(podłaźniczka is coniferous tree branches or just the top of a tree hanged under the ceiling instead of having a full christmas tree stood in your house)

Polazník, podľažnik, podłaźniczka.
Slavs will thus name a special person or the animal that twill be the first one to enter the house after the Winter Solstice/Christmas. However, among the West Slavs it acquired additional meaning. It will be the name for the branch of the coniferous tree decorated with fruits, barriers, candy and straw ornaments. Hanged usually above the table. I know it’s a little bit too late to publish it now, but I just found these wonderful pictures of Christmas decorations posted by Gminny Ośrodek Kultury w Podegrodziu.
They are attached to a podłaźniczka - which is a decoration predating the Chritsmas Trees in Poland, made of either tied branches or a top of a fir or spruce tree. It hangs down from a ceiling, and used to be tied around construction beams in old cottages. Podłaźniczki are connected to pre-Christian Slavic feast of Szczodre Gody celebrated around the winter solstice.
Interesting type of adornment are so-called “światy” (worlds) - 3D forms, most often in globular shape, made of colorful thin opłatki (wafers). It was believed that the “światy” are bringing happiness and prosperity to the household. Some ethnographic records link these decorations to old worship of Slavic gods, when they were supposed to symbolize either multifaced Slavic gods or all deities altogether. These decorations are very fragile, the wafers could easily break or brittle during preparations, and require a lot of patience. Some people say that the “światy” are meant to remind us how fragile the real world is.

Examples of a podłaźniczka, one of the the oldest types of Christmas decorations in Poland predating the Christmas Trees. It’s prepared out of tied branches or a treetop of a fir, spruce or pine tree, and hangs down from the ceiling, usually above the dining table. It used to be the main element of decoration before the modern Christmas Trees became popular. Traditional adornments tied around its branches were: ornaments made of straw and paper, nuts and fruits (most commonly apples symbolizing good health), later also gingerbread cookies, crocheted ornaments or small globular forms made of thin wafers called "światy" (worlds). In some regions of Poland podłaźniczka was called "boże drzewko" (God's tree or divine tree).
