Art “Poppa Funk” Neville is not only an O.G., but a bonafide O.F. as he is the Original Funksta, in his Funky Octopus tee.

As the founder of New Orleans funk group, “The Meters” (one of the most sampled bands in music history), as well as the patriarch of the Grammy Award-winning group The Neville Brothers, Art’s soulful singing and wailing B3 organ have been woven into the fabric of rock-n-roll.

This week, it was announced that The Meters are a nominee to be inducted into the 2014 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame!

The Meters, are often referred to as “funk pioneers,” and wrote such funk classics as “Cissy Strut,” which has been covered by everyone from John Scofield to John Mayer. They did two tours as an opening act for The Rolling Stones, and recorded as a backing band for the likes of Paul McCartney, Robert Palmer, Dr. John, and Labelle for their hit song “Lady Marmalade.” 

The Meters were nominated once before to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 and have been cited as an influence to such artists as The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phish, and The Grateful Dead.

We lost another one of our spiritual and musical gurus. He was the funkiest keyboardist, a killer singer, the coolest dude in the world, and a total badass. He was an inventor of funk and - sheeeeiiiit! When 99% of good funk was made in New Orleans, Art Neville either made it or influenced it. He was Poppa Funk.
