North America Non-Residential Polished Concrete Market Trends, Segmentation and Registering a Strong Growth by 2028
The North America non-residential polished concrete market is estimated to witness substantial expansion by 2028 on account of large-scale construction of non-residential buildings across the region. In addition, rising awareness regarding numerous benefits associated with the use of polished concrete is likely to foster industry adoption over the forecast period.
Polished concrete floors are created using a mechanical process of grinding and polishing with the aid of a penetrant chemical to create a variety of textures. Concrete polishing is a multi-step process that necessitates the use of specialized techniques and equipment. Polished concrete offers several benefits, including enhanced natural lighting, better durability, mold and insect resistance, easy maintenance, sustainability, and aesthetic appearance. Burgeoning number of commercial construction projects have augmented industry uptake in recent years.

Summary: Aelin Galathynius had a hand in just about every illegal dealing in all of Terrasen. Weapons, drugs, organized crime, the black market, blackmail, assassination, coercion, bribery–you name it, she was almost definitely connected to it. The only problem? Nobody could prove it.
Rowan Whitethorn, fresh out of Terrasen’s elite special forces academy–known only as Doranelle for secrecy–was convinced he could unmask Aelin Galathynius. So convinced, in fact, that he’d managed to obtain special orders from his commander to do just that. The only problem? He had exactly three hundred and sixty-five days. If he couldn’t prove Aelin Galathynius guilty in one year’s time, he’d be booted down to corporal in disgrace.
Something neither Aelin nor Rowan could have expected, though, was each other. When their paths cross–and oh, their paths will cross–who will come out ahead?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At precisely eight o’clock a.m. each morning, the polished chrome elevator doors swished open with a ping, and a pair of patent-leather stiletto heels so shiny you could see your reflection in the material clicked with brisk, deadly efficiency across the hardwood flooring of Galathynius, Incorporated.
Located on the top five floors of one of downtown Orynth’s most prestigious office buildings, the technology company had risen to the top percentile of its field quietly, its success largely thanks to years of hard work by the late Rhoe Galathynius and Evalin Ashryver. Upon their passing, their only daughter–Aelin Ashryver Galathynius–inherited the whole company.
Less than six months after she took over, Galathynius, Inc. was the uncontested leader of its field, perhaps the head of all the businesses in Orynth, perhaps even in all of Terrasen. Her employees, to a person, were either completely terrified or completely starstruck of her. Aelin took that as a compliment. She’d worked hard to build her image; she wasn’t about to break it for some sniveling intern who couldn’t take a word of criticism. Besides, who ever heard of a crime boss that was all sunshine and rainbows? She had an image to uphold, both professionally and…well, less professionally.
Better the innocent, unsuspecting employees of Galathynius, Inc. think her an unapproachable CEO than a cold-blooded criminal.
Galathynius, Inc. was a perfectly legitimate business, despite the foul rumors that claimed it was nothing more than a facade for criminal activity. Aelin snorted every time she read a new theory in the news or the tabloids, each claim somehow more outrageous than the last. In the four years since she’d become CEO, she’d seen them all: nepotism, daddy’s money, buying out the competition, bribery, affairs, selling her body for prestige, and more. She even had a few of the funnier ones tacked to her corkboard, blocky headlines about “GALATHYNIUS CEO CAUGHT AFTER MESSY NIGHT OUT!!!” paired with grainy, badly edited photos that were obviously not her making her laugh each time she saw them.
Aelin kept her personal office on the top floor, a floor reserved specifically for her and her board of trustees, all of whom were close associates in both businesses. She had a work office on the floor below and used that for all the mundane workday things–endless meetings, strategy sessions, presentations, and the like–but her top-floor office was her personal one. The only people who came to see her there were Elide, Lysandra, Ansel, and anyone she needed to…impress.
There was a reason that the boss’s office had tile flooring.
As always, Aelin stepped into Galathynius, Inc’s offices at precisely eight o’clock, her five-inch stiletto heels clicking over the hardwood flooring. She was greeted, as usual, with a ripple of “good morning, ma’am” and other similar greetings from her employees, and she offered her usual small nod as she strode to the private elevator at the back of the office, ascending to the second floor for the Monday morning planning meeting.
“Talk to me,” she commanded, sweeping through the sliding glass doors of the conference room. Elide, the chief of operations, nodded, tipping her head at the director of marketing, who stood up and tapped on her tablet, projecting the quarter’s projections onto the screen.
“We’re completely on track for this quarter, expected to turn a profit at…”
Aelin mostly tuned out the woman’s monologue, focusing on the numbers on the screen and the few details she picked out that sounded most important or interesting. “And the Cortland acquisition?”
“The Cortlands and their attorney will be meeting you tomorrow at eleven to finalize the terms of the merger,” Ansel replied. The redhead was Aelin’s attorney, and a kickass one at that.
“Excellent.” Aelin stood. “Thank you, everyone.” She strode out, got back into the elevator, and went up to her work office, leaving a trail of huge-eyed employees in her wake. They tended to get that look whenever she passed close by.
After confirming that her schedule for the day was clear, Aelin picked up her dark brown leather briefcase and walked across the hall into the upper-level meeting room, a much smaller space that was used mostly for random storage. All the better for her to conceal the top-floor access door there. She slipped behind a row of file cabinets, touched a button on the remote hidden in her pocket, and pressed her thumb to the small black screen that slid out of its hiding place in the wall. The screen flashed green, and with a soft mechanical whirr, the hidden door slid open, and Aelin stepped through. At the top of the secret stairs was another thumbprint-locked door, this one opening into a short, well-lit hallway with a single mahogany door at the end.
The bronze plate on the door simply read Galathynius. One name. One hell of a reputation.
Dropping her briefcase on one of the cushioned chairs in front of her desk, Aelin dropped into her seat, opened her personal laptop–heavily encrypted, of course–and clicked through a maze of innocuous folders before locating the file she wanted. It took her a minute and a half, but she hadn’t clawed her way to this position by taking risks. She let her cursor hover over the file for a few seconds before clicking it.
Opening <Spicy_Romance_Recommendations.xlsx>
Aelin didn’t often consider herself prideful, but she had to admit, that was one of her most clever moves. Nobody who tried to break into her computer would open a file with that name, primarily because it was public knowledge that Aelin Galathynius was a big fan of smutty romances–the less plot, the better. She knew full well that everyone she worked with would likely rather die than read her indecent thoughts about her favorite romance novels.
This file, though, was hardly romantic. It contained several encoded lists of Aelin’s most important not-entirely-legal dealings–shipments, targets, and the like. Needless to say, if anyone other than herself or her inner circle ever got their hands on this file, she would probably be completely screwed. Hence the encoding.
Right on cue, Elide’s distinctive knock sounded on the other side of the door.
Aelin snapped her fingers, disarming the door’s protective protocol. “Come in, Ells.”
Elide Lochan, who was probably the smartest person Aelin knew, strode into the office, her six-inch-heeled boots making her almost as tall as Aelin naturally was. “Mornin’, boss.”
“What’s new around town?”
Elide smirked and took a seat in the comfortable armchair across from Aelin. “Hmm, nothing much. There’s a delivery for Kingsflame today at 14:20, Cortlands are meeting you tomorrow–you knew that–and oh, PD’s after whoever so graciously sprang a certain Mr. Allsbrook from prison the other night.” She raised a perfectly plucked brow at the blonde. “I don’t suppose you have any intel about the prison break, do you?”
Aelin pressed her left hand flat against her chest. “My dear Miss Lochan, I have absolutely no idea what happened! Who could possibly have had the skills, time, and influence to slip such a criminal as Ren Allsbrook from national prison?”
