COD Fic // Callsign: Sunshine // Chapter 10: Father's Daughter
Tumblr media
hello hi yes more angsty hand holding in this chapter UR WELCOME I had to do a lil bit o' research for this one to make sure all my i's were dotted n' shit, so I am hopeful everything comes across in a way that tracks with reality as much as possible and it all makes sense and also that u love it and honestly if u don't that's really none of my business
Callsign: Sunshine // Chapter 10 // Father's Daughter
.................................................................. CWs: Explicit language, vague mentions of past trauma and recovery, descriptions of guns
Characters: Simon "Ghost" Riley, Reader (You), Kyle "Gaz" Garrick, Johnny "Soap" MacTavish
Chapter Excerpt:
"You won't find it anywhere. It doesn't exist."
Soap frowns. "What d'you mean?"
You stare at them -- these men you hardly know. They seem so earnest. You hate that. You hate that you only have one thing to offer them -- a measly supply of information relative to your crazed scientist father's end-of-life havoc-wreaking.
You tighten your grip on Ghost's fingers, and he runs a comforting thumb along your pinky.
"Toward the end... My father...he got more and more erratic. His behaviors, his decisions. They didn't make sense. He wasn't himself."
Gaz leans forward on his elbows, nudging his bowl to the side. "In what way?"
"He stopped taking my calls--"
"Because you were discharged?"
You try not to feel the sting of that word on someone else's tongue, but it's hard. Even after all this time.
"Partially, maybe," you ponder. "But he'd been deteriorating even before that. I'd thought he was just manic -- obsessed with the task at hand. That wasn't entirely out of the ordinary. But he was taking shortcuts he wouldn't normally. He told me one day that..." You trail off. The memory is like a bloodstain.
"Dad...dad, slow down."
"It's the breakthrough of a century, Sunny," your father speaks to you through rough, choppy pants, as though he's got blades in his lungs. He's been chain-smoking again.
"This...this will be my legacy," he goes on. "Everything I've worked for, everything I've done. Nothing will top this. It's perfect -- it's the perfect specimen, I know it is."
"Dad, what about trials?"
"I don't fucking need trials! We'll go strai--"
"But, you're pre-clinical, you can't proceed on humans without testing the potential implicatio--"
"Who the fuck do you work for, the FDA? I don't have to do shit!"
"But the ethics of jumping straight to--"
Your father's voice is as cold as you've ever heard it when he cuts you off again. "Integrity without knowledge is weak and useless, Sunny. You know this."
There's a momentary, bitter pause as you digest his words. Words you know, words he's recited to you a hundred times. "Dad," you plead. "There's anoth--"
"Goodbye, Sunny."
The line goes dead.
The sensation of Ghost squeezing your knee again brings you back to the present.

Gen's Top 100 DBDA Fics - PART 6
For all caveats/rules/backstory, please read the Master Post
Lemonade & Sunrises By: paraph @paraphwrites Rating: M Tags: AU - A Quiet Place, Angst, Fluff, Hurt/Comfort Summary: Set in "The Quiet Place" universe. Edwin and Charles navigate their time through New York City through the first year of the invasion. * No prior lore for either fandom required to enjoy! My Notes: This one is truly a work of art with its prose and story composition. I have never seen The Quiet Place, but damn did this fic make me want to.
Letters addressed to the fire By: zmorak @zmorak Rating: T Tags: AU - WW1, Hurt No Comfort, Diary/Journal, Angst, Slow Burn Summary: Diary excerpts of Lance Corporal Edwin Nicholas Payne (1900-1989), British Foreign Correspondent, Journalist, and Poet, dated between August 15th and November 1st, 1916, Somme. *** You, Charles, may be the best man and the kindest soul I have ever had the luck to meet. I will not delude myself so much as to think that we will see each other in old age, but I do dearly hope that in the years to come, we will meet again; with both of us standing on our own two feet, we'll share a bottle of scotch, and reminisce with grief-ridden fondness about this inferno that brought us together. My Notes: This fic made me cry, and not many fics do that. The day I first recommended this in the server everyone reported back that they cried. It was a very memorable day lol. Really a beautiful piece of work. I love historical fiction and the quality of the prose is truly spectacular.
