ONE / Evie Mine

Hand poured by Evie Mine founder Celeste in her studio in Chicago, these candles are made from an unscented beeswax and soy wax blend. According to Kelly Thompson of Makers’ Mrkt, one of the only stockists of Evie Mine in Australia, these are the ‘OG maker of this trending candle style’. With over 20 years experience in candle making, Evie Mine candles are the original and the best!

TWO / Maison Balzac

When Maison Balzac released their ‘Une Reve’ collection in October this year, we couldn’t get enough of these bobbly, flared and tapered candles! The matching roly poly stacked candle holders takes these to the next level, and tap into the coloured glass homewares trend we’ve been loving this year.

THREE / Pinky’s Store + Studio Arhoj

Sold in handy pairs of bright, complementary colours, these dinner candles from Pinky’s Store are a total no-brainer and look GREAT en masse. FOUR / Blazed Wax

Created by Melbourne-based housemates and best friends, Blazed Wax is the side hustle of jeweller Ruby Kannava and Sister Studios co-founder Emma Cutri. What started as a fun little 2020 side project has quickly escalated into a fully-fledged candle biz! Hand poured from their Brunswick studio, Ruby and Emma’s candles are made from 100% unscented soy wax in a few unique styles.

These were a big hit with Melburnians over lockdown and brought some much-needed brightness and ambience into our homes! And we love that they’re made right here in Melbourne.

FIVE / Hilary Green

Hilary Green is a new Melbourne maker we’ve had our eyes on recently. The artist creates kooky ceramic sculptures that almost look like barnacled treasures, dredged up from the bottom of the ocean! The ultimate compliment to her gnarled candelabras are these witchy candles in a range of pastels and fluros, hand dipped by Hilary and made with a soy/beeswax blend.

SIX / Lex Pott

Were these the candles that started the trend in 2020? The double-ended Twist candle by Dutch designer Lex Pott have been a HUGE hit this year, popping up in the homes of design savvy people all over the world. They’re pretty much Instagram famous at this point. Doubling as a design objet, these candles give you real bang for your buck!

SEVEN / Oh It’s perfect

Events and Activation agency Oh It’s Perfect lost all their client projects booked for the year back in March. Founder Sammy Hassan wasted no time in rethinking their offerings, using the time to design a range of fab products, preserved flowers and candles.

Their twist dazzle candles are designed in Melbourne and handmade in Denmark. ‘We spent 7 months trying to find a candle maker who could make the candles, we sampled with 4 candle makers, one local, and four European before we finally found the one’, says Sammy. OH, they’re perfect!

EIGHT / Tony Assness

Hand poured in Bondi, these beeswax candles by Tony Assness add a bit of drama and grandeur to any interior. Available in a range of different sizes (the largest coming in at 60cm tall!), a vignette of these would make for its own mini at-home art installation.

NINE / You, Me And Bones

Waan Pivasiri has spent seven years perfecting her hand-poured candles, and we reckon she’s got it just right! We particularly love these squiggly, chubby varieties – a great way to incorporate the curvy interiors trend at home, without splashing major cash on something more permanent.

Ten / Kerryn levy

We’re huge fans of Adelaide-based ceramicist Kerryn Levy, and GASPED when we first saw her spectacular candle holders! Ranging from single stems to a candelabra style that can hold up to 9 at a time, these masterpieces are for the serious candle people out there.

ELEVEN / Sarah Nedovic

Ceramicist Sarah Nedovic is best known for her exquisite Lady Lamps, and has recently added a limited edition collection of sculptural candle holders to her portfolio. Drawing from abstract, figurative sculpture, these handmade functional objects are also design pieces – the ultimate luxury.

* Grantaire and Musichetta got each of their tattoos together. Musichetta has three flowers across her stomach- a daffodil for Joly, a lily for Bossuet, and a tulip for Grantaire, each with their names in tiny cursive letters. Grantaire has the same tattoos stretching down his arm, except instead of the tulip, there's a peony and the word "Chetta". They both have constellations too. She has Leo on her thigh, and he has Libra on his stomach. She has a bird on the back of her shoulder, and he has twelve small feathers scattered across his back, one for each of the Amis and the three girls. Grantaire also has a small heart on his wrist that matches one on Chetta's and Joly's, as a reminder that they can all overcome their mental illnesses. He wanted to get one with Bossuet, but he's afraid of needles. * Joly and Chetta always sleep in the middle of the bed, but Grantaire and Bossuet get the middle of the couch during movie cuddles. * They split up all the house work: Grantaire cooks, Chetta tidies, Joly cleans surfaces, and Bossuet does laundry. * They have Sweatpants Sundays where they wear sweatpants (or pajama shorts if it's summer) all day and watch movies and bake and chill. * They have SO many pets. They have a Keeshond and a Black Lab, registered as Grantaire and Joly's ESAs (emotional support animals) respectively, as well as three cats, two Guinea pigs, and two budgies. * Grantaire loves painting his datemates more than any other subject. Over half his paintings are of them and the animals, in some combination. * Bossuet taught himself to knit watching tutorials online, and now he knits hats and scarves and sweaters and blankets for the others all the time. The unanimous favorites are the set of Pride scarves- bi for Grantaire, pan for Chetta, ace for Joly (though he got another one with the demiboy flag for his birthday), and poly for Bossuet ("because we can't be /matching/, R. That crosses a line into tackiness.") * For the winter holidays, Bossuet also knitted a giant sweater with four neck holes so they could all wear it at once. It was covered in snowflakes, Christmas trees, and dreidels. They won the Amis' Ugly Holiday Sweater contest that year. * Having his datemates' support helps Grantaire recover a lot, and he finds himself with more hope and motivation, more willing to participate in ABC meetings and events. * Joly and Bossuet go out running together sometimes. It's a fun activity for just the two of them. * Grantaire teaches dance classes in the afternoon during the week, and Musichetta comes to all the ballet lessons (first as a student, and later as an assistant). * They all leave reminders all over the house for each other. "Did you take your meds?" "Have you had enough water?" "You are so loved!!" "Have you eaten nothing but junk food for two days straight?" "Cuddle a cat today!" "Have you showered this week?" "Did you clean the Guinea pig cage?" etc. * Bossuet loves putting Chetta and Grantaire's hair in braids. * Joly can sing really well, so sometimes he and Grantaire will sing together while Grantaire plays guitar. * Joly and Chetta are master scrabble players. Only they will play against each other anymore, because they're too good. * Bossuet and Graintaire have a shared love of the Eragon books. Whenever Bossuet is sick (which happens a lot), Grantaire will read them to him and do all the voices differently.
