Now I’m adding a third…From Your Point of View” by Allurie

1- Teen romance - It’s jikook in high school and they are so cute. The fic references 80s/90s teen movies and it totally fits because this feels like one. ♥️

2- Angst…of the miscommunication kind mostly (there’s something else too) but done in a good way.

3- That trope..you know the one…hot popular jock and unpopular nerd…it’s an age old combo that I still adore especially when done well. Allurie has it down.

4- Sexy but not smutty…so if you are someone that is not all into prolonged explicit sex scenes this a good fic for you. Stuff happens but it’s not super explicit…more talk than description.

5- Side Taegi - for a fic that’s not that long (about 38k), so much is included, nothing feels rushed or missing. Allurie is such a good writer.

I won't do the 21 ships because that is a LOT and I think at least five of them fall under the same category jdksjfkg but I'll do the most popular ones/the ones I know about the most

GOD TIER CHEMISTRY: vhope, yoonmin, jinkook. these three ships are the most insane bc they literally have multiple instances of What The Fuck is going on moments. it just goes to show this fandom doesn't give a fuck about the hyung line because if they did these three would be the most popular ships for each ml member. instead they decide to put on their delulu goggles and dissect a 3 second hand brush in slow motion between the maknae line members 😭

TOP TIER CHEMISTRY: namseok, vmin, yoonjin. for personal reasons I cannot see vmin as a romantic ship BUT I won't deny they have everything for it to happen. I remember I was actually surprised when I got into the fandom and found out vmin isn't the larry of bts 💀 they have actual songs recorded about their bond and yet people choose to ignore that for taekook and jikook lmaooo bye. anyway yes yoonjin have as much ust as vmin but again this fandom doesn't give a fuck about hl ships sooo! and you already know how I feel about namseok (plugging in my fic real quick)

GREAT TIER CHEMISTRY: namkook, jihope, taegi. almost all the ships in this tier I don't ship romantically but I LOVE their bond. especially jihope for me personally I see them as platonic soulmates almost on the same level as vmin </3 namkook is the perfect mix of admiration and devotion from jungkook and tsundere ass namjoon lmao. but I still see it as a super fraternal bond. taegi have also a great deal of chemistry!!

GOOD TIER CHEMISTRY: jikook, namgi, taejin. these ships I have no emotional investment or even any interest in because whatever they give I can get from literally any of the ships mentioned above but I admit they still have chemistry and I can see why they're so popular.

MEH TIER CHEMISTRY: sope, namjin, yoonkook. there is nothing here. these are all alright ships and if you just like them bc they're your biases or bias + bias wrecker or whatever I get it! but let's not pretend like they have any more chemistry than any pair of actual siblings.

BOTTOM OF THE BARREL CHEMISTRY: taekook, 2seok, minjoon. I was gonna make this one only taekook but after thinking about it I don't think any other ship can beat that one so I just added other two as proof that lacking chemistry doesn't mean there's not an amazing friendship and bond to talk about. I'm not saying these ships are bad, they just have the bare minimum amount of chemistry to be considered romantic. they're still awesome friendships tho. and a big fuck you to taekookers for the larrification of what is undeniably a pure, beautiful friendship

fandoms: just for shits and giggles am gonna try and list all the fandoms i’ve written for? roughly chronologically speaking, my first fic was for Kuroshitsuji and the we go to Harry Potter, SKAM, Narnia, Sherlock Holmes (unpublished), Peter Pan (unpublished) - I don’t write for any of these anymore? except for Narnia which I might return to when the mood hits. I’ve written a ton for BTS and The Untamed, and still wish to write more for Nirvana in Fire. I’ve also written for Winter Begonia, Hwarang and YYY: The Series. Current WIPs are Word Of Honor, The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty, Original Sin - none of those will probably see the light of day. I’ve also had thoughts of writing for Killer and Healer, Strangers from Hell and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

two-shot: hmm I guess my two oneshots for YYY could count as a two shot? am not sure, but I simply had different ideas and seperated them instead of writing one coherent oneshot.

