I made a thing.

It's a riff on this meme, referencing the recent hostility towards NSFW creations and creators.

As an amateur marketing wizard, let me tell you why Tumblr isn't growing into the social media juggernaut Auttomatic wants it to be:

1. That isn't a thing anymore. Get with the times, Pappy. If you're not TikTok or YouTube, or the angry resthome that is Facebook, you aren't going to make money from this. Things have coalesced. You are either making all of the money or you don't get any. This is the market.

2. Their Big Idea was Live, a streaming thing they contracted another company to run for them. The Meet Group is doing good as a streaming provider. ...Tumblr is not a streaming platform. You can't just graft an unrelated thing onto another thing and ???, profit. They might as well have tried to turn it into Ebay.

They picked streaming because streaming is hip with the kids. ...On platforms that exclusively do streaming, and have robust tools to do that and promote streamers. Like Meet Group websites. People aren't looking for a cheap imitation of that, they just go to those to do that.

Sure, it could, theoretically, be a fun bonus thing. But it isn't, it is a weird thing most of us don't like or want here. Neither outcome was ever going to turn Tumblr around. Because, again, we can all do better streaming elsewhere. Why didn't anyone know this?

3. Ever since the Pornocalypse, the Tumblr base (it seems to me) trends young and rather disengaged from the platform. Teenagers drop in every week or so, look around, and move on. How were you going to generate revenue from these people with pay options? They don't have money, and what they have, they ain't spending here.

Even those of us who are here an unhealthy amount to do gay fandom stuff are in a groove with this platform where it is no-obligation. I pay for it to kill most ads, but I am an old man with a job who is bad with my money. I'm the exception. If the core demographic is people with no money, who see little benefit in paying for a thing that is bearable as a free product...they aren't going to give you money. That's the market. What was supposed to happen to change any of that? They didn't bring in older people, and they didn't offer any vital paid benefits. What...what was the plan?

4. We are known internet-wide as the sad gay website of sad gays and their sad gay blorbos. We are mined by them occasionally for our funnest stupidity, but that is this site's brand at this point. Trying to make Tumblr cool and profitable is like trying to turn your drag bar into a competator of Chick-fil-A. It isn't going to happen unless you radically alter your legacy brand. And when you do that, you immediately drive off the core patrons you have. I don't know how you fix that.

Conservatives and moms already have Facebook. They don't need Tumblr. And Tumblr is too Tumblr to be anything else. That is all it is.

Perhaps this platform is just inherently doomed to be exactly what it is, a giant queer money pit. Yahoo certainly thought so -- that's why they dumped us.

It sucks that Auttomatic can't make us profitable. And they're under no obligation to keep trying. But they shouldn't be surprised. We're fun at parties. But you can't take us home.

When someone necro's your ancient art and you get a recommendation from tumblr about a drawing from before the pornocalpyse that has been "hidden" due to said pornocalypse. Sad part is, it wasn't even lewd, just suggestive.

All the more to remind me how much this site has gone downhill since then.

So, here's my rant. I keep away from Tumblr and everyone I used to chat and follow has gone away. Like not using Tumblr anymore.

It's a different place everytmie this happens and we all have to start over again. Oh well this isn't a social network after all. It's DESIGNED to make you talk to your lonely self, and foe strangers to absent-mindedly react to your content without going deeper than just the next scroll.

Tons of programmatic spam, after a few minutes of scrolling the ads are indistinguishable from the spam, or the authentic content. I guess it makes business sense because how else are you gonna make money?

Oh well, thank your for reading my rant, if you got this far. Turns out this post was genuine, but nobody will ever know. maybe a digital archeologist from the future may notice..

OK so you know how after the 2018 pornocalypse happened and thousand of people left tumblr, and ever since then they’re occasionally talking about how this site is dead? All this while me, you, the girl reading this, we all are using it it mostly the same way we ever did, and if anything the quality has only gone slightly up?

It’s very much like that.

Every single person I am following who was using twitter regularly under the previous Jack-Parag-TLA-bin Salman management is still very much using twitter under Musk management. The people who left are mostly insufferable journos and journo-adjacents who are angry that the consent manufacturing machine broke.

It’s like if Wil Wheaton and prokopetz left tumblr right now. The effect on your dashboard would be something between “negligible” and “a slight upgrade”.

it's really funny how twitter basically wound up too big to fail by having every single international politician and journalist creating nearly unstoppable equilibrium through addiction, to the point where it shutting down was unthinkable and any number of governments would probably have bailed it out

What happens next to Spanking Theatre?

Tumblr is destroying what once made it so great.

This is a massive shame, and a source of personal sadness. For several years, Tumblr was a community I was honoured to be part of, the support of those kind readers who stumbled across my early work encouraged a period of extraordinary creativity.

Those stories will live on, if not at a Tumblr address, then someone else. In its place, we’ll build something even better. I shall shortly start deleting any posts featuring images of nudity, and convert this site into a text-based blog. This might save this blog from deletion, but it’s likely erotica posts will be made private, disappearing from your feed, ultimately to become inaccessible.

So, for erotic content creators like myself, it is time to plan our migration.

If you��d like to continue following Spanking Theatre, I’d recommend you do the following:

1. Years ago I created a backup blog at spankingtheatre.wordpress.com, the archive of all my past posts will continue to live there. I’d encourage you to bookmark it, and if you’re a Wordpress user, you can follow me there. I just need to tidy up the navigation. I should start posting new content there in the new year.

2. If you’re a Twitter user, you can follow me at @spankingtheatre - this is a good channel for news, announcements and content I’ve retweet, I tend to focus on the psychology of eroticism, sex-ed and sexual confidence.

An Importance Notice

This is an important notice for readers of this blog, especially those who don’t have a Tumblr account.

As of July 5th, Tumblr is going to change the visibility of adult blogs. This will mean unless you log in, you will be unable to access them. You can read an explanation of the changes here. If you run a NSFW blog, you’ll probably already have received a notification message from Tumblr yourself, whilst there’s still time, you might want to let your readers know.

One consequence of this change will be that pages on adult Tumblr blogs will suddenly disappear from search engine results. This will destroy the serendipity of chance discovery, all those who found this site because they were just curious about spanking and randomly googling, won’t be able to find blogs like this any more.

This change will also cut off kinky blogs from other sites in the community, breaking incoming links. Effectively, adult Tumblr blogs will be placed in a walled garden, a place only Tumblr users will be able to enter.

So given the precarious future of kink blogs on Tumblr, I’d suggest doing some of the following:

make a note of the mirror of this site, it’s not as polished as the Tumblr version, but has the same content. It might yet evolve to be my primary blog in time.

follow me on Twitter, I continue to post news and links to new content there, so you won’t miss anything.
