The last post of the day is here!
The 4th shiny of my french save to be found and caught is skitty.
I was HA hunting its horde via the same method as the English main, I was just SR'ing the radar for a HA grass patch and got a shiny grass patch instead!
Since it's in french, I will translate:
Nature: Serious
lvl: 40
Date caught: 5/18/2024 at 5:36 pm EST
Ivs: 31/26-29/1-15/1-15/16-25/26-29
I'm now all caught up on my shiny posts! I will be HA hunting on bd to try to get it less messy, so chances are... I may find a shiny before HA again!

Kinda want to shiny hunt for a Zubat and/or Golbat just so I can evolve it into Crobat. Because, C'mon, look at it!
Tumblr media
It's a pink bat that looks pissed off 24/7! (Ironic considering it evolves via friendship)

Reading your recent post on your personal game recommendations, and hearing you're a big pokemon fan 👀
How do you feel about the most recent games? Pokemon hasn't caught my interest lately besides Legends Arceus and the upcoming Legends Z-A. But I wanna know your thoughts! And which one is your favorite game?
Pokemon Sword and Shield were amazing games, I know people shit on the "trees" and it not looking the best, but hands down has some of my all time favorite characters. The game was fun, I enjoyed a good bit of the new Pokemon, and the DLC has yet to be beat for me.
Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl were...games. They were faithful remakes, and I do appreciate that...but I'd rather just boot up the OG games. Good for people who never played DP but underwhelming for a long time fan.
Legends Arceus is fantastic and my FAVORITE modern Pokemon game. It is exactly the sort of fresh take we needed so badly for the series. The story actually had weight to it and it felt like there was an actual threat looming over us. Plus, I actually liked having a smaller dex and shiny hunting was a blast. (I know a lot of people said it was too easy to shiny hunt, they can shut the fuck up)
Scarlet and Violet...oof. On one hand, I do really love the games. I think they are fun, the plot was goofy but enjoyable, having multiple stories to do was a nice change of pace (Arven had me bawling) and I loved how big the world was.
However, I can not excuse how fucking *broken* the game is. I tell everyone who asks me not to buy it, solely because Nintendo was wrong for pushing out a broken game and never fixing it. I don't mind an "ugly" game with bad graphics, but a game that barely functions is too far. I was furious the first months, I preordered the duel pack so I spent around $130 for two broken ass games.
BUT as angry as I am about it, I do constantly find myself going back to it. The DLC added a lot of good things, we got tons of interesting new Pokemon, and when it isn't crashing, lagging or bugging the fuck out, I have a good time.
NOW POKEMON Z-A? BITCH I AM *HYPED* FOR WHAT ITS GOING TO BRING. I am beyond relieved they took this year off to work on shit, I'd rather have a working, polished game than a new game each year. The crumbs we've gotten have me very excited, and maybe I'll have my hopes crushed for a polished game, but if its fun and works I'll be more than satisfied.
NOW my favorite Pokemon game of all time?
Pokemon Ranger.
I know, no one remembers those games and it always seems like everyone hated them, but goddamn it I love them.

i know nothing about pokemon but tell us about the oc!!!
Editing this to put it under the cut bc it is a LONG post whoops
okay so one thing to establish right out the gate is that I am even more inconsistent in Elly’s lore than dc is with their canon so this will all be subject to change the second I get dlc/a new game/really anything
But that aside!
She’s from my own fakemon region (based on Pangaea, I named it Pantoria) but her moms are from Kanto and Paldea. Her first mom’s name is Lucy and is a former Kanto and Johto champion, whereas her other mom’s name is Illumina, though during her trainer days she was known as Illumina La Serena, and she was a Kalos Champion and has also achieved the Champion rank in Paldea. So right off the bat Elly has already been raised alongside some pretty strong Pokémon and battlers.
Lucy moves to Galar temporarily for work and takes Elly with her, and then Elly befriends Hop and they take on the Gym challenge together. She picks Sobble, and names him Lulo. Then everything goes wrong but they save the day and she catches Eternatus. Her mom, who also caught a legendary at age ten, is unfazed. Largely bc Lucy caught Mewtwo, though she had since chosen to release them.
Then comes the post game, where Elly also catches Zacian. Hop decides to become a Pokémon professor and they have their little dlc adventures, and Elly catches even more legendary Pokémon in the Crown Tundra. Lucy’s sister Johanna (who is actually the mom in brilliant diamond but I chose to change that) takes her in for a bit so she can see the sinnoh region, and all of that happens. (I haven’t actually finished brilliant diamond but I have an idea of what happens). While she’s in Sinnoh Arceus decides that she’s the perfect candidate to send back in time to save the world.
So now she’s in Hisui, with no memories, and she gets a Rowlet that she names Dart. Dart does not evolve into the Decidueye Elly felt that she should have expected, but hey, she has no memories anyway, so who is she to question anything?
