Modi earned his PM stint; no need to over-publicise surgical strikes: Pranab memoir

NEW DELHI: India needs to tackle Pakistan through “deft handling” rather than “romanticising its political approach” and the country gained little by “over-talking” the surgical strikes of 2016, the late Pranab Mukherjee has written in his memoirs that also recall his “very cordial ties” with PM Narendra Modi who he said earned his prime ministership by leading BJP to a historic win. “India must pursue its Pakistan-related policies with utmost care and deft handling, and not through romanticising its political approach. Surgical strikes conducted by Indian forces across the border have been normal military operations in response to Pakistan’s continued aggression. But there is really no need to over-publicise them — something that has been done ever since the Indian military conducted two strikes inside Pakistani territory since 2016. We gained nothing by overtalking on these operations,” Mukherjee wrote. The former President said Modi had earned the prime ministership and referred to his predecessor Manmohan Singh as “essentially an economist” named as PM by Sonia Gandhi. “Modi, on the other hand, became PM through popular choice after leading BJP to a historic victory in 2014. He is a politician to the core and had been named BJP’s prime ministerial candidate as the party went into campaign mode. He was then Gujarat’s CM and had built an image that seemed to click with the masses. He has earned and achieved the prime ministership,” he said. Offering a ring side view of politics and political leaders, Mukherjee said he had come to expect the unexpected from Modi. “It was evident that one could expect the unexpected from Modi, because he had come with no ideological foreign policy baggage. He was to continue with these surprises: he made a sudden and unscheduled stop at Lahore in December 2015 to greet his then Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif on the latter’s birthday; and he initiated an annual informal summit with the Chinese president — one was held at Wuhan in China in 2018 and the other, more recently, at Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu in 2019. I personally feel that PM Modi’s stopover in Lahore was unnecessary and uncalled for, given the conditions that prevailed in India-Pakistan relations,” he said. Mukherjee said every PM had a style of functioning. Lal Bahadur Shastri, he said, took positions that were very different from that of Nehru, despite being from the same party. Nehru, Mukherjee said, dealt with Nepal very diplomatically, and “rejected” an offer to be made an Indian province. “After the Rana rule was replaced by the monarchy in Nepal, he wished for democracy to take root. Interestingly, Nepal’s king, Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah, had suggested to Nehru that Nepal be made a province of India. But Nehru rejected the offer on the ground that Nepal was an independent nation and must remain so,” Mukherjee said, noting that Indira Gandhi would have reacted differently. Mukherjee completed his memoir ‘The Presidential Years, 2012-2017’ before his death last year. The book, published by Rupa Publications, was released on Tuesday. “BJP emerged with a simple majority on its own in the Lok Sabha for the first time and was thus able to form the government, though it still did so by co-opting its allies. Only Piyush Goyal… was confident that BJP would get no less than 265 seats, and that the number could go up to 280. I didn’t and still don’t know the reasons for his optimism,” he wrote. Mukherjee acknowledged that Modi maintained the constitutional tradition of keeping the President informed and seeking his advice. “I have had very cordial relations with PM Modi during my tenure. However, I did not hesitate to give my advice on matters of policy during our meetings. There were several occasions when he echoed concerns that I had voiced. I believe he has managed to grasp the nuances of foreign policy quickly,” he wrote.

After the red carpet welcome at eth Ahmedabad airport, the US President andPrime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a 22-km-long roadshow from the Ahmedabad International Airport. Trump, who is on a two-day India visit, landed at the Airport at 11.37 am. After the roadshow, the two leaders will address a gathering at the Namaste Trump event at the Motera cricket stadium this afternoon. Modi, who reached Ahmedabad over an hour before Trump landed here, received Trump and his wife Melania upon their arrival.

Trump and Modi began their roadshow from the airport. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has left no stone unturned to make the roadshow a memorable experience for the dignitaries as well as the people. Artistes and performers from many states were allotted a stage on the entire route to perform in their traditional attire. Around 50 stages were erected on the route, starting from the airport till Motera stadium via Indira bridge.

Authorities said over one lakh people are expected to line up along the route of the roadshow, which has been named as ‘India Road Show’ by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. During the roadshow, both the leaders are scheduled to visit Sabarmati Ashram, where Mahatma Gandhi spent 13 years during India’s freedom struggle. After the roadshow, both the leaders will reach the newly-built cricket stadium in Motera to address a gathering of over one lakh people at the Namaste Trump event.

