Pokeshipping Week 2024

Prompt 2: Fireworks

The sun, which had been setting earlier and earlier every evening, was just sinking below the distant mountains when the fireworks began lighting up the sky at the Summer’s End festival down by the Pallet Town coast.

Brock was inside helping Ash’s mom clean up after dinner, so it was just Ash, Misty, Pikachu, and Togepi out on the patio, enjoying the show.

Their mindless conversation petered out as the fireworks began, lulling them into a comfortable, easy silence.

“You know,” Ash began casually after a bit, “Gary and I almost set that tree on fire with a firework once.”

Misty’s face broke into a grin. “No,” she gasped, delighted. “What happened? And also, who in their right mind would give you two explosives?”

“Gary stole them from Professor Oak, obviously,” Ash chuckled, and stretched out his arm to point to a barely noticeable, bare, dark patch of bark on the big maple tree next to his house. “There used to be a branch right there. We had a swing tied to it and everything. Well, Gary snagged a bottle rocket or something from the Professor’s stash and we decided it would be a good idea to, you know, try it out.”

“Oh no, Ash,” Misty said, biting her lip in anticipation.

Ash just grinned. “He had his family’s growlithe, the same arcanine he still has now, by the way, use a little flame thrower on the wick.” He paused to laugh at his younger self again, shaking his head. “We were like, eight years old, so we had enough common sense to not aim at the house, but, well…”

He trailed off, cringing playfully at Misty who gasped in disbelief and amusement. “You forgot about the tree.”

“We forgot about the tree.”

It was something they did from time to time while traveling; reminiscing and telling stories of their childhoods, and for a while, Ash had actually been self-conscious. Misty and Brock both grew up in cities, in their families gyms, surrounded by pokemon and battling and excitement. What could Ash, who grew up in nowhere, Pallet Town, possibly share compared to them?

He brought it up to Brock one day after Misty had told them a story about dumping bubble bath into the main battlefield two days before an inspection when she was four years old, but he just raised an eyebrow and smiled down at him wryly. “Ash, have Misty or I ever looked bored during one of your childhood stories?” he asked.

“No,” Ash admitted.

Brock hummed. “Because we’re not. Especially Misty, she’s always thrilled to hear about the stupid and ridiculous things you got up to as a little kid.”

Ash shrugged, feeling just a bit shy at the idea. “I don’t know why,” he murmured.

“Maybe because it’s not so much the content of the story that she cares about as much as it’s the fact that it’s you, and she wants to learn and hear more about you,” Brock had explained, like it was that simple. And even though Ash seriously doubted that was it, he had to admit, Misty was always excited for him to share the antidotes of his past.

Exactly like she was now, her eyes sparkling with the reflection of fireworks and glee at his tale of almost-arson. For some reason, he always enjoyed making Misty laugh the most.

“What’s so funny, you two?” came Brock’s voice as he patio door slid open, Brock and his mom joining them with a tray holding hot apple cider. Misty give them a gigantic grin.

“Ash was telling me about the time he nearly set the whole yard on fire,” she chirped in excited exaggeration. Ash’s mom sighed.

“Which time?” she asked, tiredly.

Somehow, Misty’s grin got even wider as she bounced in her seat, prodding her into sharing more stories.

Ash just sat back and enjoyed the show, the fireworks forgotten.

Why I M O, Pokeshipping is dead. ( kinda hot take, sorry pokeshippers. )

So, pokeshipping. The very 1st ship in the Pokemon anime’s history. I personally am not a fan of it, I did watch the original anime, and I personally don’t like misty’s character. It was off putting to me.

Now as to what your here for, what killed pokeshipping. There are 3 main contributors to the death of pokeshipping.

1.) The length of time from when misty was replaced to now,

2.) Serena and Amourshipping

3.) The Pokémon sun and moon anime

The length of time from when misty was replaced to now. Now while this might not have been much of an issue if the other 2 bullet points didn’t exist, it has been over a decade at this point, since we last saw misty, meaning that we have a severe lack in character development, and that gives time for other potentially better ships to be created, which leads me to my next point,

Serena and Amourshipping. Possibly one of the biggest ships right now, (which at this point isn’t going to fizzle out anytime soon. ) With Amourshipping going so far, as to introduce a major plot point in ash’s story by having Serena be his childhood acquaintance, many other points that multiple poketubers like Catch ‘Em All Saul, bring up in their videos from years past, to the kiss, and even the writers basically confirming the darn thing.