She fixes all the problems with the frenzied lord and lady pokemon, then survives for a bit in the wild, and clears her name, AND saves the world. And then she meets arceus, who returns her home, though she is allowed to return to Hisui when she wants (bc im a sucker for friendships and I can’t just leave them behind. Also she literally catches Dialga. The time god).
Of course, there’s no time to process this, bc it’s time for school! Summers over, kids. She goes back to Illumina in Paldea and is enrolled in Naranja Academy, where she (you guessed it) saves the world and becomes a champion rank trainer. Nowadays, with the treasure hunt over for her, she publishes an online Pokémon fact magazine with hop, hangs out with her paldean school friends, and time travels back to Hisui sometimes to show Laventon future pokedexes.
All that’s left now is for her to become a Champion in Pantoria! Unfortunately, Pantoria is absolutely massive, bc I decided since my region was fake there was no point cutting corners about it, and has a gym for Every Type. And then extra, if you thought that was too easy. And there’s new types. And there are requests, and every kind of mini activity to complete. There’s also a rough estimate of 600+ characters to befriend, if I did my maths right, based on the amount of towns and other things in the region. So currently Elly is on that adventure, on which she invited all of her friends from present-day games. What could possibly go wrong?
Also wow I didn’t think I was writing that much. Elly has lore, and then she has LORE. she’s my little guy <3

Medea Plays Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: Part I
Tumblr media
Time for my shit and giggles shit-post. I mostly do this for my friends who end up on the fence of buying a game. And seeing as this is the latest Pokemon game, I am all up in this drama. I mean, let’s face it, these games were getting trashed on. What else is new? Sword and Shield got shit on early on because of the national dex and something about mother fucking trees. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl got shit on because of its chibi-ism and no charisma of Platinum. And Legends Arceus got shit on because...I don’t know, internet trolls will find anything to shit on. As always, I’d like to give the benefit of the doubt by playing it myself.
Clefable is unobtainable in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet
Tumblr media
Okay, okay. But in all seriousness, let’s start this off on the right path.
Tumblr media
Literally the second after you choose the language for the game, you get to customize your character. You can even choose eye shapes and eyebrow intensity. Well, here’s my black-ass not smiling. Just like in real life.
Unfortunately, you’re stuck with these whack-ass uniforms where you can’t even change the color to. I guess that’s because you’re attending school now. Let’s meet Director Clavell.
Tumblr media
No. But a pearl point if you got the reference.
Tumblr media
No, this is the bro that heads up the academy you’re going to attend. And for the moment, I’m focusing on playing Scarlet. I’ll probably fuss around with Violet later down the road. Clavell will give you your first pokemon.
Tumblr media
I picked weed kitty. His name is Dr. Dre (or Dre for short). I love you Dr. Dre.
Before leaving, let’s say goodbye to my mother.
Tumblr media
At least she has a room in this game. In past games it looks like the mothers would sleep in the kitchen.
Tumblr media
Ooh, I hope it’s a meatball parm.
Yeah, this game LOVES sandwiches. You even have a classmate that loves making sandwiches. I feel like I’m running into a bunch of Thurman Mermans.
Tumblr media
People eat sandwiches. Pokemon eat sandwiches.
Tumblr media
Give Koraidon or Miraidon your sandwich at the beginning and it’ll save you from a pack of Houndour and become your bicycle (that runs instead of cycles). I’d like to see Ash Ketchum try and break this one. You get Koraidon quite fast as it belonged to Arven and his parent.
Tumblr media
In the past, we’ve gotten certain version exclusives like certain pokemon and gym leaders are only available on a certain game. In this game, that applies to the professors. Either one, Arven is still their kid.
Tumblr media
His parents are Professor Big N***a and Crazy Bitch.
They aren’t really. But come on, you were all thinking the same thing. Well, we’re not really going to worry about the professors for now. It’s time for school.
Tumblr media
Your homeroom teacher is Mr. Jacq-strap. You have classmates of all kinds attending school alongside you. And once you go on your treasure hunt journey, you’ll battle students from the academy.
Tumblr media
What?
Pokemon, what the fuck are you doing? No, seriously. What the fuck is this? I can accept people attending school at any age. But what the fuck is this Harvey Weinstein-looking mother fucker doing in a school uniform, shorts and all?! This is not Pokemon. I’m convinced Family Guy hijacked this and made a pedophile joke. What the fuck?! I seriously do not like the way this guy is looking at me.
I’m sorry, but that set me off. Where was I?
Tumblr media
I’m in my dorm room. Yeah. Nice that my dorm room here is a lot more spacious than the one from when I attended college. And for those who hate Nemona, don’t worry, she won’t be your roommate.
Tumblr media
I’m not sure how to feel about Nemona yet. People either hate her or want to fuck her. I just think that she loves pokemon battles the same way Yumeko Jabami from Kakegurui loves to gamble. They both get wet from it.
