Suit

It catches Sam’s eyes as they’re walking through the small town. Dean is forced to stop when Sam does, gaze trained on something.

“Sammy? What’s—“ Dean inhales sharply as his eyes trail to where Sam’s focus is.

It’s a white suit, displayed through glass on a male mannequin.

SamLucifer stood there, wearing a white suit and holding a plucked rose in his fingers.

“Since when did you get an interest in clothes? Are you tapping into your feminine side?” Dean asks jokingly, but his tone wavers slightly in nervousness.

“Hello, Dean,” Lucifer greeted with a stolen quirked smile.

Sam gives him a bitch face before replying, “I was just looking.” He pauses, turning back to the suit. “But maybe I could pull it off…”

“Nope! Nope, white isn’t your colour.” Dean hurriedly yanks Sam’s wrist and drags him away.

They walk in silence after that, and Dean can’t help but play Lucifer’s words over and over in his head.

"No matter what you do, no matter what choices you make, what details you alter, we will always end up…here."

“Not ever, asshole.” Dean growls under his breath.

“You really hate white that much, Dean?” Sam asks with an amused smile.

“No, no. It’s just…” Dean trails off and realizes he’s still holding tightly to Sam’s wrist, quickly letting go with a slightly embarrassed flush over his cheeks.

“Just?”

“Just nothing. Are we finding this shifter or what?” he snaps, walking ahead of his brother, who snorts behind him.

“Sure. Whatever you say.”

Sam looks great in white, but the sight of the Devil being present with the suit on has burned all prospects of Dean ever letting his little brother wear white. Not that Dean will ever tell Sam that.

And then SECONDS after she says that she BARGES IN UNANNOUNCED giving Spike absolutely ZERO time to make himself decent if he was doing something. She literally bounces in and struts up to him in such a way she is getting wind machine level Beyoncé hair. Like GIRL WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO WALK IN ON barging in without knocking 😹😹😹 which is literally the only way she ever enters his crypt… playing with fire fr

ONLY TO CHOOSE THE WORD PROPOSITION. Not “I need information, I need a favor/help” A PROPOSITION for you. Ya know like “to proposition someone” for sex…

And SPIKE just BOUNDS right up to her in a way that flexes his arm muscles in the process and gets him RIGHT in her face, saying he’s got a proposition for her too…. they did not need to be this close to talk and she doesn’t even back up at all 😹 what she does do is LOOK AWAY when he flexes his arms to propel himself up only to look back at him when he’s standing in front of her 👀 she’s like RILEY focus on RILEY do not get distracted by his arms LOOK AWAY

The SLAP instead of a punch??? He looks SHOCKED that it was a slap instead of a punch when he literally just called her boyfriend an enormous hall monitor and asked tauntingly if he was gonna die and all it elicits is a slap that doesn’t even have full slayer strength behind it 😹😹😹 like this is basically a love tap for them when we see a shove from her send him FLYINGGG across the room when she really means it in “Smashed”

AND THEN SHE’S LIKE “I’D BE DATING SPIKE” as her attempt at reassurance to Riley that super strength isn’t what she cares about BUT IF IT WAS it would in fact be Spike 👀 like she had that alternative READDDDY to go. To me this says she’s thought about what would life be like if she had started dating Spike after “something blue” instead of Riley. Probably since she found out Riley was a demon hunter and no longer the “normal” option between the two which was Riley’s biggest appeal to her as part of her attempt to show she had “normal” taste in men after thoroughly enjoying being all over Spike in “something blue” (as I talked about in a previous post)

Also Spike isn’t the only one showing off his arms!! Buffy has her jacket on to go look for Riley but is just in her white tank and red leather pants to flirt TALK with Spike. Which literally is showing more skin, but ALSO is a physical representation of the relationship she’s always had with spike that revolves around vulnerability and the differences in her behavior between Riley & Spike with how vulnerable she is this season but even as far back as season three when she says she can’t lie to herself OR SPIKE.