So at this point, ( unless they throw all that away, which please. Don’t. ) there is next to no hope of pokeshipping to ever become cannon, which is only further proven by my last point,

The Pokémon sun and moon anime. Now, this is honestly the iceberg that sank the ship, because Brock and Misty returned twice in the Sun and Moon anime, which I’m pretty sure was for let’s go promotion. Now this is where all hope is lost for pokeshipping because even though they returned twice, Misty had literally zero emotional moments with ash whatsoever. No pokeshipping pandering, no flashbacks, nothing. Here’s another video explaining that further.

Now while the only good thing to come out of the re-return episodes was Brock possibly finally finding a girlfriend,

This was the point of no return for Misty and pokeshipping in general. Misty, even though she returned twice, in the most recent anime, had literally no development, and nothing to show how she grew as a character since her absence, her return seems pointless and devoid of substance, and with another ship still gaining popularity at an exponential rate, I’m sorry pokeshippers, but,

It’s time to pay your respects, and move on.

“Quit whining, we’re almost there!”

“Well we would have been there faster if SOMEONE didn’t run towards Mt. Mortar!”

“I thought there was a rare Pokemon! I didn’t think we’d get lost!”

“You’d lose your head if it wasn’t attached!”

“Speaking of losing, didn’t you lose to me last time we battled?” Ash puffed out his chest in a victorious fashion, stomping forward in his usual way.

Misty almost lunged until Brock put a gentle hand on her shoulder to stop her. 

The path to Mahogany Town had been longer than expected.

Brock sighed from behind them. This always happened. They bickered like an old married couple. He knew more than anyone that they cared for each other more than anything. He just wished they’d do it a little quieter. It was getting late and the hunger on top of the constant one-upping was giving the rock-type leader a headache.

“Don’t, he’s doing that to push your buttons.”

Misty sighed. “I know. Sometimes I wish I could just ki-I mean beat!! Beat!! Beat that smirk off his smug face!” She insisted that her correction was what she meant to say, and not what she almost said. She could feel her face heating up at the thought.

Brock smirked. “Oh yeah?”

“What’s that smirk for??”

“Oh nothing.” Brock said with a hum and trotted ahead leaving Misty to stew in her embarrassment. 

A half hour later…

The Pokémon Center finally came into view. And just beyond it was Mahogany Town! 

“Finally! My legs feel like they’re gonna fall off!” Brock cried happily.

Ash looked up to Pikachu. “Look at that, buddy! We can finally go eat and take a bath!”

“And I can get some beauty sleep! A shower and bed is just what I need after hiking all day!”

Ash scoffed. “Why do you need beauty sleep?” You’re pretty enough already.” Ash retorted before he could even realize what he said. The words had escaped him too fast.

Even Pikachu looked surprised.

Misty was already ready with a comeback. “Because, Ash Ketchum, some people care about more things than—w-wwhat?”

She then realized what he actually said!

“What?” Ash got defensive. “What’s the problem?”

“What you said to me. Just now.” Misty’s voice was now a whisper.

Ash pauses realizing what he said now. “I…”

“Did you mean it?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Misty still couldn’t meet his gaze. “Did you mean what you said. When you called me that…”

Ash gulped. “Um…”

“Pika.” Pikachu patted his head like he was comforting him. 

“Yeah! I meant it! I said what I said! So what if I did?!” Ash yelled and ran off to the Pokémon Center before Misty could see his cheeks turning as red as Pikachu’s.

Misty was stunned. Ash Ketchum—the single minded boy who was denseer than a Rhydon—actually gave her a compliment! Come to think of it, he complimented her a lot. But this was the first time he ever called her’pretty.’

Misty reached out to him but missed her chance. She shook off her blush and ran after him. “Get back here right now, Ash Ketchum!! I’m not done talking yet!!”