most popular multi-chapter fic: my BTS Mafia AU Take Me Into Your Skin. I’m quite proud of this one because it was my first ever multichaptered story back when I wrote it in 2018 and it turned out to be over 160k words long, which is just wild? I guess I cringe at it a lot and I would change a lot about it now, but am still proud of it because I had a lot of fun and am still fond of the story. (Statistics - Subscriptions: 144 / Hits: 18319 / Kudos: 519 / Comment Threads: 83 / Bookmarks: 295)

actual worst part of writing: everything currently. I feel a little bit like an imposter doing these games right now, cause I haven’t written anything that I’m truly proud of recently (or like, this past year I guess). This slump is very hard to get out of.  Under normal circumstances, the worst part of writing is when I know what I wanna write but it doesn’t come out? and when every sentence just sounds horrible and not at all how I imagined. Also the physical act of writing is difficult because I get tired so easily and when I don’t manage to get into hyperfocus and a nice flow, it’s just exhausting. 

also coming up with summaries, fuck that. 

how you choose your titles: i’m very basic and usually use some quotes or lyrics, but recently I’ve been trying to be more creative with my titles? I need to exercise that because I truly wanna learn how to come up with my own titles that sound nice. I suck at them so much 

do you outline: absolutely. my memory sucks badly so I always try to keep an overview in my notebooks because I can’t trust my brain to remember all the important details I come up with. Working with notes is also so freeing because I’m free to do anything I want and don’t need to worry about actually writing it? I like having visuals for my stories so it feels like an anchor I can hold on to when I’m lost.

ideas you probably won’t get around to, but wouldn’t it be nice: oh boy this is difficult, because I don’t have specifics for any of these ideas and that’s why I never get around to do them? I guess bringing my Wen Kexing and Wang Zhi character studies into shape is the most doable project rn. I would also love to finish my Original Sin fic because I really want to write a proper case-fic with actual plot but am just so stuck on that and too stupid for my own criminal cases so currently I’ve put that on hold. 

An idea that I’ve had for years now is a Sokka/Suki/Toph future fic? I would ignore what happens in LOK and for some reason I’m stuck on the thought that I want to explore this OT3? I want to explore how in their adult lives, they would fit together and especially how Toph could work as addition to the relationship Sokka und Suki have? I would love to explore the individual relationships they have with each other but I’m also very nervous about it because I’ve never written for ATLA and I don’t know if I can explore this properly. 

another idea that’s been on my mind ever since Singularity dropped is a taegi Dorian Gray AU? I’ve already done a little bit of research about 19th century Korea and Korean portrait paintings because of course, I would wanna make it as historically accurate as I can manage but honestly, I feel this project is quite hopeless. I think I also have very conflicting ideas about how I should do this and if it’s even a good idea to realise. 

Recently I’ve been thinking about writing a slow-burn enemies to lovers adventure story because I have Cravings. I don’t know if this would be an original project or some type of AU for some fandom, but I just really want to write about two people on opposite sides clashing together and having to work together, forming a reluctant bond and just. exploring the progress of that? Maybe there would be horses, probably historical, or maybe fantasy? I have no idea, I just wish I could write something like this some day. 

callouts @ me: stop being pretentious. not everything needs to be existential dread. don’t project all your issues into every character you write. not every sentence you write needs to be a Masterpiece and sometimes less is more. bring more structure to your stories instead of just aimlessly drifting. learn grammar for god’s sake.

best writing traits: i have no idea sorry. maybe that I heavily rely on my empathy? but i  truly do not know.

spicy tangential opinion: I don’t have any spicy opinions I think? Just do what you enjoy. Write what you want, you can worry about what to with it after. If you want to get rid of thoughts just do it. Don’t think about how it looks to other people, because unless you show it someone, it’s your art. It’s okay if it takes time, even if it’s frustrating. Pressure doesn’t help with creating art so maybe allow it to grow organically. is this spicy enough yet? don’t let people tell you you are less of a writer because you do things differently. there are methods, ideas, guides, advice - but there shouldn’t be rules to what makes you writer. everyone works differently. and to everyone who struggles - i know it sucks but as long as you find joy in writing, it’s not hopeless. sometimes things need a break or sometimes it needs a different shape and that’s okay ❤ did I reach the level of spiciness required here? 

summing up, I just wanna send strength to all writers out there because oh boy do we need it! and sending a lot of gratitude to all the fic-writers out there that have made my nights and days more enjoyable by sharing their passion.

