This Saturday, at St James's Palace in London, the man most of us have known all our lives as Prince Charles will be officially proclaimed King following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
The fact he will be the oldest man in history to accede to the throne has been much remarked upon; the fact he will also be the most stylish, less so.
Those of us who care about such things can play an easy game. What is your favourite King Charles III style moment?
Maybe it’s the time he wore a western suit (in a jazzy shade of millennial pink) with a check shirt, a bolo tie and a quartz-hued ten-gallon hat on an official tour of Canada in the late 1970s.
Tumblr media
Or perhaps it’s the time he wore a short-sleeved baby-blue safari shirt with a pair of chinos and some riding boots to the polo.
Our personal favourite? The time he brandished his considerable wealth with no shortage of rakishness by pairing a yolk-yellow Hermès sweater (complete with cartoonish “Happy Hermès” logo) with a chambray shirt and a pair of skintight white jeans to, you guessed it, a polo match at the Guards Polo Club in Windsor.
Tumblr media
What people tend to forget about Charles is that he was a bit of a style icon back in the day.
But it's something that will be brought back to our collective consciousness as the outpouring of grief and tributes from around the world slowly give way to looking at the future of the monarchy, which Charles now leads after the longest wait in royal history.
Take the forest-green and cherry-red shirt Charles wore to play in a charity polo match in the late Seventies.
Imbued with a prepped-up, Eton-boy-gone-bad vibe (not least because Charles chose to wear it quite so close-cut), it wouldn’t be difficult to imagine Frank Ocean – or even the fash pack’s favourite skater Blondey McCoy – wearing the same thing today and looking every bit the wavy young disruptor doing it.
Then there’s that full-on, Yves Saint Laurent-inspired taupe safari suit he wore on a state visit to Australia in 1985.
Tumblr media
Both of those looks exemplify Charles’s acute understanding of the soft power demonstrated by an excellent cut.
The King so often opted – and still opts – for muted shades over showier ones and tends to pick garments that focus on function over form.
This attention to detail is something those studying the King have often remarked on.
The man who played him in the The Crown, Josh O'Connor, said:
“Whenever he gets out of a car, he checks his cufflink, checks his pocket and then waves. [It’s] the same movement every time.”
It’s this sense of consistency that defines Charles' unique personal flair.
“In every photo you see, he has great style. The shirt, tie and pocket square combinations are put together so well, with a great eye for detail,” says Steven Quin, retail director at Turnbull & Asser.
“He’s not afraid of colour and he clearly wears what he feels comfortable in and does not follow trends. HRH has always worn a double-breasted jacket.
I remember reading a quote from him where he stated that his style 'comes back into fashion every 25 years’. That still rings true. His elegance is timeless.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The other important thing to note about Charles’ very specific mode of dressing is that he’s loyal to the brands he likes and, perhaps most importantly, he invests in quality.
He has his shirts made at the aforementioned Jermyn Street shirtmaker Turnbull & Asser.
He wears handmade shoes from Northampton shoemaker Crockett & Jones.
He gets his ceremonial gear from Ede & Ravenscroft.
He alternates having his suits made at Gieves & Hawkes and Anderson & Sheppard. It’s a roster of loyalty many British men will probably relate to.
“[King] Charles is a total inspiration. His taste is impeccable, almost always in double-breasted jackets, looking resplendent but totally at ease with a tie and pocket square,” says John Harrison, creative director at Gieves & Hawkes.
”He’s also done more than anyone in the public eye to promote the idea of bespoke garments and handmade shoes being investments, to last forever with proper care and the odd repair or patch-up. He makes us all want to dress like a better man.”
Tumblr media
Ultimately, though, it’s the confidence King Charles displays with his wardrobe decisions – a certain ruffled indifference – that makes his style so covetable.
Though today he’s best known for wearing a double-breasted suit better than any man on earth (fact), once upon a time his collars were curled, his shirts were French tucked, his jumpers were oversized.
Such flourishes are beyond him now, and not just because he's a man of 73.
After Saturday's official proclamation will come much more pomp and ceremony to sit him on the throne: a second meeting of the Accession Council in which he must swear an oath to preserve the Church of Scotland (a tradition dating back to the early 18th century).