“I swear, you could bullshit the gods themselves,” Elide chuckled. “Right, then. He’s safe?”
“Laying as low as low can get,” Aelin confirmed. “I have my reasons, Ells.”
“Of course.” Elide swiped across her tablet. “Oh–one more thing.”
“Yeah?”
The petite woman’s eyes glittered with dangerous cold. “Do you have room in your schedule for a night meeting–say 20, 2100–at the plant?”
A serpentine smile that had made innumerable people piss themselves crawled across Aelin’s scarlet-painted lips. “The boss always has room for that.”
~
The siren’s blaring screech jerked Rowan Whitethorn rudely from his deep sleep, and he cursed filthily, swearing at the gods-fucking-damned alarms for going off at this gods-fucking-damned hour of the morning. Night? He couldn’t say. Too damned early. On autopilot, he shoved himself out of bed and into uniform, sliding his handgun into his thigh holster and grabbing his Kevlar vest, then splashed some freezing water on his face to shock him into wakefulness and hurried off to the briefing room.
A hum of conversation, most of it pocked with muttered curses, filled the large space.
Rowan dropped into a chair next to his close friend and squad partner, Lorcan Salvaterre. The dark-haired man, who was even taller and grouchier than Rowan, barely spared him half a glance.
“The hell’s all this?” Rowan asked.
Lorcan shrugged. “Damned if I know.” He flicked a look around the soldiers close by and leaned closer to Rowan’s ear, lowering his voice. “Rumor is they found another body.”
Rowan swore. “Same M.O.?”
“Yep. And,” Lorcan shot Rowan a very significant look, “I’ve heard it showed up at the dead guy’s own property. Surrounded by a shitload of–”
“Attention! Now!” The commander’s order cut off whatever Lorcan had been about to say.
Two hundred of Terrasen’s deadliest special forces, each soldier highly trained and capable of several thousand ways of killing a person, snapped to attention, facing the front of the room, where the squadron commander stood. His hands were clasped behind his back and his face was tight, a barely noticeable flicker in the corner of his jaw marking how hard he was clenching his teeth.
“This won’t be long,” Commander Gavriel Ashryver said once the room had come to complete attentive silence. Gav had been Rowan and Lorcan’s captain when they were in training; he could be damn demanding, but he was an excellent leader. He’d been named commander a couple of years ago when the former one died. “As I’m sure most of you know, we’ve found another body.” He grimaced. “More accurately, Orynth PD has found another body. Same M.O. as every other one we’ve discovered in the last year or so.” He pressed a button on the tiny remote in his hand.
On the projection screen, a series of images flared to life. Rowan’s sharp gaze scanned the photos, picking up all the details of the man who’d been found dead. Red hair, gray eyes, six foot one, a hundred and eighty-seven pounds, lean build, a handful of characteristic scars. Fifty-two years old at time of death.
“Name’s Arobynn Hamel,” Gav continued.
No amount of training could have kept down the ripple of shock that raced through the room.
Arobynn Hamel was a known gangster, drug trafficker, smuggler, and otherwise notorious criminal who’d been evading law enforcement for years, if not decades. The oily bastard had been linked to a rather thick file full of crimes during his lifetime; special forces hadn’t been the only ones trying to get their hands on him.
Gav allowed the shock to die down, then went on. “His corpse was found at his own warehouse at approximately 0500 this morning. Orynth PD reports they discovered the body surrounded by multiple large containers of cocaine.” He clicked the remote again, bringing up the police images of the crime scene–which was, in one word, brutal.
“Fuck,” Rowan murmured under his breath.
“According to PD reports, Hamel had been dead for at least three hours when his body was discovered. We’ll have the morgue’s full report by this afternoon, but initial inspection showed bruises, lacerations, lesions, and burn marks on the body, with the fatal wound undoubtedly being the severed jugular veins and carotid arteries.” Gav paused, waiting a moment for the news to settle. “As for the cocaine found with the body, it’s definitely Hamel’s. Identical bags were found on the property when PD swept it, and at least one of the bags by the body bore fingerprints identified as one of Hamel’s close associates, a criminal known as Graves.”
Why the hell would he have been stupid enough to leave prints? Rowan asked himself, turning over the details in his mind.
Gav swept his gaze over the room, probably noticing the calculation in Rowan’s face. “As of now, this remains an Orynth PD case. However, the most recent communication with the PD chief confirmed that we may be asked to join if–”
“Sir!” A soldier burst through the briefing room doors, a small red slip of paper in his hand. “An urgent message from Orynth PD, sir. Pardon the interruption.”
“Excused.” Gav snatched the paper and read the brief message. “Fuck.” He snapped his attention back to the room. “You’re all dismissed.”
The soldiers streamed out of the briefing room, most of them probably headed back to the barracks to catch another few hours of sleep before the day actually started. Rowan was almost out the door when his itch to say something got the better of him and he stopped, turning back to approach the commander.
“I said dismissed, Whitethorn,” Gav said when Rowan approached.
Rowan saluted. “Yes, sir, you did. I have something to suggest though, sir.”
Gav exhaled sharply. “Speak.”
“Sir, I believe the murders are connected–”
“We already knew that, soldier.” Gav’s jaw was locked. “Say something useful or I’ll have you on patrol for the next eight hours.” He headed out of the briefing room, stalking towards his office.
Rowan followed. “It’s Galathynius, sir. I know it is. Behind the murders.”
“Show me some proof,” Gav returned. “I’m not discrediting your theory, soldier. But it’s nothing more than conjecture until you have concrete proof.”
Rowan scratched the back of his neck. “That’s the problem, sir. I…I don’t have concrete proof.” He raised his hands before Gav could dismiss him. “But I can get proof, I swear. I just need time, sir.”
Gav raised a brow. “You want me to assign you to this case?” He walked into his office, gesturing for Rowan to follow him.
“I, uh–”
“When we’ve only been asked to be quietly involved?” He closed the door.
Rowan said nothing.
Gav shook his head slowly. “I admire your eagerness, Whitethorn, but at this moment I can’t send anyone headlong into this mess.”
“Then when, sir?” Rowan pressed. “If not now, when will I–we–be able to prove that it’s Galathynius behind the murders? Hell, probably behind the whole damn crime ring.”
“You’re verging mighty close on insolence, Whitethorn,” Gav warned.
Rowan clenched his fists behind his back and shut up.
Gav sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose like he always did when he was working through a shitload of information in his mind. “I’m telling you this as your former captain, Whitethorn, and if word of this gets out, I’ll have you flogged and on KP for the next damn decade. Clear?” Rowan nodded. “I’ve just received word that Graves has also been found dead.”
Rowan gasped sharply. “Same M.O. as Hamel?”
Gav nodded tightly. “Severed throat, battered body. Pretty nasty crime scene, too.” He fixed Rowan with a piercing stare. “PD officially requests one special forces officer for the investigation.”
Not daring to hope he’d be chosen, Rowan just nodded. Please trust me, he screamed internally.
“Against my better judgment–” Gav sat down at his desk and scrawled his signature onto a document that he passed to Rowan. “I’m assigning you to the investigation.”
“Thank you, sir,” Rowan breathed, folding the document neatly and tucking it into his vest.
“Whitethorn.” Gav’s voice was steely.
“Sir?”
“You have one year.” The words were absolutely final. “One year, Whitethorn. If you can’t prove Galathynius is guilty, I’ll have your ass busted down to corporal and shipped off to Eyllwe. Clear?”
“Yes, sir!” Rowan saluted sharply.
“Good. Dismissed.”
