THEN THERE IS A PART WHERE ALAN WAKE IS IN A MENTAL HOSPITAL AND IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE WHOLE STORY IS INITIATED BECAUSE ALAN WAKE'S WIFE DROWN AND HE CAN'T ACCEPT THE SITUATION, SO HE BEGINS WRITING STORIES AS AN AUTHOR THAT COME TRUE IN HOPES OF RESOLVING THE SITUATION, MAINLY THE INTERNAL PROBLEMS HE IS HAVING. COULD THE CHARACTER OF THOMAS ZANE HAVE CREATED ALAN WAKE AS A CHARACTER IN HIS OWN PSYCHE IN AN ATTEMPT TO HELP HIM DEAL WITH HIS WIFE'S MYSTERIOUS DROWNING DEATH?

INSIDE THE LAKE IS WHAT IS CALLED THE DARK PLACE, WHICH IN ALAN WAKE 2 IS A HORROR STORY SETTING. THE DARK PRESENCE IS TRYING TO ESCAPE ITS PRISON OF THE LAKE AND POTENTIALLY INFECT THE ENTIRE WORLD OUTSIDE OF ITS ISOLATED DIMENSION. ANY OF THE CHARACTERS THAT ARE FULLY OVERCOME BY THE DARK PRESENCE IN THE DARK PLACE ARE CALLED THE TAKEN, AND BECOME A MONSTROUS VERSION OF THEMSELVES.

I NEED TO WARN YOU FROM HERE THAT THERE WILL BE SOME SPOILERS FOR THE STORY AND ENDING OF THE GAME, BUT THEY ARE NECESSARY FOR THE OCCULT ANALYSIS I AM PROVIDING.

ALAN WAKE REALIZES THAT HE AND HIS ALTERED EGO SCRATCH (WHICH I TAKE TO MEAN NO NAME AND NO FACE BECAUSE IT'S BEEN SCRATCHED OUT) ARE INDEED THE SAME PERSON WHEN HE COMES IN AND SHOOTS HIMSELF AS HE IS WRITING PART OF THE STORY, AND THEN REALIZES HE REMEMBERS THINGS FROM THE POINT OF VIEW NOT OF THE SHOOTER, BUT OF WHEN HE WAS SITTING THERE WRITING THE STORY AND THE SCRATCH VERSION OF HIMSELF CAME IN AND SHOT HIM. HE COMES TO THE CONCLUSION THAT HE HAS BEEN IN SOME SORT OF ETERNAL LOOP OF DARKNESS IN THE DARK PLACE AND THIS IS DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS ALTERED EGO MR HYDE PERSONALITY SCRATCH.

THE QUESTION WE NEED TO ASK HERE IS WHAT IS THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIMSELF AND HIS ALTERED EGO SCRATCH FILLED WITH THE DARK PRESENCE OF THE DARK PLACE? SCRATCH SEEMS TO BE A VERSION OF ALAN WAKE CREATED BECAUSE SOMETHING FUNDAMENTAL INSIDE OF HIM HAS GONE MISSING CAUSING ALAN WAKE TO DESCEND INTO THE DARK PLACE AND GO AROUND IN A LOOP (I'D LIKE TO REFERENCE HERE THE TIME OF FORGETTING BETWEEN LIFETIMES IF YOU THINK OF REINCARNATION THAT HAPPENS FOR MOST ONCE THEY CROSS OVER AND THEN COME BACK FOR ANOTHER LIFE). THE FIRST ENDING HAS HIM DISCOVER THE LOOP IS NOT A LOOP, BUT IT IS A SPIRAL WHERE HE MAKES GRADUAL IMPROVEMENTS EACH TIME.
