It's true this book is superb on SO MANY LEVELS. Read Willa Glickman's in-depth feature on 'An Illustrated Catalog of American Fruits & Nuts: The U.S. Department of Agriculture Pomological Watercolor Collection' and the USDA illustrators' role in bringing the world’s fruits to American supermarkets. "In a time before color photography was widespread, USDA artists, many with decades-long careers at the agency, created 7,584 technically accurate illustrations to record this cornucopia of the new. Along with short essays, including excerpted musings on fruit from Michael Pollan and John McPhee, the catalog contains the most visually striking of these images, from the incandescent King tangor to the dusky, green-fleshed Tragedy plum.… Though we now eat fruits from every part of the globe in every season, the selection we enjoy is far more limited than the one promised by the USDA’s mouthwatering collection. The concerted efforts of plant explorers, researchers, breeders, marketers, government officials, entrepreneurs, and giant corporations enabled fruit to flow around the globe—but at a human, ecological, and ultimately gustatory cost." Read the full feature via linkinbio. @usdagov @adamgollner @michael.pollan @marinavitaglione #botanicaldrawings #botanicalwatercolors #pomologicalwatercolors #pomology #botanicalillustration #nationalagriculturallibrary @nybooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CWeLMy8J5fm/?utm_medium=tumblr

A selection of pomological watercolors from 'An Illustrated Catalog of American Fruits & Nuts' are up now @guardian !! See all via linkinbio. @aliceefisher writes, "Pascale Georgiev, editorial director at Atelier Éditions, was researching botanical artwork a few years ago when she came across the US Department of Agriculture’s pomological watercolor collection, an archive of 7,500 watercolors of fruit and nuts grown in the US between 1886 and 1942, mostly created before photography was widespread. The discovery led to a new book, 'An Illustrated Catalog of American Fruits & Nuts', full of images that Georgiev describes as irresistible. 'The belle angevine pear [left] makes my heart sing and I’m partial to a plum named tragedy.' She’s also proud that the book showcases women working in science: 'Nine of this US department’s 21 artists were women. A rare thing at the time.' Most of all she’d like readers to think about biodiversity. 'I hope they share my delight in discovering the history of the fruit we consume, alongside beautiful artworks.' @_pascale @ateliereditions @usdagov @adamgollner @michael.pollan @marinavitaglione #botanicaldrawings #botanicalwatercolors #pomologicalwatercolors #pomology #botanicalillustration #nationalagriculturallibrary https://www.instagram.com/p/CUU1KNWAO9y/?utm_medium=tumblr

We have to admit, it's a big thrill to see Atelier Éditions' drop-dead gorgeous, straight-up fascinating 'An Illustrated Catalog of American Fruits & Nuts: The U.S. Department of Agriculture Pomological Watercolor Collection' featured by legendary food writer Florence Fabricant in the @nytimes Food section. Fabricant writes, "That the U.S. Department of Agriculture and art could be on speaking terms seems astonishing. Yet from 1886 to 1942 the agency commissioned artists to document fruits and nuts grown in the United States, to record the varieties and help with identification at a time when the use of color photography was not widespread. The beautiful new book exhibits but a fraction of the 7,584 botanical watercolor paintings in the collection. Lively, informative text accompanies the illustrations, and there are also entries by John McPhee, Jacqueline Landrey, Michael Pollan and Marina Vitaglione." Congrats @ateliereditions !! Read more about the book via linkinbio. @usdagov @adamgollner @michael.pollan @marinavitaglione #botanicaldrawings #fruits #nuts #americanfruitsandnuts #botanicalwatercolors #pomologicalwatercolors #pomology #botanicalillustration #nationalagriculturallibrary https://www.instagram.com/p/COvFbczp7Ef/?igshid=1w8bnw7sov14

Advance praise for @ateliereditions forthcoming Staff Favorite, 'An Illustrated Catalog of American Fruits & Nuts: The U.S. Department of Agriculture Pomological Watercolor Collection' @hyperallergic Lauren Moya Ford writes, "The book’s main attraction is its hundreds of lusciously detailed, full-color illustrations: the reader can almost taste and smell the bright, juicy fruits and nuts across its pages. But the catalogue’s accompanying texts by Adam Leith Goliner, Jaqueline Landey, John McPhee, and Michael Pollan about each fruit’s history and makeup — which encompass elements of archaeology, anthropology, botany, and the arts — are unexpectedly illuminating, and nearly as delightful…" Read more via linkinbio. Preorder at artbook.com or via your favorite independent bookseller! @laurenmofo @usdagov @adamgollner @michael.pollan @marinavitaglione #botanicaldrawings #botanicalwatercolors #pomologicalwatercolors #pomology #botanicalillustration #nationalagriculturallibrary https://www.instagram.com/p/COIZN8xJvan/?igshid=1am8c8xe6orze
