal is putting chapstick on the dead woman’s lips. Jules is standing in the corner watching the two vigorously work, astonished, disgusted but still willing to help. MJ enters.
MJ-Oh hey you guys just doing hourly rounding do you…is she dead?
Still completely committed to putting chapstick on the dead patient does not turn her gaze
Hal-Oh yes, very dead.
MJ-You guys could have called me
Hal-Yeah but I know you’re busy and I don’t like to bother you
MJ shifts her attention to Jules still standing in the corner of the room, shaking her head she puts her hands in the air
Jules-I don’t know Hal is weird about these things, I don’t do dead bodies but I couldn’t just leave her
MJ-Are you putting chapstick on the dead woman?
Hal-Yes, yes I am. The lips will dry out too fast when I tie her mouth shut
MJ-When you what?!-
Hal-I said- Oh you know what…I should probably tie her hands and feet together first before the rigimortus sets in or she will be a pretzel.
Jules-Why-How do you know how to-
All gazes shift to the doorway where a physician is present. He stands tall and thin but very timid without actually crossing the threshold of the room. It is silent for a second.
Jules-Uh, hello Dr….
Dr. Ashid-Ashid, ma’am with neurology. I received a call that the patient has passed? May I, uh, come in?
Hal-Sure can
Hal, Emily, MJ and Jules stand together as the physician slowly and sheepishly goes to the patient's bedside. He puts his finger cautiously onto the patients wrist, Hal rolls her eyes to which Jules nudges her not to. Emily giggles, Hal nudges her in return.
Dr. Ashid-(turns to the nurses) I uh, do not feel a pulse?
Jules-Riiiight…..
He continues to press his stethoscope to the patients chest and waits for a solid minute
Dr. Ashid-I um…don’t hear a heart beat (swallows hard)
Jules-Yeah, sounds about right
Dr. Ashid draws in a long breath
Dr. Ashid-I believe the patient is dead
Hal-(under her breath) no shit
Jules-(nudges Hal again) Thank you we can take it from here
Dr.Ashid-The time of death is 240 am
Jules-I had 230 am
Dr. Ashid-Oh right…of course.
The physician exits the room and walks down the hallways to sit at a computer and stares without turning it on. The nurses continue their care. Emily helps to bind the hands and feet together as Hal tells her while she uses a thin cloth to place under the patient's jaw to tie around the top of her head. Jules walks over to the body for the first time since the death.
Jules-Wait no tie it like this so its bunny ears
Jules grabs the ties and fashions the cloth to make little ears on the top of the corpses head careful not to touch the patient, repulsed and holding her breath. When she finishes she quickly steps away and breathes.
Hal-She’s dead Jules
Jules-Yeah but it’s less creepy this way
Emily and Hal place the body in a large white bag and slid the body over onto a large white cart.
Hal-Give me a minute to do some paperwork and we can take her down to the morgue
Emily-Where is the morgue?
There is a long pause, Hal finally shrugs and walk away. She walks down the hallway, grabs a ridiculously large black binder with the title “The Black Book” written on the front and sits at a computer with her back facing the back of Dr. Ashid still staring at the computer without it on. Hal continues to make phone calls. Dr. Ashid twiddles his thumbs in silence.
Dr. Ashid-I will call the family
Hal-(hangs up the phone and flips through the book) I already did that
Dr. Ashid-Oh…I will call the organ donation place then
Hal-Already did that too (hangs up the phone once again flipping through the book)
There is a long silence from the physician as he turns back to the blank computer screen. Hal continues to click through her computer, flip through the binder checking things off as she goes and makes another phone call.
Hal:
(on the phone)
Barry? Yeah! It’s Hal. Good to hear from you too, how’s the wife? That’s good. Hey listen I know this isn’t a coroners case but I just wanted to give you a courtesy call-What? Nah I’m a nurse now I deal with the living- yeah yeah you know these bodies talk more. (laughs) alright well I got a cold one for you in the morgue over her at Proself Hospital. Yeah Alright you too. Goodbye.
Hal hangs up the phone and closes the large black binder and turns her computer screen off.
Dr. Ashid-Should I call the coro-
Hal-Just did
Dr. Ashid scrolls through the computer going back and forth from one tab to the next.
Dr. Ashid-Oh I should chart the time of death…does anyone know where I am supposed to chart that?
Hal turns to the physician to just stare at him. They hold the awkward silence between them for a few seconds. Becoming physically uncomfortable the physician turns back to the computer. There is a long silent pause.
Dr. Ashid-So what do I do?
Hal pushes a form over to the physician, looking to her in astonishment.
Hal-Sign this.
The physician signs the form and turns to walk away. He makes one more deep sigh and turns back to Hal, still sitting with her back to him. He places his hand on her shoulder.
Dr. Ashid-Good job...
He exits the nurses station and as he turns the corner Jules pulls up a chair next to Hal.