Loud Bark, Deep Bite By: hyperiion Rating: M Tags: Case Fic, Fluff and Angst, First Kiss, Protective Charles Rowland Summary: Charles didn’t mind being underestimated. When he told people he was the brawn of the detective duo, they usually gave a small, placating smile. Charles would take a hundred of those moments for just one of these: when the demon, ghoul, or witch of the week gave him an appraising glance and found him wanting, only to find that ghost-strength is so much more than appearances. A year after the events in Port Townsend, the Dead Boy (and One Psychic Girl) Detective Agency has fallen into a rhythm with cases. A mage kidnapping ghosts upends their rhythm, and with it, Charles' bottled-up feelings. My Notes: Ghost soup! In this case fic, the crew faces a mage kidnapping ghosts! I particularly like the final confrontation because Charles gets to be all heroic.
Nothing Left to Hide By: RoseGanymede95 @oxbellows Rating: NR Tags: Hell Aftermath, Arachnophobia, Protective Charles Rowland Summary: “You’re-” Charles has to stop before any more words can come through, because another round of sobbing overtakes him, forcefully enough Edwin thinks a living boy might break his ribs like this. “You’re. Scared.” Charles tries again, and the words sound like they’re being punched out of him, each one a broken, jagged thing, “Of. Spiders." Grief crashes down on Edwin like a physical weight. This is about Hell. My Notes: Charles having a breakdown over Edwin's fear of spiders is not something I knew I needed, but it is spectacular.
Of a youth who loves me By: Aliquis @riceinthechurch Rating: T Tags: Friends to Lovers, Codependency, Protective Charles Rowland, First Kiss, Religious Guilt Summary: The boy Charles rescued from Hell, so frail without his waistcoat and ridiculous britches, had been nearly unrecognizable as his best friend. Charles would do anything, compromise any dignity, to make sure Edwin never has to return to the pit. He just has to figure out how. My Notes: Charles loves Edwin so much that he tries to make a deal with a demon to sacrifice himself instead and it is just so in character (and dumb) of him. I love Edwin being super pissed about it too because that is also perfectly in character!
Overloaded By: babyseraphim @babyseraphim Rating: T Tags: Chronic Pain, Hurt/Comfort, Protective Charles Rowland Summary: Before Edwin had been strapped to Esther’s torture table and very rudely used as a magical battery, he had been under the impression that the use of iron was the only way to inflict pain upon ghosts in the mortal realm. However, because he was Edwin Payne and the universe seemed intent on making him pay for his ridiculously on-the-nose surname for all of eternity, those rules apparently did not apply to him. My Notes: Edwin dealing with long term pain after Esther's torture table is not something I had even considered until I read this fic and let me tell you the concept has stuck with me. Especially since (spoilers) the pain doesn't go away. This is something that Edwin has to just deal with. The way that Charles assures Edwin that he isn't a bother and that they will stick together through this is heart warming
Promises & Voids By: NuriaSchnee @nuria-schnee Rating: M Tags: Romance, Angst with a Happy Ending, Hurt/Comfort, Sickfic, Temporary Character Death, Protective Charles Rowland Summary: Edwin gets hit with a "death" curse, which eats his soul away until he disappears completely. With no way to stop it or break it, Edwin spends his last hours with Charles, and makes him promise that he will continue their work in the agency without him. My Notes: You want to cry? Here's a fic for you. It does have a happy ending to make up for it, but DAMN that first chapter broke my heart. Charles holding onto a fading Edwin until he disappears is just HEARTBREAKING!
remind me that i am a fool By: blladnna Rating: G Tags: AU - Canon Divergence, Hurt/Comfort, Angst, Protective Charles Rowland, Hurt Edwin Payne Summary: When Charles saw the boy curled up at the end of the hallway, his first thought was that it couldn’t possibly be his best mate. The figure had none of Edwin’s prim and proper urgency, lacked his drive, his grace. Whoever the boy at the end of the hallway was, his spirit had been truly and thoroughly broken. As he approached, Charles saw that he was wrong—that boy was Edwin, just not any version of him Charles had ever seen. “Please go away, Charles," Edwin said. "You’re being cruel.” or When Edwin goes back to Hell, instead of being torn apart on loop, he suffers through the only pain worse. Watching it happen to Charles. My Notes: I really love fics that make Hell worse and this one fits the bill. Charles trying to convince Edwin that he is *real* this time is just so good.
right. never finished it. By: taableclofh Rating: M Tags: AU - Canon Divergence, Angst with a Happy Ending, Love Confessions, First Kiss, Orpheus and Eurydice Summary: Charles never knew what the ending to Orpheus and Eurydice’s story was. Never bothered to finish it. Never felt the need to, did he? All he knows is that he cannot exist in a world where Edwin is not there beside him. My Notes: Getting out of hell is a lot harder in this fic. Edwin not remembering anything between his different reincarnations after his various deaths leads to some interesting development for Charles as we get to see him change while Edwin stays the same.