Rowan turned on his heel and left Gav’s office, heading quickly back to his room in the barracks, where he stripped off his gear and took a good look at the letter Gav had given him. It was a simple clearance document, identifying him and his position with the investigative team should anyone ask too many questions and need proof that he was supposed to be there. Good. All in order.
Kneeling on the floor, Rowan reached underneath his mattress and pulled out a manila envelope full of news clippings, photos, images, screenshots, and his own scrawled notes, a year’s worth of info collected from the string of brutal murders that kept cropping up. Each new murder was a known criminal or gangster, someone the law had been trying to capture for years without success. Each followed the same pattern–brutally beaten (probably tortured), throat slashed, body found on the dead man’s property, surrounded by cold hard evidence of his crimes. According to what Rowan knew and had found from the media, only one person could possibly have any motive to take out every notorious criminal in Terrasen.
Aelin Galathynius.
Rowan knew–he just knew–Galathynius was the one. The CEO had charmed the public into believing she was just a particularly savvy businesswoman, which she was. But rumors, gossip, and other, darker sources whispered about her ruthlessness, her cunning, her willingness to do anything to see her business at the top. Those sources also whispered about another business–a much less legal one.
Rumor had it Aelin Galathynius led a criminal organization of her own, and she was taking out her rivals with a heartlessness that even Rowan had to admit was impressive. Either way, the woman was guilty.
And he, Rowan Whitethorn, was going to prove it.
The World of Spy x Family: Spy Radios
We don’t see a ton of Twilight/WISE’s spy gear in the show, and even less of the SSS’s counterintelligence gear, but what we do see blows me away. The attention to detail in this anime and manga is impressive. I’ve been able to research and clearly identify everything except the WISE HQ set of screens/radios (mostly bc we only get a zoomed out perspective of that), and it all matches up to what would have been used during the Cold War and in West and East Germany.
Let’s start with Twilight’s own radio kit. In the manga it looks like this:
And in the anime it’s practically identical, with only a few knobs and things moved around:
Now, it’s not exactly identical to it’s real-world counterpart, but it’s astoundingly close. The Spy x Family version just looks a little sleeker.
This is an ESK-52/Type 41 Amateur Radio Set, produced by the West German company Telefunken for the West German Intelligence Service, or the Bundesnachrictdienst. It was first produced in 1952,and was primarily used during the Cold War.
The Type 41 is a type of stay-behind radio set, used by spies who stayed behind in other countries to gather intelligence. For secrecy reasons, spy radios were often marketed as “amateur radio sets” to make them seem less suspicious. The Type 41 comes inside a suitcase, and is fully capable of both receiving and transmitting morse code messages over radio frequencies. It came equipped with headphones that look very similar to the ones portrayed in Spy x Family:
And now for the SSS. In Episode/Chapter 1, when Anya accidentally sends the message with her location and a challenge. In the manga, we can barely see it because of all the speech bubbles, but here’s what we can see:
The anime gives us a much clearer shot:
This one looks pretty close to its real-world counterpart, the R-353. You can see that the anime/manga simplified things a little bit, but overall they look very similar:
The R-353 was a Soviet-manufactured spy radio set, also used by other Warsaw Pact countries, such as East Germany. In East Germany, it was used by the government, and by the Stasi in particular.
The R-353 was one of the most sophisticated Cold War Soviet spy radios, with the capability to receive and send morse code signals over radio frequencies, which could be sent manually, semi-automatically with the numerical dial, or completely automatically by magnetic tape.
Now, on to the tricky part: WISE HQ. Here’s what it looks like in the manga:
and in the anime:
As of yet, I’ve been unable to concretely identify anything in these pictures, although I strongly suspect the the cabinets with rotors are Bombe Machines, which look like this:
Bombe machines were used to brute-force the Enigma machine during WW2, and i’m not sure how WISE would have got a hold of any, since every single Bombe machine the British had was destroyed after the war to maintain secrecy. Perhaps WISE got a hold of a Polish Bombe machine and are trying to break Ostania’s ciphers?
Trying to play I Spy with the radios and other equipment in these panels/screencaps of WISE HQ has been tricky. The shots are all zoomed out, making it nearly impossible to see any identifiers. My best guess is a combination of radio transceivers (transmitter/receiver combination) and Telex machines (teletypewriters - think telegraph but combined with a typewriter and outputting ASCII characters rather than Morse code).
Without more detailed and close-up shots of the equipment in WISE HQ, I can’t make any guesses as to the specifics of the machines.
In conclusion, I continue to be blown away by the attention to detail in this series, in both the anime and manga. Even things we see maybe once or twice are very well thought-out, and there are so many layers to dig through, from the geography all the way to the spy gadgets that have maybe ten seconds of screentime or one manga panel.
Edit: all info on the historical spy gear i talked about can be found at cryptomuseum.com. I highly recommend checking it out if you’re interested, they have done a very thorough job of documenting things.
#spy x family#spy x family meta#meta analysis#lea over-analyzes fictional stuff again#in all seriousness there's so much to dig into here#i'm not great at the politics/plot analysis#but hot damn can i analyze the language geography and spy stuff#just you wait until i post about the cryptography
Trouble in the Docks
It was deep dark in Max’s garage, deep dark like cracking your shinbone on the edge of a table in the middle of the night, dark. Wasn’t quiet though, which was a good thing to cover my quick breathing and the scuffing of my boots. It was never quiet down the docks, not really. All hours of the day and night there was banging and clanging as people did their working and ships came in and out. There was a crooning too, a soft, crackly voice from one of them old school transistor radios. Real trendy to have stuff like that which pretends to be old analogue earth-side tech but really it’s not. I wouldn’t have figured old Max to be the type, but that just goes to show you never really know what’s in people’s inside parts.
Upside of the lack of quiet was no one would hear me, probably. Downside was, I wouldn’t hear no one either. I had cracked the lock on the front door easy enough, squeezed under the roller door without having to push it too far up. I didn’t think Max would be in the garage this late, and with all the lights off, but couldn’t be too careful so I stayed in the dark as I creepied my way across the polished concrete floor. What a wanker. This shit was just asking to get covered in scratches. The shapes of ship parts loomed up around me like beasts out of story tales, and I could almost feel them breathing. Hard to tell what they were with it so dark though. I’d heard tell my buddy Max here had a real genuine portside plasma rifle in here. I didn’t have any real use for a flashy, shiny ass gun like that myself, but the thing could be sold for big credits on the black market. People liked to have a bit of artillery when they were heading into Wildspace. If I could get my hands on it, sit on it for a few cycles and offload it, I might be able to get the credits I needed for my jump drive. Maybe.
Time was ticking on by and I still had no right idea where the rifle was, so I figured I’d better give myself some light. Pulled out my hand torch and covered the end with my palm as I flicked it on. Slowly pulled it away and let the little beam of light flick around the space. Heart was fair pounding in my ears, but I couldn’t hear anything. No sign of movement. Time to get moving. I’d need a gravlift to get the damn thing out of here as well. Thankfully I could see a pile of them stacked neatly near the door. Thanking the big star for Max being a gotdamned neat freak. I walked briskly through the garage, flicking my torch over the neatly stacked racks of tools, the labelled drawers of bolts and resistors. Getting nervous, thinking maybe it wasn’t here at all, my info had been dud but then – there! I spotted it resting against the wall. Perfect.
