Pest Control for Borers in Horticulture Plants
There are several ways to reduce the risk of insect borers in your horticulture plants. Proper horticultural practices can help minimize insecticide drift and other environmental concerns, while biological control methods can lower management costs. Below are some options for controlling borers pest control:
Insect borers
The most common form of insect control for borers is chemical control. Unfortunately, few effective insecticides have been registered for this purpose, and many older chemicals have been withdrawn from the market. Chemical management is usually justified only for newly transplanted trees, or for high-value ornamental trees. Most registered pesticides for woodborers are residual insecticides, which kill both adult woodborers and early larvae. A trunk injection is used to apply these compounds.
Insect borers are known to feed on the bark, trunk, and branches of shade trees. These insects are members of several insect families and are often attracted to weak plants. These insects are considered secondary invaders, as they often indicate other issues with plant health, contributing to the decline of trees. This is why professional pest control is important. Insect borers can damage a variety of plants, including shade trees, fruit trees, and pecan trees.
Signs of a wood borer infestation
There are various signs of a wood borer infestation, such as holes, stains, and frass. Frass is a mixture of excrement and wood fragments that can range from fine to coarse. Borers can also create a wood void known as a gallery, which can be difficult to see. Borer adult beetles will leave behind dead or infested larvae.
Often mistaken for wood worms, wood borers are actually a type of beetle. Known as roundheaded or flatheaded wood borers, they attack structural wood, especially softwoods. These borers also lay their eggs in lumberyards and new home construction. Once the infestation has started, it's difficult to control. The best solution for controlling wood worms is prevention. Fortunately, pesticides and other treatments are available for both types of beetles.
Borers can cause extensive structural damage. Depending on the species, they can cause large, circular holes in wood, often oozing sawdust-like frass. Identifying wood boring insects will help you to prevent further damage. Signs of a wood borer infestation can be difficult to detect, so you should contact a pest control professional as soon as possible. There are many ways to identify wood borers, including identifying the larvae that feed on softwood.
Treatment options
The first line of defense against Old House Borers is moisture control. Bora Care wood preservative treatments can fend off the pests. A cement fiber based wood replacement is also effective. If your old house is not a prime candidate for treatment, you can consider an inspection to determine whether you need to treat your home. During an inspection, you should also look for any signs of damage that might be indicative of a potential infestation.
The adult female borer beetle burrows through timber to lay eggs. These eggs hatch and become grubs, which feed on the starch content of the timber. The larvae readily feed along the grain of timber and build a network of tunnels. They remain out of sight while completing the life cycle, eventually maturing into adult beetles and escaping through the flight hole. A wood borer infestation can be extremely destructive, resulting in the replacement of entire wooden furniture.
Monitoring tools
Monitor Borers with Monitoring tools. If you think you have a problem, you might want to consider monitoring tools for borers, which help control pests and prevent future infestations. Insecticides aren't always effective, and you can make your pest control efforts more effective by monitoring borers' activities. The following list shows some monitoring tools for borers. This list will help you determine the best time to apply pesticides and when the insect is most active.
Bacillus thuringiensis monitoring tools can help prevent damage caused by this insect. The fungus, which is beneficial to plants, has the ability to prevent damage. It can be applied on trees by spraying pesticides. These products are effective for reducing damage caused by borers. The use of monitoring tools for borers will ensure that the appropriate treatment is applied, which may be necessary in certain circumstances.

Recreational Fishing Spots at Durras on the South Coast of NSW, Australia
Durras, near Batemans Bay on the south coast of NSW, is a popular fishing destination for both the serious recreational fishermen or a family on holiday just wetting a line. NSW North Coast Travel Guide
The most popular fishing spots can be broken down into three areas:
Durras Lake. Just a short walk from the caravan parks in either Durras North or South Durras. Flathead and bream are mostly caught just off the boat ramps. If you have a small boat, kayak or canoe, there are four square kilometres of lake to fish in. Durras Lake is part of the Batemans Marine Park and there are two sanctuary zones. No fishing of any sort is allowed in these zones. Sometimes, Durras Lake is open to the ocean and catching prawns is a popular evening activity during summer. North Coast NSW Travel Guide
Durras Beach is 4km long stretching from Point Upright in the north to South Durras. Fish mostly caught include whiting, salmon, tailor, bream and snapper. Large beach rods are mostly used so the skill level required is generally higher than fishing in the lake. Beach worms can also be gathered in the sand by the receding shore line. A high level of skill and dexterity is required to catch them. When Durras Lake is open to the ocean, it is not possible to walk from the north to southern end of the beach.