1. Let's start with my all time favorite. I read this fic in two days because boy oh boyy it is hot. If i were to imagine a rich non-idol V this is it, such a rich personality, i want a love story like this and honestly if you are looking for smut this is THE fic.

Taehyung, who exudes an air of expense and confidence, is the last person Yoongi expected to fall in love with, and in turn, be loved by.

And suddenly, he's the only one.

2. I'm Jimin here. Just read this fic, that's all I got to say.

4. I loved this fic so much, popular and beautiful Taetae of course is a mood but add insecure/possessive Yoongi to the equation.

When Yoongi looks up to find out who Jungkook is looking at, to give this kid a shot at whatever oblivious boy has caught his eye, he finds Jungkook staring a hole into Taehyung.

“That would be my boyfriend,” Yoongi interjects none-too-kindly.

5. So this is a jikook fic but listen, V here is the friend that we all want but only a few have. And there is something so pure on his relationship with Jimin, true friendship and boy the personification of heart eyes mf.

6. I'm gonna finish this up with another jikook fic but this is a self-centered Taehyung thread so the reason why I like this fic so much is actually because of V, he is so relatable, cheeky and such a good friend.

Ya know something I’ve noticed is that people never stop to think WHY each pairing in VMinKook Is dIfferent and how they’d express love differently. It’s so simple really, I’m embarrassed it took me this long to see it. Like, VMin and JiKook both seem “really obvious” in terms of physical affection, but have you noticed the common factor? It’s Jimin! He tends to increase the physicality and “questionable” behavior of any pairing he appears in, just cause that’s kind of his natural way of expressing affection. It’s funny how both V and JK on their own are generally less clingy (not totally, I’m not blind ya know!) than when Jimin enters the mix. Jimin always seems to inspire bizarre energy in the others: full chaos when paired with Jin, RM, or JHope and endless bickering when paired with Suga. Jimin is a catalyst for all lunacy that occurs within that group! I’ve solved it!

(BTW, I only see the 7 as platonic soulmates, but picking apart personality dynamics is fun!)

If anything, I’d say Jimin is probably the most shippable member out of all of them because his dynamics with all of them works. I remember back in Bon Voyage S2 in Hawaii, when they decided on the friendship teams, they put namseok and taegi together because their dynamics were interesting and somewhat uncommon. And then there’s Jimin going “I don’t really care where I am, nothing interesting to see wherever I go~” and it’s true?

I mean think about it: Jimin and Jin is like, drinking buds (add in Jungkook and you’ve got the funniest trio to ever grace the surface of this planet) who’re both very close to Lee Hyun. Jimin and Joon is the ever popular MiniMoni with Joon being the softest bean when it comes to all things Jimin. I don’t even think I need to talk about Jimin and Yoongi, they’re literally the Jimin-ship that’s got the most fics on AO3. They bicker so much but Yoongi’s also got the biggest soft spot for Jimin which is why he tolerates so much of Jimin’s teasing. Jimin and Hobi are the other eternal roommates, with Hobi very much adopting the “hyung” persona that babies his Jiminie. Jimin and Taehyung are ‘95 soulmates and you should all know Jimin and Jungkook by now (softest hyung who dotes on baby bun who in turn is so whipped when it comes to Jimin).

Jimin’s pretty much like the glue of Bangtan in a way and I love him for it.

On Research: Worldbuilding and Culture

Hullo, in this post I’m going to talk about how I research and do world-building for my stories!