Jules-Was he a little odd to you?
Hal-You think?
Jules-Seems kinda like your type, you’re single right?
Hal-Ha Ha that’s..so...funny. I’d rather not talk about my love life and sheep aren’t really my type anyway.
Jules-But did you see how he checked that pulse on that dead lady? That’s a winner.
Hal and Jules share a laugh
Hal-Dude stop-Hey I’m gonna take the body down wanna come-
Emily-(comes around the corner) I WANNA GO- do you think there’s more bodies down there.
Jules and Hal take a long disturbed look into Emily’s crazy demented eyes. Hal smiles, Jules continues to be disturbed
Jules-I’ll sit this one out, you guys have fun.
Hal-Come along let's find the morgue. I know it's in the basement….somewhere.
Emily-How hard can it really be to find?
Hal-I don’t know, it’s a whole morgue it can’t be that hard to find.
Emily and Hal exit the scene pushing the body down the hall and disappearing into the elevator. Jules continues to sit at a computer desk without noticing she’s the only one left on the unit. It’s very quiet. Jules looks around to find no one. A furnace kicks on suddenly and scares Jules into a ducking position. She stands up and cautiously peaks around the corner to peer down one end of the hallway and then the other.
Jules-Hal? Emily?
Cut to Emily, Hal and the body beginning the descent down the large elevator leading them into the basement which appears to be eerie and possibly, more than likely haunted. The only lighting is an ominous yellow tinted light and a cold wet smell fills the air.
Hal-This. Is. My. Happy. Place
Emily-Are you okay?
They continue to push the cart down a hallway that is of 100 meters in length. There are many doors and little side hallways that they attempt to go down yet none of which lead to the morgue. They finally come to a set of double doors
Hal-Oh this has got to be it
Hal leaves Emily and the body to push open the doors as if presenting a grand prize on the price is right. As she does Emily pushes the body forward but fails to notice the floor is slanting downward and the body rolls into Hal and through the doors. They have made a grave mistake because the doors had not led to a morgue but a cold wet parking lot.
Emily-Hal!
Hal and Emily stand hold onto the edges of the cart, dumbfounded.
Hal-FUCK!
We return back to the 9th floor where the day shift nurses are pouring in along with physicians, physical therapy and all others unfamiliar to the nightshift world. Jules approaches Hal
Jules-Where the fuck were you guys
Emily-Hal got us lost and we ended up in a garage
Jules-Where’s the body?
Hal-IT’S IN THE MORGUE WHAT DO I LOOK LIKE…
Jules looks in disappointment
Hal-did we get lost yes. Did we end up in a garage, yes. But we found it. Finally
Jules-Well hurry up and give report I wanna go get breakfast.
Hal scuttles over to the day shift nurse Rachel who is less than pleased that Hal wasn’t immediately available when she was. She quickly gives a report on the remainder of her patients. Rachel continues to write in frustration at Hal not having all the answers she wants
Rachel-So where is this patient going?
Hal-Uh what do you mean?
Rachel-(looking at Hal in annoyance) where are they going after this? Like what’s the plan?
Hal-You know I really don’t know I didn’t get the chance to read through the social workers-
Rachel-What is she on antibiotics for?
Hal-For Infection
Rachel-Well I guessed that, but where is the infection
Hal-Oh, uh you know I don’t-
Rachel-You really don’t know where the infection is? Are you serious? So we have an infection and you don’t know where it is
Hal flips through her papers quickly trying to find an answer. Jules stands behind them at the nurses station still within Hals view with concern, gesturing to Hal asking if she’s okay. Hal looks up and shakes head signaling to Jules her distress without Rachel noticing
Rachel-Don’t even bother, I'll figure it out eventually. (Annoyed) You know, it’s really inconsiderate of you to not be prepared for report, it's inhibiting patient care.
Hal-I’m sorry, I just got done taking a body downstairs so I guess that’s my bad-
Jules, fed up, walks over and steps in front of Hal
Jules-Hey, we got a problem here?
Rachel-(now polite) No No, No problem
Jules-alright good (turns to Hal) are you done? (Hal nods) Let’s go
Hal follows Jules upset like a dog with a tail between her legs.
Jules-Don’t let her get to you, she’s just bitch
Hal and Jules share a laugh down the hall and joke about the night as they approach the elevator.
The scene cuts to Hal and Jules sitting at a diner. Hal sips coffee and Jules begins to eat her pancakes.
Hal-Weird fucking night right?
Jules-You made it weird ya weirdo! Laughing at a dead body, what’s wrong with you
Hal-I told you I laugh when I’m uncomfortable.
Jules-Well you’re going to keep laughing then because you ain’t comfortable when you’re up on 9.
Hal-I don’t know…(smiles remembering Jules stepping up for her) I think I’m getting there.
Jules-Whatever (laughs)
END.