Point Upright Rock Platform fishing. This is located at the far end of Durras Beach. It is possible to catch snapper, salmon, drummer and many other species off the rock platform at the base of Point Upright. Rock fishing can be extremely dangerous and only experienced persons should indulge in this form of fishing. Proper footwear is essential along with an understanding of tides and weather. Places to Visit in North Coast NSW
Depending upon your skill level, different tackle and baits will be required for each of the different fishing spots described above. Fishing in the Durras area is generally very popular throughout the year.

Dracula of the Deep, Part II: Tips on Fishing for ‘the Fish of 10,000 Minutes’
By Dan Magneson
Blogger’s note: The flathead catfish can live up to 30 YEARS and weigh HUNDREDS of pounds!! Their size and strength make them the stuff of legend but they are very real and very catchable - if you are brave. Tackle this "Dracula of the Deep" with fishery biologist and angler Dan Magneson in part II of his catfish series as he offers fishing tips and tricks for catching this aquatic behemoth. Be sure to read part I here for more fascinating facts about this fish!
Photo: Nightcrawlers are an option for bait when seeking to snag a flathead catfish. Photo credit: in-fisherman.com
Dan’s flathead fishing tips:
1) First of all, patience is more than a virtue when fishing for flatheads, it’s an absolute necessity. While the muskellunge is known as “the fish of 10,000 casts” I have heard the flathead termed “the fish of 10,000 minutes.
2) Autumn fishing for flatheads can be quite good, as the fish are feeding heavily as they “bulk up” their stored body reserves in preparation for the coming winter months. Springtime before the spawn also offers great fishing. Summer is another excellent time, and I especially like to fish during the Perseid Meteor Shower each August, with 60 or more shooting stars an hour being generated by debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle. This meteor shower is so named because they seem to originate from the constellation Perseus. (A bit of trivia: the lyric “I’ve seen it rainin’ fire from the sky” from the late John Denver’s song Rocky Mountain High is speaking specifically of his having viewed the wonder of this light show; he noted there are so many stars on a cloudless, moonless night during this natural spectacle that you can actually see shadows.)
3) Be sure to carefully check the fishing regulations of the particular state in which you plan to fish for determining what may be legally used for bait and which types of bait are prohibited. In those regions across the United States where use of live fish is legal, think large and very, very wiggly. Across the nation, green sunfish are widely regarded as the best possible flathead bait, and bluegill sunfish, bullhead catfish and carp are also excellent choices due to their overall hardiness and ability to remain alive on the hook. Insert the hook into your bait in a manner that precludes hitting vital organs and also the spine. I like to see my rod tip really dancing around, indicating the bait is really raising a ruckus underwater and putting out a lot of throbbing vibration to help attract the attention of a big, hungry flathead. All this commotion also signals to you that your bait is still alive, which is absolutely critical when fishing for big flatheads, which among the catfish clan are uniquely 100% pure predators and have an especially keen affinity for fresh fish. Unlike other species of catfishes which will scavenge, bait that has been dead for a long while just won’t work for the purely predatory flathead. Big gobs of worms and crayfish may also be effective flathead baits.
Photo: Flatheads have big mouths and big appetites so be sure to use large bait. Credit: Dan Magneson/USFWS
4) Bloody “cut” bait from a killed fish may also be successfully used, but it must absolutely be very fresh. Thus you now have a use from the left-overs after filleting your bluegills and crappies.
5) Flatheads may be caught during the daytime if you concentrate on the gnarly snarls they hole up in. They can be enticed into grabbing an easy meal dangled right in front of their mouths. Probing the pocket areas by dangling and jigging a large bait can be a successful method. And within reservoirs, artificial lures such as large, deep-diving crankbaits and swimbaits fished near the bottom may also be effectively used to catch flathead catfish in broad daylight. Lure color in typically turbid flathead waters are less important than choosing a lure that really stirs up a storm underwater as you retrieve the lure. And if you are not getting snagged very often, you likely are not fishing in the types of places most likely to hold big flatheads.