Brock laughed. “One day, they’ll finally be honest with themselves!”

"Ash, why is the flower bent?"

The words had meant to be more questioning than accusatory, but the combination of a 45-degree angle stem and petals that resembled blasted firecrackers that had been filled with too much gunpowder was cause for...concern for Misty.

"What's wrong, you said you wanted a flower."

"Not if it's practically ruined!"

Ash thrust a dirt-covered finger towards the cliff he'd obtained the flower from. "I couldn't help it! Trying to climb down that cliff wasn't easy, you know!"

"Then why didn't you just send one of your Pokémon to do it?"

At this a small flush bloomed underneath the patches of dust on his cheeks. "Well, I wanted to be the one to pick it for you."

Softened eyes and a skipped heartbeat came together and Misty felt something lodge in her throat. She glanced back over to the cliff, barely able to make out the small bunch of flowers that Ash had nabbed his from. It swayed softly in the breeze, decidedly devoid of any weird angles on their stems.

She smiled before turning back to Ash. She reached forward to take the flower in her hand, stopping to savor the way her fingertips grazed his.

"Well, I guess it doesn't have to be perfect. Thanks, Ash."

His lips contorted into a wobbled grin, softly scratching his cheek. "I'll get you a perfect one soon. You might have to wait a while, though."

Misty practically etched his promise into her brain, the joy enough to compel her to lean forward and plant a soft kiss on his cheek. His eyes went wide, an undecipherable noise eking out from his throat. Misty grinned, turning back towards the campsite where the others were surely waiting. "When I get that perfect flower, maybe I'll kiss you for real. You might have to wait a while, though."

In all honesty, she shouldn't have been surprised when her words sent Ash sprinting back towards the cliff, loudly proclaiming that the next one would be "even prettier than her." She hadn't bothered to try stopping him; Ash "Headstrong" Ketchum would hardly be deterred. She watched him once again scale the cliffside, holding the bent flower in her hands.

Truth be told, it was already perfect.

This is so weird.

I watched the anime, and I found Serena far more off-putting than Misty, since...she inexplicably had some bizarre backstory with Ash (despite being from Kalos), and that backstory was "she knew him for like five minutes but still has a crush on him for some reason". It doesn't help that instead of talking out her issues with Rhyhorn Racing with her mother like a normal person, she just bitches out her mom. But I figured, hey, a point for growth!

Then that didn't happen. Her crush ended up so overblown and obsessive it didn't feel natural (especially not for a ten year old), and her mother was proven right in the end about Serena giving up on stuff too easily. Also, the person Serena ACTUALLY had chemistry with (Shauna) was shoved aside in order to try and force @mourshipping.

Also the idea that Pokeshipping is dead due to Misty's return in SuMo (years ago) is...a wild take.

Additionally, Misty also returned in Journeys.

Also Ash isn't even in the anime anymore???

Hey dawg, don't worry. I too struggle with rememberin' that it ain't 2017 or '18 or whatever is more than 5 years ago. Counting years, appearances, or remembering what words like theory, or transport, fiction, shipping, Plato's cave or whatever are defined or what they mean is pretty difficult too - I don't get it, it all flies over me head.

Also, Pokemon, especially the anime, last I checked isn't really a romance related show. Beyond a few hints for the sake of teaching kids what falling in love is like, I don't think Ash having a girlfriend, let alone a wife, is ever in the cards. 2024 Fic Writing Wins:

This year was my triumphant (?) return to writing pokeshipping, my first love. Obviously everything is harder when you’re parenting a toddler and working full time, so I didn’t write as much as I wish I could, but it was better than nothing!

I got 1 full fledged fic done this year 🥳:

Pokemon: It’s a Date (pokeshipping) - Ash hears about Misty going on a date and he has to travel across the world and visit her about it lol

I also completed a lot of ficlets here on tumblr, which you can read in my fanfic tag: Car’s Fanfiction

And I also managed to participate in every day of Pokeshipping Week!