The Case of the Broken Orb By: JJ_Queenie Rating: NR Tags: Love Confessions, Inebriated Edwin, Protective Charles Rowland, Dreamsharing, Hurt/Comfort, Drunken Shenanigans, Drunken Confessions Summary: Edwin breaks an orb that shows a person's greatest dream/desire and absorbs its powers, so now whenever someone touches him he sees their greatest dreams. Unfortunately the dream energy is also making him incredibly loopy and he is doing things and spouting out things he never normally would. His friends try to scramble to find a cure while also making sure Edwin doesn't get into too much trouble, soon finding that an inebriated Edwin is a lot harder to contain than they initially expected. My Notes: Usually, I don't go for humorous fics, but this one is HILARIOUS! Edwin without any inhibitions is a sight to behold! But this fic is not only funny, it's really heartfelt <3

Stole this book ask thing I saw @ruinconstellation reblog (p.s. tag you're it!) cause I love talking about books.
1) Last book I read:
Days Without End by Sebastian Barry. Stunningly lyrical prose, especially the descriptions of the early US landscape. Also a nuanced, complex, and difficult read about American immigrants, indigenous peoples, the way forces beyond their control pitted them against each other and the moments of love that shine through regardless. The main character is queer in a way that is very simple and natural, which I enjoyed as well. Definitely a hard read with no heroes and a lot of villains, but well worth it.
2) A book I recommend:
Easy Beauty by Chloe Cooper Jones.
Y'all. READ THIS BOOK. An intimate portrait of what it's like to live with a severe and very visible physical disability. Cooper Jones has a PhD in philosophy and is interested in how we conceive of beauty, and what that means for someone who's body will never be considered conventionally beautiful. However, it's written more like a memoir, and is super accessible and imminently readable.
3) A book that I couldn’t put down:
The Wager by David Grann. Great real life shipwreck story, including a bunch of excerpts from the diary of famous poet John Keats' uncle, who was one of the shipwrecked men. What really, really got to me in this one was the division into factions and the various reactions to offered help from the indigenous people.
4) A book I’ve read twice (or more)
Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy. Wanderlust, ecological grief, complicated romantic relationships, and a protagonist who can't stop leaving but loves so hard she's willing to die for it. Plus, boats! Scientific research, sort of! Found family! This book was like reading my own soul.
5) A book on my TBR
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. I've been meaning to read it and just picked it up at an estate sale!
6) A book I’ve put down
Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold. I read The Curse of Chalion and loved it, but this one just didn't grab me the same way. Maybe it wasn't the right time.
7) A book on my wish list
Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. I've wanted to read it for ages but just haven't gotten around to it.
8) A favourite book from childhood
Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith. I read it so much my copy it's basically disintegrating. I really resonated with the complexity of Mel-- a young woman who is very practical and unimpressed by fanciness/politics but who comes to understand and value these things, and the people who use them, without losing herself.
9) A book you would give a friend
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. Really interesting take on what a flu pandemic that wipes out 99% of the world's population would leave behind, with a focus on the importance of art. I'd have them read it and then FORCE them to watch the TV series of the same name, because I am DESPERATE to talk to someone about the changes they made (which I absolutely LOVVVVEEE)
10) The most books you own by a single author
Probably Tamora Pierce?
11) A nonfiction book you own
LOTS but I'm gonna say Kon Tiki by Thor Heyerdahl. One of my very first true adventure books and so near and dear to my heart. Those guys really did float on a raft from Peru to Tahiti! For science!
12) what are you currently reading
Just started Lucky Red by Claudia Cravens. I'm a ho for queer westerns.
13) what are you planning on reading next?
I have a couple possibilities on deck, so it just depends on what grabs me (or what comes in from my library holds first). Wavewalker by Suzanne Heywood is by next hold on Libby--I'm fascinated by memoirs about what looked like a charmed life from the outside but was in reality anything but.

She hides your things
Can’t find your vape
Open her door
She’s laying in bed
You see a boob
No…there’s two boobs
In between is your vape
She’s been waiting for you
You get excited
She sees the excitement on your face
Your heart races as you walk towards her
She whispers, “I found your vape”, then smirks, looking down at her bare chest
You follow her eyes, set on the prize
Her soft cold hands touch yours
It’s getting hard to breathe, you don’t believe it
She guides your hands towards her breast, softer, colder than her hands
You know what you have to do
She moans seductively “I need this”
Flabbergasted, you rip your hand away, yelling defiantly, “humbug!”
