Details I noticed in Nimona pt 2
In the opening narration, when we first see Gloreth in the scrolls there are words behind her that read "Salva nos" which translates to "save us." When she stabs the monster there are words that read "mori" which translates to "Death."
One of the newspapers on Ballister's innocence wall reads "Black Heart Out There"
When Nimona bangs on the tower door you can see her shadow under the door
The first time we see the circular saw in the tower it's off. Then it turns on just so Nimona can lean on it. Then it's off again
Nimona wears a black pair of glasses when she asks Ballister about the job while reading the newspaper. She drops them on the table but wears them again as an otter after the second fight at the Institute
When Ballister is screaming "Murder him, murder her, murder everyone!" Nimona sees Ambrosius first. She looks between Bal and him a few times before Bal notices
Back at their hideout, when Bal looks over the couch to see Nimona cooking, he looks around like 'uhhh...' a few times
The item Nimona classified as most deadly was a HUMONGOUS chainsaw. The chainsaw gets moved around the tower a bit but ends the movie on a top shelf in the alcove
In the top left of Nimona's updated murder wall, there's a drawing she did of a design for Ballister's arm. It's shooting fire and is labeled, "Literal firearm." Next to it is a self portrait she did
When Nimona suggests maybe there's nothing outside the wall before they go to the market, Ballister blinks and actually considers it for a second before deciding that's wrong
Nimona's right (our left) fang is bigger than the other
The sign in the subway projecting the train arrival times said that the C to Marketplace arrived in one minute, the Q to Castle Cross arrives in six minutes, and the 6 to Victory Ave. arrived in ten minutes
When Ballister tries to convince Nimona it's "easier to be a girl" during their subway ride, there's a poster behind him that says, "Put Your Faith in the Institue." I love how unsubtle they were with their subtext in this movie lol
When they go up into the subway air vents to escape Ambroisus, Nimona beats her chest once in gorilla form
The highlights in the squire's eyes are pentagons. I know ppl have done metas abt what the eye highlights mean but idk how pentagons fit into there
While trying to stuff the squire's unconscious body into their trunk, Ballister drops him. On his head
The bandage that Bal uses to heal Nimona's knee is the bottom of his cape, we see him tear it off while she's talking. Also the bandage has increasing amounts of blood on it as he wraps it. It's still not very much but it does increase the longer it's on there
After coming back to the tower from the second fight at the Institute, Nimona almost hits Bal in the face with the door but he catches it at the last second
On top of the wooden case where the Director was hiding Ballister's real sword is a huge old book. It's in a glass case that she rests her hands on while talking to "Ambrosius." Again, I love how obvious they were being with this movie; she's hiding the weapon that she used to kill, frame, and exclude people to preserve oppressive tradition under smth that looks exactly like a medieval Bible. They were not subtle lol
When "Ambrosius" dies, there's blood on his armor and the sword. Not very much but you can see it
One of the citizens watching the news about the Director's confession is an old lady. She's got a couch, a tv stand, and two framed pictures of chickens on her wall. That's it; the rest of the room, like behind the TV (which is in the middle of the room for some reason??), is completely empty. I just thought her chicken pictures were funny lol
When Bal and Ambrosius are arguing in the Antlered Serpent, Bal says, "You know what? You are so full of-" And then he gets cut off by the waiter, so we'll never get to hear him finish that sentence
Also in that scene, there's a portrait of the Queen behind Ambrosius but nothing behind Ballister. Again, they're using the environment/background to show where characters' loyalties lie
Nimona's got a little pink and white circle on the bottom of her boots. You can see it when she wakes up on the couch and when she jumps off the balcony in the Director's office. I can't get a good image of it but I'm guessing it's some kind of logo