2025 Fic Writing Goals:

Write more!! I’d love to do another full fic for ao3 if possible, maybe expanding or continuing some of the ficlets I’ve posted in here, who knows. It all kind of depends on the tiny two year old tyrant who runs my life lol, but here’s hoping! 🤞

Pokeshipping from Pokemon, they are the blueprint and the OTP. Rylan from The Quarry is my most recent ship and before that was Kuzuhina from Danganronpa.

2. First ever ship: Kim and Ron from Kim Possible was the first couple I became completely obsessed with.

3. Last song: dance in the dark by au/ra

4. Last film: The Hey Arnold Movie (got the DVDs to watch bits of the series, perhaps Arnold and Helga predate Kim and Ron since I vaguely remember wanting them together).

5. Currently reading: Poor Things by Alasdair Gray, the movie is coming out and my friend and I are wanting to see it so we're having a little book club

Pokeshipping five sentences, “Splash Down”

I'm so sorry for taking so long Anon, my original idea for this turned out to be a whole other oneshot in itself which I could not find the motivation to write completely. I decided I will chuck that for now, and just finish the request with a fresh start, hope you enjoy reading this.

They are around 17-18 in this scene, travelling in Paldea with a few of their friends. I, of course, did not stick to the 5 sentence rule 🫣🤡

Water always felt like second skin to Misty, she could stand to be in it for hours, diving deep or floating aimlessly, just immersing herself in it freely.

She did not expect others to understand what it was like for her, rather she enjoyed the few moments of solitude her hobby awarded her. Tonight was supposed to be one of those moments, she'd snuck away from where the gang had camped after everyone fell asleep, and found herself a little lake in the forest to explore. As she approached it, a group of Woopers quickly scattered away from the water, hiding themselves in the shrubbery around the lake and attempting to peek at her in secret, which earned them a chuckle from her.

Without too many big movements, Misty removed her jacket to reveal the swimsuit she was wearing underneath. Next, she took off her jean shorts, folding both the items and keeping them softly on the ground to not alert any more wild Pokemon. With a careful step, she dipped her bare feet in the water, feeling its icy temperature against her skin. Just as she liked it, Misty thought before diving in without hesitation.

It was much darker underwater, the moonlight had only illuminated the surface of the lake, and that too quite dimly. But it didn't take long for her eyes to adjust to the darkness, and through her practised breath control, she was able to swim around for a little while, disappointed to not come across any other Water Pokemon. That did explain why the Wooper were hanging around here, however.

She swam back to the surface, cutting through it to finally let go of the breath she was holding and pushing her dripping wet hair out of her eyes. Next time, she reminded herself, she would remember to tie them back.

Just as Misty prepared herself to go in for a second dive, she heard some movement from the bush behind her. She turned her head fast but saw that it was a Wooper running away to find a better hiding place. Smiling, she shook her head and went underwater once again.

This time, she did not make it much farther before she heard the noise of someone splashing down into the water. Panicking, as she had not kept any of her Pokemon on her, Misty halted her descent, instead preparing to turn around and head back up. But before she could get started on that, a pair of familiar arms wrapped themselves around her waist and she felt a hard, bare chest press against her back.

Even before she turned her head, she knew she would come face to face with Ash.

It was impossible, however, for her to get mad at him for scaring her like this when she couldn't afford to open her mouth. She glared at him with all her might, hoping that her turquoise eyes would drill a hole into his head, but Ash remained unfazed, the corner of his lips tugging at a smug smile, if it even was possible to look smug underwater.

Misty decided that the best course of action would be to swim upwards after getting out of Ash's grasp, but he had other plans for them.

In one swift movement, he crashed his lips onto hers.

It was difficult for Misty to describe the next few moments even if she tried.

She surrendered herself to Ash's kiss, grabbing his cheek tightly as his tongue parted her lips to entangle with her own, giving them the chance to share the breath of air that they had both been holding in. She'd always loved the feeling of kissing Ash, but never had she imagined that doing it underwater would make her realise that she even loved the thrill of their hearts beating loudly with their chests pressed together, the sound of their laboured breaths echoing in sync, the taste of salty freshwater mixing in with the taste of Ash's lips.