On your first day of school, you’re being pushed to do many things. Nemona wants you to go the traditional route of challenging gym leaders and becoming champion. Arven wants you to search for Titan Pokemon.
Tumblr media
Don’t blame me, the game only gives me two choices to your request.
And then there’s some bruh that hacks your phone and wants you to go after Team Star.
Tumblr media
At least when it comes to this last quest, you do get some help from ‘a student’.
Tumblr media
Give Director Clavell some credit, at least he doesn’t look as cringe as that other student. But he was totally obvious in that get-up. Like, Professor Kukui as Masked Royal had more of a disguise.
Tumblr media
Bruh, just stop!
Okay, let’s have some fun in this open world. Let’s teach my team some fun, new moves.
Tumblr media
Sigh. At least getting duplicates hasn’t been as painfully stupid as it was in the Diamond and Pearl remakes. Let’s look at some Pokedex entries.
Tumblr media
Wow. Magikarp is getting burned in this entry.
Tumblr media
Let’s terra! Following Sword and Shield’s dynamax phenomenon, pokemon can terraform and crystalize. A crystalized pokemon. How original!
Tumblr media
ORANGE ISLANDS DID IT FIRST!
ORANGE ISLANDS DID IT FIRST!
ORANGE ISLANDS DID IT FIRST!
WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO ACKNOWLEDGE ORANGE ISLANDS AGAIN, POKEMON?! YOU CAN’T IGNORE IT! IT EXISTS!
Time for a sandwich break.
Tumblr media
Mmm...look at that quality-ass sandwich. I’ll give Pokemon this, at least this sandwich isn’t as cringe-looking as other shit sandwiches.
Tumblr media
Thankfully technology has evolved a bit so we don’t have to make sandwiches that look like they came from Rapsittie Street Kids hell. But not by much.
But it isn’t just sandwiches. There’s a lot of restaurants and different treats to eat in different cities.
Tumblr media
These foods help when it comes to catching pokemon and producing pokemon eggs. Ditto is still being used here. It’s just that you have to put the two pokemon you want to make whoopie on your team when you go on a picnic and keep checking the basket to see if the stork dumped some eggs.
Tumblr media
And sometimes, Mr. Stork might bring more than one egg.
Now, let’s talk about falls.
Tumblr media
First of all, you cannot use your phone as a parachute. That’s just not something. Secondly, if you end up in the water without the use of a swimming aid or fall from a large height, you’ll just go back to the top like nothing happened. If this were Legends Arceus...
Tumblr media
Okay, let’s get into gym battles. First, there are no more trainers in the gym that challenge you while you make your way to the gym leader. Instead, you have to do a task for each gym.
Tumblr media
GOD DAMN IT! Pokemon, I am sick of having to gather other people’s pokemon. I had it up to here when I had to chase that fucking Furfrou back in XY. Yes, I realize this all started back in Johto-times with Sylvester and his Farfetch’d. But the Furfrou one really irritated me.
Tumblr media
One gym down. Seven more to go. Let’s take a break.
This shit-post is brought to you by Every Wich Way Sandwich Shop. The sandwich that makes you ask the question...
Tumblr media
To be continued.

Yeah a lot of the post game is just a mythical/legendary pokemon hunt. Go catch every single mythical pokemon introduced in gen 4 (and gen 5 for some reason?? Those three are just kinda there bc why not I guess. Not telling you which trio of pokemon I'm talking about I wanna see if you can get it yourself lol)
Also I do want to just tell you that there are two pokemon you cannot catch if you do not have pokemon sword/shield or pokemon brilliant diamond/shining pearl. Fortunately it seems though these two don't actually count towards pokedex completion, so you'll still be able to complete the game, you just won't have those two pokemon. Which is a shame because one of them has real cool lore/vibes and the other one is straight up a flower hedgehog and is adorable. Darkrai is a literal creature of nightmares that can trap people in comas just by being around them due to its horrid vibes, and shaymin looks like this
Tumblr media
dang alright then. that’s weird. if it doesn’t count towards the pokédex then whatever but kinda wild you need one of the other games on your system to get them lol
also. believe me i Know What Darkrai Looks Like. you don’t understand. i have personal lore with darkrai. darkrai is part of my soul

Your taste in videogames goes off so hard, I think it every time you mention what games you like, I also love how nuanced you are about the games you play, a lot of people either think a game has zero issues if they love it or if it happens to not be for them they have to pretend like no one should, I really respect your ability to go 'I like this but it has flaws' and 'I dislike this because it's not for me but I see why others would like it', also I fucking love assassin's creed and pokemon so I'm biased
Ha! Thank you! Mostly I like jrpgs but I'll throw mostly a little bit of everything in there.