In the flashback with Gloreth, Nimona is pretty shy and reserved until she can use her shapeshifting. Then she's chatty, she's fully engaged in the games, and she just looks so much happier. She knew she could trust Gloreth and wasn't worried about hiding a key part of her identity. She shapeshifted and then she was free (ignore me crying)
When Nimona turns into the big shadow monster at the climax, the initial transformation destroys the well where she met Gloreth. I'm sure there's some symbolism in there but I'm leaving that for someone else to figure out lol
When Todd crashed his hoverscooter, he went all the way through the billboard. I thought he just hit it but no, he made a giant hole
When Ballister shows up to the city for the final sequence, the "A New Era of Heros" billboard is burning behind his right (our left) shoulder. Again there's probably symbolism in there but I'm leaving it to someone else
When Bal's sword hits the ground after he drops it off Gloreth's statue, it turns off. It's the first time in the movie where it hasn't been glowing. It really drove home that he's done with the Institute. He's not carrying it, it's not even on. He's helping Nimona
Ambrosius tries to carry an unconscious/severely injured person off the wall as Nimona's flying at it but he puts the person's full weight on his injured shoulder. Bc he's big brain like that
The scene where Bal and Ambrosius kiss is actually on top of the wall. Maybe that was obvious, but it took me forever to realize. They've turned it into a park and have made it accessible to the public. Also it looks over the entire Kingdom and it's HUGE! I've seen people worrying about how they fit all those people in the walls but it's actually ginormous

The Oscars are upon us and thank god. This year's awards season felt prolonged for some reason, like extra long. It's a thing I look forward to with all the red carpets but also seeing what wins and discussing what should have won but somehow it felt like it lasted forever this year. Maybe it's just me, who knows, but a few movies seemed to have a death grip on the entire conversation this year. My take on 2023 was that it was sort of an interesting year in that it's mean was strong but it didn't move me. A lot of years there are one or two movies that are such favorites of mine that I know I will return to them again and again. Movies that hit my heart. Last year it was Aftersun, a few years before that Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Little Women, and so on. This year, assembling my top 10 list I found that there was nothing that I couldn't wait to pop in again but I had trouble keeping the list to just 10 movies. It was a weird situation where if you looked at my list and told me my ten should be one and my one should be ten I'd probably agree with you. Anyway, with the Oscars coming here is what I think of the big awards. Best Actor I don't care. There are three candidates that if they won I'd be glad and I think the most likely to win are two of them so that's fine. I think Ryan Gosling should win for Supporting actor but he probably won't but I won't be heart broken cause I saw all the performances and they are good and the best supporting actor this year wasn't even nominated so who gives a fuck? Ditto best Actress and supporting actress but my pick would probably be Emma Stone for actress. Best Picture I think Zone of Interest or Poor Things would probably be my pick of those nominated, both are amazing pieces of cinema but the first can be like doing your homework in the sense that it is a deeply unpleasant experience that I think we should all go through from time to time. Past Lives and Poor Things are very rewatchable and will grow with each viewing so I think have the most legs for posterity other than the obvious Barbie and Oppenheimer. As for Oscars snubs, the stuff they basically ignored but shouldn't have because it's better than some of what made it in no orders is: May December, Asteroid City, Return to Seoul, Wes Anderson like ever, Zac Efron, CHARLES MELTON, Park Ji-Min, Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, I guess maybe just Asian Actors in general, great job Oscars. Oh, and you know, shout out to A Thousand and One which probably shouldn't be nominated, it wasn't perfect but is the sort of flawed that made it somehow far more compelling than a lot of the nominees this year. Oh, and Four Daughters should win for documentary because it is movie and fascinating and takes a tact I have never seen a documentary do before. Award moving the medium forward.
