This session, the party followed up with their plan to fake a typo. After posting a blurry picture of Cole's muddy Dratini online, they lie in wait, until a group of motorcyclists appear with a GM logo on their bikes. They grill the party about the location of the Dratini, which Cole reveals belongs to him, and is in fact still a Dragon type. The bikers tell the party not to spread misinformation, and leave.
Tumblr media
Next morning, they find out Galactic HQ was broken into, so they go to Police to find the Bush Ninja (Chapter 8). He slips them a note to go find someone at Galactic HQ. They meet Jane Wattle, who helps the group get into the higher floors of Galactic HQ, and they find this "Roxanne". Darryl lies that the GM bikers from last night gave him the name, to ask about weird Pokémon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She grumpily brings us to the building's basement, and yells at said bikers, before explaining to us that GM is Green Machine (not Galactic Malactic), a group within Galactic Corp, who are trying to fix the issues they have with Galactic since they merged with Tech Industries. The Bush Ninja is a guy named Dave they're working with, and he found the lab responsible for the Typos is in fact not with the HQ building, before getting arrested.
Roxanne tells us to look at Tech Industries or Mandura University for the actual lab. We start with Mandura Uni, and after namedropping Roxanne, are brought down to a creepy basement. The group are locked in with a pair of Galactic Corp grunts, who try to battle the party into submission.
Tumblr media
Their Raichu almost KOs Kendra, but Morris jumps in the way. The group decide to focus fire this Raichu before it can launch another powerful attack, and the grunts are subsequently knocked out.
Now they are stuck in a creepy basement and have to find a way out.

Typos
Pokémon with the Wrong Type
One of my friends GMs a Pokémon Tabletop United Campaign, and for the first major plot arc, there was this phenomena where mad scientists were experimenting on Pokémon. These experiments affected the Pokémon on the molecular scale, where their Types would change. Not in a way that transformed their body in a major way, but they changed colour and texture to better suit their type.
As our TTRPG group's resident artist, I took it upon myself to make designs for these "Typo" Pokémon, as we came to call them. Below are the ones we encountered in the campaign.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dratini-Ground wasn't a real Typo, but in an effort to bait the bad guys into coming out of hiding, we faked a Typo by covering a Dratini in mud.
Tumblr media
Below are Typos that I designed outside of the campaign since i was having fun with the idea, but they didn't appear in the campaign.