AND the fact that Spike is in a different outfit in his dream but Buffy isn’t 👀 he was checking her OUTTT in that outfit and even though he saw her with her jacket on at the hospital he’s dreaming about how she looked when she came looking for him. Also the way she’s just BATHED in light when she first walks in UGH 😻😻😻 looking like a leather clad angel of death sent to destroy the version of spike created by Angel and Drusilla’s abuse bit by bit. I quite literally could not be more obsessed with them

"The Loop"

Tommy is like Charon on his own boat who will carry his soul into the world of the dead: "And only the January can get me away". The canal is like the river Styx, a transitional space. I was thinking about Charlie taking Danny Wizz-Bang to London after his fake death and about Orpheus who was forbidden by Charon to cross the river for the second time to take his Eurydice back into the upper world. And now Tommy wants to steer the boat himself.

January is named after Janus, the god of beginnings and transitions in Roman mythology. He is usually depicted as having two faces.

Mosley says: "Just realised you are the perfect balance between the gods Dionysus and Apollo. Irrational frenzy controlled by reason and self reflection. Do you know the work of Frederich Nietzsche?". It was a concept about a duality between them.

Grace is the first who was openly introduced as a two-faced. Barmaid but cop. And here we go: coal but opium, Mosley but Churchill, killings but charity, Grace is dead but she is alive, I'm alive but I'm not, home but prison, I have everything but I have nothing and the icing on a cake, his favorite, a coin toss.

Also, Grace represents opium and death as well, lying like in a coffin. She is the one who's killing him and he allows her to. He's addicted not to opium, but to Grace. Perhaps, the most chilling thing about this addition is that he's fully aware of all the consequences and the fact that his opium is killing him, but he doesn't stop and doesn't want to stop, no matter how bad it is. Because this is probably his only one opportunity to see Grace or even worse, reunite with her.

It was always about contradiction and dichotomy.

The January is the boat he was born on. So it represents his origin. Like an information about his past that can be moved somewhere far away to be concealed. And Tommy says it's their dad's boat. Direct evidence of him thinking he became his own father who had been hated by the whole family. And this is why he tells Ada to keep her new born baby away from him. Tommy turned into his worst fears.

AUs

I’ve read some reactions to The Winchesters that people were disappointed that it turned out to be an AU, and they felt that this story had no real stakes or impact on the main spn universe as a result. Of course, people can have whatever emotional reactions to a text that they want, but I think dismissing AUs as completely irrelevant is a misreading and a refusal to engage in symbolism and thematic developments. AUs are mirrors and windows; they present reflections of and provide new insights into the characters’ own universe. In spnwin, that character is obviously Dean: he’s our narrator, he’s the one entering this AU, he’s the one seeing aspects of himself and his significant relationships reflected back to him as the story unfolds.

The purpose of an AU is to change the character’s perspective; this is the case within the original spn universe: “The End” (5.04), for instance, is a warning to Dean that he can’t escape his role in the Apocalypse, that his refusal to engage will just result in more pain but ultimately, the same showdown that he’s hurtling towards right now. On another level, though, “The End” is about Dean’s relationship anxieties; he sees a future version of himself who is ruthless and cold, whose core relationships are either entirely severed (in the case of Sam) or fraught with unspoken pain (with Cas). In the beginning of s5, Dean’s tensions with Sam are obvious; he’s just discovered that Sam has been drinking demon blood and he’s in a relationship with a demon, Sam’s insisting that this is just a means to an end to be strong enough to defeat Lilith, but that plan ends up kickstarting the entire Apocalypse, etc. etc. So it’s clear why “The End” is reflecting Dean’s worst fears about what Sam could be capable of (embracing his role as Lucifer’s vessel). But it’s also fascinating what “The End” reveals about Dean’s relationship with Cas, and perhaps some insight into Dean’s worries about what might come of this unexpected, intense connection they’ve forged since Cas lifted him out of hell. The tension between Endverse Dean and mostly-human Endverse Cas is palpable; you get the sense that some deep wounds have been wrought by both of them, and their flaws have been magnified: Cas’s doubts have devolved into nihilism, Dean’s desperation to resist and survive no matter what has hardened him into someone brutal and terribly alone. So much is contained in Cas’s “of course” response: you’ve hurt me, I’ve hurt you, we’re broken, we’re doomed, there’s no way this will help, but no matter, I’ll go with you, of course. But there’s bitterness here too; while they’re here together at the end of the world, they’re out of step with each other. Something has broken between them that they can’t get back; Endverse Cas says it aloud, “what? I love like past you.” He can’t quite love what this Dean has become; something quietly devastating in that.