6) With flatheads, there are two types of fishing: first you must fish for your bait, and after catching that you get to fish for flatheads. To catch bait, I use a small, bare jig and coupled with a piece of nightcrawler fished with light tackle. This works well in hooking the bait in just the lip area and thus preventing the bait from being more deeply swallowed, which in turns causes greater traumatic damage and probably eventual premature death of the baitfish.
Photo: Flathead heaven is a big logjam located in deeper water with a slow to moderate current. Credit: Dan Magneson/USFWS
7) Don’t worry about being able to distinguish the difference between the action of the bait versus a bite from a flathead. While flatheads can vary in their manner of taking the bait, flatheads often strike savagely and tend to really slap around and beat up on the bait. You’ll know it when a flathead has located your bait.
8) Flatheads don’t seem to be particularly “tackle-shy” and so don’t be too concerned about concealing the sharp point of the hook. They commonly eat fish with sharp spines and so encountering the point of the hook is all in a night’s work for them.
9) Speaking of night, flatheads seem to be strongly nocturnal and do the great majority of their roaming and foraging then. Night time is decidedly the right time. Radio tagging studies show so little movement during the day that you will think the flathead has died, but if you check at night, that fish may be as much as a mile away from its daytime lair. A friend of a friend who frequently fishes the Missouri River made the observation that “flatheads are a 2 or 3 o’clock in the morning sort of fish,” and from my own experience, that statement is pretty much spot on. Consulting my fishing diary, my earliest flathead action came at 12:53 AM, and the latest at 4:13 AM. Overall, my best flathead fishing seemed to occur from approximately 1:30 AM – 3:45 AM.
10) Since flatheads are so strongly nocturnal in their travels, I avoid use of light as much as possible, and doubly so in shallow and clear water conditions. A lantern sitting close to the water shining bright light down into the water column is bad enough, but I think some of the more powerful head lamps are even worse since your body movements make the light move around. Building a fire near the water likewise probably isn’t a good idea, and especially a big bright beach-type bonfire. None of this is even remotely natural to a prowling flathead. I simply position the rod tip against the sky and observe the silhouette from the seat of my lightweight and low-slung lawn chair that I pack along. Your eyes will adjust to the darkness surprisingly well if you let them, and flathead tackle is large enough that you can handle it in minimal light conditions with little difficulty. Use only a tiny light, and use that only when kneeling low, with your back to the river to block most of the light. White light draws insects ‘til Hell won’t have it, so try instead to use a yellow light. If you can only find white, try taking a Brach’s butterscotch candy wrapper and taping that into place over the lens. And remember to tiptoe very lightly about your fishing spot, akin to moving in an infant’s bed room in a manner trying not to wake the sleeping baby.
Photo: The author Dan Magneson with an 8.5 pound flathead catfish.
11) Flatheads are strong and tenacious, which dictates the coupling of secure knots with sturdy fishing tackle: a rod with plenty of backbone, a beefy and tough high-capacity reel, and high-quality and high-test fishing line attached to a hook that has been well-honed to a very sharp point. Myself, I use a Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger rod, an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 7001i reel (I’m a southpaw) spooled with 100 lb. test Power Pro braided fishing line. I attach a 3-ounce slip-style bell sinker above a saltwater ball-bearing barrel swivel. From there, I use 3 – 4 feet of 200 lb. test Power Pro braided fishing line for leader material, and attach a size 9/0 Gamakatsu Live Bait Heavy-Duty Saltwater hook. I like to thread the hook through the bait fish in a manner that throws it off balance, so that it is constantly struggling to right itself.
12) A very handy tip: try to select a fishing reel with a “clicker” mechanism, which provides an audible alarm that line is being pulled off the reel. I also prefer fishing rods of single-piece construction as I regard them as being stronger than two-piece, take-down rods. All else being equal, I favor white fishing rods at night because they show up better in faint light.