Chopra opted for a floral print and lace dress with bell sleeves from Australian designer Zimmerman to meet with press, as she showed in her Instagram Story. Later, she sat down with Modi, who just so happened to be in Germany too — and didn’t put on a dress that covered her legs for the meeting.

But it was not the repeating outfits that caused a stir in social media. It was her legs.

“Priyanka you were sitting with the Prime Minister of our country. You should have at least had the basic sense of covering your legs,” wrote one of the 2,700-plus Facebook commenters on her picture. Wrote another, “At least show some respect and courtesy in front of our Prime minister..priyanka u r disgusting.”

However, she has received overwhelming support for her choice as well, including on Twitter and Instagram, where the discussion of her outfit choice was blowing up.

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was roasted on social media by millions of Indians for his monthly ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio address where he disregarded students’ crisis and spoke on dogs and toys.

The video of the address when released on Monday the official YouTube channel of the ruling political party, Bharatiya Janata Party, collected over 950,000 dislikes against 245,000 likes.

The users, mostly university students vented about the examinations that were supposed to be postponed amid coronavirus but their apex court intervened and upheld the circular by universities announcing to promote students without exams.

Is it Safe to Travel amid Coronavirus Epidemic ?

One of the major downsides of keeping up with the latest news reports on Coronavirus is the dilemma that lurks in one’s mind- is it safe to travel amid the epidemic? Especially when you have an important business meeting to attend to overseas.  

Since late December 2019, Coronavirus has managed to spread over 79 countries and claimed more than 3000 lives. Rate of infection has crossed over 1 lakh people and still counting. These are unfortunate times to live in. We can not keep on blaming the Wuhan government forever for not implementing timely actions to contain the virus. The best we can do in the present circumstances is to protect ourselves by adopting the best preventive measures.

Impact on international travel industry

Needless to say, travelling is at the very most bottom of the to-do list these days. News reports from all over the world have confirmed cases of Coronavirus from various countries. It is evident now that the virus is not limited to the Asian countries and has spread around the world. It is obvious that travelling is one of its mode of transmission. This has affected the international travel industry the most. It has become quite common for people to frantically cancel on their business trips or overseas vacations. Major airlines have taken quite a fall in terms of declining travelling frequency in the past few months. 

Not only the affected countries, but the neighbouring regions are also advising people to stay at home and avoid any public gatherings. This has resulted in the cancellation of many national and social events all across the globe including India. Holi celebrations have also taken quite a hit. Noteworthily, nation’s PM Narendra Modi has himself decided to refrain from participating in the upcoming festival.

Is COVID-19 airborne? 

The novel Coronavirus that has been named SARS-CoV-2 is found to be Zoonotic. Which means their mode of transmission is between animal to animal. More research is required to unfold how exactly the virus was originated but most speculations are directed towards bats to be the origin and pangolins as the intermediate hosts which ultimately got transmitted to humans.

How does it spread? 

Although the virus which causes COVID-19 in humans is Zoonotic, its further transmission between humans is the matter of greater concern. It is transmitted via airborne respiratory droplets of an infected individual. In simpler terms, through coughing, sneezing or by coming in contact with a surface where the droplets may have accumulated. There is very limited evidence for claims stating the virus can spread through contaminated faecal matter. Until the reports go higher in its support, this claim has no danger signals yet. Hence, we could say that SARS-CoV-2 is airborne, although the supporting cases are not that common. 

Speaking in terms of being completely airborne, Coronavirus do not seem to have the virulence capacity of more potent viruses such as Measles. Which means the chances of getting the infection from an infected space or surface is less likely. Nevertheless, safe hygiene practices should be implemented on a daily basis to minimize even the 0.00001% chances of infection.    

What precautionary measures can be taken? 

The best way to handle a viral disease is to protect yourself before it makes its strike. You can prevent catching COVID-19 by employing simple hygiene practice in your daily routine.

Washing your hands thoroughly with a strong cleanser every time before eating, after you come from the bathroom and when you blow your nose, sneeze or cough.

When to call your doctor? 

If you have not been to the high-risk countries such as China, Iran, Japan in the past few months and are down with the symptoms of flu, it is most likely that you have not caught CoV-2. In this case, you should follow the usual protocol of taking a healthy diet and taking complete rest until you recover.