You take your vape off her chest and storm out

After he was killed, his poem “If I Must Die” became a worldwide viral sensation, a window into the soul of the man who’d been ripped from the world. The poem is addressed to his daughter Shaymaa Refaat Alareer, and is a plea to her and all of us to keep hope for a better world alive. “If I must die/you must live/to tell my story/to tell my story/to sell my things/to buy a piece of cloth/and some strings/(make it white with a long tail)/so that a child, somewhere in Gaza/while looking heaven in the eye/awaiting his dad who left in a blaze—and bid no one farewell/not even to his flesh/not even to himself—sees the kite/my kite you made/flying up above/and thinks for a moment an angel is there/bringing back love.”
He then concludes:
If I must die let it bring hope let it be a tale
On December 10, Refaat’s life will be published as a tale. The book, “If I Must Die,” is a collection of his poetry and prose, along with excerpts of important interviews he gave, compiled by his friend and student Yousef Aljamal.

Be My Favorite Name meanings. And a bonus connecting of some shaky dots Spoilers for ep 5&6.
I am not Thai, I am just learning Thai. So please correct me if I get anything wrong.
ปีแสง Pisaeng - lightyear(s) (ปี year, แสว light ray)
บทกวี BotKawi - Poetry, Poem (Song, Ballad), กวี Kawi poet
แพรไหม Pearmai silk (both แพร Pear and ไหม Mai can mean silk)
น็อต Knot - English loanword for Nut or Knot
แม็กซ์ Max - English given name
ทวี Thawi (Kawi’s dad) - to multiply, increase, double
พงษธร Phongsathorn (Pearmai’s dad) - means heir? Maybe? Isn't obviously a common word like the kids'
ตรีดาว Treedao (Pisaeng’s mom)- (ตรี- Sanskrit loanword for 3, ดาว is star) So it's something like Three Stars, Third star, Tristar
บทกวีของปีแสง (Name of the show in Thai) -Poetry of Lightyears, Lightyear’s Poetry, Could also be Song of Lightyears.
And now, In this essay I will connect my obsession with a book I can't read, capitalists, and Max.
Let's start with the book Max is reading here.
Tumblr media
"โฉมหน้าศักดินาไทย" "True Face of Thai Feudalism" by Jit Poumisak, who wrote under different pen names including Kawi Kanmuang (Political Poet) and Kawi Srisayam (Siamese Poet) (source: wiki) It is a different take on Thai history, looking at it through a Marxist lens. Here is a TLDR, but only part 1. The whole thing is a great read, I just wish it was the whole thing with more details.
If you don’t want to read that whole thing here is an excerpt. (And a tldr after if this is also too much)
The division of the peasantry into separated plots of land meant it was difficult to develop solidarity and organise to protect their class interests. The dominant Saktina class also developed ideological doctrines that repressed the wills of the peasantry. This caused the peasant class to only rise up in intermittent disorganised rebellions that were easily crushed. As a result, the peasants turned to other classes for leadership. Their closest point of contact with the Saktina system was their landlord, who at the beginning of the Saktina period, could harness the formless and seemingly directionless anger of the peasantry as a means to their own ends to further their own interests. The peasantry also later turned to the emergent middle class for allyship as they both shared grievances with the Saktina class, but the emergent middle class’ antagonism with the Saktina class was more economic than existential, hence they were willing to collaborate to develop an economic structure that prioritised a ‘liberal trade-and-industry’ system (capitalism), while maintaining the caste characteristics of Saktina.
TLDR-the peasants couldn’t trust the newly emerging capitalists to help them fight against their common enemy, because capitalism.
My thinnest connection is Kawi's name being the same as the pen name. But that might just be because Kawi is a poet/songwriter.
Now on to Max and Pisaeng's conversation. First thing that happens is Max saying "I can't go out tonight, I don't have as much money as you to party every night"
Tumblr media
Pisaeng goes on to talk about how Pear and Kawi are busy, and Not's group sucks.
Tumblr media
Max puts out a warning shot, Oh, are we friends? At this moment I Max knows he's with a rich boy who is very much caught up in his own mind, but he doesn't know how Pisaeng really is and is being cautious.
Tumblr media
"Max, Can I ask you something?" Then we get the saddest Max face.