I’m doing this through the following ways:

1) using chapter 1 of my historical Taegi fic  to illustrate what I did to research the era and the culture for that period,

2) providing the templates and tools I used in the hopes that it can help some of you all writers if you ever want to write your own research-intensive stories or original fiction that requires world-building!

While I’m using my BTS Taegi fic as a means to explain my process, this post is for any sort of writing project - original or fanfiction. If you follow me for fic, though, there will be chapter 1 spoilers for it. So if you haven’t read that yet, be-warned that there be spoilers below!

> How I do my research/world-building:

 If your idea for the actual story is agnostic of time-period or setting, identifying that is possibly the first step. My initial idea for this story was to have it take place during a war (the Imjin War between Japan and in 1590s was the first choice) but finding the spooky landscape to set it against while also maintaining the drama and tension of a battlefield was going to dilute the characters and their inner conflicts.

So I went back to reading about Korean history in broad terms (Google Books is your friend) , trying to locate a time-period to set my story in. I finally chose this time-period because it was very interesting to me in multiple ways.

- it’s still a way away from the big social reforms in Korea in the 1800s that would push it into the Modern Period of history

- it was a time period when common people and peasants began to lose trust in the king and the upper-class bureaucracy, leading to peasant rebellions and some villages stockpiling their own grains

- it is a time when global influences were beginning to creep into Korean society, including Christianity. In fact, just a few years from this, a major wave of persecution would be unleashed against Catholics in Korea.

- I chose this time-period also because I wanted the level of organization of society that’s in this fic. It’s been established already, which means the characters are at a point of history where things are more or less stable in terms of what is expected of them as a member of this society. I needed that stability to create a quieter sort of period mystery.

 To research for this story (or any other), once I pick the time period, I start looking for answers to my biggest questions: 

1) how did they live: this includes food, travel, interests, societal hierarchy and organization, family structure, music, religions, and mythology. Basically, anything that they shared as a cultural group. In doing this, I had to separate royalty from common folk, because so much history is written about the royals and there’s so less about the folk. I looked up everything from the food that the common people ate to the issues they faced (winter and the gap between rice and barley cultivation was a huge aspect; so huge, in fact, that the popularity of kimchi can be attributed to needing a protein source in the winter that wouldn’t go bad). I looked up clothes and fabrics and the layout of villages. I looked for traditional crafts. And when I did, I found myself going down rabbit holes about caste professions (the shaman, for example, is of low caste in Joseon society, which was surprising to me considering so many period fics I’ve read has depicted them in a different fashion.)

I know that this feels very disorganized and random, but that’s because I have been doing world-building—both fantasy and historical—for a long time, and my process is built basis what I’ve historically realized works for me. But to make this post more useful, I’ve figured out a template that helps to look into culture. I used to use this to build original fantasy worlds, and I think it is useful.

And here is a graphic where someone has analyzed Japanese culture through this lens:

Most cultures share elements of commonality. You can use this graphic above to figure out how to research. For example, the culture of Joseon Korea as I have tried to research for this fic comprises of:

1) Language (written and spoken - so Korean; Hangul, + Chinese characters);

2) Religion (shamanism + neo-confucianism)

3) Government (caste system + agrarian bureaucracy + royalty) etc.

You can fill in the blanks this way for any time period and thus get a better understanding of the culture you’re writing about.

 Additionally, I’ve spoken about the cultural iceberg on twitter before, but I find it very useful when I’m researching to pick up on each element in it and look up information pertaining to them.

This is how I use the iceberg:

> the top portion is usually the things that we’ve picked up on, through Run episodes or general Bangtan stuff. Like, we know hanbok is Korean traditional dress. We know the kind of food they eat. We know the music scene in SK, and that the major festivals are seollal and choseok.