Just for you, anon, my list of switch games I've played this year according to my switch are:
Pokemon Violet
Harvestella
Okami (replaying- played a long time ago on the WiiU)
Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch (replaying- attempted on ps3 and couldn't get into it)
Trials of Mana (abandoned, really hate some character choices they made, really the older I get the more harshly I judge lolis and pedobait)
Neo: The World Ends With You
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
Rune Factory 5 (abandoned, tried very hard to like it and didn't)
Pokemon Legends Arceus
Pokemon Brilliant Diamond (abandoned nearly instantly for PLA whoops)
Cadence of Hyrule (replayed because I remembered how fun it was the first time around)
Collection of Mana (abandoned, not remembering why)
Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town (abandoned due to pretty much the same problems as RF5)
Hob
Animal Crossing: New Horizons (mostly abandoned until I remember to go back to my island again whoops)
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (replayed because it was fun the first time around on WiiU)
Immortals Fenyx Rising (abandoned, fun premise boring execution, may return to it later)
Enter the Gungeon (replayed, struggled with it on keyboard on Steam, vastly preferred on switch)
Transistor (replayed, same as Gungeon it's not fun to play on a keyboard and way better with a controller)
As for the rest! I try to consider everything that way. I don't always succeed but I do try. And because there are various things that don't chase me away from a title if everything else is strong.
For instance I think the first Witcher is a bad game that definitely deserved its $1 cost I bought it at on Steam. Between bugs and crashes and bad voice acting and really awful UI choices it's a miracle honestly that I stuck around long enough to play the next two. But... at the same time... I stuck around because I liked the characters, the world-building, the story, the concept enough that I was willing to forgive these things moving forward. And I'm glad I did, because I do like the Witcher series as a whole whether games, books, or now the Netflix show. But I think the first two games were, um, not good, and it takes a lot for me to consider returning to them to replay them. Though supposedly they're remaking them to be more like Wild Hunt which, god I hope so, because Wild Hunt fixed almost everything I had a problem with in the initial two.

pokemon alpha sapphire, we really need to talk about the other half of the 6th gen of pokemon games.
because, see, after beating x, i felt burned out on the generation. it's just missing your on so much that you'd expect from a pokemon game, and it has a narrative that doesn't fit the characters they've filled their world with.
so as i jumped into alpha sapphire, i was apprehensive. oh sure, that intro is hitting the nostalgia button hard, but how does it play?
well, i have one word. dexnav. the dexnav is a game changer, letting you know when you've caught all the pokemon in an area, letting you find special ones in that area, and even if letting you hunt specific pokemon you've already caught. between that and the better early game payouts, catching pokemon has never felt better. AND easier to keep track of.
also i don't hate that they got rid of the skates, they felt wrong.
i have played a version to this game before. i have my emerald team, and it sucks. hopefully picking the grass starter in a region filled with water types, while fighting the guys who want to flood the world is going to be a good decision.
and no, i am not above looking for more interesting fire types i've never used. the only upside to the way i played pokemon x is that my experiment worked. i was able to build a team around two old pokemon you usually get in the late game of their respective games. or, at least least, late enough that you'd have to do a complete rebuild of your team.
i had no idea if volcarona and tyranitar could be on a team together, but i feel i pulled it off, even if i did use the bulbasaur they gave me to murder fairies. the real challenge will be taking the x team against the hoenn league mark 2. that's what it has all been about, and unless for some god forsaken reason i buy brilliant diamond or shining pearl, this is where the challenge for my teams of champions ends.
it's justice weird that i'm going to have two hoenn teams. but hey, everyone else gets a crack at the hoenn league, some of them a second chance.
so as much as x ended on kind of a sour note, even with the weird looker storyline, i'm thinking i'm back.

Lol welp guess the game wants me to shiny hunt instead of HA hunt cause it's happened again!!!!
On just a chain of 2 on the poke radar, I get another shiny patch that was shiny primeape.
This makes the 5th shiny of my English bd and the 7th shiny of bd so far!!
I think I might just go mine in the bd underground or watch TV for a bit cause I want to save this shiny luck for Safari week on June 2nd!
Well, with the exception of litwick/lampent hunt ofc.

I started playing Pokemon Scarlet on 7/10/2023. But didn't think to blog about my adventures until just recently. So to catch up: this is my collection of my shinies so far. About half of them were hunted for, the other half were spotted as I ran past them.
Iron Hands - this was hunted for with a friend who has Violet.
Corviknight - this was bred while I was breeding up a perfect IV for Tera raids, the shiny is only 5 perfect IVs.
Gyrados - this one deserves it's own post.
Pawmi - this was a full odds spotted by a friend after their shiny sandwich had run out during a vivillon hunt.
Noivern/Noibat - these two were gotten during an outbreak
Polar Vivillon - the starting hunt for these. This one took a little over an hour to spawn.
Shellos - spotted when hunting a different water pokemon.
Mareep - hunted with a friend.
Voltorb - hunted with a friend, initially I was the one hunting the Mareep, we decided to swap and I saw this within 3 voltorb spawns.
Iron Bundle - hunted with a Violet friend.