Tumblr media
So what does Max do? He stops scrolling and pulls out this video, talking about how Treedao is a capitalist in a lot of different businesses, and probably getting into more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So she's still looking to make more, and now looking to get into politics. And before she actually start talking about policy, Max askes Pisaeng.
Tumblr media
He asks if Pisaeng knows Treedao since they share a last name. Last names in Thailand are pretty unique, so if you share a last name you probably are related. Max already knew of Treedao's policies. This was Max testing Pisaeng to see how he feels about his capitalist-turning-politician mom(relative). The woman who seems to be saying all the right things, while Pisaeng's is feeling isolated.
I don’t think Max trusts Treedao.

Hey, I just wanted to ask where do you get your poetry and Chapter titles from! I think they're so perfect for the stories you write, I was wondering the thought process behind the choices you made. The little snippets made me go and research on my own, but I wonder where you got them from...
thank you so much :'') i loved choosing those chapter titles!
for frog in a well, the chapter titles are japanese idioms and/or proverbs. some of them, i already know, and most i googled personally. i choose them based on what's going on in the chapter or whatever 'learning lesson' the main characters go through, or some realization.
for among dawn flowers (the face of god), chapters 1-6 are direct excerpts and lines from genji monogatari by murasaki shikibu while chapters 7-8 are from the temple of the golden pavilion by mishima yukio, one of my favorite works of literature. and as always, i choose the quotes based on what's going on in the character's heads or just internal turmoil. and of course, the title of the fic came from matsuo bashō's poem!
for today, i, too, the title of the fic comes from my favorite song by vaundy of the same name. the first chapter's title comes from azure & claude which is both a manga and a light novel. i don't think the second chapter's title came from somewhere afaik...
as for the quotes, i have my personal favorite japanese poets so i take every opportunity to quote them! if you want to see more from them, you can head on to this site. it's full of waka poetry ^^ make sure to check out my favorites, lord ari'ie and ariwara no narihara!
i'm pretty sure those are the only titles with a theme that i've made so far.

Intro: Favorite Mongolian Authors & more
#slavic roots western mind
I've always had an interest in Mongolia, primarily because there's literally so little international news coverage, at least in my neck of the woods so to speak.
Despite my Mongolian language learning attempts being paused for the time being, I nonetheless continue to fall in love with Mongolian literature with every read, especially with poetry, which is why I've wanted to share my favourite authors.
Here's my quick list of Mongolian authors who's works I've read so far (and a few that are on my to-read radar).
1. Galsan Tschinag
My absolutely favorite poet, born in Mongolia in 1944, famous for his poetry, which interestingly enough was originally written in German, and then translated to English.
His works primarily feature the themes of a nomadic lifestyle, nature, heritage and cultural identity, so if any of these topics interest you, definitely check out his works!
2. Chadraabalyn Lodoidamba
I've only managed to read one of his novels "Тунгалаг тамир" (The Crystal Clear Tamir River), but it's definitely a worthwhile read. Set in the 20th Century, it provides an interesting insight into Mongolian history leading up to the uprising of Mongolia in 1932, with a strong focus on the struggle of the poor against the rich
There's no official English translation (there are German and Russion versions somewhere, but I didn't find them yet), but google translate helped me create a readable version from the original Mongolian.
There's also a movie split into several episodes avaliable on yt but with iffy subtitles, so if you liked the book, you can sort of follow along with the movie.
It's rare for me to hear spoken Mongolian, so watching the movie episodes has been a fascinating experience.
3. Choinom Ryenchi
Once again, I've only read one of this authors works "Buriad", written in 1973 and published in Sümtei Budaryn Chuluu [A Stone from the Steppe with a Monastery] in 1990, but it was enough to interest me.
Buriad refers to an ethnic group in Mongolia, with the poem describing their lifestyle and history. I don't know if what I've read is the entire work, as I found it in a research paper, feauturing said poem with the translation, but it was still quite beautiful.
The style is very lyrical, almost like a song or even a chant at times, and very captivating. A must-read.
4. Mend-Ooyo Gombojav
He has written quite a lot of novels, with many of them luckily translated into English.
His "The Holy One" is a great work of historical fiction, about a 19th century poet and teacher of Buddhism, whose memory and works were later persecuted by the governments fight against intellectuals and free-thinkers, all whilst his works protector attempted to save his works.
Unfortunately I've only read excerpts and bits and pieces, which is pretty frustrating because it seems so good? The style is unusual for me, but it's pretty great either way.