Jogged back to the gravlifts and grabbed one of the smaller ones, tucking the control into my pocket. Back to the rifle. I put the gravlift on the ground and pulled out the control, flicking it on. Guided up to about halfway up the length of the rifle, just below where I judged the centre of gravity to be. Kept looking over my shoulder, my neck hairs prickling, but there was no one there. Just the scratchy old radio and the sound of my own breaths. I flicked the gravlift to hold, then grabbed the top of the rifle and pulled it down, letting the gravlift act as a fulcrum so I could tip it onto the platform. It wasn’t real heavy like, but big and unwieldly. Plus, couldn’t really be waltzing down the street with a hot plasma rifle under my arm. I grabbed a tarp and threw it over the top, tucking the edges in around the gun. Heart still racing like a two-penny girl in church, I guided the gravlift back towards the garage door. This was going to be the sketch part. If I was gonna get caught, it’d be now. I was gonna have to lift the roller up higher to get the rifle out – and roller doors weren’t renowned for their sneaky. But then I’d be home safe – just a four hundo stroll down the road and back into my own garage.
I took a pause before the door, straining to hear a sound, but there was nothing. I scootched back under the door and checked the street was empty before squatting down and carefully, carefully lifting the door. Inch by inch, until it was high enough. I used the control to drop the gravlift down a smidge and scooted the rifle under the door. Slid through easy as a well-oiled piston. I quickly slid the door shut and started off down the street like I had all the time and nowhere to be. Kept my limbs loose and let the rifle trail along behind me. I was sweating like a lobster in a pot, but there wasn’t anyone else about. Five minutes later I was standing outside my own shop, fumbling my keys into the lock and kicking the roller up to the roof. I hurried the gravlift in and pulled the chain to bring the door closed. It was deep dark here too but I knew my way around this place like the freckles on my arm. The old one too, not the new one.
I flicked on the light switch, revealing my chaotic workspace. I wasn’t quite as neat as Max was, but that was okay. I sure knew where everything was and I got the job done. Genuine clients didn’t give a shit if I had shiny floors. They know better than to think a flash garage gets their ships repaired any quicker. I sent the gravlift scooting over towards the back room, following along behind. I tucked the controller under my arm so I could open the flap on the underside of my cyber arm, and pulled out the cable that coiled around the metallic muscles. Plugged it into the door and waited a second while it processed the code, then the light flashed green and the door opened. It was pretty hectic security for a storeroom, but I didn’t trust folks hereabouts and I trusted the empire less. Especially when I was moving hot tech. It’d be a coupla cycles at least before I could sell the damn rifle, and I couldn’t have it sitting around the shop. All it would take is one snitch and old Max ‘The Redeemer’ would be knocking down my damn door. No thank you. I kicked the door open and drove the gravlift inside, parked it and tossed the control on top. The rest could wait.
I backed out and locked the door behind me. I still felt jazzed and twitchy from my crime and I knew even though it was damn near morning I wouldn’t sleep. Instead I headed down into the dry dock, where the Aethon was waiting for me. I breathed a deep sigh from deep in my belly. She always brought me a feeling of calm inside, a peace feeling that I couldn’t find any other place. Not even fixing on other people’s ships. She had a magic – the magic of memories. It had been a long time, true like, since my rents had died and left me the rickety old shell of a broken down ship, and I’d gone to bed with a starving belly more than once to afford parts for her. But she was nearly finished now. All I needed was the jump drive and I’d be back out in the deep black, nothing around me but stars. Leaving Area 3 way back behind me, and all its shit. Maybe I’d go Wildspace, cut the empire’s claws right out of me. Truth being, I didn’t care much where I went. Just away from here. Somewhere I could be free of the stink of everything I’d suffered here.
I walked along the bridge and climbed the stairs to her underbelly where all her soft parts were exposed. Twiddled a wire or two, tightened a bolt with my cyberarm but truth being she didn’t need it. She spent more time being worked on than flown, and she’d never gone far enough for things to get loose. One day though. If I could get a good price for that plasma rifle maybe I could find a jump somewhere. True hard to get your hands on, especially if you weren’t imperial. Had to find someone illegally junking a ship, or coming back off salvage. They were rare though, so the price was always sky high. There was always some other fancy cur with cash to burn and I never got a look in. But one day. I would get out of here or die trying. I wasn’t going to let my parent’s end, skint broke in this backwater hell, be where I washed up. There had to be a way. And I’d find it. Sure as breathing.
This month I've... accomplished a lot. It's difficult to communicate just how much, because a lot of the work is the kind that isn't exciting to talk about and doesn't look like much... but it is a lot, and it needed to get done. The narrative work I did this month in particular has helped me prepare to finish the full 5-episode saga, not just a new demo or the first episode.
Speaking of the new demo. I originally planned to release it by the end of this year, but it's looking like that was optimistic, considering how much I'm adding from the original demo. New goal is to have it ready for private playtesting by the end of this year, and released publicly early in 2024. Next month I'll confirm if we're still on track for that!
If you'd like sooner updates, or are interested in playtesting, you are welcome to join the Discord server.
Other resources here, including the new website. Now to the devlog!
Highlights for this month:
Updated Mechanics Implemented: I have built a test scene to triage the new mechanics I've built, and functionality is now at the point where I can start rebuilding the demo with them. I am working with playtesters to identify and iron out bugs as I do so.
Finalized Narrative + Art Direction: I have determined which art assets will be inked, and which will remain in pencil. Part of this decision involved making a lot of overarching narrative and thematic details concrete, so while I don't have much to show for it at the moment, it will really pay off when the later episodes release.
Project Management: I now have a part-time job (unrelated to games), and have spent this past month re-learning how to manage my time and keep on track while also getting enough rest. Brief discussion of navigating this adjustment as a solo dev.
Marketing: This month, I really started thinking more about the kind of marketing *I* appreciate as an audience. I've shared social media posts from other indie dev projects - what is it about those posts that communicated to me I would like the games?
Recreation: media I engaged with this month!
Details below.
Updated Mechanics Implemented
I've made improvements, changes, and additions to several core mechanics so that they are flexible enough for me to build a complete game. This has been very complicated because most of the code I wrote for the old demo was very, very limited, and was held together with duct tape that could just barely handle what I built for the demo, and nothing beyond that. So my mission has been to purge the spaghetti and make my scripts able to actually do what I need them to for a more complete game.
It's very easy to get lost on where to start when approaching something like that, so I want to share an approach that really helped me: writing out the intended functionality in just English as comments first, and THEN figuring out how to script it. It's a way of "sketching" code to break down how it will work before getting into the weeds of proper syntax and functionality.
Some specifics on overhauled mechanics:
Movement - movement scripts can now handle things like an obstacle in the middle of the "walkable" area of the screen. There is polish to do but the core functionality is there and easier to iterate on. I've also added some tweaks that make it "smarter" about handling whether you're currently using point-and-click or WASD inputs.
Screen Transitions - this mechanic is MUCH more generalized now. It can handle as many entry/exit points from a screen as needed, so scene layouts can be much more varied. A downtown screen with multiple alleys each leading to different screens is possible now.
Point-and-Click - I made a lot of changes to the point-and-click movement scheme, many of which involved learning how coroutines work; unfortunately, it's still pretty buggy and rough-feeling. I think I made a mistake by trying to make my control scheme support two completely different types of inputs, because it has resulted in two half-polished movement schemes instead of one relatively polished one. However... I cannot bring myself to axe the point-and-click movement scheme, despite WASD currently being more reliable. So I'm going to move forward with the hybrid, and workshop it as I rebuild the demo. The good news is it is at the point where I can safely implement it without breaking anything (hopefully) while I continue to iterate on it. The better news is, even if it's unpolished, I think it makes the game feel very unique.
Menus - I figured out how to track "layering" the two menus (backlog, and settings screen) so it properly handles freezing/unfreezing movement if you open one on top of the other, and I made the placeholder menus/UI nicer looking. Also added audio volume controls.