ok since i’m so hyped here are my predictions for mikus pokemon and designs (and vocaloP) for project voltage: (disclaimer, the vocaloP choices are probably super unrealistic im not super knowledgeable on vocaloP and i don’t know who they could reasonably get this is just my very limited and biased view)
👁️‍🗨️psychic: meloetta (already confirmed)
🌊water: primarina (already confirmed)
🔥fire: skeledirge (already confirmed)
🌱grass: rillaboom (already confirmed)
⚪️normal: ok i’m gonna be pissed if either normal or fairy isn’t jigglypuff. fits the music/singing theme perfectly AND is pokemon #39 which is the miku number. if they’re cowards or put jigglypuff in the fairy slot, then i could see exploud or chatot for the music theme or maybe even lopunny for the twintails? oh or obv farfetchd cuz it was in the kei art. probably farfetchd.
this design might be closest to regular miku. or they take it in a lass/schoolgirl direction?
Oster project would be cute for this one i think! or 40mp
❄️ice: Alolan Vulpix, cuz there was already a pokemon x miku crossover with alolan vulpix. maybe lapras or frosslass or amaura tho if they don’t go with that.
gotta be tons of pale blue, maybe some pink thrown in. i wonder if they’re gonna go with the cute route or the elegant route. ooh maybe she’ll be snow miku-y
or oster project for this one lmaoo
👻ghost: i can’t wait to see this one. it’s kinda hard to pick tho? i could see oricorio, but that might be used for the flying spot. gengar is basically the ghost type pokemon so i could see that as well, but i think it’s gonna be rotom. i’ve seen fanmade rotom mikus before and they’re perfect. i hope it’s that
this miku is gonna be so spookyyyy. i’m thinkin a lil mischievous and sharp teeth and stuff. wispy twintails. ik she’s an electric gym leader but iono vibes
dudeeee if they got mafumafu for this one it’d go so harddddd. they got him to do the anime op a few years ago i really hope he’s part of this collab. syudo would go hard for ghost too
🐛bug: frosmoth? illumise? maybe kriketune for the music theme… idk this one’s tough. final answer frosmoth.
hmm this one’s hard. i hope they make her a lil nerdy. give her round glasses or smth
oohhh i could see pinocchio p for the bug type one. i really hope he’s part of this he’s my favorite vocaloP
😈dark: i’m feelin obstagoon on this one bc of the music theme. maybe absol or morpeko tho.
yess this miku is gonna be so intense. heavy makeup and spikey collars and shit hell yeah. piers from swsh vibes for sure
syudo!!!!!
⚡️electric: very well could be pikachu. it’s just a shoo in at this point. if not, then toxtricity bc of the music theme, or a pikaclone like pachirisu maybe.
probably leaning into the android/digital theme. definitely super energetic. iono vibes
giga??? giga would be perfect
👊fighting: it’s gotta be sirfetchd right? leek and all. idk if they’d wanna do two pokemon from the same line if they do farfetch’d for normal or flying. or i mean, they could be lame and go for pirouette form meloetta ig… quaquaval? iron valiant miku would go hard tho
…. the only thing that comes to mind for design is seraphim on the ring miku lmaoooo
that makes me want to say mitchie m but i have no clue lmaooo
🧚‍♀️fairy: like i said, jigglypuff. if they put jigglypuff in the normal slot, then i could see gardevoir or togekiss. i would also love tinkaton miku tho. it does kinda have twintails
obv very pink! super adorable. i feel like her eyes are gonna be big and either sparkly or kinda empty like valeries from x and y lol
hmmm maybe toa?
🧲steel: ok hear me out. metang. her twintails could look like it’s arms. realistically, i think they’d more likely go metagross in that case tho even tho it has four arms. maybe klink? it’s got miku color in it. cobalion also has miku color. honedge? magearna miku would go hard too. final answer is metagross tho
maybe kinda robot-y? idk we definitely getting some cool grays and teal tho
nayutalien maybe idk i get the vibes.
🪨rock: amaura or arourus probably. i could also see diancie tho
ok i’m kinda stumped on a design and vocaloP for this one tho. genres definitely gonna be rock tho.
🗻ground: this one’s tough. palpitoad/seismatoad fit the music/sound theme but they’re ugly so i’m doubtful. could go for the fan favorite in wooper/quagsire but idk if they would. idk if wooper has the same impact in japan as he does here. nidoqueen maybe? final answer wooper ig
also kinda stumped.
🪽flying: could be farfetchd. i kinda forgot it was also a flying type. i would love oricorio miku tho. ideally with parts of each form incorporated into her design, but if they just stuck to one form, i’d say pom pom for the vibes or sensu for the color.
oooh we gettin a lil adorable ditzy mikuuuu we got the light blues for sure. skyla from black and white vibes
could see oster project for this one too lmao
☠️poison: ROSERADE MIKU WOULD GO SO HARDDDD. i think it’s unlikely tho :( most likely it’s gonna be toxtricity if he’s not used in the electric slot. if he is, then maybe toxapex or drapion?
i feel like they’re gonna go with a roxie from bw2 vibe for this one and i’m so here for it.
deco*27 i feel
🐉dragon: ok i’m like 75% sure it’s gotta be altaria right? the other 25% is dragonair. i hope it’s altaria tho i love altaria
ok if it’s altaria maybe they’ll do lisia from ora’s vibes i could see that. if not maybe we get dragon trainer miku? clair from johto vibes??? that would go hard ngllll
idk for this one ngl….
anyway i can’t wait to see how wrong i am :D i’m in love with project voltage aaaaa