Zwelious - hunted with a friend, but not the roaring moon we hoped for, but a nice consolation prize.
Fluttermane - hunted with a friend, while they searched for Violet shinies. This guy spawned in the wall and was near impossible to see.
Scream tail - hunted with a friend while they searched for violet shinies.
Sandygast - ran into this by accident while going to a tera raid.
Croagunk - ran into by accident.
Buizel - ran into by accident.
Lokix - ran into by accident while EV training.
Mudbray - ran into by accident while running to a tera raid.
Gogoat - ran into by accident.
Sandy Shocks - hunted with a friend while they searched for Violet shinies.
Slither Wing - hunted with a friend while they searched for Violet shinies.
Great Tusk - hunted with a friend while they searched for Violet shinies.
Combee - ran into by accident.
Cufant - ran into by accident.
Azurill - ran into by accident.
Brute Bonnet - hunted with a friend while they searched for Violet shinies.
So many shinies already. :3
Tumblr media
For the rest of my living dex:
I currently have all but 3 forms obtainable in SV with my OT - Miradon, Walking Wake, and Iron Leaves. When the DLC releases next month, I plan to expand to all of the newly unlocked Pokemon as well.
I have also completed a playthrough of Brilliant Diamond to get the National Dex unlocked, and have started in both Lets Go: Eevee and Pokemon Sword.

Zichi Played Pokémon Violet
And is going to share his opinions with you!
If you click the readmore, that is. Unlike 99% of the internet, I still respect spoilers.
Tumblr media
Okay, so for the past 3 years, the Pokémon franchise has sat on the edge of oblivion for me. With the burning garbage dump that was Pokémon Sword and Brilliant Diamond still in recent memory, my opinion on the franchise was at its lowest. Legends: Arceus put it on life support, coaxing it over until the next release.
Tumblr media
And let me tell you, Pokémon Violet did not have a strong starting hand. With the reveal of it being released at the end of 2022, I was not impressed.
and here’s the link to my pessimism.
So November 2022 rolls around (or rather December, because I wanted to wait but apparently spoilers don’t matter after a month (seriously where do you guys find the time)) and I have Pokémon Violet in my hands...
Tumblr media
And I was pleasantly surprised...
Tumblr media
... Sort of.
So, in a reversal of my Pokémon Sword review 3 years ago, I’m going to start with what I disliked with the game, followed by what I did like, before giving my final overall opinion. So let’s dive in!
-
1. The poor optimisation
Tumblr media
Yeah, this should surprise nobody who’s played the game, but wow is this game poorly optimised. There are definitely moments when the Switch is obviously struggling to handle stuff under the bonnet, which is hilarious when I consider how Breath of the Wild runs pretty smoothly. I feel pretty vindicated in my opinion that they should have had at least half a year more to really iron out the kinks in the game, but got Christmas rushed by greedy corporates.
I know some people have some severely ugly bugs and graphical glitches, but I’ve never encountered any of the weirder ones shown. Maybe it’s because I was strictly single player only? No idea.
2. “Open” world Pokémon and weird level curves
Tumblr media
The franchise is now three-for-three on swinging and missing the “Open World” idea of Pokémon. Now be certain that I think they did a much better job than Sword and Legends, but they still didn’t get it perfect.
The game very clearly expects you to follow a specific order in terms of its three storylines. You’re clearly expected to fight a particular gym leader before a particular Star Boss, befoe a specific Titan. And if you don’t? Well I found Tulip to be an infuriating and cheap battle, not realising Ryme was the 6th gym leader, not Tulip. As such, Ryme was pathetically easy.
And I did not appreciate the method of keeping players contained, with wild pokemon being obviously over-levelled. It’s basically saying “you have all this freedom, but we’re gonna limit you anyway”
A much better option -in my opinion- would have been to crib notes off of Breath of the Wild. When you defeat one of the bosses in that game, the whole world “levels up”, the monsters get stronger in response to your decision. If we had something like that, where the star bosses, titans and gym leaders all start at “beat me at level 15″ and then after you take any one of them down, increase to “beat me at level 20″ or something like that. It would feel like I have more choice and agency in where I go and what I do.
3. Tera Shard Collecting
Tumblr media
What do you mean 50 of these?!
I did not approve of the requirements to change your tera type being so steep, nor did I approve of them being so awkward and obnoxious to gather.
“Get them in the postgame, or gather them 2 at a time by fighting type-specific raids at 3 stars or above. Oh and they have to match the type you want.”
It got so bad that I resorted to switch clock exploitation to get enough shards for my Gallade. It was not a fun time.
4. Those God Damn Stakes.
Tumblr media
I HATE THOSE STAKES WITH SUCH A PASSION.
If I got some clues about where to find them, and had some way of tracking which stakes I had removed, it would be better, but as it is, it is an obnoxious snipe hunt that everyone is just gonna look up online. The solution of “too easy” is not painstaking and infuriating!