Virtually everything in this image is just a placeholder, but it's a placeholder that feels much better than what I had before. Sketching this out on paper gave me a template to start building on.
I will be utilizing the "notebook" as a shortcut to view the text backlog, as well:
I have more work to do formatting the backlog, but it works, and a scroll-bar is automatically added once it exceeds the height of the backlog window.
Thanks to building this test scene, I've got all of my test scripts to a place where I feel confident rebuilding the demo with the new mechanics. There's a lot that needs to be tweaked and changed, but it's finally at the point where it feels like replacing the existing demo with the new mechanics is pretty much a clear upgrade. So I'm excited to get started on that!
Finalized Narrative + Art Direction
In October's devlog, I wrote that determining precisely which assets will be inked and which will remain in pencil was probably this month's most important project. I debated going with a practical approach (such as "ink all assets of this type: talk sprite, interactible, etc") - but I quickly realized that I would have more fun doing something cool with it instead. This turned it from an art direction problem to a narrative problem, which forced me to answer a LOT of questions for myself that I had been putting off until later, because most of these questions will not be unveiled within the scope of Episode 1. They weren't strictly needed to finish just Episode 1 originally; but they would be if Episode 1 were to include an art direction decision that is related to very late-game concepts.
The drawback to this is it took up a lot of time and energy that could have been spent focusing on Episode 1 and finishing the new demo faster and getting a release faster.
The (huge, in my opinion) benefit to this is that Episode 1 is going to be much more effective now, as there are so many things I can set up early on because I already know precisely where I'm going with them. I also just feel more prepared to continue this momentum over the next several years and write the entire narrative, not just the first segment of it. I think the overall experience will be better and more convincing, and that this was an effective use of my time.
I fully expect some things to evolve as I make the other episodes - my experience just in creating the demo has been that some parts of the game truly do write themselves - but I still think this was a very good use of my time this month. It's going to drive me nuts keeping everything I'm planning under wraps for the years until the reveals come, though.
(Which leads me to another very important thing I did this month: called a friend and spoiled literally everything I've been planning to them. I was drawing spoilery fanart of very late-game reveals and needed SOMEONE to spill all of the beans to. The friend in question is an author so they also acted as a very useful brainstorming/sounding board for certain themes I still wasn't sure where to go with... anyway, I cannot recommend this enough. Having just One Dedicated Spoiler Friend has been invaluable.)
Since I spent so much time on the brainstorming part of this, I don't have much to show for it at the moment. I've started inking some more assets, though. Here's Solea (not yet scanned/colored):
Project Management
If you don't read anything else in this section, take away the following: I now have part-time work to offer financial stability and life experience. My real job is developing Amadeus.
Adjusting to being outside of school was difficult, and adjusting to now having a part-time job has also been difficult. However, I am really lucky in that this job is pretty much perfect - it's completely unrelated to games (so ALL of my games and artistic energy can go to Amadeus, not to work), it's part time (so I have much more time to dedicate to Amadeus than I would if I was working full-time), and I like the people there. Thanks to this, I don't have to stress about my financials or a fruitless job hunt, and can focus all of my remaining time and energy to my own projects.
However, having limited free time - even if it's more than I would have if I worked full-time - means project management is even more essential than it was before. It's not just a matter of giving myself deadlines so I get things done, it's a matter of understanding what tasks I can actually accomplish on a given day/week without burning myself out. I find that inking assets is something I am willing to do a little at a time, in bed, before I sleep. Coding is something I'm more than happy to do on lunchbreaks and on my commute. Music composition, however, requires a solid 2-hour block of sitting at my desk with no distractions, and a completely free day afterwards just in case I hit a groove and happen to bang out an entire piece in one afternoon. Learning to work with my own tendencies and not against them is essential to actually getting things done.
One more benefit of my new job is I've learned how to use project management software in a way that works for me to remind myself of what needs doing (especially regular upkeep tasks), in addition to special projects. I've started using it outside of work (on an unrelated, personal account! For the record! Asana is free for small teams!!) to manage Amadeus tasks, and I have to say it has been a game changer. It's really getting me to stay on top of everything that needs doing. I got the advice from several indie devs at SIX to use project management software, and wouldn't you know it, they were right. The folks who actually get enough stuff done to have a demo at SIX know what it takes to get your game made! Who knew??
Marketing
I've been paying more attention to what other indie devs do to advertise their own work. Many aspects of "successful" posts are beyond my control - whether something reaches a wide audience or not depends on too many factors to stress over. So I have decided to focus on what I can control: if the post reaches someone who might like this game, how do I show them that they might like this game?
For the past couple weeks, I've picked a game whose marketing posts I willingly shared on social media because I was excited about the game. I retweeted Small Saga's trailer advertising its upcoming release last week - why? Well, because I watched their trailer video and found it appealing. Why did I watch the video? I don't watch every video on my twitter feed! But something about the trailer footage reminded me of Final Fantasy IX, one of my favorite video games ever made. What, specifically? The character designs and town designs evoked that feeling for me. Then I unmuted the video and really liked the track that was playing, and I decided I wanted to share this.
As a musician, it pains me to say that the music was not remotely close to my first priority when determining whether to share this post. It was a deciding factor, but one that did not come into play until after the visuals had captivated me. The visuals showed me "this game feels like Final Fantasy IX," and that is the hook that got me to stick around for the rest. The trailer succeeded in convincing me, as someone who might like the game, that I might like it. And it did so by letting the game speak for itself. The fact that the font in the trailer matched the aesthetic of the game footage was also a nice bonus.
So last week, I put together a post with a video that was supposed to communicate: "if you like Umineko When They Cry, you might like Amadeus." The same way Small Saga communicated "if you like Final Fantasy IX, you might like Small Saga." I included more of the pure text-based visual novel scenes in this trailer than usual, because Amadeus is turning into more and more of a visual novel the more I flesh out the narrative. I don't know if this accomplished what I hoped it would, but the process of making it taught me a lot.
A couple weeks before this, I based my post off of Cavern of Dreams marketing on Tumblr. Cavern of Dreams appealed to me because its posts told me exactly who it was for: it was for people with a nostalgic love for N64-era platformers. Who is Amadeus for? Well, since I was deep in revamping the point-and-click controls to also allow point-and-spacebar for wrist ease, I made a trailer advertising this accessible input scheme.
I don't pretend to be very good at marketing still, but I've learned a lot just from seeing what other people have done that clicked with me. Marketing, as an indie dev, is really about communication. It's about showing people the heart of what you're making, in a way that lets people who share the same interests find it and enjoy it.
Recreation
3 games to shout out that I played this month:
Burly Men At Sea - an excellent reference for a game with a simple style and focused concept that is really appealing and polished. It's fun, silly, cute, and does what it wants to do extremely well. It's... effectively the opposite of what I am making, which is a game that is scrappy, overly ambitious, and all over the place. But that's okay! It's very grounding to play a game that features strengths completely the opposite of my own.
Once by Moonlight - a short werewolf visual novel here on itch. I don't pretend to think I am the first person to write a visual novel about a werewolf, so I wanted to look at someone else's take on it. I recommend it if you have a couple hours to spare. I took about a page of notes while playing it for my own reference, as both a dev and a storyteller, so you know it's solid!
Tsukihime - I only just started this, but it was a recommendation from a friend after I asked for a VN recommendation that was long enough to binge and go insane over, and preferably had vampires or werewolves. I am certain this will show up under "Recreation" for next month as well, because I can already tell this is going to give me a lot of ideas and influence Amadeus in ways that are yet to be determined. While I myself am not writing a horny visual novel, I also feel it's important to acknowledge that horny visual novels are the backbone and history of the whole genre, so why not play the super iconic one about vampires?