“The End” is also crucial in developing the themes of free will and autonomy, of course. It lays out all of Dean’s fears: that his choices don’t matter, that there are no other options despite the illusion of escape they provide, but ultimately, his fate is sealed.

(I think that point is important to keep in mind with The Winchesters as well; there are a lot of ways that this AU could still result in Mary burning on the ceiling and John becoming consumed with vengeance.)

So the AU 1972 that Dean stumbles upon has broadcast to us pretty loud and clear what impact this is having on original universe Dean: he’s our narrator, our point of view character. This is Dean processing his own inter-generational trauma, his own past, his own regrets, his desires for a different life free of all the burdens that were foisted upon him. And so all those Destiel parallels... those are not Easter eggs just there for the audience. This is an indication of how Dean is interpreting these events; that’s the entire point of an AU, is to have the in-universe character gain a new perspective on their own life, their current situation. Dean’s current situation becomes clear in the finale: he’s in heaven, and he doesn’t want to be. He’s awfully quick to offer his own exile when Jack reprimands him. He seems to have gone looking for a way out before he found out about the Akrida. The entire episode, he looks sad, heartbroken. Jack notes that he’s not at peace (and essentially commands him to make his peace now). If this was a successful mission, if Dean’s main purpose was to defeat the Akrida and help his AU parents heal and form a more stable foundation to their relationship, wouldn’t he be satisfied? But he clearly isn’t. He has his own motives that he isn’t willing to divulge yet, but read how this AU unfolds, what details Dean is paying attention to (which ones are reflections of himself), and you can follow the clues. This isn’t just subtext; it’s the roadmap.

8. In the same scene, Endverse Dean holds up his assault rifle and answers “I don’t want to fuck my clone because my self-loathing is THAT strong.”

9. Dean, completely under the memory curse in 12.11 Regarding Dean, says with wide eyes “I would not have sex with my clone because what if my clone is evil.”

10. Demon Dean in 10.01 Black, reclining naked in bed, makes a funny face and gestures cheekily as he answers “Not only would I have sex with my clone, I'd probably make a bunch of clones and just get it on with all of them at once because that's how pro-clone fucking I am.”

Everybody leaves you, Dean. You noticed? Mommy. Daddy. Even Sam. You ever ask yourself why? Maybe it’s not them. Maybe, it’s you.

(5.16 "Dark Side of the Moon")

Just. A quick post on this, because I think that some fans, right along with Dean during this interaction, have been tricked into believing that this is true. They have been tricked by this dialogue into believing that Dean is a clingy, overly needy person who pushes every single person he loves away by needing too much or just by being too much in general.

This is not true.

Mary didn't leave because her four year old was a burden, and if she had, that wouldn't have been Dean's fault at four years old. Mary died because she made a demon deal before she even had kids.

John didn't leave because Dean was a burden. John's absences from Dean (AND SAM's) life happened because of John's issues—because he coped with trauma through vengeance and lost sight of his family until the end, when his last act was to sacrifice himself to save Dean's life.

Recognizing that Mary and John leaving Dean had nothing to do with Dean being a burden in real life, the idea that Dean is always being left behind and that him always being the common denominator implicates him breaks down.

Dean and Sam's relationship is a particularly complicated one—made so by multiple deaths, parentification in childhood, childhood neglect, and terrifying apocalyptic destinies. To make Sam running away at 12 or going to school about Dean being the problem is to vastly undersell the conflict Sam had with John. In fact, even with Sam clashes with Dean directly in the early seasons, he is usually using Dean as a stand in for a fight he can't have with their father—and we see the actual blow up occur between father and son in 1.20. Strife between Sam and Dean about living in each other's pockets also isn't one-sided when that kind of strife rears its head. In fact, Dean was the one relieved to be away from Sam a little earlier in the season, from 5.02 to the end of 5.04. Dean called his family chains in 5.03 and was very directly referring to Sam.

There's good and bad among Sam and Dean's feelings about each other, but we know from 5.22 "Swan Song" that the idea sold in 5.16 "Dark Side of the Moon"—that Sam doesn't have happy memories with Dean—is a flat out lie. Happy memories with Dean are literally what breaks Lucifer's control over Sam's body, flipping a switch in Sam's head as memory after memory of being on the road with Dean rushes fondly through Sam's mind.