And then, just as suddenly as Ash had initiated the kiss, their bodies' tolerance to stay underwater ran out. The two of them struggled to swim back up to the surface, their arms draped across each other to ensure that the other was not left behind. When they finally emerged from the water, loudly coughing and gasping for air, Misty was able to recover the best of her senses and turn towards Ash with an accusatory glance.

"Ash Ketchum, what do you think-"

Ash laughed loudly, making a flock of Wattrel flee a nearby tree, squawking and screeching away into the clear night sky. He didn't waste any time and took advantage of her minute of confusion to wrap his arms around her waist and pull her closer to him. He leaned in towards her ear and whispered in a teasing tone-

"Ready for round two?"

Literally all very adorable ships. Amourshipping nad Karmiro are defnitely my favs tho. Quite different ships but both share the fact that they're both painfully not technically cannon lol. Yet I think that's why I love them so much and have felt the need to write fics about them to fix that. Ships that give me pain and anguish are clearly my favs basically lol. I got tagged by @seecarrun, and every time I get tagged, I get a very powerful "Senpai noticed me" feeling inside. LOL

How many works do you have on ao3?

23 if you factor in that one of them has 7 fics, since it's a compilation fic.

What's your total ao3 word count?

53,369, though this is verily outdone by my FFN count, though, not all of my FFN fics are on AO3.

What are your top five fics by kudos?

1. Tender (83 kudos) This was inspired by some artwork that @miyatoriaka did, and I think it's super cute!

2. Third Wheel (73 kudos) I just wanted to write a fic about Ash gushing to Brock about his crush on Misty. LOL

3. Convey (62 kudos) This is, without question, in my personal top 3 of all my Pokeshipping fics, possibly top 2, and even maybe top 1 (the other 2 being Extrasensory and Belonging); regardless, it's one of my favorites. <3

4. Of Density and Immaturity (60 kudos) I wanted to try writing a fic with only dialogue, and this was the result, one I'm quite happy with.

5. Take Two (58 kudos) I wanted to practice kissing; I'd written it, got stuck, written some more, gave up on it, was convinced to not give up on it, and here we are.

Predominantly Pokémon, though I also write for Tales of Symphonia.

I generally do; even if I don't, I read every single one I get, and they make me super happy.

Probably an old fic called Sacrifice. It was actually sort of a personal vent-esque fic, as it was something I'd written in order to help me deal with some similar IRL stuff I was going through.

I think, other than the previously mentioned fic, all my fics have a happy ending. LOL

Do you get hate on fics?

I used to get some hate here and there way back in the day, but not nearly as much these days.

Do you write smut?

I'd written one many years ago, but hadn't done so again, at least not until the Colloyd community got to me. Now I have 3 smutty WIPs in progress. LOL

Do you write crossovers?

Nope, and I don't have any plans to. They're not my thing, as I prefer to say in-universe.

If I have, I'm not aware of it.

Same as above. :P

Have you ever cowritten a fic before?

Sort of? Yes and no, 'cause a friend and I did write something together, but it wasn't a conventional fic.

What's your all time favourite ship?

Pokéshipping, and the only ship that even comes close to how much I love those two is Colloyd.

What's the wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I'm only saying Bridges because it's not only going to be the longest fic I've ever written, but also because, on my list of WIPs, it's saved for last, since I want my skills as a write to be at their peak so I can write it the best I can.

What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue and characterization! (That's what Car put, and it's literally the same for me, so I'm keep it verbatim. LOL)

What are your writing weaknesses?

Describing locations and stuff. I struggle with painting a picture of a location to my readers. I do better with describing thoughts and feelings, not places or such.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I mean, if it fits, go for it.

First fandom you wrote for?

Pokémon, and as long as I'm writing fanfics, it'll probably always be for Pokémon, if nothing else.

Favourite fic you've ever written?

This might seem like an odd choice given my preference for Pokémon and Pokéshipping, but I'm actually going with the Free Day prompt from my Colloyd Week submissions. I don't usually write angst, but this was a lot of fun and a big challenge for me to write, and I still sometimes reread it not only to see my growth, but for inspiration on where I can go.