-
Tumblr media
Okay, so that’s the “did not like” page done... Now let’s get into the things I do like.
-
1. Earlier Access to purchasable items.
Tumblr media
I appreciate the fact that several items like life orbs, assault vests and other hold items outside the “+20% to one type” that can now be repeatedly bought, but also that they aren’t limited to postgame. When I found out that nature candies were a gym 6 unlock, I jumped on that shit immediately. Ditto for bottle caps at whatever level they unlocked.
2. Terastalising > Dynamax
Tumblr media
Terastalising just feels so much better than dynamax could ever be. I don’t know why, I just enjoy it more. Something feels more tactical about it rather than just “double hit points”...
Tumblr media
I will admit however, that the conditions for recharging your tera orb are rather weird, instead of once per battle, it’s once per pokecenter visit? If they didn’t do that, I’d definitely love it more.
3. The Story and my children the characters.
Tumblr media
Oh my God Arven and Penny I’m your dad now I will never let anything bad happen to you.
My God did I get invested in the characters this time around. And not just the main three that journey with the protagonist. Director Clavell, most of the teachers, nearly all the gym leaders, I enjoyed watching them on the screen, getting glimpses into their personalities.
The three exceptions to this however, have to be Ms Tyme, who I love to hate for her “11 pokeballs” bullshit, Tulip for being in an obnoxious place for the 7th gym leader and Geeta for just... Falling flat. (Doesn’t help that her team makes absolutely zero sense. Why is your trap-setter sent out last Geeta)
Champions seems to not be hitting it anymore, not since the utter fuck up that was Leon.
Tumblr media
But seriously, the story -or rather, the stories this time around felt so much more alive. The Victory Road story arc was definitely the weakest, but that was the obligatory “challenge the gym leaders” route, and at least the gym leaders themselves picked up some of the slack. The Titan storyline broke my heart and managed to turn my opinion on Arven around 100% (and while I understand your frustrations Arven, do not take them out on my sweet motorcycle dragon boi) and finally... Starfall street.
4. Team Star and Starfall Street
Tumblr media
So one of my bigger criticisms of Pokémon Sword was how Team Yell was a worse Team Skull. Team Star kind of falls into the same category as those two of being more a nuisance than a threat like the oldschool teams like Rocket and Galactic.
But.
Tumblr media
Team Star works. They work in a way Team Yell could never work. It helps that Team Star has more faces and personality to attach to them and isn’t used as a curveball from “the real villains”, but it also helps that the background and lore also works alongside their personalities and you can understand how things ended up the way they did...
This part has unavoidable spoilers, feel free to skip.
Tumblr media
Plus, Team Star’s story hit very close to home. I too was bullied in a school that did nothing because they were more concerned with their reputation. I too lashed out at the bullies when it got too much to handle, and I too was villified for standing up to it because nobody else would help. I wanted to see them vindicated for their actions. And let me tell you, it endeared me to Director Clavell -who I really didn’t care much for at the beginning- when he ultimately did the team (and Penny) right.

The spoilers stop here
Tumblr media
One criticism I do have for Team Star though, is that we haven’t had a true antagonist team in a while. At least a proper antagonist team that is at the forefront, not an Aether/Macro Cosmos that gets shoehorned in at the last hour as a “surprise” factor. I’d like to see a more serious villain team soon, something that feels threatening, but is also a consistant threat.
5. The Pokémon are pretty cool too
Tumblr media
If there’s one thing I like, it’s how the newer generations do a pretty good job of nailing the new pokemon and making them interesting. We’ll just gloss over generations 5 and 7 okay kthx.
Tinkaton and Ceruledge are some of my top picks for this generation, but I also have to give a loud and warm shoutout to the new evolutions and regional forms. Clodsire ended up on one of my teams almost immediately, and while I had to drop Dudunsparce after a while, the gurran lagaan pokemon pulled its weight and endeared itself to me. But I also appreciate Annihilape, Firagarif and Kingambit for being great additions and Toedscruel and Wugtrio being an interesting alternative to regional forms. I hope we see more of these convergant evolution ideas.
Tumblr media
I also love the look of the future Paradox Pokémon for the most part. However, as I only reached the first credits, I haven’t had much to do with them and I kinda wish we got to see more of them early on. Iron Treads is the only one before the final storyline we see, and honestly I prefer how Great Tusk looks by a mile. And if anyone is asking, yes, I did manipulate the final boss battle for a Gallade vs Iron Valiant battle, and it was epic.
So Overall...
Tumblr media
Pokémon Violet did not have a clean start to life with its glitches, bugs and obvious lack of quality testing. However, even with this, I actually finished the main storyline happily. That is something Ultra Sun and Brillitant Diamond cannot claim, and Pokémon Sword can only claim via technicality, because I forced myself to.
