Sorry hope you don't mind me adding onto this, I totally agree with your points. Poppy has been bugging me for ages
I have so much to say why poppy just doesn't work on so many level as an artistic project, but one of the biggest things that bugs me is it's usage of iconography and ideas from other media without actually understanding the context as to why they work. I mean we all know it apes off of games like portal and fnaf, but it has no understanding of why those stories work and it's doesn't. Like one example is it's world building in context to fnaf. It's trying to do the "what goes on in the shadows/what the public doesnt see" that fnaf does but without the proper set up. In fnaf you see all this weird shit cuz the mc is after hours, it's thinly veiled corporate secrets and negligence that hides it's evil. Like yea the crazy sci fi level robotics and supernatural elements are the fun part but they are in service of the theme of finding a hidden secret. Poppy's world is just... so haphazard? It's a popular toy brand that fell into bankruptcy cuz they where doing human experiments. But why? And as you touched on, there is no reason. There is no clear intrigue to go deeper. I guess people went missing? Maybe the mc was an orphan kid there? Who gives a shit cuz the writers are clearly making shit up as they go along (introducing new characters and whole new ideas without any build up, at least fnaf had a linear build up of ideas through sequels, poppy just drops shit in). But playcare is just not interesting. Idk why they failed, idk why the took that jump to experimenting on literal orphan children. At least with fnafs sl bunker it's an offshoot of the main brand from one dude who was insane and basically the main root of evil (in the clickteam era). Everyone at playcare is apparently William Afton on crack levels of evil. Its not that they enable and cover up bad deads, they are all in on it.
Fnaf in all it's failings is at least subtle and interesting with its ideas of the corruption of seemingly happy places into ones of suffering and agony, poppy just has no subtly in implementing the themes it so desperately wants to rip off.
Poppy is so surface level. It stands for nothing and doesn't seek to actually do anything interesting with the ideas it steals from popular media. It's all flash and spectacle, but the frame the story is telling is flimsy at best.
this is a fnaf blog, not a mascot horror one, but i'm gonna break theme a little for a sec and say that -- as someone barely on the periphery of poppy playtime -- something that's always baffled me about its premise (as i read into it) is that there's like....... zero reason for the bigger bodies initiative to have ever happened in the first place? like, realistically, what on earth are you achieving by turning kids into giant toys, how is that going to help your sales?? let alone your massive pile of debt??? if you just need workers WHY would you not go for robots and if you're trying to create the perfect toy why does it have to be gigantic and deadly. just about the only reason you can use to justify something like that is an idealogical one, but that doesn't quite work when the guy behind it has to convince the board and the staff to go along with it -- unless they've drunk the kool-aid too in which case WHY and can you see why this has been driving me batty for the past couple days.
#sorry i can delete if this is annoying#god i just hate poppy so much#idgaf about most mascot horror but at least they try to do smthn new with the premise#poppy is just so desperatly trying to take other popular ips ideas#i finished the first 3 “chapters” and its so fucking ass. its so funny how it tries to do world building#and completely fails at it#ruin has more thematic depth in the opening sequence with the chica dipping bird than poppy has in its 3 chapter run#analysis i guess
