The sixteenth of the Endangered Species Murals is finished! This big wall is located near the Convention Center in downtown El Paso, Texas, and features five endangered species from the US/Mexico borderlands: the Chiricahua Leopard Frog, Northern Aplomado Falcon, Mexican Grey Wolf, Ocelot, and Sneed’s Pincushion Cactus. The mural was created by me and three other artists: Jesus “Cimi” Alvarado and Martin “Blast” Zubia from El Paso, and Ivan “Shack” Melendez from Ciudad Juarez. We also worked with the students of La Fe Prep school in El Paso’s Segundo Barrio neighborhood on the cactus. We employed a technique that was new to me- painting on a polyester substrate called Polytab, which is then adhered to the wall with a gel medium. This made it possible to work on the heads indoors at a downtown studio, and to bring the panels into the school to work with the youth.

It was a real pleasure to work with these artists and students to create this international collaboration, and I think it does a pretty good job of summarizing one big truth about the border- that these lands are intrinsically connected, that there’s nothing that separates them, and that the communities of humans, animals and plants that inhabit them deserve freedom of movement and protection from harm. “ED RUSCHA MONUMENT”

For 19 years a towering 70-foot-tall portrait of American painter Edward Ruscha loomed over Downtown LA from S. Hill St., and when the mural was painted over in 2006 Twitchell received the largest settlement granted under federal and state protections of certain public works. In 2015 he announced that work was underway to create an updated portrait of Ruscha for the American Hotel at Traction Ave. and Hewitt St. in the LA Arts District. Twitchell calls his work “simple and old fashioned” but achieving his end result is anything but simple. His typical process involves photographing the subject, sketching many studies of mural details, and creating a model of the building, before then hand drawing the entire mural in graphite, hand mixing all the paints, and then painting the final work in his studio on 3’ x 4’ panels of polytab fabric. Twitchell’s Instagram indicates he still plans to add a drop-shadow surrounding the two windows to the right of the figure.  @kenttwitchell  @american_hotel   @arts_district_la

Second Weekend…..

Yea!! We actually painted from about 1:45 to 3:30ish, on Saturday. And we have the second table up and 4 panels drawn!! We only painted black and white today - waiting on other colors that should be in sometime next week. The painting takes getting used to. The surface is a bit too chalky and has a texture to it which does not allow the brush to move smoothly. I believe it will take 2 coats of paint on each panels. Not sure how long it will take to do a whole panel. I am thinking we might only be able to complete the first coat, on 2 panels per weekend, unless our speed improves with experience. All weekends in June and July.