I've read the peom "The Way of the World", which has a rather nostalgic vibe, remembering the past warriors and their heroic deeds but also suggesting that only the stories of their victories will remain. Short but "sweet".
5. Oyungerel Tsedevdamba
I only know her "The Green-eyed Lama", co-written by her and her husband Jeffrey Lester Falt, but the plot description is enough to have me hooked. A love triangle, love and faith amidst war and rebellion... Here's me hoping that it won't be a tear-jerker, because sad endings are not my favorite genre.
Here's a link to a video about Oyungerel's and Jeffrey's writing and research process and how they wrote the novel. It's actually based on a true real-life story, so I guess I'll see how reading this novels turn out. History isn't exactly known for it's happy endings, so we shall see.
6. Combo: Mongolian Short Stories
This one is a compilation of short stories by various Mongolian authors rather than just one author, but it'll have to do because Number 6 exhausts all my knowledge of Mongolian literature.
Edited and compiled by Henry G. Schwarz, each story is about 4-15 pages long with different themes, ranging from daily life in rural Mongolia to critiques of the political situation at the time, the style is a tad over the place, as each author has their own distinct style. Nonetheless, this book gives interesting insights into what life was like in Mongolia at the time, and whether our notions and initial ideas about Mongolia reflect the literary depictions.
Here's my list so far, but chances are I'll update it soon, so watch out for any new updates!
I'll happily share any links and digital copies of these works that I have, just message me please!

The Agony of Waiting for a Ceasefire That Never Comes
When the war in Gaza started, my family fled to the Jabalia refugee camp. Then Israel started bombing the camp.
By Mosab Abu Toha November 6, 2023
"Now I sit in my temporary house in the Jabalia camp, waiting for a ceasefire. I feel like I am in a cage. I’m being killed every day with my people. The only two things I can do are panic and breathe. There is no hope here."

CASSIE: Look, I don't mean to be a pain. You seem really nice, and I know you're just trying to help. But I'm wasting your time. BUFFY: No you're not. This is why I'm here. Cassie, please tell me, why do you think you're gonna die? CASSIE: I don't think it, I know it. I just know. BUFFY: What do you mean, you know? A-are you saying that someone's going to hurt you? Has someone threatened you? CASSIE: No. (beat) No, I just know that next Friday I'm gonna die. Some things I just know. I don't know how, I just do. (beat) Like I know there will be coins- BUFFY: Coins? CASSIE: Mm-hmm. Lots of coins. Weird ones. And I know that you'll go someplace dark underground. I-I don't know.

12 Sad Poems About Love You May Not Know
Tumblr media
Love, in all its forms, can be a source of profound joy and deep sorrow. While we are often familiar with the celebrated works of poets like Shakespeare, Keats, or Emily Dickinson, there are numerous lesser-known poems that encapsulate the melancholic side of love. These poems delve into heartbreak, lost love, unrequited affection, and the inevitability of separation, offering a unique and poignant exploration of love’s darker facets. In this article, we will explore 12 sad poems about love that may not be as well-known but are equally deserving of attention. Each poem will be accompanied by an analysis that aims to uncover the emotional weight carried by the poet’s words.
1. “The End of the Affair” by Graham Greene
“We loved each other, but this was not love.
It was the shadow of love, a mixture of tenderness
and torment that only the very poor in spirit can understand.”
In this excerpt from Graham Greene’s novel “The End of the Affair,” the speaker reflects on the fragile nature of his relationship. The sadness here lies not in an abrupt end, but in the lingering presence of something once full of life now hollowed out. Greene’s prose explores the emotional complexity of love that is consumed by guilt and remorse, suggesting that even the most passionate affairs can leave only shadows behind. This sadness is rooted in the awareness of having once loved but now existing in a space where love has become something unrecognizable.
2. “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe
“Take thy beak from out my heart,
and take thy form from off my door!”
Poe’s “The Raven” is not just a poem of supernatural visitation but a meditation on grief, loss, and the haunting persistence of unrequited love. The speaker, mourning the death of his beloved Lenore, is unable to escape the haunting presence of the raven, symbolizing both his sorrow and the permanence of loss. Poe uses the raven as a metaphor for the painful reminder of love that can never return, emphasizing the destructive nature of despair and the impossibility of moving on.
3. “The Waste Land” by T.S. Eliot
“I will show you fear in a handful of dust.”