That's a wrap for this month! Next month, my goal is to be able to sum up my entire devlog with "the demo is remade and in private playtesting." Fingers crossed I can hold myself to it. Stay tuned!
Importance of Resume Writing and How HighflySourcing Can Elevate Your Career
In today’s competitive job market, your resume is more than just a document; it’s your personal marketing tool, your professional brand’s first impression, and often your gateway to new career opportunities. Crafting a compelling resume is crucial for making a positive impact on potential employers and securing that coveted interview slot. Here’s why resume writing is so important and how HighflySourcing, a leading visa immigration consultancy, can assist you in this vital process.
Why Resume Writing Matters
1. First Impressions Count
Your resume is often the first interaction a prospective employer has with you. A well-crafted resume not only highlights your qualifications but also demonstrates your ability to communicate effectively. A clear, professional resume sets the tone for how you are perceived, making it more likely that you'll be remembered positively.
2. Showcase Your Unique Value
In a sea of job applicants, a standout resume can help differentiate you from the competition. It’s your chance to showcase your unique skills, experiences, and achievements. A tailored resume highlights what makes you an ideal candidate for a specific role, emphasizing how your background aligns with the job requirements.
3. Reflect Professionalism
A polished resume reflects your attention to detail and professionalism. Spelling errors, poor formatting, and irrelevant information can undermine your credibility. A well-organized resume demonstrates that you take your career seriously and are committed to presenting yourself in the best light.
4. Pass Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)
Many companies use ATS to screen resumes before they reach human eyes. Crafting a resume with the right keywords and format can ensure it passes through these systems and lands in the hands of hiring managers. This requires a strategic approach to resume writing that considers both human and automated review processes.
5. Highlight Achievements and Skills
Your resume is an opportunity to quantify your accomplishments and skills. By highlighting measurable achievements, you can provide concrete evidence of your capabilities and the impact you’ve made in previous roles. This helps potential employers understand the value you can bring to their organization.
[Continued from HERE.]
@holyguardian:
Aerith exhaled a sudden breath accompanied by a smile. It was almost a laugh, almost... but Jae's reputation was hardly something to scoff at. Wall market better knew him as head of The Commis. It was better not to ask too many questions, because the streets already buzzed with stories that painted a gruesome picture.
"Thankyou... for everything." The slums were the home she knew best. Sometimes she thought herself untouchable, but wall market had gang problems a-plenty. Most times their business had no affect on her. But Don Corneo's lackeys were scouting for yet another bride, and she stepped into a case of wrong place wrong time spectacularly. "I won't make a habit of stomping into trouble. For what it's worth, I am sorry if I have complicated things."
Jae kept his hand at the small of Aerith's back as they walked, guiding her through the alleys and to a narrow strip of concrete. Many storefronts had goods delivered at the back of their buildings and this appeared to be a similar spot. There was a single door open, casting bright light into the evening's gloom, steam and smoke pouring from the doorframe as they approached.
They entered what appeared to be the back of the house of a bustling restaurant, passing by wait staff furiously polishing glasses and bussers loading up industrial washing machines with dishes. Turning a sharp right, they were in a massive kitchen with a veritable army of cooks tossing noodles, basting fish, even spooning pineapple fried rice into broad leaves from bamboo to make individual servings.
The staff stood at attention like a row of soldiers as they passed, many voices booming formal greetings in unison:
"Annyeong-haseyo, Chef!"
Yoon didn't spare them a glance but nodded in general, drawling an informal 'Annyeong~' in response.
They passed numerous storage areas and walk-in fridges, though the freezer door was open as two burly men struggled with what appeared to be large cuts of meat wrapped in plastic, as well as a travel cooler dripping a meandering trail of blood across the tiled floor.
"Ya, what the fuck are you doing? Get that shit cleaned up!" he barks out angrily, kicking one of the butchers on the outside of his thigh.
"Sorry you had to see that, they're usually not this... careless," Jae-hyo apologizes, letting out a long-suffering sigh as they continued past, eventually reaching his private office in an adjoining hallway.
"Please, take a seat. Do you want something to drink- Coffee, tea, wine?"
He hasn't elaborated on much of anything and Aerith is sure to be confused, perhaps even a little frightened thanks to Dumb and Dumber getting fucking blood everywhere... All would be explained shortly.
#holyguardian#◈ rp threads#eheh heh she's going to play a very pivotal role in a little bit#I figured Jae is going to offer her a deal in exchange for protection from Corneo's goons#it'll be fun I promise
You're stuck in a timeloop, but one thing changes with each revolution of the loop, except for one or two constants. The changes are minute, gradual, and you don't really realize a shift is happening.
When you do start to feel something is off, you take comfort that one or two things have not changed and If those things haven't changed, then nothing has, you tell yourself whenever you get that strange feeling.
One loop, you're going up a set of stairs to hold the door open for the distracted and overburdened adjunct professor in order in order to prevent the catastrophic six-car pileup just a block over, when you trip at the twenty-fifth step (or twenty-four?) and miss your opening.
No, you tell yourself. There are twenty-five concrete steps, there is always twenty-five steps.
You're pulled from your existential step counting when the sound of squealing and gnashing metal cracks the air open and see the flame spurt from the 18-wheeler truck's blown gas tank.
You recalibrate. It won't happen again. Of course there are missteps (ha), but there's always a new loop just a revolution away.
There are twenty-four steps to the city library and you eventually wonder why you never ran up two-steps at a time so you can help the professor through the door and even take some of their burden from them as you walk them to their car a little ways away.
You don't always get cotton candy at the farmer's market from the gruff, but kind cotton candy vendor until you always get a Polish hotdog with spicy mustard from them and chat awhile longer. There was no first-time cotton candy to hotdog exchange, why would there have been? You still don't know why you get a sugar craving whenever you pass the broccoli farmer's stall.
You're in a timeloop, the same as always timeloop and there's nothing wrong, except for being stuck in a timeloop, and nothing changes. The sun has always set at 7:07, you think you remember because it's lol upside down. Isn't that funny?
FCSU #90 Autumn in the City
Autumn’s first few weeks in the city were slightly overwhelming. She started her gallery job and worked to create new, inspired paintings that would wow her bosses and dazzle the collectors. it wasn’t hard to find beauty in the vibrant, beating heart of San Myshuno. The view from Penny’s balcony was enchanting, calling to mind a sea of concrete and glass. Nichole and Andrew’s home offered the bright hues and eclectic style of the Spice Market. She used her first paycheque to update her wardrobe, she needed a more polished, sophisticated look to really be taken seriously here, or at least that’s what her boss told her.
The gang often wound the nights down with karaoke at the local bar. Penny and Autumn were a formidable duo. Autumn was curious about drinking culture and looking to experiment but her aunt always made sure to keep her safe. Penny was a great chaperone, striking the perfect balance between letting her young niece have fun but also knowing when to cut her off and take her home.
One unexpected thing about the city was the attention Autumn was attracting. Every night at the bar men would flock to her, offering to buy her drinks. Some were much older, sporting business suits and salt and pepper hair. Penny was fast to swoop in when that type came around. Having spent some of her teen years in the FCSU Autumn had no intention of dating, sure, some men or boys were cute but Autumn could just not shake off her Priesthood teachings. She had once liked a boy in high but Abby scared him away with her fire, brimstone and prairie dresses.
“How did you start dating?” She asked Penny one day. “How did you move passed your purity lessons?” “Do not do what I did.” Said Penny before recounting the tale of her wayward youth. “When someone seems interesting, meet up in public, get to know them and go from there. If something feels wrong, it probably is.” This advice just confused her further but she nodded along, pretending to understand.