13) Finally, tread lightly upon this precious resource. Flatheads can take many years to achieve large trophy size, and so practice your “CPR” which in this case means “Catch –Photograph-Release.” While brutish flatheads put up a bruising battle that only intensifies as you bring them to shore, I find conversely that they are remarkable calm, docile and gentle to handle once vanquished. When fishing along a shallow enough shoreline, I wear knee-high rubber boots and enter the shallow water with a tailor’s flexible measuring tape (readily found in sewing supply stores), getting a length and girth to later convert to pounds of weight via conversion charts found online. This avoids removing the fish from the water, which is hard on both you and the fish. Everything that comes into contact with the fish should be wetted first, to better preserve the fish’s protective slime layer and so in turn further enhancing post-release survival.
14) Exhibit class and common courtesy toward other anglers, and pack out all of your trash – and if necessary, even that left by others. Always leave your fishing spot in better condition than you found it.
15) And surprises while flathead fishing are never in short supply. I know of a fisherman whose flathead turned out to be something else entirely: His clicker indicated line paying out, but the line was going into the willows away from the river itself. It turned out a raccoon had waded out and scooped up the bait and was in the process of having it as a midnight snack!
16) Warning! Flathead fishing is highly addictive and most definitely habit-forming and also may interfere with your established circadian rhythms and normal sleeping patterns.

Guide to Garage Door Opener Repair
Safety always comes first – this is non-negotiable. That is why garage door openers have evolved from merely serving as protection for our vehicles against the elements to providing safety from security threats to life and property. As an indispensable part of our life, we cannot afford to ignore obvious signs of wear and tear in our garage door openers and attend to it only when it stops working. We need them in tip-top shape 24/7.
In chain-driven garage door openers, one of the tell-tale signs of an impending repair would be worn-out plastic gears. Repairing these is quiet easy only takes a short while with some household tools, and is easy-on-the-pocket too. Plus, you get to prevent possible damage to other garage door components which usually happens when simple repairs like this is ignored. Below are the step-by-step of changing those plastic gears.
Preparing for the Repair
As in all electric appliances, make sure your door opener is not plugged in. Use the emergency release lever to close the door manually. Take off the cover of your garage door opener.
Checking Nylon Gear for Signs of Wear and Tear
If the plastic or nylon gear has worn edges, they are screaming for replacement. Calling your manufacturer first for the replacement part would be the safest thing to do as they can provide you with the spare part matched to your garage door openers make and model. If they are unable to help, shop online for it. The web offers wide choices of garage door openers at affordable price ranges. If you want it faster and simpler, then just make a quick stop at your local store. Once you find the appropriate gear kit for your door opener, (note: a gear kit provides a couple of nylon gears and comes with some washers, a grease tube along with an instructional) you are ready for the job.
Get Your Tools Ready
Replacing the gear usually requires the following tools; a hammer, flathead screwdriver, ¼ inch, 3/8 inch and 5/16 inch nut drivers or sockets, 1/8 inch Allen wrench and 5/32 inch punch. With everything organized, you can now do a handyman’s job:
Carefully free the circuit board by taking screws off and letting the board dangle. It will give you more work space.
The chain on the tensioning rod also needs to be out of your way. To loosen it, with a wrench, work on the nut on the rod while holding the chain in place with a pair of pliers or another wrench.
Now you can unscrew and remove the gear assembly out of the unit.
Then to separate the helical gear from the shaft, use the hammer and lightly tap on the pin keeping in its place. If this does not work, apply some WD-40 on the pin and leave it for a few seconds then try again.
Using a hex wrench, attempt to detach the worm gear from the motor shaft by removing the screws on the collar. Take off the gears and washers and remove the remaining screws on the motor.
Now you are ready for reassembly. Reassemble the worm gear and motor shaft using the new worm gear. Put in place the new helical gear and apply a small amount of grease on it.
After the replacement, consult your manual for directions on tightening back the chain and do so. Put back the cover of the door opener
Enjoy your newly repaired door opener.
Not the Gears
In some instances, the problem is not in the gears. Checking out the article on the web, “Troubleshooting the Most Common Garage Door Opener Problems,” may provide some useful hints.