Zachariah leads Sam and Dean through heaven like rats in a maze. He knew where they were the entire time they were in heaven. Sam and Dean were lead to believe they could hide, but Zachariah always knew where they were. He popped up in certain areas to drive them from one place to another, in a loop through memories selling the story Zachariah wanted to sell.

He pushed them away from the happy memories Sam has with Dean (as seen in "Swan Song") and toward memories where Sam was away from their family (two of which specifically represented escape from John) to sell the narrative that Sam doesn't care about Dean. Zachariah tries to sell this narrative because 5.04 "The End" culminated in Dean feeling he and Sam were both stronger together than apart. Zachariah is deliberately trying to break Dean's belief in that family bond to drive him away from his family and toward despair. He wants Dean to stop believing that he could ever be enough to keep Sam from saying "Yes". Zachariah wants Dean to see himself as disposable because Zachariah wants Dean to make himself a disposable vessel. Zachariah wants Dean to feel completely unloved and alone.

what are your top 5 choni scenes and why

was cleaning out my inbox and found this from 6 years ago lmao back when this would have been a lot easier to answer because they had a LOT less scenes. i really tried to sit and narrow it down to just 5 scenes, even if i couldn’t rank them, but it was really hard without setting some limits, so i’m going to make myself only pick one scene per season and list them in chronological order.

season 2: first kiss. just iconic, perfectly set up and executed. best first kiss on the show, hands down, was never topped. cinematic. honorable mentions to the scene at the bijou and their almost kiss.

season 3: their reunion in the finale. it’s a short scene, but so sweet. toni gathering the cavalry to save cheryl, the ‘baby?!’, the running hug and kiss, the sheer relief and emotion in toni’s voice, so good. honorable mentions to the 3.12 bed scene purely for how cozy it is and cheryl sacrificing herself to save toni at the farm, also so cinematic.

season 4: the couch cuddling scene post thanksgiving dinner. so comfy and sweet. i love a good cuddling moment, but add in a cute i love you exchange and a kiss? i’m happy. honorable mentions to the 4.08 pops scene and cheryl telling toni about nick, so much better than the garbage suicide attempt convo from s3 that was all about archie.

season 5: the pops convo from 5.05, nobody could ever make me hate that scene, the emotion and history and understanding and love there, just so good. forever mourning the excellent angst of those first two time jump episodes. what could have been if the rest of the season kept that tone. honorable mentions to the whole flashback sequence in 5.04 and the convo in 5.18. i do like their break up scene too but i’ll always be bitter about how much better it could have and should have been. deserved a last kiss or cuddle at the very least.

season 7: the music room convo in 7.10 is just so perfect, absolutely no notes. really sweet and mature and well written as a stand alone resolution to the plot in that episode, but even more satisfying and meaningful from a larger stand point, showing their growth from s3 and how they’re doing things right this time, etc. honorable mentions to the scene outside the school in 7.08 for some reason and the photoshoot, i think, but there’s so many i really love.

(no scene selection for s6 since i had to cut a season to narrow it down to 5 and most of the choni content in s6 is thabigail, but the bed scene from the finale is very excellent and bittersweet, even if i retroactively wish they had given us more since it ended up being the last interaction in the og timeline and there was a lot of opportunity for more closure there than what we got. and i think if they’d known they weren’t going back to the og timeline back then, we would have gotten more, but alas.)

You said in your list of episodes that you don’t like 4.07 and 5.04 for lots of other reasons and I’m wondering if you could say more?

Oh boy, okay, get ready for another essay.

(And again, to clarify, I love our show. I don't like to be negative and nitpick every little detail. But no show is perfect, and to me these are two of the episodes that really just missed the mark.)