People who know me personally know that I can rant for hours on end about the Tunnel Scene in Pokémon Sword, the epitome of bad writing and awful design in my opinion. I have no such equivalent in Violet, there was no scene, event or action that had me gnawing at my teeth. Quite the opposite, there were plenty of scenes that tugged at my heart, made me feel for these characters and invested me in their storylines. I can’t think of any character that I hate that I don’t love to hate, there isn’t a plot device that made me think “this is stupid”. It all... Works.
Tumblr media
When and if Violet drops some DLC, I’m actually going to consider it this time around. If the game got some polish and testing -and maybe cribbed some notes from Breath of the Wild- I would be happy to say that Violet would be in the top 10 -maybe top 5- games across the whole franchise, and with Titans like Black/White, Mystery Dungeon Explorers and Heart Gold/Soul Silver in that bracket, that is no easy feat.
I’m actually hopeful for the franchise’s future! I want to see more of this quality guys!

Loooooong story, so a Read More is needed. Click through if you enjoy talk of Nintendo, handhelds, and a shitload of Pokemon talk.
Earlier today I went on a hunting spree, looking for all my gaming handhelds. All of them are Nintendo, and I have at least one of most versions going back to the original Game Boy.
My original Game Boy is actually a "recent" acquisition. When I was a kid, I had the grey brick. It was my favorite thing in the world. When the Game Boy Pocket came out, I got it for Christmas. My original? I was "asked" (read: guilted/forced) to give it to my sister's then best friend, so she could play games with us, as her parents weren't able to afford to buy her one. I hated doing it then; I see the wisdom now and honestly, I'm a little angry at my younger self for not just offering it.
Anyway. For years it was the ONLY one I was missing of the line. I had and kept the others (Pocket, Color, Advance & SP, DS, 3DS, 3DS XL, and Switch), and legit, ALL of them are still in working order. But not the original.
At a con in 2018, I spotted a games vendor with tons of Nintendo stuff. And there, lying on their table, was a beauty. An original Game Boy...in green. The vendor informed me that the green one was a Japanese import (not sure if true, didn't care if not). I informed him it was the only one I was missing, and that green is my favorite color, and inquired on the price.
$45.
SOLD.
I had about $300 total to spend on souvenirs. This was a FIND. If it had cost ALL my spending money, I would have spent it.
It works like a dream, btw.
My Pocket and Color have been MIA since about 2013. I know they're around here somewhere. Just not sure which box I put them in. It's probably the same box that has my Advance SP's charger. I also managed to find my GB Advance: a special one, the gold New York Pokemon Center edition. (My sister and I were very lucky that year.)
(I do know I sound kind of spoiled, having all these things and not having had to ever sell them. I know I'm privileged. Trust me. If I can manage to not ever have to sell my collection, I won't. If I have to ever sell my things, they'll be the very last things I do. And hopefully to someone who will appreciate them.)
What spurred me to do this? I wanted to finally catalogue all my Pokemon games. The name I gave each Trainer, what starter I picked, and any relevant notes.
Do I have all the games? Not myself. But between my sister and I, we do. And yes, still have them. Some don't work, but they're still in the collection. (My sister no longer plays. Hasn't since Black & White. Wish me luck in attempting to nab her copies! And no, I will not overwrite her games. I want to keep them mostly intact and maybe try to bring over any 'mon I can.)
I've tried to give each Trainer a unique name since Gen 2, so that when I trade up a 'mon, I can trace it back to what game/gen it originated in. In cases where I own both/all the games in a set, each one has a unique name, as well as alternating gender for games you can choose it.
For instance: - My sister had Ruby; I had Sapphire. Trainer's name was Lilya. - I have both Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. BD's trainer is Melpomene; SP's trainer is Morpheus. (I'm a Greek mythology nerd; it's also a reference to the book series I've been writing. Two royal siblings, and Morpheus is older.)
So I found the games (most of them, at least), and piled them up. Charged the systems that required it, fresh batteries in the ones that take 'em. (BTW, the 3DS and the 3DS XL can use the same charger. I misplaced one of them, so this is a nice realization.)
Games in, on, check Trainer/starter. Enter data in spreadsheet. Save game, turn off; insert next one. Repeat.
Here's what the cataloguing revealed:
- 1 game currently MIA (Sun) - 2 games busted and data loss (original Silver cart. and Pearl cart.) - 1 game half-busted (Sapphire's internal clock borked) - 4 games total with original trainer and starter long gone (reset, likely multiple times in some cases) - majority of transferrable Pokemon transferred out and up (Pokemon Bank, Pokemon Home, or on higher gen cart.) - at least 6(!) total games with some version of my name (Jordan/Jordi) as the trainer name, so would make figuring out provenance of Pokemon very fuzzy for earlier gen catches - I FOUND MY SHINY MEW! It's in Ultra Moon.
