Jules is dreading their new class. Some new age bullshit class elective that nobody picked. Ever.
Not unless they wanted to be a social pariah.
Just their luck that all the other available options were filled or unavailable with their schedule.
The urge to scream bubbles up in their throat.
Instead they swallow it down, put on their war paint (eyeliner sharp enough to castrate lesser men), and make their way across campus.
The building is a small shack that looks more like a dying barn than an actual building for human habitation. What should have been the roof is more of a horrid agglomeration of sheet metal, tarp, and bungie chords.
The open door sways gently in the early afternoon breeze.
A chill like icy fingers trail down their spine.
Jules does not jump or squeak. No of course not, besides there's no one around to say otherwise. It's ridiculous to feel a chill on such a warm afternoon.
Clearly, this is just their reasonable fear of what should be a condemned building.
"Are you coming in or would you rather stand there like a zombie?" A voice calls out from the open doorway.
Jules startles so bad they feel their soul ascend to a higher plane for the briefest of heart beats.
A lanky bean pole of a man steps out of the darkness of the interior to lean on the doorway, a large thermos in their hand. He palms an eye, yawning obscenely. The dark bags under his eyes nearly as dark as his hair.
"Well?"
"Uh..."
The man rolls his eyes and disappears back into the building.
They swallow and follow at a more sedate pace.
The door opens up to a wrapping hallway to the left. It's surprisingly cool in the dimly lit hall, the walls littered in posters and taped up tabloids.
Jules hikes their bag higher on their shoulder and starts walking.
And walking.
And walking.
The building cannot be this big but the hallway keeps going.
Finally, they arrive at a set of doors on the interior wall that open up into a sharply steeped atrium. The ceiling is high and airy with afternoon sun streaming through the skylights. Seating wraps around 3/4 of the space. A semi raised dais sits on the bottom of the atrium with a podium, a table covered in...stuff, and the man writing on a dark green blackboard on wheels.
"Take a seat, Mx Jules," the man says, "Preferably in the front so I don't have to shout."
"How do you know my name?" Jules says.
"Because I get a list of students in my class, have a seat."
Jules blinks. "You're Professor Fenton?"
"Call me Danny, I hate formality," he says waving his hand and moving to the podium.
Jules makes their way closer, "Am I your only student?"
"For now, you may quit yet."
Jules frowns, pausing on the next step. Squaring their shoulders, they stomp the rest of the way down to settle loudly into the front most seat.
'Danny' looks up, arching an eyebrow at them.
"Why does the school even let you teach if you don't have any students?" They ask.
"Because they can't afford to fire me," he smiles, something sharp in his expression. He moves back to the table and shoves a chunk of stuff onto the floor to sit on it. "Now then, since this is the first class of the semester, currently you are my one and only student, which could change either way," he shrugs, "Let's get the basics out of the way, why this class?"
"What sort of question is that?"
"Open ended? I hear I have quite the reputation... hence the overflowing wait list to get in.”
Jules rolls their eyes, “All my preferred electives were filled, yours was the only one open that gave me enough credits to graduate on time. What’s up with this building?”
“What do you mean?”
Jules waves their hand at the expansive ceiling with an accompanying WTF face.
“Well, how much do you know about ectoplasm?”
They blink. “You mean that knock off slime?”
Danny grins.
It’s less of a smile and more that he bares his teeth.
His very pointy, sharp teeth.
“What did you say your major was again?” he asks.
“I didn’t.”
“Right, right,” he knocks a large metal contraption over to pick up a sheet from beneath it. Jules, watches, with morbid fascination as the thing tips into what must have been a bowl of marbles that shatter and get sent tumbling across the desk. In the ensuing domino affect of chaos, several other things get knocked over, several piles of paper fall to the floor, and an even stranger contraption erupts into bright green and purple flames.
“Uh...”
“Mx Jules Brooks, here on scholarship,” Danny reads off the paper, ignoring the chaos beside himself, “Majoring in-”
“Your desk is on fire!” Jules shouts, getting to their feet.
“Hm?” Danny looks up and then turns. “Ah, so it is.”
“Wha- aren’t you going to do something?!”
“Nah, it’ll right itself on its own,” he gets to his feet, tapping his heel against the leg of the desk.
Everything seems to pause, and then slowly rewind. The marbles bouncing back up into their bowl, the papers righting themselves on the desk, the fire going out, and all the metal contraptions returning to their place.
“Now then, I see, you need my class to fill the cross culture requirement,” he continues looking over the sheet again. “Which is to say, if you truly don’t wish to stay, I can give you a passing mark and let you take this as a free period of sorts-”
“Teach me.” Jules slaps the desktop.
“Excuse me?”
“You can’t just pull that magic trick and expect me to not want to learn!"
"Most go running and screaming," he says, amused.
"Yeah, well, I'm not most people, you're like the epitome of finding a magic wizard in a tower, except you don't have the beard and you live in a shack."
"Hey now, that's rude, beards look horrendous on me."
"You didn't deny living in a shack."
He shrugs, "You can't reasonably prove I live here."
"So you'll teach me?"
He squints at them before downing the entirety of his thermos. Sinking into the chair by the podium, he glares at the thermos. "Sure why not."
Jules beams.
"Get outta here, class officially starts on Thursday, I need a nap."
"You're the worst teacher," they say, getting to their feet.
"Yeah, yeah, now shoo, I'll see you Thursday Mx Jules."
They open their mouth to say something when they find themselves standing on the path leading back to campus.
Jules blinks and turns around, the shack stands about 50 feet behind them. A chill runs down their spine.
"Trippy."
