Longtime advice columnist E. Jean Carroll accuses Trump of sexual assault in 1990s

A longtime advice columnist has accused President Trump of sexually assaulting her in a New York City dressing room two decades ago, saying the episode ended only after “a colossal struggle” with the then-businessman.

New York magazine on Friday published the allegations by columnist E. Jean Carroll, as part of an excerpt from her forthcoming book in which she accuses Trump, and multiple other men, of improper sexual behavior. She alleged the Trump incident occurred at the department store Bergdorf Goodman in either the fall of 1995 or the spring of 1996. Carroll is known for her “Ask E. Jean” column, which runs in Elle magazine.

Trump on Friday released a lengthy statement vehemently denying the allegations: “I’ve never met this person in my life. She is trying to sell a new book — that should indicate her motivation. It should be sold in the fiction section.”

In the excerpt, Carroll, who had a daily advice show at the time, said Trump recognized her and asked for her help choosing a gift. She said they eventually made their way into the lingerie section, and then a dressing room.

“The moment the dressing-room door is closed, he lunges at me, pushes me against the wall, hitting my head quite badly and puts his mouth against my lips,” Carroll wrote.

In explicit detail, Carroll wrote that Trump held her against a wall and pulled down her tights.

“The next moment, still wearing correct business attire, shirt, tie, suit jacket, overcoat, he opens the overcoat, unzips his pants, and, forcing his fingers around my private area, thrusts his penis halfway — or completely, I’m not certain — inside me,” she said. “It turns into a colossal struggle.”

Eventually, Carroll claimed, she was able to break away.

“I finally get a knee up high enough to push him out and off and I turn, open the door, and run out of the dressing room,” she said. “The whole episode lasts no more than three minutes.”

Carroll acknowledged in the excerpt that she did not report it to the authorities at the time. She said she has been reluctant to come forward until now out of fear of “being dismissed, being dragged through the mud.”

In a fiery statement, the president said “shame on those who make up false stories of assault to try to get publicity for themselves, or sell a book, or carry out a political agenda.” Trump said “people should pay dearly for such false accusations.”

Mexico murder rate reaches all-time high

Mexico saw a record number of murders in the first six months of the year, with an average 94 killings each day, according to the Mexico News Daily.

The news outlet, citing figures from the Secretariat of Security and Citizens Protection, noted that June saw the most murders of any month on record, with more than 3,000 people killed.

The violence has reached such a fever pitch that Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who was sworn into office in December, has decided to send the National Guard to some areas, including Mexico City, a controversial move that critics say will not solve the high homicide rate and will instead lead to abuses.

Among the areas in the country with the most homicides are Mexico City, Veracruz, Chihuahua and Jalisco, the news outlet reported.

The state with the highest murder rate is Guanajuato, where the Jalisco New Generation and Santa Rosa de Lima cartels are engaged in a power struggle, according to the BBC.

For years, Mexico relied on the military to confront organized crime, in some cases even disbanding local police forces because they had been infiltrated by cartels.

The rise in homicides stands in contrast to the vow made by Lopez Obrador’s campaign promise to reduce violence in the country.

House GOP leader sides with AOC on pay hike, says Congress at risk of being only for millionaires

Name a topic, and chances are good that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., are on opposite sides.

But now McCarthy appears to agree with AOC that members of Congress deserve a pay raise. Without a salary increase, McCarthy says, only millionaires will be able to serve.

The top Republican in the House made the comments this week as lawmakers scrapped the bill over the possible backlash from increasing salaries for themselves and their staffs.

“When you talk this subject about COLA, a cost-of-living increase, it does invoke an emotion, kind of an impulsive emotion,” McCarthy told reporters, according to the Washington Examiner.

“I think it’s one that we should pause and look at. It’s been more than 10 years in the process. The current study says that pay has decreased by 15 percent. I do not want Congress at the end of the day to only be a place that millionaires serve. This should be a body of the people.”

Members of Congress generally make $174,000 per year, with senior leaders earning more, and no cost-of-living adjustments have been made in the past nine years.

Last month, some vulnerable swing-state Democrats, concerned how the proposed $4,500 pay hike would look if it didn’t also have Republican support, had signed onto amendments rejecting a similar measure to increase their pay.

Xi Jinping Will Make First Visit to North Korea Ahead of Meeting With Trump

BEIJING — President Xi Jinping of China plans to visit North Korea later this week, his first trip there as president and a surprise move shortly before President Trump and Mr. Xi are expected to meet at an economic summit.

The North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, has visited China four times in the past year. But Mr. Xi, 66, who is one of the most traveled Chinese presidents, has been reluctant to honor the 35-year-old Mr. Kim by going to the North, a country that is right next door to China.

China and North Korea have had a fraught relationship for decades, making Mr. Xi’s sudden visit, the first by a Chinese president in 14 years to the North, even more unforeseen.

Some Chinese analysts said they believed Mr. Xi was visiting the North to help revive the unsuccessful disarmament talks between Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim in Hanoi, Vietnam, in February. China’s state media said Mr. Xi would stay in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, for two days, on Thursday and Friday.

Mr. Xi could then deliver a plan for North Korea talks to Mr. Trump when they meet in Osaka, Japan, on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit meeting on June 28, said Cheng Xiaohe, a North Korea expert at Renmin University in Beijing.

With tensions sky high between the United States and China over trade, Mr. Xi could give Mr. Trump “a beautiful present” on resuming of talks over the North’s nuclear arsenal, Mr. Cheng said.

Other officials focused more on relations between China and North Korea. The Communist Party’s International Department said the visit of Mr. Xi would “inject new momentum” into the relationship, the state broadcaster CCTV said.

Mr. Xi’s trip would come 70 years after the start of diplomatic relations between the North and China, CCTV said. A year later, in 1950, China began fighting alongside North Koreans against the United States in the Korean War.

North Korea has long looked to China to intercede for it on the world stage. But after the North staged successful missile and nuclear tests, China voted in favor of tougher economic sanctions against the country, a position that has rankled Mr. Kim.

Still, China remains North Korea’s most important ally, and has sometimes helped Mr. Kim by looking the other way as oil has been delivered to the North in violation of international sanctions.

The sudden arrival of Mr. Xi in North Korea would not necessarily mean any improvement in the brittle relationship between China and the North, said Evans J.R. Revere, a fellow at the Brookings Institution.

“I am certain that Beijing demanded a price from Pyongyang for the visit — no provocations,” such as missile tests, Mr. Revere said. “The North Koreans don’t need the Chinese to deliver messages to Trump about possible talks; they have a direct channel.”

Mr. Xi would be a useful conduit for the North Koreans to convey “assurances” to Mr. Trump about North Korean intentions, Mr. Revere said.