T.S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land” is often hailed as a modernist masterpiece, and within its fragmented verses, the theme of love is deeply intertwined with decay and disillusionment. Eliot explores the dissolution of relationships, where love is no longer a vibrant force but a forgotten relic, lost in the barrenness of the modern world. The despair found in these lines speaks to the desolate nature of a love that has withered away, unable to withstand the harsh realities of time, change, and emotional fragmentation.
4. “When You Are Old” by W.B. Yeats
“But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
and loved the sorrows of your changing face.”
In “When You Are Old,” Yeats addresses his unrequited love for the woman he adored, reminding her of the depth of his feelings. The speaker imagines his love as a constant, enduring force, contrasted against the fading beauty of the woman as she ages. There is sadness in the acknowledgment that love, though eternal, often goes unnoticed or unreciprocated. The passage reflects the melancholic realization that true love may not always be returned or appreciated in the way it deserves.
5. “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T.S. Eliot
“Do I dare disturb the universe?
In a minute there is time
For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse.”
T.S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” portrays the internal anguish of a man paralyzed by self-doubt and fear of rejection. Prufrock, a persona overwhelmed by uncertainty, cannot bring himself to express his feelings of love, caught in a cycle of hesitation and regret. His inability to act results in a profound sadness, as he remains stuck in a world of “half-desires,” where love is only an idea and never a reality. Eliot brilliantly captures the emotional isolation that can accompany unspoken or unrealized love.
6. “The Ballad of Reading Gaol” by Oscar Wilde
“Yet each man kills the thing he loves,
By each let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word.”
Oscar Wilde’s “The Ballad of Reading Gaol” is a tragic poem about the consequences of unrequited love and the guilt that accompanies betrayal. The poem recounts the life of a prisoner, reflecting on the ways in which love, in its various forms, can lead to harm. Wilde’s powerful lines emphasize how love, when misunderstood or corrupted, can become destructive. The sadness in the poem is rooted in the idea that love, though meant to uplift, can also lead to self-destruction, either through rejection, betrayal, or guilt.
7. “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe
“But we loved with a love that was more than love—
I and my Annabel Lee.”
Edgar Allan Poe’s “Annabel Lee” is a haunting poem about the death of the poet’s beloved and the eternal nature of their love. The poem is filled with sorrow as the speaker reminisces about a love that transcended both time and circumstance, only to be cruelly interrupted by death. Poe’s repetition of “more than love” emphasizes the intensity of the bond shared between the two, while the sadness stems from the inability to hold onto love once it has been lost. In the end, the poem suggests that love, even in its most beautiful form, cannot escape the inevitable separation that death brings.
8. “A Birthday” by Christina Rossetti
“My heart is like a singing bird
Whose nest is in a water’d shoot;
My heart is like an apple tree
Whose boughs are bent with thickest fruit.”
Christina Rossetti’s “A Birthday” presents a celebratory tone, but beneath the surface, there is an undercurrent of sadness. The speaker’s joy comes from the idea of rebirth and renewal, but there is also an awareness that love, no matter how fulfilling, is ephemeral. The beauty of the poem lies in the juxtaposition of the joy of love with the inevitable passage of time. Rossetti, a poet often associated with themes of longing and loss, suggests that even moments of bliss in love are bittersweet because they are fleeting.
9. “I Loved You” by Alexander Pushkin
“I loved you: and perhaps I may love you
In the same way, but let it not trouble you.”
In this simple but profound Russian poem, Alexander Pushkin expresses a form of unrequited love that has transformed into quiet resignation. The speaker conveys the sadness of loving someone without expectation of reciprocation, choosing instead to withdraw without bitterness. The sadness here is subtle, rooted in the knowledge that love, once expressed, cannot be undone or forgotten. The speaker, while still harboring affection, has come to terms with the fact that this love can no longer affect the object of his desire.
10. “A Lover’s Complaint” by William Shakespeare
“O, let me be a little sad;
For I have lost my love.”
Shakespeare’s “A Lover’s Complaint” is a narrative poem that depicts the sorrow of a betrayed lover. The poem’s speaker reflects on the unfaithfulness of his lover and the sadness that arises from being deceived. The emotion of heartbreak is vividly captured in the language of betrayal and loss. Shakespeare’s exploration of love’s darker side speaks to the fragility of human connections and the emotional devastation that can result from infidelity.
11. “The Broken Heart” by John Donne
“He is stark mad, who cannot see
That love is in the serenity
Of the soul, which is one of the worst of all.”