Anyway, all that is a long way of saying I am posting Margot Robbie today who should have been nominated for an Oscar this year. It isn't the single greatest snub of all time but she was in a movie that helped save Hollywood for at least one more year and did a phenomenal job in a role that I think literally she is the only person who could have played it. Acting is so much more than the words you say and your body and physicality is part of it and there is something to be said about someone who can both look like Barbie and act at a high level. Despite the fact that I do not feel the same level of lust for Margot Robbie the rest of the world does I cannot help but admire her as an actor. She is, without a doubt, someone who goes for it in a way very few movie stars do. She acts in everything i have ever seen her in as if this is her one shot to get into Hollywood and if she half asses it her career is over. This is such a level of effort from a movie star who often settle into a persona. Not because they can't act but because a persona is more profitable and better for their career but also yes, it is easier. Easier and safer and she never, ever does that. Thing is, awards are often about what is distinguished more than it is about what is accomplished and playing a toy is not distinguished playing say, dead people is. Now, you'll hear people say awards don't matter and they are nonsense and that's all true except also they do matter and they are important. Which is why this isn't a massive snub because Margot Robbie is going to be just fine but here is why they are important. Every single movie nominated for the Oscars this year is about to get a second life. It will have more eyeballs on it than it would otherwise, both in theaters and on streaming. Artists tend to want their art to be seen, it's very unsatisfying to create and have it wither in obscurity. It will also make them more money so they can make more art but also so they are rewarded for their labor. Finally, everyone likes to be recognized for their work. Anyone here who does a job knows how awful it is to toil away in obscurity without so much as a thanks or recognition of your effort. Which is why you see people like me worry about who wasn't nominated as much as anything else. So they don't matter in the sense that who wins the Oscar has no impact on what is or isn't a great movie but it does matter in the sense that it matters to the people working on it and it matters on how it gets recognition for work. So, Margot Robbie could at least win as a producer but I think her role was good enough she should be nominated as an actress again and think she largely wasn't not because the field was so crowded but because she made a movie about a toy and thus we've seen almost no actual awards for Barbie. Enjoy the Oscars, enjoy these pics of Margot. Today I want to fuck Margot Robbie.

The Haunted Atlas
Sawston Hall - Cambridgeshire, England
52°07′13″N / 0°10′21″E
The ghosts of Queen Mary Tudor (Mary I) and a Lady in Gray are said to haunt this 16th-century home in Cambridgeshire, England. The haunting appears to be tied to an incident which happened on July 7-8, 1553.
Mary Tudor (1516-58) was the daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. Because of her parents' divorce, she was forced to declare herself illegitimate and renounce the Catholic Church. She was later absolved by the pope. In 1553 Mary became involved in a struggle for the throne of England. Edward Vl, Henry VIll's son by his third wife, Jane Seymour, was dying of tuberculosis, and was persuaded by John Dudley, the duke of Northumberland, to confer the crown on Dudley's daughter-in-law, Lady Jane Grey, who was Henry VIlI's grandniece. The people, however, rallied behind Mary Tudor.
The duke attempted to imprison Mary. She fled, and on the night of July 7, 1553 she was taken in and hidden at Sawston Hall by the occupants, a family named Huddleston. At dawn on July 8, Northumberland's men approached the house, and Mary escaped disguised as a milkmaid. In revenge, the men burned the house down.
Lady Jane Grey's reign lasted but nine days. Mary Tudor was crowned queen and Lady Jane Grey was imprisoned and then beheaded.
In gratitude to the Huddlestons, Mary—who later was called "Bloody Mary" for her persecution of the Protestants—rebuilt Sawston Hall. A portrait of her still hangs in the Great Hall. Her ghost is seen gliding serenely through the house and moving at great speed through the gardens. The second haunting specter, the Lady in Gray, appears in the Tapestry Room, where she knocks three times at the door and then floats across the room.
Tumblr media
Legend has it that Mary slept in the Tapestry Room; it is unlikely, though the four-poster bed there did survive the fire. However, those who have spent the night in "Mary's Room" report being disturbed by phantoms and sounds of rapping at the door and someone fiddling with the latch. Nocturnal tappings also have been reported in a bedroom nearby. Sounds of a spinet and a girl laughing drift through the house.

Turn of the Tide, Call of the Sea (2/?)
Tumblr media
Description: Aemond and Helaena reflect on the party, and their newly developing feelings for the mysterious strangers from the sea.
Previous chapter
Aemond was furious, he was confused, he was insulted, and he was enamored. Truly and completely enamored.
Alyra Hawthorne had not only managed to win his heart in a matter of hours, but she also robbed, and knocked him out cold. He had to have her, no one but that—temptress, that sweet voiced, golden eyed woman who stole his heart with a single line of flattery, would he accept at his side.
His sister wasn’t fairing much better, she sat at her window, and sighed, drawing the portrait of a man over and over again.
