Character Design Evolution of Cats: Grizabella

1981: Elaine Paige is much younger in 1981 than she is in 1998, and that somehow gives Grizabella a strange gothic doll vibe. A strange doll ghost who haunts you for not being nice to her in life.

1982: Not a doll. Not a ghost. This gray lady means business.

1998: Looks like an older woman. She’s an old beggar who’s been crying a lot. She probably means business too, but she’s too tired from her terrible life to really show it.

Also her ears are round and look more like mouse ears than cat ears, which apparently confused a lot of children back in the day.

2016: A young woman with smeared make-up and a tiny scar on her forehead. I don’t get it. She doesn’t need to go to the Heaviside Layer. She’s not dying anytime soon. She just needs a home. Did the other cats really forgive her or did they basically just murder her so they wouldn’t have to deal? This really doesn’t make sense.

2019: And this somehow makes even less sense. She just looks like she chose to wear expensive clothes on an ordinary day and they got ruined. She doesn’t even have the tiny scar. You wouldn’t get that she’s suffering if she wasn’t crying all the time. Also, here’s some more shitty lighting so she barely stands out from the background. 

Seriously, the lighting in this movie is either “bright neon signs that blind you” or “Grim and gritty real darkness so you also can’t see.”.