Pokémon GO bekommt ein großes Sommer-Event.
\
\ '); }

Last time, the group of trainers were taking a bus from Kaeraumu City to Gawlong City. Once they arrive, they split up to explore the city. Morris learns that there's Pokémon racing in the neighbouring Mandura City.
They soon learn from Jane Wattle (the Professor's daughter) that the Typos' conditions are worsening, She suspects that the Galactic Corporation might have something resembling a cure in their HQ in Mandura, which the group was going to anyway, to investigate Tech Industries. Stucko's regiment requests his service to the south, so the group must say goodbye, for now, but hopefully not forever.
Tumblr media
After they train their Pokémon, Kendra suggests they visit Gawlong's Contest Hall. A presenter in the waiting room asks Kendra to join the upcoming Super Contest, and the others would be welcome too. Kendra enters their Popplio, and Darryl also enters with his new Wishiwashi.
Each Pokémon and their trainer got their turn in the spotlight, while the others would try to drag attention away. Kendra's Popplio got its turn early and captured the hearts of the audience and judges. A Joltik tried its best to fight for the spotlight, and a Flabebe continually sabotaged its rivals. Darryl's Wishiwashi could not keep up unfortunately, but Kendra and their Popplio stole the show. They were encouraged to compete again in future contests.
Tumblr media
After the contest, they decide to catch a bus to Mandura City so they could start their investigations there in the morning. They get lodging at a fairly dinghy but affordable hotel and prep for an eventful next day. This big day starts with a car trip to the city centre, and the group of trainers decide to split up in order to cover more ground on the organizations they're concerned with.
Cole and Darryl decide to go to Galactic Corp. posing as a school boy researching a project, and their doting older brother. They managed to tag along with a School Excursion group, and were given a tour of the lower floors. There was some corporate spiel about the betterment of mankind, the PC storage system, and renewable energy, but nothing about the experimental healing pods that the party suspect caused the Typos.
Meanwhile, Morris and Kendra went to Tech Industries, posing as tech heads looking to invest. The two are given their own tour of this building's information floor, learning about a proposed alternate energy solution, involving harnessing the electricity of certain Pokemon, the widespread popularity of Rotom tech being an effective proof of concept. They also learn that Galactic Corp. does some R&D for Tech Industries, but most of their queries go unanswered.
The trainers regroup for lunch and share their findings. It is clear the answer to their questions is in the Galactic Corp. building, but Cole and Darryl were unable to find an easy way into the staff only areas. They begin to concoct a plan to make a decoy distraction; fake the incidence of a Typo, and draw out Galactic Corp. employees to investigate.
Tumblr media
Ideally, with the building even a little emptier, they can find an opportunity to strike. Next session.

After their adventures in espionage last time, the team of Pokémon Trainers start a new day in Kolumbar City. Before moving on, the trainers decide to go Pokemon hunting; Kendra within the City, Darryl and Cole in the ocean nearby (Darryl swimming, Cole riding Darrryl's Gyarados). Darryl catches a Horsea, Kendra catches an Eevee (evolving it into a Glaceon), Cole catches a Shellder (evolving it into a Cloyster).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their next quest was to take place in the nearby Riverwarra Town, so they catch a bus out of town. Riverwarra is a small town, and apparently people have been going missing for several months. They visit "Joe's Milk Bar", and get some milkshakes, including Morris's custom order of a Protein-Flavoured Protein Shake. We find that the disappearances are a mix of tourists and locals, mostly at night.
The group decide to get rooms at "Jeanette's Bed and Breakfast", and will next search the local terrain for where or why these people have disappeared.

After the Galactic Corp. "warp room" transported the group from Mandura City to New Motorstoke City, they decide to heal up and seek help.
Cole's mother, Maxine Steelspike, head of the Ferrothorn Mining company, has her head office in New Motorstoke. The group arrange a meeting with Maxine, and after they explain their recent experience with the Galactic Corporation, she asks to see this Warp Room for herself.
After a short trip to the shed, the group visited and use the warp room. Maxine takes pictures for use as evidence, and tells Cole and his friends not to pursue this matter further. She will sort things out.
Maxine arranges a plane to the group's next destination, and encourages them to meet a big-shot Pokémon trainer who's seeking opponents in the city. They soon run into Nemona, a Paldean tourist who has constructed a team of local Pokémon.
Nemona challenges Cole, Darryl, Morris, and Kendra to a four on one, inviting them to use their entire team, as many of hers are significantly higher levelled.
Tumblr media
Despite her overlevelled team, accuracy and luck rolls are not on Nemona's side. Her Goodra specifically misses a lot of key moves that would have wiped out several of our heroes' Pokemon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The group finish their training for the day, several of them with new pokemon in their party and head for the airport.
Tumblr media
Morris caught a Shiny Ekans; Darryl's Magikarp evolved into a Gyarados
As they land in Kolumbar Airport, they see news headlines about the Galactic Corp. Although the company is being cancelled for the right reasons; Pokémon abuse and tech misuse; Maxine has seemed to use the drama to prop up Ferrothorn Mining instead.