“Do you know this man, or is he one of the characters from your novels?” He asked, leaning over to see what she was drawing.
Helaena snapped her sketchbook closed. “That is none of your business, brother, have you made any progress on finding your future bride?”
Aemond sat beside her with a groan. “The Hawthorne family owned a small perfumery, that went up in flames seven years ago, consuming their family home. Her father and brother died in the flames, but Lady Alyra and her mother were declared missing. No one has heard from either of them since the fire.”
“Incorrect.” Came their grandfather’s voice, followed by the heavy thud of papers landing.
Aemond pulled the top sheet. “Jacaerys Targaryen, wanted for piracy, theft, arson, murder, bootlegging, and a long list of other crimes. What does this have to do with Lady Alyra?”
Otto cleared his throat and pointed to the next wanted poster.
There staring back at Aemond sketched in black ink was Alyra. The artist gave her a roguish smile, her eyes gazing out at him, and her crimes were listed out the same as Jacaerys’.
“You desire to marry a criminal, a filthy pirate.” Otto growled, tapping Alyra’s picture harshly.
Helaena had the poster for Jacaerys in her hands, and the light left her eyes as she scanned it.
“Clearly, I had no knowledge of her crimes until now.” Aemond said, his eye tracing her features, lingering on her lips. They were so soft against his, and the scent of her, honeysuckle, and lavender, overwhelmed his senses. He’d been able to hang onto one of her gloves and kept it tucked away in his desk drawer.
She was a pirate? His sweet girl, who danced with him, who kissed him with such passion? The woman who stole his signet ring, obviously issuing a challenge to him. To come and find her, to claim her as his own.
Helaena took the poster up to her room and sat on her bed, staring at it. This was her love, the man in her dreams. Could she have seen his portrait before? No, he’d aged as she had, unless…
She hated when she had her visions, they left her weak and unsteady, but her mother thought that perhaps they were signs of greater power. To her, they were a curse, a storm cloud that hung over her head, ruining any chance of living in blissful ignorance.
She pulled out her sketchbook and compared the drawings, a perfect match. Except that she had added the freckles across his nose, and the way the corners of his lips would quirk up whenever he saw her. She traced his features with her fingertips, at least she had a name for him, the dreams were odd like that, whenever he tried to tell her his name the sound would be muffled as if he were underwater.
“Jacaerys Targaryen, scourge of the seas.” She whispered, trying to imagine the kind man she’d come to know as a cold-blooded killer. Her mind couldn’t do it, instead she was reminded of all the times he held her as she cried or spent hours entertaining her with stories of his family.
She tucked the poster into her sketchbook and began to get ready for bed.
She was on a beach, a secluded one, tucked into a cove he’d told her. He sat waiting for her in their normal spot, under the shade of the palm trees.
“My flower.” He called to her, standing, and brushing the sand from his pants, and starting towards her.
“You’re a pirate.” She said, remaining firmly in place even as he reached for her.
His eyebrows furrowed. “Why do you say that?”
“My grandfather brought your wanted poster in, along with Lady Alyra’s.”
Jacaerys gave her a sheepish smile. “My apologies for Alyra’s behavior, but she’s not going to give your brother’s ring back.”
Helaena shook her head. “How could you keep such a secret from me? How could you not tell me you were real?”
“My sweet flower, I never denied being flesh and bone, you refused to believe me.” He took her hands in his and pressed quick kisses to her knuckles. “I did not tell you that I was a pirate because I didn’t believe it mattered, I enjoyed being able to be your love. Not Captain Jacaerys, the heir, the scourge of the seas.”
Helaena melted as his lips brushed over her skin, bringing to mind their passionate embrace only a week ago. “How will we ever meet now? My family will never let me meet with a pirate.”
Jacaerys lead her over to their spot. “I’m currently working on a way to see you. It will have to wait though, my ship left Oldtown a week ago, and we’re headed to the eastern coast to pick up a shipment.” His voice was apologetic, and she let him pull her into his arms. “I’m sorry Helaena, if I had known you were in Oldtown that night I would have come and stolen you away.”