Autumn carried these confused feelings to the gallery with her every day. Her boss, Mr. Frost, would praise her talent and bring her to parties to teach her how to “network” but his ulterior motives soon came to the forefront. One night after a gallery show they were having animated discussion about impressionist techniques and as their conversation rose to a fever pitch he pulled her in and kissed her. “Whoa!” She exclaimed. “What was that?” “Artists are passionate people.” He said, straightening his suit.
Autumn couldn’t explain why but she liked the attention she got from Mr. Frost. He was helping her further her career. He had it all figured out and was letting her into his secret world of artists and patrons. She felt special for the first time in her life. At his urging, she decided to keep this part of her life a secret from her aunt and uncle. Weeks wore on, summer became fall became winter. Autumn celebrated the holidays with Greyson and Penny.
Penny gave Autumn some of her guitars for Winterfest and taught her to play. Penny rarely had time for music these days. Autumn had never felt so cool.
Autumn’s relationship was progressing too though she kept it a secret. At the holiday staff party at work the crowd had dwindled until it was just Autumn and her boss. They’d been enjoying wine at the bar all night but Autumn was still in sound mind when Mr. Frost approached her and once again began kissing her. the two stumbled before half falling/half sneaking into the lobby’s photobooth.
Things carried on into the new year. Autumn was chipper, inspired and enamored with her new life. At work she felt like her secret relationship was a sly joke between herself and her boss. She went out of her way to tease him in public, knowing he couldn’t react. She thought she was being sneaky until another coworker pulled her aside one day. “You really think you’re special, don’t you?” He sneered. “You think you’re the first girl he’s pulled this on? No, sweetie. He’s a creep, everyone knows that. You don’t want to be his little pet. You’ll be in for a world of pain once he decides he’s done with you. Plus, he’s married.” He turned away. Autumn couldn’t help but notice the rest of her coworkers pulling away. They started calling her “Daddy Issues” behind her back.
Autumn finally came clean to her aunt when Penny found her crying after work one day. “Oh my god, dude.” She said hugging her niece. “You have to end it. Don’t wait for him to do it.” Autumn nodded through her tears. Once she’d calmed down somewhat Penny giggled “Damn it, your mom got you out of the church so you wouldn’t have sleep with old men.” Autumn was so shocked she broke out in laughter. The two laughed until Autumn started crying again. “Don’t tell mom.” She mumbled into Penny’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, I wont.”
Autumn waited until she and Mr. Frost were alone after work to broach the subject. “I heard you have a wife.” She said. “That’s true but she understands the nature of this industry.” He said shortly. “I can’t be with a married man. I’m sorry but this has to end.” He hung his head. “If that’s how you feel.” He left the room. Penny had told Autumn not to show emotion while breaking up. “Act like he meant nothing to you, that gives you some of your power back.” She’d advised. “You can cry later when you come home, but please hold it together when you talk to him.”
@chounaifu sent: 8. the lot behind a somber hotel. / creepy meetings (accepting, please!!)
Half-shrouded by the foggy outskirts of Olivine, ERIS EVANS arrives at the agreed-upon meeting point, seemingly alone. She's dressed quite simply today, somewhat attempting to blend in with the rest of Johto's bustling seaport crowd. Far removed from anyone's sight, the Devon traveler taps her flats against the damp concrete and shivers. Damn this sea breeze! The salty air makes Eris's eyes sting, even behind the protection of meticulously polished lenses. It's suffocating her...
The former commander sighs. At least she's not representing Devon today. No, her quick trip to Johto is solely for personal endeavors.
In order to further pursue her private research on the effects of Pokemon venom, Eris had long abandoned the traditional law, bound up with its red tape, disclaimers, and liability forms. Instead, she drew upon some shadier connections to gain access to Kanjoh's intricate and well-run black market network, where she could acquire toxic Qwilfish spines, Ariados silk, Slowpoke tails, and other...ethically questionable goods with ease. (As for the last item, Anje the ravenous Seviper has to eat.)
There's a sudden sound of someone new entering into the abandoned seaside lot, and Eris perks up, an innocent smile sliding over her features as she sights an emerging figure with teal hair. The seller. The savvy researcher pulls on a pair of latex gloves and reaches into her coat pocket, extracting a pristine cash envelope from its depths. With an inviting nod, she holds it out between two fingers like explosive material.
"Half paid for in the envelope here, and the other half once I take inventory, yes?" Eris offers lightly, as if she's just doing some casual window shopping. She nods respectfully towards the mystery merchant. "I know I had quite the large order this time, so they told me to expect you for today's exchange. The market's boss..." (She breathes the last line with an added, half-feigned reverence.)
"Thank you for coming all the way out here to meet me...Proton. Shall we get started?"
#chounaifu#(ask to tag!!)#(i could NOT get this scene out of my head and got carried away LMAO)#(feel free to continue this if youd like!! no obligation!!)#(it was a BLAST to write regardless!)#(v. eris evans)
"Why Paver Installations are the Secret to Boosting Your Home's Exterior Appeal."
When you think of a beautiful home, what’s one of the first things that come to mind? Chances are, it's the exterior. The look of your home’s entryway, driveway, or backyard patio plays a massive role in its overall aesthetic. If your outdoor areas are looking drab, upgrading with paver installations could be the key to transforming your home and boosting its curb appeal.
Pavers are a popular choice for homeowners who want more than just a functional outdoor space. They bring both style and durability to a wide range of landscaping projects. From creating stunning driveways and walkways to designing luxurious patios and pool decks, pavers offer versatility that is hard to beat. In this article, we’ll explore the top benefits of paver installations and how they can take your home’s exterior from average to extraordinary.
For an in-depth look at how pavers can enhance your home’s curb appeal, be sure to read a detailed article : Paving the Way: 10 Benefits of Paver Installations That Will Enhance Your Home’s Curb Appeal.
1. Achieve a Polished Look Without Breaking the Bank
When it comes to home improvement projects, curb appeal matters. It’s not just about impressing guests; a well-designed outdoor space can make your home stand out and even increase its market value. Installing pavers is a cost-effective way to give your property an upscale look without the hefty price tag of more expensive options like natural stone or intricate masonry work.
Unlike traditional concrete, which can look bland or crack over time, pavers come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors that allow you to create a design that’s unique to your home. Whether you're aiming for a rustic cobblestone look, a sleek modern appearance, or something in between, pavers offer the flexibility to suit your style preferences.
2. Exceptional Durability for Long-Lasting Results
One of the standout features of paver installations is their durability. Pavers are designed to last for decades, with little wear and tear, even in the harshest of weather conditions. Unlike poured concrete, which can crack under pressure or during freezing and thawing cycles, pavers interlock in a way that allows for movement. This makes them highly resistant to damage from shifts in the ground or severe weather.
For homeowners, this means fewer repairs and replacements, and an outdoor space that looks pristine year after year. Whether you're installing a driveway, walkway, or patio, pavers are made to handle heavy foot traffic, vehicle loads, and the stresses of outdoor living.
3. Maintenance-Free Beauty
One of the main attractions of paver installations is their low-maintenance nature. Unlike other surfaces that require frequent sealing, staining, or patching, pavers retain their beauty with minimal upkeep. For the most part, all they need is an occasional cleaning. Simple sweeping or power washing is usually sufficient to keep dirt and debris from accumulating.
Furthermore, pavers are incredibly easy to repair. If a paver becomes damaged due to heavy impacts, stains, or general wear, it can be replaced without disturbing the surrounding surface. This is a major advantage over asphalt or concrete, which require costly and labor-intensive repairs when damage occurs.