Last time we saw our heroes, they were exploring a secret Galactic Corp lab underneath Mandura University. They find a variety of dangerous looking machines and pods full of goo, when they are interrupted by another round of Galactic Corp. grunts.
When they tell us to come quietly, Darryl, Cole, and Morris decide to launch a pre-emptive strike on the grunts, while Kendra sits cross-legged, attempting to finish their inner peace. A series of back and forths follow, where our heroes try and cover their retreat further into the complex, while the Galactic grunts approach, capturing the still meditating Kendra while they move in.
Morris and Darryl find their way into a comms room overlooking Grunts, where Morris throws office chairs at them. Darryl steps on a warp pad connected to a professor's office and finds a keycard.
Tumblr media
A series of defensive attacks from Cole and Morris eventually knock out two more of the grunts, and the others retreat back up stairs. The group contact Jane Wattle by phone to call police on this place while they recuperate. The keycard opens up one final room in the lab, with a larger warp pad. The heroes decide to see where this one goes before the place is swarming with cops.
They reappear in a round room full of warp pads, each labelled with one of Oster's state's capital cities, including Mandura, where they just came from, and an elevator shaft. Cole theorizes that this room must be in New Motorstoke, the only major city without a dedicated warp pad in this room. They take the elevator up and find themselves in a shed, and after checking their phone's locations, it seems they are indeed in New Motorstoke.

Pokemon Oster - Fakemon and Regional Forms
In case a reader stumbles upon this post accidentally, I am a player in a friend's Pokémon Tabletop United campaign, which is set in Oster, our pokemon world's stand-in for Australia. Given I am our group's resident artist, the GM has asked for my help in designing regional variants of existing pokemon in order to make them more Australian. Pictured below is what we've come up with so far.
Tumblr media
Osterian Cubone and Marowak take the Bonemerang idea to it's extreme. They have bones sharpened and carved into a true Boomerang shape, and resemble more crocodiles or lizards than their Kanto counterparts. Complete with bone akubras and fly swatters made of their hunts. They are Dark types because they are devious rangers that hunt for sport.
Tumblr media
Osterian Yamper and Boltund take the domesticated dog Pokémon and make it Dingo. The Dingo is a domesticated canine that were introduced to Australia by our Aboriginal predecessors. The redesign mostly meant recolouring Boltund and Yamper and redesigning parts of the body e.g. ears and tails, to look more like a Dingo. Rather than a solid colour, I chose to stylise these Pokemon's coats to resembles Aboriginal Australian dot painting. Their desert habitat is what gives them a Ground type, and since they are more wise guardians than their counterparts, Cubone and Marowak, they have a Fairy typing.
Tumblr media
Osterian Chatot is made to resemble a Cockatiel, a small Australian parrot. Cockatiel's are part of the Cockatoo family, mostly larger parrots with elaborate head crests and more muted colours. It's regional evolution, Didgeritoo, is based on the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo. Some local stories say that a Black Cockatoo flying overhead can foretell coming rain. So Didgeritoo, named for a traditional Australian woodwind instrument, is interpreted as a Pokemon associated with bad omens, particularly coming weather. Didgeritoo cannot learn any water type attacks, but it's arrival can make it rain.
Tumblr media
Osterian Psyduck is reinterpretation of a typical Psyduck's not so duck shape, as a Platypus. Platypus are not birds, but have duck shaped bills, and males can produce a venom in their hindclaws, hence why Oster Psyduck is Water/Poison. It's Evolution Molduck takes the Platypus idea but leaning more into an Australian mythical creature called the Bunyip. There's many interpretations of what this cryptid could be, but a common theme is swamp monster. Molduck is named for both the toxic mould covering its body, and because Platypus are sometimes referred to as duck moles.
Tumblr media
Oster Tarountula is based on one of Australia's many native spiders, the trapdoor spider. Trapdoor spiders wait in ambush in holes plugged by rocks or wood that they lift like a trap door to attack passing prey. Spidops takes the trapdoor idea and uses its ambush rock as a helmet to more resemble a famous old Australian outlaw, Ned Kelly, who wore a metal helmet with a slit for his eyes. This Spidops is not a true outlaw itself, but the helmet it wears is possessed by spirits who were lawless in their past life, hence the Ghost type.