I don't remember if Legendaries/Mythics can be traded into Bank/Home and up. I HOPE they can. My Shiny is a "recent" trade but... I have a legit Mew I've had since Yellow. It's ALSO in UM. And I desperately want to make sure I can keep it. The Mew was given to me in middle school by a friend who got it in either Japan or Korea (I can't remember which) and hated it. Mew's always been my fave 'mon, so he gave it to me. It's been my lucky 'mon. It's level 100 now. If it can't be transferred out and up, at least I know where the little one is now.
I'm pretty sure the Shiny Mew is a hacked one; I got it in a Wonder Trade, so no idea of the provenance of it. Don't care. Shiny Mew is my absolute fave; it's blue, it's Mew.
I also have tried the Mew glitch in Yellow multiple times over the years. It's never worked for me. But...my Yellow is one of the games that I evidently reset and reset and reset (after trading stuff out and up). So I might try it a couple hundred more times. I know I still have the cables somewhere that the old systems required for trading, and we have enough systems that are compatible with the cables and games. So theoretically, if I can get it to work, I can get the Mew out.
I've also had some people try to get me to admit my "legit" traded Mew was also hacked. My friend's parents confirmed their vacation to...I think Japan or Korea, really can't remember after all this time. Met his pen pal there, and his pen pal had an extra Mew from an event that he gave my friend. So it is, as far as I know, and as far as my friend knew, legit. (Looking at the Mew events from around that time and prior, they were all in Japan. So it's a Japanese Mew. But I'm not sure of my friend's pen pal's nationality, and can't remember what country they resided in that his family visited on vacation.)
And while on this cataloguing excursion, I discovered that I have 2 copies each of Yellow and Silver. One each of a hard copy (cartridge), and one each of a digital copy on my 3DS XL. Neither digital copy has been completed, either. The digital copies are nice because I'll be 36 in two weeks and the original Game Boy's screen is a NIGHTMARE for my broken-ass eyes now. (Diabetes isn't helping my eyesight any, either.) So I can play Yellow on a screen that actually lets me SEE SHIT.
And as for Silver? The cartridge is busted. The internal stuff is so old that not only is the internal clock broken, but it's corrupted to the point it won't save. So if you start a new game, you either can't turn it off EVER, or you have to start over from the beginning every time. Kinda gives an old Nintendo fan war flashbacks of Super Mario Bros. 3, actually... The digital copy of Silver ACTUALLY SAVES. I've apparently got a game started on it, too. It's one of the Jordans. I might restart that and give them a different name, since I'm not too far in.
The other totally busted game is my hard copy of Pearl. I put it in the system, tap it to play, and...the system crashes. So that's nice. It's sister title, Diamond? Either I let my best friend play it, because the trainer's his nickname, or it's a copy I bought that just coincidentally has that name. At least I have Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and they're basically the same game as before.
If I can't snag my sister's copies of the other games, I might see about attempting to buy them. Slowly. Probably from newest gen to oldest, though at the rate I could afford them now, the Gen 1's might end up prohibitively expensive. I might also at some point attempt to snag physical copies of the digital ones I own. Just in case. Physical media will always beat downloads for me. It's the reason I still have DVDs.
Okay, this is seriously long enough. I'm going back to playing Pokemon. Scarlet, this time. Maybe with a side of Arceus if I get bored.

Just...super annoyed with Pokémon Switch games banning the GTS from the game just so they can make you effectively by another game to use it. And even then, when the new games come out, you cannot use it until the make it compatible which takes another three months.
It's very inconvenient for someone like me who is an introvert and does not communicate regularly online with people. When the GTS was in the game, I could just ask for the Pokémon I want and offer a fair trade without actually communicating. Usually a version exclusive or a trade evolution. And it was available to use from the start. Now you have to wait to use it on the app. And by the time they release it, I'm probably burnt out from playing and don't want to bother.
That's what happened to me in BDSP. All I wanted was a Kecleon just so I can change the color of my Pokétch. Gor some reason they decided to make this a Brilliant Diamond exclusive. I have Kecleon in Pokémon Home but at thr time it was incompatible eith BDSP so I couldn't add it to the game. The only way was to ask someone online for one cause I don't know any IRL people who play Pokemon. Which again, is an uncomfortable thing for me to do. Really haven't played Shining Pearl since last year.
Was the GTS perfect? No. It had a bad problem of people asking for unfair trades. Most were probably just little kids who didn't know any better. But it was still better than removing them from the games and deligating them to a phone app. Which is another problem. Not everyone has a smart phone.
I hate that gamefreak is alienating certain people from completing their dexs. "But this has been a thing since the beginning". Yes it has. But then at least I was a kid and had contact with many others who played Pokémon so it wasn't much of an issue. And you really weren't rewarded anything for completing the dex. Just a certificate which I could do without. But they gift you the shiny charm since Gen V. Something very valuable to people who want to shiny hunt.
At the very least they can make Pokémon Home compatible with the new games upon release. But they won't. They are far more concerned either holiday sales. It's just so frustrating.
