Is the secret society a cult?
Well, I've made 1 2 3 many jokes about them being a cult... hold on.
Hmm...
A charismatic leader: Cults often have a charismatic leader who is seen as infallible and all-knowing. This leader is often the one who establishes the group's beliefs and practices, and they can have a great deal of control over the members.
Spencer Albright was so important to them, that as soon as he was gone from the picture they all freaked out and gave up!
Isolation from mainstream society: Cults often isolate their members from mainstream society. This can be done by physically separating the group from the outside world, or by controlling the members' access to information and communication.
Well, of course the Protectors don't live on Earth. They have to stay in Poptropica in order to fill out their mission!
A system of beliefs that is not open to questioning: Cults often have a system of beliefs that is not open to questioning. This can make it difficult for members to leave the group, even if they are unhappy.
They all gotta follow the rules... even if it makes them unhappy.
Spencer also is unhappy... and it makes me wonder who started this secret society to begin with...
(seriously, what's the backstory behind all this...)
Pressure on members to conform to the group's norms: Cults often put pressure on members to conform to the group's norms. This can include controlling their dress, diet, and behavior.
Well, we hadn't seen that. From what I remember.
Financial exploitation of members: Cults may financially exploit their members by charging them high fees for initiation or membership, or by demanding donations of money or property.
Obviously, we hadn't seen that.
Control over members' personal lives: Cults may control members' personal lives by dictating who they can see, what they can read, and what they can do. This can make it difficult for members to maintain relationships with their families and friends outside of the group.
Well... yeah.
4/6 ain't bad!

the only interesting modern novel adaption of a greek myth that i’ve ever read was bone gap by laura ruby and i didn’t even realize it was an adaption of the abduction of persephone and the orpheus & eurydice myths until halfway through. it was new! it was different! it was interesting! it was only loosely based on these myths to explore certain themes about identity and freedom and consent and love and losing a loved one and BEES and social norms and beauty standards and navigating living with a disability etc etc etc!! another example of a story that can stand alone but is only improved by deeper exploration when you consider the source material! it was such an unexpected story too, i could hardly predict a single thing that happened despite it being a partial adaption because it really was doing something original with those myths. like if you really insist on reading exclusively ya, that’s a good one to try! sure it’s not lgbt but it explores a lot of other important topics and anyway that’s not necessarily a good way of choosing what you read (call me by your name is also myth-reference-heavy lgbt book that emulates an eromenos/erastes relationship and we know how this website feels about that so....)(also if you don’t have an opinion about whether achilles was the eromenos or erastes or neither in their relationship i don’t particularly care about your thoughts on his and patroclus’ relationship. sorry)(i think achilles was the eromenos to patroclus’ erastes role and i will die on that hill unless presented with a very compelling counter argument). also for queer ya, aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe – not classic lit related as the name implies but gay and very good. gay fantasy? carry on. gay sci-fi? we are the ants. more ya high school gay drama? simon vs the homo sapien agenda. not to mention all the other ya gay lit you can find recommendations for on the internet with a quick google search. hit up goodreads or something. anyway in terms of other adaptions that i liked: hadestown i also enjoyed even though it was more of a straight adaption and the game hades looks promising and fun to me too, and i think i will give ursula le guin’s lavinia a try at some point, and of course mythology island on poptropica is a classic, but yeah for the most part modern adaptions of mythology don’t resonate with me, maybe because the language is less interesting? maybe because it feels trite? i don’t know, maybe it’s minor heresy not to spend more time on modern applications of myth but i simply do not enjoy it
#references on the other hand? or perhaps a motif? some parallels? love that shit#hannibal lecter you’re on thin fucking ice but actually your achilles/patroclus comparison checks out#OH the oa? i still haven’t seen past season 1 but damn that’s an excellent use of homeric epic#considering it’s also a nostos narrative like the odyssey! oh wait i have thoughts about this now but that’s for another day#again i’m not taking this seriously i just have a lot of opinions on this shit specifically#(& i’m procrastinating on my aristophanes final paper. kill me now. i kind of hate the guy tbh)

Something cute for a Mage of Doom? Thanks!
Huh, another canon classpect. Thisshould be fun!
Mages of Doom aren’t necessarily the mostfashionable of the bunch, but they tend to like ripped-up sorta styles. Theymight be into grungy clothing, maybe they’re straight up punk, they might bepastel goths, or maybe they dress pretty normally but with ripped knees. Evenif what they wear has no holes in it, they very much like the idea but won’tfor a variety of reasons. Most people won’t be wearing ripped jeans in theAlaskan winter, after all. There’s something foreboding about seeing peopleintentionally wear damaged-looking clothing, as if being damaged is the newnorm, something to be outwardly expressed and shoved in your face. Mages ofDoom absolutely love this.
Mages of Doom are also the type of personto have overly-complex passwords for everything. There’s nothing wrong withprotecting your information, but it’s hard not to raise an eyebrow when you seethe security measures they have on their Poptropica account. Robbing them isnot technically impossible, but itwould be so inefficient that most criminals would leave after the first halfhour. This can be surprisingly helpful in certain situations, but for the mostpart it means they have to put in their wifi-code in your phone every time youvisit them.
If you ever spend a Halloween with a Mageof Doom, or maybe watch a scar movie with them, they will always bring up thesame question: Why are ghosts considered scary? For zombies and vampires andsuch, you’re afraid of getting hurt and killed, but what is a wispy dead persongoing to do? Make them walk through a cold spot? Anyone who is actually afraidof ghosts will bring up the idea of body possession, but the Mage will rolltheir eyes and retort that neither of them have the kind of figure a ghostwould want to possess. They don’t find ghosts to be scary, and if they canactually contact them, consider them maybe annoying and a little sad. Theyrefuse to get scared by the concept of ghosts though.