More Fakémon - Sockaroo
One of the first Pokémon the DM for our campaign proposed was a Kangaroo that took more of a male Kangaroo's traits, like boxing. It was decided in the middle of the design process that it would be related to Kangaskhan, being the male equivalent. This meant we needed a prevolution, and this was a bit easier to design, basing it more on Kangaskhan's Joey in its Mega form.
Tumblr media
Sockaroo's name comes from Sock as in to punch, while also being a pun on Ocker (an Australian term meaning a redneck), and Socceroo (Australia's national soccer team). While the physical design was always meant to be more mammalian than the more reptilian Kangaskhan (with a darker nose and fluffier ears), we wanted to it still resemble its female counterpart. The cheek ruffs and belt were based on Mega Kangaskhan's joey, but also giving it fur ruffs on the arms and legs. The pads on its knuckles resemble boxing gloves, helping this Pokémon's punching abilities. The boxing belt now helps reinforce this image. And of course we kept Kangaskhan's helmet, but he's red to resemble a male Red Kangaroo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Skippler is a pun on Skippy (a kangaroo TV character), and ankle-biter (a term for annoying children). I decided to make it look at least a little less threatening than the Mega form, but more threatening than the Joey in Kangaskhan's pouch. I decided to plant some small differences between genders to indicate parts of their evolutions. The male still has the belt, and the start of its boxing cuffs. The female has the beginning of a pouch, as well as one tail spike and bigger shoulder fluffs, to later become Kangaskhan's shoulder pads.

Year of D&D 2023
Tumblr media
This year, it was difficult for free time to line up for me and my friends. In last years "Year of D&D" post, i started by complaining about how infrequent our play was that year, but this year, we played even less. Mostly because of scheduling issues, but also because its difficult to plan as a DM. The scheduling issue has become more difficult partially because all of our current campaigns have more regular player characters. In 2020, we played with 1 DM and 4 players, but now most of our campaigns have at least 5 characters, one had 6, but one dropped out, and I DM'd a campaign that briefly had 8 player characters. Finding free time that lines up for 8 people is very very difficult. But as I'll discuss later on, we might've come up with a solution to this.
Tumblr media
Here's the stats for this year:
In 2023, our group played 4 different adventures, a combined 12 sessions.
I made 13 session arts (1 extra one being the Meet the Party art for Princes). This was compared to 22 sessions and 21 session arts the previous year.
I was a player character in 2 campaigns, and the DM in one campaign and one Oneshot.
Pokémon Oster was the only returning campaign from last year, with sessons 1-5 happening in 2022, and sessions 6-9 this year.
Princes of the Apocalypse is our new core D&D module campaign, continuing from our DM of Tomb of Annihilation and Ravnica. We played 3 sessions this year.
Call of the Netherdeep was my first try at a module campaign, taking place in the world of Critical Role. We have 5 core players that will play every time, plus 3 "guest" players that play as the rival party, and I only intend to join us when they're needed or free.
Frozen Memories was our Halloween One-Shot for the year, and like Call of the Netherdeep, was pre-written. In my opinion, following someone else's work made it flow better than last year's Halloween One-Shot.
Tumblr media
Darryl Fisher returns from last year as my player character in Pokemon Oster, our Pokemon Tabletop United campaign. Since last year, there's been no siginificant change in his playstyle. He fights alongside his Pokemon when facing some Wild Pokemon and ruffians, but respects league rules against regular trainers. Darryl is a mono Water type trainer, and his team consists of Piplup, Buizel, Carvanha, Magikarp, Wooper, and Tympole. He embodies everything a water type trainer would be, he is a swimmer, a fisherman, and even a diver, interested in buried treasure. I play him as a blokey bloke, and a bit of a bogan, but he has a good heart, and steps up to the plate when needed.
The Pokémon Oster campaign has no sign of stopping, so we will see more of Darryl next year.
Tumblr media
Lilith Maddox is my player character in Princes of the Apocalypse. Lilith is my second attempt at a morally grey character (after Nevaeh), but one who i hope to play on a redemption arc on. Lilith is an Eloquence Bard, meaning I can expect most social interactions to go my way, and although i havent had much of a chance to play her, I want to use that as part of her personality and arc. Her father was an incubus, and this means that Lilith's aura naturally puts people at ease, and more likely to agree with her. Because Lilith usually gets her way, this means she has developed a bratty complex, with the secret fear that actually maybe nobody likes her for real. I want to play her to help get over my own imposter syndrome.
Lilith has also been the artistic bane of my existence this year. Perfecting the look of a character that is both snooty and reserved, with an outfit that speaks Bard and Succubus, but not in an inappropriate way, has been almost impossible for me. What I've presented here is what I hope is my final take on Lilith, but who knows when I'll next come upon a design idea I want to incorporate into my most incomplete D&D character.