John Donne’s “The Broken Heart” delves into the overwhelming emotional torment of a heart broken by love. The speaker contemplates the paradoxical nature of love, where its capacity to bring joy is always shadowed by its potential for pain. Donne’s poignant exploration of the heartbreak caused by lost or unrequited love reveals a complex understanding of human emotions—where love is both a blessing and a curse, capable of both elevating and destroying.
12. “Love After Love” by Derek Walcott
“The time will come
When, with elation, you will greet yourself arriving
At your own door, in your own mirror.”
Analysis: Derek Walcott’s “Love After Love” is not a conventional sad poem about love, but its underlying sadness comes from the theme of self-love following the loss of another. The poem speaks to the healing process after a difficult breakup, where one must learn to reconnect with oneself. The sadness in the poem is reflective and bittersweet, as it captures the pain of separation, yet offers hope for self-rediscovery and inner peace. Walcott’s imagery evokes the deep emotional scars left by love, but also the potential for growth after loss.
Conclusion
These 12 lesser-known poems about love offer a unique perspective on the sadness and heartache that often accompany love’s fleeting nature. Whether it’s the quiet resignation of a love unreturned, the haunting presence of a lost love, or the aftermath of betrayal, these poems provide an emotional depth that resonates with anyone who has experienced the complexities of love. Each poet, through their own lens, reminds us that love, in all its beauty and pain, is an integral part of the human experience.
While not as widely recognized as some of the great works of literature, these poems are essential in understanding the full spectrum of love’s impact. Through their words, we find solace in knowing that we are not alone in our experiences of love, loss, and heartache.

10 Classic Love Poems and What They Teach About Romance
Tumblr media
Love has been a central theme in literature for centuries, and poets have used their craft to capture the many facets of romantic love. Classic love poems not only evoke strong emotions but also offer timeless insights into the nature of love and romance. Here, we explore 10 classic love poems and the lessons they teach about romance.
Express your feelings with beautiful love poems from Cupid Haven. Whether you’re celebrating romance or looking for the perfect words to share, our collection of heartfelt poetry will inspire and captivate your partner.
1. "Sonnet 18" by William Shakespeare
Excerpt: "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate."
Lesson in Romance: Shakespeare’s "Sonnet 18" is one of the most famous love poems in history, comparing the speaker’s lover to a summer’s day. While the summer can be fleeting, the poem suggests that true love is eternal and immune to the ravages of time. This poem teaches that love, at its core, is timeless, and that the depth of affection for a partner is not subject to the passing of seasons or years.
2. "I Carry Your Heart With Me" by E.E. Cummings
Excerpt: "I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart) I am never without it."
Lesson in Romance: In this beautifully simple and heartfelt poem, E.E. Cummings expresses how deeply intertwined love is with identity. He carries the heart of his lover wherever he goes, signifying that true love becomes an integral part of one’s being. The lesson here is that love is not just an emotion, but a constant presence, even when physically apart. It’s about emotional intimacy and connection that persists beyond the surface.
3. "How Do I Love Thee?" by Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Excerpt: "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace."
Lesson in Romance: This poem is a beautiful expression of the many ways love can manifest. Browning counts the ways she loves her partner, from physical attraction to spiritual depth. The lesson here is that love is multifaceted and encompasses many dimensions—emotional, physical, and intellectual—and that each of these aspects strengthens the bond.
4. "The Good-Morrow" by John Donne
Excerpt: "For love, all love of other sights controls, And makes one little room an everywhere."
Lesson in Romance: Donne’s poem is about the awakening that occurs when two lovers discover their connection to each other. He suggests that love transforms ordinary experiences into extraordinary ones, turning even the smallest moments into something special. This poem teaches that love has the power to elevate the mundane, making every moment more meaningful.
5. "Love's Philosophy" by Percy Bysshe Shelley
Excerpt: "The fountains mingle with the river And the rivers with the ocean, The winds of heaven mix forever With a sweet emotion."
Lesson in Romance: Shelley’s "Love’s Philosophy" uses natural imagery to explain how love is a natural force that binds people together, just as elements of nature flow together in harmony. The lesson here is that love, like nature, is meant to unite and bring balance to our lives. Love is not forced or artificial—it’s an intrinsic part of the world around us.
6. "When You Are Old" by William Butler Yeats
Excerpt: "When you are old and grey and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep."
Lesson in Romance: Yeats’ poem reflects on the love that endures through the passage of time. It imagines a future where physical beauty fades, but the depth of love and affection remains.