A fanfare of trumpets from the balcony above St James's Palace, gun salutes in Hyde Park and from naval ships at sea, and the national anthem sung with the words “God Save the King.”
All of these before the coronation itself, at which Charles will have the crown placed on his head before a global audience of millions.
He will dress according to tradition throughout, in suits of impeccable shape and cut.
But as he goes forward in the role he has waited a lifetime to play, something of the King's fastidious but playful character will come back into what he wears and how he wears it.
It will be part of his legacy, wherever that may lead us.

Ok, this is unfortunately the only good pic I got at the show but I was too busy dancing to take pictures anyway. I had not been to a stadium show in like 10 years and I forgot how crazy and crowded the venue gets. Even taking the subway home from the show was insane. It was fun to be a part of a cultural event like this though. Buzz and I just had a blast and I screamed a lot lol
That's all for September!

A Step Into the Forest/ Chapter 2- The End of the Before
It started with the crows (or raven, whatever). They were already there when we arrived. I guess it makes the house more theirs than ours; which might be why I felt so uncomfortable around them- or why they acted so cocky all the time. I “met” them on the same fateful day we entered the house for the same time- just the day before I had my vision.
My dad’s car had just turned right, leaving the forest, and the house came into view. I must admit, I picked up my jaw from the floor when I saw it. It was pretty big, although it obviously wasn’t a mansion. It was two floors high plus an attic under the roof. There was a wooden door with a porch and 8 windows; two on either side of the porch, the big glass window on the right side of the building, three more on the second floor (one giving access to a big balcony I already saw as mine before my parents took the big bedroom that had it...), and the last one being the little attic window with crappy curtains that let sunlight though in the early morning- the one I sleep next to if you followed. Before being told so, I knew it was old. The woodwork on the house is not one anybody nowadays has the patience to do. But I could see it had been repainted a short time ago. The outside walls were painted a shade of brown (sepia if I remember correctly) with a Copper colour highlighting the Details on the woodwork and the roof painted hunter green. It was a really Beautiful house (take that as the opinion of somone who knows Nothing of architectural styles, house values, or houses in General of course) and I didn't understand how my Father could have afforded to rent it for almost the whole summer with his, to be honest, pretty meager salary. A sentiment my mother shared, judging by her bemused expression… But she didn't ask my dad; although I knew they would talk about it later on- when they were alone.
The car pulled up on the gravel path and stopped before a menacing, stingy gate. Waiting boredly for us, slouched bedside the gate, was the employee from the house renting company. From what I had understood, the owners couldn't meet and give us the keys in person so they gave it to the Company who then sent one of their guy to deliver it to us. He would give us a quick tour of the house, give us the keys, and leave us be.
My parents climbed out of the car with me following behind and, obviously, they started exchanging meaningless small-talk. No one was paying me any attention, so I zoned out and instead of listening to their conversation I began to take in the house in more details. The fence I was standing next to and a red brick wall enclosed the whole property. I thought it clearly was more for decoration than actual defense; the brick wall only stood up to my shoulder blades and a most people would easily climb over it. On the other side of the gate, I could glimpse an unruly, thorny garden in which half a dozen trees joined hands to form a circle around the house.
The guy (I don't remember his Name. I knew it at the time, he had a Name tag on his blue polo Shirt. But I can't for the life of me remember what it was… Should I have?) finally stopped talking and took out a small key that seemed made of the same metal as the fence and opened the gate.
You would would think it was right there, as the gate swang open, that it happenned- that I sensed it. But no. Everything was normal until he stepped Inside.
It was at the moment he crossed the gate- when he stepped on the other side-that it happened.
I felt a shock. A strange, furious Energy coursing through my body in one brief moment. A thunderbolt had reached my body and my soul and had unearthed my roots from the ground. I froze. My breath caught in my throat. And, just as suddenly, it was over. I breathed out and there was Nothing left- no proof of what had just happened. Not even pain. I'm not even sure I felt it physically… But it had happened.
I know it might sound ilogical; but in my mind, and in this place, the things you see and hear are as true and untrue as what you feel and believe.