This year I also took to DMing more. In previous years, I was DMing a campaign I wrote myself called Rise of the Lich Queen, and it wasn't fantastic. So this year, I've put the Lich Queen on hiatus to make an attempt at a following a prewritten campaign, Call of the Netherdeep. The campaign pre-bakes a rival party into the story, and instead of just using the pre-written rivals, i thought it would be interesting for real people to play them. Since the rivals aren't there every session, their players wouldn't need to be every session either. The necessity of having all character present at the start of the campaign did make scheduling difficult, and we only organised 4 sessions. It is on me to schedule as the DM for this campaign, so hopefully, we will find the time for more of this campaign this year.

Our first year of D&D featured a Halloween Oneshot, and we missed out on that 2021. So i've strived to take the reins and make it a yearly tradition again. Last year I wrote my own OneShot, and it had an interesting gimmick, but was poorly written. This year, like my core campaign, I followed a prewritten adventure, Frozen Memories. Having lore and set pieces already written for me allowed me to flesh out specific moments and better write character moments.
What I think was the better take away from this OneShot however was what DIDNT happen. I ran a couple session zeros to help with character creation and to set the stage for the setting, and at one point, all 8 of my closest friends had drafted up a character idea. But when the year started to run out, I decided I needed a cut off, and one weekend, just ran the adventure for who was available. I think I want to use this format going forward; running shorter adventures and changing out the players depending on who is free. I don't know if it will always be OneShots, but I think flexibility for scheduling will make sessions more frequent.
So if I only played as two characters this year, how was I going to fill in the space on my Year of D&D poster for this year? Well this year I played a videogame called Baldur's Gate 3. And BG3 is basically D&D 5e as a videogame. Since first playing the game, I have beaten the game with 3 different characters, and I based each of them on past and present D&D characters. I have a couple more characters in mind that I will play into next year, but there's not a lot to the game that I haven't experienced in my first three playthroughs.

I did write ups for all these characters in a previous post so if you wanna read up on those, Here is the one for Hawthorne and Lilith, and Here is the one for Nevaeh. I really enjoyed Baldur's Gate 3 and it is 100% my game of the year. It scratched an itch brought upon by a lack of D&D, and I appreciate it for that.
As I mentioned above, I'm hoping for TTRPGs next year I can better take advantage of one-off and short adventures that do not require the entire table to be present. Hoping the pattern of less tabletops each subsequent years does not continue. Here's wishing for more D&D with friends next year. If you want to see specifics on individual sessions, I have a very complex system of links on my Pinned Post.