4x07 Fire Fight

This one already made it onto my least favorite Chenford eps for reasons I spelled out here. But that's actually not my main beef with the episode. It's Nolan's storyline that I dislike. First of all, I've always found it to be unnecessarily depraved and gruesome. And I realize there are actually people like that in the world, and that's clearly what they were going for, but I did not enjoy watching it. They could have accomplished the same ultimate storytelling goal in a less horrifying way. Secondly, Nolan's escape is just absolutely unrealistic. I know, I know, he's the protagonist. And obviously I knew from the beginning that he was going to make it out alive, because they're not going to kill off their lead. But I honestly had zero investment in how he was going to make it out. I don't care how much adrenaline was coursing through him, I can't suspend my disbelief enough to make his escape seem remotely realistic.

5x04 The Choice

First of all, RIP Annie Wersching. I was so shocked and saddened when she passed away. She was a talented actress and such a good villain in both this show and Castle. It also explains why the storyline was wrapped up so hastily. I know they were limited in their options. That being said, I didn't like how it ended. I already talked about the Chenford of it all in my previous post (in short, there was a lack of compassion from Tim toward Lucy's trauma and a lack of closure for both of them). My main complaint about the rest of the storyline is (a) plot holes and (b) the John and Bailey of it all. Actually, part (a) goes back to the end of 5x01 when Rosalind somehow escapes across the border. Like... what??? As if the plates on that car wouldn't have been flagged??? There's absolutely no way a high profile criminal like her would have been able to cross the border in the same car she used to flee the scene, but according to Grey that's exactly what happened. And then she comes back just to torment John and end up dead? If they'd given Rosalind a terminal illness as well, it might have made sense. Like, she wanted that to be her legacy, to corrupt the incorruptible boy scout and make him live with that for the rest of his life. But since they didn't go that route, it just felt like she was inexplicably giving up. I was left with a lack of understanding and a lack of closure. Lastly, the actual way it all went down had too many unrealistic moments. Like... am I supposed to believe that Bailey and her crew showed up at that house and Bailey just happened to be the one to fall into that trap rather than any of the others? Too convenient. And for the life of me, I will never understand why Tim used an axe to try to break the glass (which was very obviously not going to break that way) when he could have just had Bailey back against the wall of the trap so he could shoot a hole in it and let it start to drain. I'm sure there are other details too that I'm not remembering, but really my overall point is that - even on a shortened timetable - there was so much potential for this storyline to come to a satisfying resolution, but that didn't happen.

So, I originally started this blog so I could reblog all the Aldhelm posts I had been bookmarking over the past year and a half, keeping them all in one place since I did not want to post them on my main art blog. I also wanted to use it to post my fic, since I finally decided to take the risk and publish it for better or for worse, and also share all the screencaps I had been taking for drawing references (and just for my own pleasure let's be honest here).

I am rather late to this fandom, having binge watched this show in the middle of last year (2022) just as season 5 was released. It was sitting in my watchlist on Netflix for a few years, but I neglected it, thinking it was just another Vikings ripoff. Boy was I wrong. This show has really gotten to me in a way that no other TV show or movie has. I have never been so obsessed with a TV show or movie in my entire life.

But what compelled me to make an Aldhelm blog? Well, for starters, it had become apparent to me that, although many in this fandom like his character, very few consider him to be their favorite character, and far fewer still are obsessed about him in the same way that many are about Sihtric or Finan, for example. I still can't wrap my head around that, but maybe I am the weirdo, so oh well. I will create another post about why I love him so much at a later date if anyone cares to read it.

There are tons of blogs for the show in general and for other characters, and most of Uhtred's "pretty boys" get lots of love on here, but not so much for Aldhelm. I don't know if anyone else will really care about anything on this blog, but it is honestly not why I made it. This is more for my own sake than anyone else's, and if anyone else gets anything out of this that is great too.

I'm seeing that many antis (with their lil degrees) haven't read the American Psychological Association's Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (2017) yet and aren't even aware of the basics. So I thought I'd give them a head start:

And that's just the Principles, or "How not to be a Dickhead 101", to all the budding psychologists... You should really familiarize yourself with all the sections, but particularly standard 5.04 since you all like spouting off so much:

dean/lucifer is based on 5.04 The End, where seeing sam used a vessel hits too close to home and deans mouth ends up with him between the devil and a hard place. non-con, humiliation, degradation and manipulation, guilt.

dognatural john/mary is just a world building fic for a series of fics where the characters are anthropomorphic dogs. Light smut, Pregnancy complications, miscarriages, angst, codependency.
