I throughly enjoyed doing this series! When I initially started (with the drawing on the right) I wanted to do something special for Nigerian Independence Day. Instead of searching countless hours for the perfect picture (or recycling an image lol) I decided to make my own. Then it became a series. Our crowns (head wraps) are regal, signify strength, and power. In Igbo it is called "Ichafu". In Yoruba it is called "Gele". And I wanted these drawings to represent all those qualities. I added the touch of gold and sparkle from Photoshop because after all we are made of magic. Solange's (@saintrecords ) ⛅"Cranes in the Sky"⛅, is like that lullaby that most Black women needed to hear, but never got the chance to when we were little. It expresses the very emotions we were taught to be percieved as weak. It was therapeutic. We needed to hear that everything was going to be alright...and that we are vulnerable. That we are here. We carried these burdens, our despressions, our fears, etc. Thank you Solange for explaining our frustrations ever so beautifully and melodious.