When to Seek Professional Help
Should you find no obvious damage to parts upon your inspection, it might be time to hire a professional for a more thorough check-up. Bear in mind, though, that the cost of hiring a professional might just be at par with the price of some brand new garage door openers. That being the case, use your better judgment. Consider your door’s age. Consider your door’s age. If it is more than a decade, you already got your money’s worth out of that mechanism, so maybe buying a new one would be the better alternative.

Is one thing missing?
Regrettably, jobs are a real possibility for many people. Also is city and suburban living, dreary weather, pollution, traffic... However it does not need to be all there's to existence. Try something which puts you in contact with who you're really. Try something elemental. Try something which soothes your soul.
Try Fraser Island.
Fraser Island is not just a tropical paradise. It is a unique and splendid mixture of Australia's wealthy natural heritage, its earthy roots, its wholesome magnificence, and it is refreshingly simple essentials. It's an opportunity to touch the fine sands, to drift within the temperate water, to bask under the sun that appears all yours... It is your opportunity to partake of the existence that many Australians have forgotten.
Spend per week on as well as in turquoise waters, per week without footwear using the sand involving the toes, per week fishing and possibly living off your catch. Your point of view will not help but change.
It isn't only fleeting appreciation. It is something you tote around.
Fraser might help help remind you that you are not your work. How important would be the forms and also the filing, the conferences and memorandums? You can study a great deal with regards to you whenever you remove everything that do not matter.
And extremely... can there be much better method to experience this epiphany compared to paradise?
Fraser Island is really a paradise, whichever way your perception. In the southern finish from the Great Barrier Reef, along with a short boat ride from Hervey Bay in South-East Queensland, Fraser is 124 km from tip to foot and 16 km over the middle. At 163,000 hectares, it is the world's greatest sand island.
Obviously, that does not mean it's all regulated just sand. Not with a lengthy shot! The entire island is laced with very obvious freshwater streams, and deep night time blue freshwater ponds. Actually, with more than 40 freshwater ponds - it's the place to find 1 / 2 of the earth's known 'perched' ponds. Additionally, it has a dazzling diversity of plants and creatures (including Australia's purest strain of dingo), as well as an amazing number of spectacular landscapes, from 120 km of non-stop tropical beach to dense and towering rainforest, weathered headland to ochre gorge, inspiring coves to wandering dunes, eerie mangroves to wind-blown salt pans.
In addition, you've the selection of accommodation, so that you can choose your personal degree of 'communion with nature'. From 4½ star luxury they resort to rental retreats to motels and units, to the great 'ole campground. Whether you are a sucker for a little bit of pampering, or you are perfectly aware of a tent along with a fire around the beach, Fraser is a superb provider.
And great accommodation is only the start... The area boasts average temperatures of 29°c in summer time and 22°c in the winter months, so it's no wonder that outside activities feature conspicuously around the agenda. Adrenalin addicts and dedicated sunbathers alike will understand the huge selection available. From sunrise to sunset (and beyond), almost always there is something for everybody. The only issue is selecting! Fishing, 4-wheel-driving, eating, sailing, bird-watching, plant-walking, swimming, eating, whale & dolphin-watching, shipwreck exploration, eating, beauty therapy, massage, lazing under the sun, eating, beach volleyball, tennis, cricket, eating, canoeing, sailboarding, snorkelling, eating... And pointless to state, a couple of quiet drinks will make their way to the agenda too...
With the much to provide, it's no wonder that the Fraser Island was initially referred to as K'gari - or 'Paradise' - by local Aboriginal peoples.
Fraser Island is really "paradise for everybody"!
Four Wheel Driving
As being a sand island, the only real mode of land transport is 4WD. Obviously, for a lot of visitors, this is the primary attraction. 4WD enthusiasts from all across the globe visit Fraser Island to pit their and themselves vehicles from the rugged terrain found all around the island. In the hard-packed seashore towards the shifting dune towards the forests from the interior, Fraser Island is the perfect 4WD location.

Or maybe you want to get working for yourself, you are able to employ a 4WD for any day, and enjoy a little bit of quiet exploring.
Whichever option you select, though, there's a couple of 'ground rules' you need to observe. Recall the risks of driving around the beach.
