Just in case you needed another reason to wash your hands... 

The vibrant emerald green cloth on these bindings gets its shocking color from copper acetoarsenite, more commonly known as arsenic. The inorganic pigment was also famously used in Victorian era wallpaper. 

The bindings seen here, along with others in our collection, were tested by Melissa Tedone, Conservator at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, in December 2019 as part of the Poison Book Project. The sample is comprised largely of green cloth case bindings, but some green paper (upper left) also tested positive. They have since been properly rehoused, along with updated safe handling instructions. Read more about the Poison Book Project here.

Do you have a root fetish? There is something magically alluring and mysterious to roots. Whether they are dried and preserved in an apothecary, beckoning with their gnarled charm, or fresh roots that make the soil groan as they are pulled up. Roots contain the soul of the plant, it’s vital for and it’s essence. Humanoid roots are even more magical because of their resemblance and correspondence to the human form. They are considered to be something different from the genius of the plant. Roots have slightly different characteristics that are all their own. They make ready vessels for spirits, but often already contain one of their own. These human shaped o she takes whether roots, poppets or dollies are the kind of fetishes we are talking about. They generally house some form of spirit and are worked with in a regular basis to aid in magical workings but also to build a rapport with the spiritus radix r spirit of the root. Many plant focused practitioners will work with plants as familiar spirits and creating root fetishes is one way to do this. This is a henbane root and it’s vessel ready to be consecrated, dressed and awakened. The Poison Path looks and many different cultures and time periods including modern medicine and bio-chemistry to understand these enigmatic plants and how they may be applied in one’s spiritual practice. There are those who focus on specific groups of plants or traditions within a specific culture. Many practitioners with European ancestry look to those plants commonly found in the history and lore of their ancestors. This is a really interesting read if you are in to toxicology and ancient warfare! Mayor covers botanical toxins, arrow poisons and poisoned waters as well as other ingenious ancient weapons. From Scorpion bombs and swarms of bees to indigenous people whose saliva is toxic; Mayor explore the origins of some of these mythological sounding weapons. I actually used the poison arrow chapter as a reference for my book. It is interesting reading how closely guarded these poisonous and incendiary formulas were. Understanding Medicinal Plants: Their Chemical and Therapeutic Action by Bryan A. Hanson is one of my favorite books on the chemical side of medicinal herbalism, really breaking down and studying the constituents and their behavior. This book is part of many clinical herbalism programs. I just did a more detailed post on this book on my Patreon. I just learned and interesting thing about Scythian arrows. Besides being dipped in a poison, Scythian arrows were made using an arsenical copper. This metal alloy made the arrows themselves poisonous. Shards of arrows would often break off in the body leaving behind the poisonous metal.