Helaena turned her head, so he couldn’t see the pink tinting her cheeks. “My brothers would’ve hunted you down.”
Jacaerys laughed. “I’d like to see them try and catch me. The Vermax is the fastest ship on the narrow sea.”
Names and information flowed easier between them now that their names had been revealed in the waking world. It was nice, she enjoyed hearing the way his tongue curled around her name, practically caressing each syllable.
“My brother intends to marry your Lady Alyra, or well he did, I’m not sure how he feels now. He truly detests pirates.”
“I shouldn’t hold a place for him on my crew, then?” He teased, nuzzling his nose against hers.
She giggled, and shook her head, the image of Aemond on a pirate ship was a wildly humorous one. “I do not believe he’d be very happy to even hear of that offer.”
Jacaerys’ back was against the tree, and she sat sideways in his lap, head resting against his chest. He brushed a lock of her hair behind her ear. “A pity. Luckily for me, I have his sister as a consolation prize.”
“Ah, but you do not have me, not yet.”
“I beg of you, don’t remind me; it’s torture to wake up each morning without you in my arms.”
“I feel the same, I am so cold when I wake, and you are not beside me.” She lamented, intertwining their fingers. Now, knowing that he was real, that some power connected them, would make waking up each morning much harder.
“Hold out hope, Helaena, soon we shall be together.” He promised, holding their joined hands to his heart.
She's shaken awake by her mother, whose warm brown eyes are filled with regret. “Your grandfather wishes to speak with you.”
Helaena stood outside her grandfather’s office, picking at the embroidery on her sleeves.
“Come in Helaena.”
She walked in and immediately noticed how distressed her grandfather looked. His eyes are sunken, his desk is disorganized, and a bottle of whiskey sits on the floor beside his desk.
“Is something amiss?”
“That Targaryen bitch has raided another one of our ships, someone must marry and boost our coffers.”
“Aegon, is of marrying age.” She reminded him, fearful of her grandfather’s next words.
“I’ve already decided. You will marry Lord Tobias Hawkings. He’s wealthy, his wife passed two years ago, and he has no children. He has even agreed to forgo your dowry in exchange for your arrival within the month.”
Helaena had to sit, or she feared she’d faint. “I wish to stay here. I beg of you, do not send me away.” Tears ran down her face as she begged her grandfather not to ship her off, sending her even further away from Jacaerys.
“He is paying good money for you, Helaena; I will not have your childish emotions prevent our family from thriving.” He snapped, turning his back to her.
“I will marry the Lannister boy, I swear, I will cause no trouble, just please do not make me marry that lecher.”
She’d met Tobias Hawkings once before; he was callous and leered in a way that caused even Aegon to step in between them. She shouldn’t be surprised, he’s the man who’d bought her like cattle at an auction. But no, she would marry the Lannister’s son, they’d made the suggestion to Helaena’s mother the night of the party, surely it wasn’t too late now.
“It’s too late to change your mind, Helaena, they’ve already withdrawn their offer.”
She buried her face in her hands. “Please, if you have ever loved me, do not do this.”
Her grandfather stood and placed a hand on her shoulder. “It is because I love you and the rest of our family that I must do this.”

271 - Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Patreon Selects)
Tumblr media
Our Patreon Selects episodes continue this week with a pick from Audrey: the beloved 2019 lesbian romance Portrait of a Lady on Fire. The film launched at the Cannes Film Festival, winning the Best Screenplay prize and skyrocketing director Céline Sciamma to the names of most beloved contemporary directors. However, when the Oscar race began, France instead chose to submit Ladj Ly's Les Misérables for the International Feature race. Sciamma's film still gained feverish fandom on the fall festival circuit and even more critical raves, but ultimately distributor Neon focused its awards campaign energies on fanning the flames of the Parasite moment.
This episode, we talk about the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and Portrait's delayed platform release that got abbreviated by COVID. We also discuss Adèle Haenel's stunning enigmatic performance, the film where Noémie Merlant falls in love with a circus ride, and the case for Claire Mathon in Best Cinematography.
Topics also include Louis Ironson's poster's disease, 2019 films directed by women, and the 2022 Sight and Sound poll.