> the bottom portion is where you gain deeper intercultural understanding. Notions of modesty, for example. We know that gender roles in Korea are more entrenched than they are in the west. In this fic, men are the ones mostly occupying spheres of influence, but women have their own spheres—we’ll get to that in a while. If you see, there’s an aspect called ‘nature of friendship’. This is where the concept of hyung-line/maknae-line/same-age friends all fit into this culture. It’s less visible than the top half, but you can still gain knowledge of it. Similarly, ‘attitude towards elders’ or ‘concepts of beauty’ are both aspects of culture. These are keywords you can use to learn more about culture. Again, you can also use this in original writing projects to build your fantasy world. I know I do :)

 Now that I know how my characters live, I come to the second stage of planning/world-building:

2) where in society are my characters: since I’m writing a mystery, I need someone who wants to solve it. I need detectives. I read up on everything I could about the Joseon lawmaking process, going through scholars and bureaucrats and ministers before I found a smaller, quieter force: the podocheong. I also need medics, people in charge of administration, senior officials, and so forth. For each of this, I tried to look into how my character could have entered that role, what that role comprises of, and where it puts them in that society. Seokjin, because he is a senior official, would require to have taken a test to enter into that force. His family would have to be of a particular class status to even enable him to take it. Knowing this, I looked up everything I could about the gwageo because I found it so fascinating! There were whole coaching centers dedicated to just teaching children of upper-class bureaucrats so they could pass the gwageo! If you belonged to an upper-class yangban family, and you didn’t pass the gwageo for four generations, your titles could be stripped from you. This is another nugget of information that I thought would be an interesting premise for a character being a in a particular conundrum—you’ll see that later in the story.

For Taehyung, being an artist in that age would have come with interesting baggage. Calligraphers and painters were usually higher-class folk. Peasants simply did not have the time or the materials to pursue art. But there are outliers—inkstick craftsmen, for example, are among what was considered the ‘vulgar common caste’ but they were the ones who made ink and color pigments.

 This just helps me create a richer world than I would have without putting in this research. It also makes your world seem more cohesive, lived-in, and deep.

So now that I know how they live and who they are, we come to:

 3) what are my external/internal conflicts: my characters behave the way they do because of the culture and the customs of the time period. My external conflict—the murders—have to be set against a background of this, and informed by this. So I chose to make Yoongi a sort of disgraced scholar because it allows him to operate outside of his station: he needs to talk to Taehyung, or villagers for example who are all beneath his station, and he wouldn’t be able to do that to the same effect if he is a regular scholar like Jin is. The culture simply won’t allow him to. That also leads to friction between yoonjin, and secrets once they start appearing. His current station helps him integrate better into Tae’s world, while removing him from the world he’s working for. It also serves for his internal conflict, fears and grief.

 Now if I were to extend this example to a more contemporary story: say your characters are in modern Seoul. Your external/internal conflicts can still be tied into the culture. Expectation on children to look after their aging parents OR the character’s family values vs. individual outlook OR Korea’s culture of students studying late into the night vs. the slowing job industry etc.  For a Jinkook fake-dating AU, say, consider what are the troubles that Jin and Jungkook, who have 5 years between them, individually face. 27 year old Jin’s place in society, social spheres and worries will be very different from just-out-of-college Jungkook’s.

 Why does any of this matter? 

I just think putting in some effort to understand culture makes for richer characters, a richer world, and better writing. Not to mention it lets you learn about a new culture, which I think is fascinating, especially if you spend so much of your time thinking/talking about 7 Korean boys.

 So to summarize— I guess this is how I research/worldbuild:

 1) Find out when and where

2) Find out who, and how that character is affected by the customs/culture of that era/setting

3) tie my external/internal conflicts back to the era/setting so that the world feels truly lived in and alive.

For truly good world-building, make sure that your conflicts are caused by limitations imposed on a character due to their cultural setting, or because whatever is happening is outside of their comfort zone. Human beings don’t live in a vacuum. The society and the values that we grow up in affects everything we do, every decision we make. Even rebelling against that culture is an aspect influenced by that culture. Your world (fantasy or otherwise) will feel way less flat if it follows the rules of actual cultures world over.