My parents had seemingly not noticed anything as they walked ahead with the employee- leaving me behind. Not that I noticed at the time. It was hard to notice anything. Do you know that light-headed, dark and fuzzy feeling when you stand up too fast and everything starts spinning? It was like that. Except it was more… intense. It just my head playing tricks; it was my whole body, my mind, and the world around me. It was as if my mind had been separated from the real world, which was spinning away at an incredible speed. Far, far, far, too fast for my desperate hold.
And the ground underneath me was gone- I was falling. And my vision was black and blurry- with bright flashes of colours. And there was a ringing in my ears. And, and- Was I ever going to see again? Was I going deaf?
"CAAAW!"
Welp, apparently not.

Dubrovnik, Croatia
We traveled overnight to Dubrovnik. The sea was rougher, and made for a nice hammock like motion as we were sleeping - I loved it!!
We set an alarm as we had an early start (8am) for our Game of Thrones tour.
We were docked at the Port of Dubrovnik, and a bus came to pick us up for the tour in the Old Town. Felt odd to disembark via a staircase!
Our tour guide was Lydijia (Lydia). Dubrovnik is a sprawling port city. Lydijia said her family is one of about 100 that still live within the walls of the old city, otherwise accommodations have been turned into AirBnB rentals. She was a perfect tour guide, with such deep pride in Croatia, but specifically Dubrovnik! She described the people as “Slavic but Roman Catholic,” I’m not sure what the means. And she was most proud that a team from here are the Water polo world champions.
We passed a beautiful villa / mansion and she said that was commandeered to use as military headquarters during WWII, and is now the police headquarters. Families that owned property before, didn’t necessarily get it back, they call this “victims of the system.” She listed a number of ways that Dubrovnik has always been progressive: 1418 abolished slavery (trade was wheat from Baltic traded for gold in Spain, which was used to buy slaves in Africa. They were the first in the world to quarantine patients with the plague (to the island in the harbor), they Welcomed Jews cast out from other areas in Europe. She to,d us the town curse is to always “be polite, but never sincere.” Some kind of “kill ‘em with kindness” I guess?
We learned of the Saint Blaise, Patron Saint of wool and ENT disorders. We also learned that the origin of the world “blazer” describes the way the peeled the skin from his chest when he was killed. That’s an image you can’t get out of your mind!
Settlement in Dubrovnik dates back to 872, and its name roughly translates from “ forest of the oaks.”
Like many places in the area, this has been 45 years on UNECSCO list. The old town is a former Merchant trading port, with am impressive wall built from 1100-1500. demonstrate commitment to preserve the freedom. Round towers were added to minimize damage from cannonballs
2011 Game of Thrones was just one of many movies/series filmed here. No one knew what a phenomenon it would be. Lydijia said she was always a fan of Science Fiction and the Supernatural, but especially because so much of GOT was filmed here, she and her friends geeked out over the show, figuring out which locations were shown, and how the scene had been modified using CGI. She had a notebook full of scenes, and would hold it up aligned with the setting and would say: “see this arch over Jon Snow’s head?” Or a scene where Daenerys Targaryen was looking for her dragon eggs and she was on the island, but then a structure appeared that is actually a turret on the top of the wall.
I’m a GOT fan and enjoyed seeing “Kings Landing” and I really loved Lydijia’s enthusiasm, but it got to be a little too much for me. She did a nice job of pointing out churches and museums within the old town, but I would have preferred a little more history of the actual town (different excursion!).
She led us up a portion of the wall, but was careful about too much too fast as several in our group have limited mobility. We should have left the group at that point as we’d have gone further and faster on our own. We started this tour early, at 8am, which was great as we had many of the views to ourselves, but as noon approached, the old town was packed. You have to walk the walls in just one direction, which is great, but there was still a lot of jockeying for a position to walk in, and impossible to get a photo without some blocking your view!
When the tour was over, most opted for staying in town to shop or have lunch. There were shuttle buses back to the ship every 30 minutes which was wonderful! We rode the bus back with Lydijia, and went to the restaurant for lunch - salads and burgers. After lunch, we retreated to the quiet of our cabin, a nice respite. The forecast had been for rain today, and we lucked out in the morning with no rain and moderate temperatures.