4. Customization for Your Unique Style
Every home is unique, and your outdoor space should reflect that individuality. Pavers come in a wide variety of colors, textures, and shapes, offering you endless possibilities for customization. Whether you prefer the natural beauty of stone or the sleek elegance of modern concrete, you can create a design that enhances the character of your home.
Unlike a one-size-fits-all material like concrete, pavers can be arranged in patterns that suit your taste. From classic herringbone and basket-weave designs to circular patterns and intricate mosaics, the design options are virtually limitless. Pavers also allow you to mix materials to create a dynamic, layered look that adds depth to your exterior.
5. Eco-Friendly and Sustainable
In today's world, environmental responsibility is more important than ever. If you're looking for an eco-friendly way to upgrade your outdoor spaces, pavers are a great option. Many pavers are made from natural materials such as clay, stone, or recycled concrete, all of which are durable and sustainable.
Additionally, permeable pavers—designed with spaces between each piece allow rainwater to naturally filter into the ground, reducing water runoff and helping with drainage. This feature is especially beneficial for regions that experience heavy rain or frequent flooding, as it prevents water from pooling and damaging your landscape.
By installing permeable pavers, you can have a stylish outdoor space that is also environmentally conscious.
6. A Strong Return on Investment
Paver installations are more than just an aesthetic upgrade; they’re also a smart financial investment. If you're planning to sell your home in the near future, a well-designed driveway, patio, or walkway can significantly increase the market value of your property.
Homes with thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces often have an edge over similar properties that lack curb appeal. Whether it’s a charming front walkway or a spacious backyard patio, buyers are increasingly drawn to homes that offer both beauty and functionality in their outdoor areas. With the proper paver installation, your home could see a substantial return on investment.
7. Safety Comes First with Pavers
When selecting materials for outdoor surfaces, safety should always be a priority. Pavers are designed with slip-resistant surfaces, which makes them an excellent option for areas that will be exposed to moisture, such as pool decks or walkways. The texture of pavers offers better traction than other materials, reducing the likelihood of slips and falls, particularly when it’s wet.
Additionally, pavers are great for creating clear boundaries for walkways and driveways, reducing the risk of accidents. Whether you’re creating an elegant path through your garden or installing a driveway, pavers can help keep your outdoor space both safe and stylish.
8. Cost-Effective and Easy to Maintain
Although pavers may cost a bit more upfront than other materials like gravel or asphalt, their long-term cost-effectiveness makes them a solid choice for homeowners. Pavers require little maintenance beyond cleaning, and they are built to last for decades. The money you save on repairs and replacements can easily outweigh the initial investment.
Furthermore, pavers add value to your home, making them an excellent choice if you plan to sell in the future. Homes with high-quality landscaping, including paver installations, often sell faster and at a higher price.
9. Versatility for Any Outdoor Space
One of the biggest advantages of pavers is their versatility. Pavers can be used in a wide range of outdoor applications, including:
Driveways: Pavers can support the weight of vehicles without cracking or shifting. They provide a durable, aesthetically pleasing surface that enhances your home’s entryway.
Walkways: Whether leading to your front door, through your garden, or around your yard, pavers create a stylish and functional path.
Patios: Pavers are perfect for creating inviting outdoor spaces where you can relax, entertain, or enjoy a meal outdoors. Their customizable nature allows you to design a patio that fits your needs.
Pool Decks: Pavers are ideal around pools, as they offer a non-slip surface and remain cool to the touch, even on hot summer days.
With so many applications, you can create a cohesive look throughout your property by using pavers in different areas.
10. Transform Your Home with Pavers
Pavers offer an easy, affordable way to transform your home’s exterior. With a vast array of materials, colors, and patterns, pavers allow you to design a space that’s uniquely yours while adding lasting value to your home. Whether you're looking to revamp your driveway, enhance your backyard, or create an elegant walkway, pavers provide a timeless solution that combines beauty, durability, and functionality.
in video games, movement is one of those things that's really very subtle, but also monumentally important to the game as a whole.
in general, the more the player can move, the more fun they'll have, and this is pretty well documented; compare the evolution of the soulslike, where early titles such as demon's souls and dark souls forced you to stand in place while you chugged estus, to recent titles like bloodborne and elden ring where you're generally able to move around a lot more. the distinction isn't necessarily a good-bad thing - some people may prefer the older style of slow, tactical decision-making for every action over the newer fast-paced action style, and that's okay, but the later games have been extremely successful with the faster, more mobility-focused style.
let's look at a second, more concrete example: monster hunter. through the first four main titles, monster hunter was largely contained to japan; it got released abroad, but months later, and it was mostly only popular to japanese players. with that said, it was quite popular in japan, with monster hunter 4 having sales within two days of release leagues ahead of any other game on the market, save for pokemon X and Y. but then, monster hunter world happened, and everything changed. largely, everything was the same; world's mechanics were pretty much standard monster hunter, but there are tweaks and polish across the board that make it feel like something fresh and new and, apparently, more palatable to audiences outside of japan. the first thing of particular note is that using items became much, much quicker, and didn't lock you into the animation until completion to get the full benefits. in the old monster hunter titles, eating a potion would consist of you sheathing your weapon, doing an eating animation with a cartoon glorp sound effect, and then doing a strongman pose. in monster hunter world, however, this was changed: you still need to sheathe your weapon, but now you pull out a flask and start drinking - importantly, you can walk around while drinking the potion, with the only detriment being that you're slightly slower than normal sheathed walking, and, even more critically, you don't even need to complete the animation! simply starting to drink heals about a third of the full value instantly, and the remainder fills up over the next few seconds as you drink. in one simple change, they changed potion drinking from "when do i have an opening to eat a potion" to "do i have a chance to drink this potion to top myself off"
the second major change in world was less a single change and more a broad rework of how weapons work. in classic monster hunter, weapons are extremely rigid - if you start attacking, you're basically locked in the direction you started unless you have a move that lets you slightly shift. every single attack has to be committed to - you need to know what the monster is doing, you need to react to that, and then you need to counter during the opening. you have no room for sneaking in other things, so you need to be very, very careful with your positioning. at the same time, however, the monsters tend to be just as rigid and "turn based" in their actions as the hunters are. in world, however, that was all changed - almost all weapons' combos are significantly more fluid, and there are far more options for repositioning and gap closing, meaning you have far more uptime on your actions, greater options for combo interweaving, and many new moves to fill all sorts of roles. the monsters, in turn, were changed to be more active, spending less time floundering and repositioning and far more time actively attacking. as a result, world is far more action focused, where the hunter's goal is generally to be in the place the monster isn't attacking before the attack comes, and reacting to very short tells, then striking from the blind spot. as a result of this faster-paced, action focused style, monster hunter suddenly exploded outside of japan, quickly skyrocketing it into a position of power in the world of gaming.
by the same token, however, just because a game is faster doesn't mean it's better. take, for instance, many indie horror games. it's something of a staple for the player character to walk at a slow to medium pace, slower than whatever monsters will chase you, while having access to a sprint button which makes you slightly faster, just enough to run faster than the monsters, but which also sometimes a (sometimes invisible) stamina meter. in this case, limiting your movement speed builds tension, causing panic as you run low on stamina searching for an escape or hiding place - it accentuates the genre, while also offering enough freedom that the game usually doesn't end up feeling too slow.
you might ask, then, what about other genres? should they be fast or slow? so here's a quick guideline for a bunch of genres:
racing games: fast
strategy games: slow
platformer: fast
fighting: fast
puzzle: slow
shooter: fast
stealth: slow
sports: fast
there are, of course, exceptions