We rested / read / wrote for about two hours, then headed to the onboard gym. We were surprised to see it had rained! I did 30 minutes on the elliptical and another thirty on the rowing machine, while Jeff lifted weights before going out to walk laps on the deck.
We cleaned up and headed to early dinner (6:30pm). The restaurant was nearly empty, but we sat with two ladies, cousins from Florida. Their fathers are brothers, originally from Honduras. They moved to the states, and both became Baptist Missionaries, so the families had a very interesting upbringing in Latin and South America!
After dinner we headed to the lounge. The band played mostly mellow tunes to a small crowd for about an hour, so we danced a bit (we remember about 3% of what we’d learned in over 12 years of lessons, but what we can do always wows the crowd, which cracks me up). The band took a break, then came back for “Banderoke,” Karaoke with a live band. We’d seen this several times with the Gomers in Madison! As expected, it was quite entertaining with a wide range stretching from very talented passengers (or brave ones that did a very good job), mixed in with several that were absolutely terrible (and possibly didn’t know it). A young man named Ross came up towards the end, asked if he could borrow the guitar, and took control of the band. He was really great, and it showcased the talent of the band to play along with him. Really fun (and late) night!

5 Must Have Pieces of Clothing for Male Travellers
5 Must Have Pieces of Clothing for Male Travellers We all know that when you set off on your travels you’ll end up packing far too many clothes that you probably won’t wear or don’t need, especially if it is your first long-haul trip or holiday. Well, this article is just a handy guide to help you cut down on some of the useless items you shouldn’t pack, all you have to do is make sure you have these 5 items in your backpack and you will be good to go in most situations. 5 Must-Have Pieces of Clothing for Male Travellers Jeans Jeans are a very important item that you should bring with you no matter where you’re going in the world. A comfortable pair of jeans can see you through any journeys or adventures you have, if you need to walk miles around a thousand-year-old temple or decide to hit the shops for a day, whatever the situation you can make sure you do it in comfort is the most important thing for any traveler. Polo Shirts You may be thinking why do I need to bring a polo shirt with me when I’m planning on trekking through a forest or touring around the Mekong Delta. Well obviously you wouldn’t be wearing a polo shirt at that exact moment in time but I’m talking about if you find yourself in a situation where you’ve got a bit of downtime like you want to relax for a bit with friends, you’re going out for a meal at a restaurant or having a drink at a local bar. For any of these situations then a polo shirt should be the go-to option as it’s cool if you’re in a hot country, it's practical for most situations and you’ll look good at the same time. See here for some stylish polo shirts that would be ideal to take with you on your travels. Swimming Trunks This should be an obvious one especially if the countries you’re traveling to are hot, as taking a dip in a pool or going for a swim in some crystal blue waters somewhere is 100% going to happen. Maybe you want a day sunbathing on the beach or chilling out by the pool in your hotel (if you’re staying at a hotel that has a pool) in which case swimming trunks will be the first thing you go to put on. Rain Coat Don’t underestimate how important this item is, even if you’re going to some tropical paradise as even the nicest, most idyllic places have rain. Whether that’s a tropical thunderstorm, a light shower or it might just be that particular country's rainy season you don’t want to be caught out as that is a surefire way to put anyone in a bad mood, not to mention the hassle of having to dry all your clothes out. So the easy way to avoid this problem is simply to make sure you pack a raincoat so you don’t have to worry about any of these problems. Walking Shoes I’ve saved the most important till last as a good pair of walking shoes are by far the most important piece of clothing anyone needs at any point in their travels. In my opinion, you should definitely get a good pair of trainers before you leave as this gives you the chance to break them in easily while you still have the opportunity to. Trust me when I say there’s nothing worse than having to walk in an uncomfortable pair of shoes for miles because you’ve got no other option. So make sure the shoes you take are as comfortable as you can find, your feet will thank you for it. via Blogger https://ift.tt/sWQ6Prv February 18, 2023 at 09:58PM