If you are sick and have visited those countries or have come in contact with someone who’ve been there and is now sick with symptoms of coughing, fever, difficulty in breathing, you should contact your doctor or local emergency centre. They will then help you to get the required tests and treatment alternatives to be taken.   

Should you proceed with your travelling plans? 

Avoiding disease-prone areas or travelling only to safe zones are the requisites for remaining infection-free. But you cannot deny the fact that the vessel that will be carrying over 100 people needs to be infection-free too. Yes, chances are you might be travelling with a person who has contracted the virus but is showing no visible symptoms yet. In such cases, the situation becomes scarier in the absence of confirmation.

What to do then?

Health authorities all across the globe have issued certain measures to be taken in public places where physical contact is unavoidable. Moreover, travel industries are taking up serious sanitation measures for decontamination of their modes of transportation. It is highly unlikely for CoV-2 to sustain in a well-decontaminated environment, hence it should be enough to put your worries to rest.

The general advice is to maintain a minimum distance of 6 feet between you and the infected. But it is not the best resort in public transports where everyone is bound to limited space. Sanitizing your area is the best viable option.

Don’t touch your face with your bare hands, especially eyes, nose and mouth. If possible keep your face covered, it will prevent any foreign substance entry via your hands. Gloves are not a feasible option as the main objective is to protect your face. An infected glove serves the same purpose as that of a bare hand. However, if you are taking care of an infected person, gloves and masks both should be part of your attire.

Avoid touching surfaces that are more exposed. If you must, say support yourself on the hanging strap of a train, disinfect your hand immediately with a 95% alcohol-based sanitizer and wash your hands properly afterwards with an efficient cleanser.

Keep your mouth covered with a mask around those who seem to show symptoms of infection.

If you plan to visit China out of all places, pay attention to all the preventive measures and cooperate with the local airport’s security protocol, which includes the mandatory screening tests for CoV-2. Since you already know the origin theories of the virus, it will be wise to stay away from live animal markets.

Wear your mask only if you are infected! 

Public health experts do not recommend wearing masks for healthy people. As there is a global panic that is haunting people all across, it is natural that a shortage of protective gears will also occur. People who have not contracted the virus need not wearing it all the time or out in public. Medical practitioners, caregivers and infected people are in the dire need of wearing them. Over precautionary actions might lead to a shortage of supplies for the needful, as it is happening all over the world. Hence, have a hold of your senses and spread the word. 

In conclusion, your travelling choices will affect your susceptibility to the virus only when you negate the precautionary measures mentioned above. Until and unless you consider and adopt the necessary course of action, travelling anywhere should be safe. Just not the Eastern-Asian regions for a while, or maybe longer!

Being Human

Thousands of British Citizens are stuck in India because flights have been cancelled across the world. This virus has brought the entire planet to its knees and unfortunately, people have been left without their governments’ assistance everywhere. 

I let people know on a group in India that if anyone is in need of a place to stay ahead of their flights from Goa, they are welcome to come here and instead of payment for the rooms, we’re taking donations to feed those who aren’t getting enough food or don’t have money. 

The hotel is currently, officially, closed but because some of my fellow Brits are stranded and often scared and confused, I’m taking people in so long as they’re certified corona-free. This is a huge risk and one I’m not overly confident in taking but it’s necessary and that’s more important than rules right now. Being kind to people is a necessity for me. To see people stuck with no food, safety and with a language barrier that stops communication, is a sin. 

I have seen a lot of racism however. I’ve read it and have witnessed it first hand. I get that people are frustrated but India did not purposely prevent you from returning home. Corona had no agenda or timetable. Lockdown was the only choice and despite having left millions of people stranded in states other than their home states, the PM took this decision knowing full well that if he didn’t, this would be a total catastrophe for the nation and he’d end up with half his population dead. The dirt, heat, sanitation issues are not the cause of people being stuck in India. But reading and hearing some comments, blatantly racist at times, it’s just sad that we’ve gone back to a time where racism was more prominent. It seems that people still harbour such thoughts deep down and because they’re now annoyed and angry, they feel that they can open that up again. 

One example, if you want it - “hey Modi. In my country we don’t sh*t and pi*s on the streets and I just want to get back to my own country where I know it’s clean and safe. I’m a prisoner in your disgusting country...” 

FB need to do something about comments like these but that’s a blog for another day...

FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T READ THE WRITING ON THE WALL

My senior from UPSS, Lucknow in a write-up on fb had penned down his thoughts on the charismatic and inspiring leadership qualities of our PM Narendra Modi, which I had the fortune to go through.

Since last few days, I was wondering, why a few Muslims continue to be intransigent and continue to not only nurture Shaheenbagh but have been trying to even replicate it at few other locations as well. Don't they realise that whatever little fizz Shaheenbagh Bagh had has hopelessly flattened, it has indeed become stale , tasteless and annoying. Those who started it are not able to find excuse for its dignified closure, from the very first day, it in any case lacked reason or excuse to be there anyway. All movements, let alone Shaheenbagh fail to conceal the source of their funds which as a matter of rule come from organisations based abroad and inimical to India as also from some homegrown organizations; political or otherwise but also inimical to India.

This Sunday (23 Mar) clapping and drum beating is much realistic proof of on ground real time display of approval rating of the most dynamic PM in Narendra Modi India has ever had. Like it or leave it, it's your choice.

I was only too sure that more these propped up sectarian footsoldiers continue their foolhardy activities, the resolve of the silent majority in favour of Narendra Modi will overwhelming surpass all popularity estimates. And it has, the numbers which came out to clap are a proof, live , for all to see, no bar charts or pie diagrams and editorial analytics or analysis required.

Isn't it time to see the writing on the wall and concede that India had changed. Nehru has been forgotten, so has been Indira and for the good. If at all they are remembered, it's only for wrong reasons. To make the matters still hopeless, they have a lady in decay mode and an old youngster who besides lacking the basics seems to be perpetually under influence of some kind of intoxicant.

As per Mani Shankar Aiyar's belief, Congress is that PARAS PATTHAR which alone has the capability of transforming everything which comes in their contact, into Gold. If it was not for IE, an anti India and bitter anti Modi paper, there would have been no takers of writings of Mani Shankar Aiyar. But.....

Today's IE editorial page contained a write-up from Mani Shankar Aiyar wherein he has gone on to make it known to the reader that Sindias had helped the Brits. It was Rani of Jhansi who defended Gwalior and was martyred while doing so. Younger Sindia has been with Congress for 18 long years and his father Madhav Rao for even longer period of time. Just that only when one is with Congress, only then a certificate of patriotism can be/ is issued is what Congress believes in. Congress suffers from selective amnesia. What about Mani Shankar Aiyar's patriotism who was shown on TV requesting Pakistani politicians to remove Narendra Modi, a democratically elected PM of the world's largest democracy. Was this displays of patriotism, Congress style of patriotism, may be.

Isn't this the same lose tongue who had prophesied that Modi can never become the PM and in the same breath had offered to provide space for setting up tea stall where Modi Ji could sell tea. Aiyar knows that he is no good and there are no takers of what he prophesies. Congress paty itself is on ventilator support, there is marked absence of effective and professional leadership, dynasts are useless whether it is Rahul or his mother Sonia.

PM Modi is no more a challenge, which he may have been prior to 2014. Now he is a reality, a phenomenon India was in dire need of and a very very tall personality. The only option is to be with him, and if not, then be doomed for ever.

3:20 pm: Pornhub is offering free premium memberships to some countries on lockdown

Adult entertainment website Pornhub has just given people stuck in coronavirus lockdown one more way to pass their time. 

The company this week announced free premium membership to viewers in France and Spain, after doing the same for Italy a week prior. 

“In light of expanding quarantines, we are extending Free Pornhub Premium for the month to our friends in France! Pornhub will also donate this month’s sales from Modelhub… Courage France!” the company posted on its Twitter account Tuesday.

3:05 pm: There will be a ‘massive’ shuffling of supply chains globally

Global supply chains are set for a major reshuffle as the coronavirus pandemic exposes the vulnerability of countries and companies that rely heavily on a limited number of trading partners.

The new coronavirus disease, formally known as COVID-19, was first reported in the central Chinese city of Wuhan. Since late-January, a wave of city-wide closures and quarantines in China have shut down factories in the world’s second-largest economy, disrupting supply chains globally.

“One of the things that really became apparent with COVID-19 is the rapid change that has occurred in terms of the critical mass of value chains that have built up in China from 2003 when we had SARS to 2019,” said Alex Capri, a visiting senior fellow at the National University of Singapore’s business school.

SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, was another kind of coronavirus that broke out in 2002 and 2003 that wrought damage to China’s economy. — Huileng Tan

2:45 pm: Travelers to China try to navigate a shifting variety of quarantine policies

Many foreigners trying to get back to jobs in China face a slew of fresh quarantine policies designed to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

Whether it’s two weeks of isolation at a designated hotel, straight off the airplane, or 14 days at home, local Chinese authorities differ on how to handle the rapidly developing situation. Although some travelers are quick to note how courteous the staff are, abrupt policy changes can still lead to confusion in practice and added costs for foreign businesses.

“Day by day it’s changing, and there’s (a lack of) coordinating,” Carlo D’Andrea, Shanghai-based vice president of the EU Chamber of Commerce in China, said in an interview last week. 

“This is bad for business,” he said, noting executives of member companies are concerned about sending staff back to China. — Evelyn Cheng

1:50 pm: Malaysia to deploy army to enforce restricted movement order

Malaysia will deploy the army starting Sunday to assist the police in enforcing a restricted movement order aimed at keeping people at home to stem the spread of the new coronavirus, reported Reuters.

The country on Wednesday shut its borders to travelers as well as close schools and some businesses. The closure is expected to last until March 31, but Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the shutdown could be extended if the situation doesn’t improve. 

Malaysia has reported 900 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus — the highest number in Southeast Asia — and two deaths as of Thursday, according to the health ministry. Of the confirmed cases, 576 are linked to a gathering of 16,000 Muslim missionaries last month in the outskirts of capital Kuala Lumpur, according to Reuters. — Yen Nee Lee

1:05 pm: Cathay Pacific will cut passenger capacity by 96% in April, May

Hong Kong’s flag carrier Cathay Pacific said it will cut its overall passenger capacity by 96% in April and May as the ongoing coronavirus outbreak has caused more governments to tighten travel restrictions. 

“We need to take difficult but decisive measures as the scale of the challenge facing the global aviation industry is unprecedented,” Ronald Lam, Cathay Pacific’s chief customer and commercial officer, said in a statement.

“We have no choice but to significantly reduce our passenger capacity as travel restrictions are making it increasingly difficult for our customers to travel and demand has dropped drastically,” he added. — Yen Nee Lee

12:45 pm: WHO working to ramp up test kit supply

The World Health Organization is working with coronavirus test kit makers and the private sector to scale up manufacturing and improve the supply chain.

“The supply chains are not able to keep up with the demand,” said Soumya Swaminathan, chief scientist at the WHO. She added that the shortages are not just for the tests but include a range of products from swabs needed to take samples to commonly used lab materials.

Swaminathan said it was encouraging that China reported zero local cases for the second day in a row on Friday, but said it would be cautious to wait 14 days to be sure that local transmission has stopped.

“What we’ve heard is very encouraging, and it gives hope, I think, to the rest of the world that actions taken against this virus can yield results,” she said. However, “what we don’t know is how quickly or whether this virus will actually come back once people start moving around and going back to normal activities.” — Huileng Tan

12:20 pm: Vietnam expands foreign visa ban

Vietnam will temporarily suspend visa-free travel for citizens of Japan, Russia and Belarus starting Saturday, the country’s foreign affairs ministry said in a statement.

The Southeast Asian country had last week week announced that it was suspending visa waivers for nine European countries and South Korea in a bid to curb the spread of the new coronavirus.

Vietnam has reported 85 confirmed cases of COVID-19, reported Reuters, citing the country’s health ministry. — Yen Nee Lee

11:40 am: NASA temporarily shuts two facilities

U.S. space agency NASA said it is temporarily closing two rocket production facilities starting Friday after an employee working at one of the sites tested positive for the new coronavirus.

The two facilities are the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans and Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, NASA’s Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a statement. He added that there’s been a rising number of COVID-19 cases in the local areas where the facilities are located. 

The employee that tested positive was from the team at Stennis, the statement read.

The closure could affect the agency’s plans to send Americans to the moon again by 2024, reported Reuters. — Yen Nee Lee

11:20 am: Brazil bars citizens from some countries from entering

Brazil announced it will bar citizens from some countries affected by the outbreak, from entering its country. These include the European Union, China, Japan, Australia, Malaysia and South Korea, according to a Reuters report. The United States is exempted from the ban.

The number of infections in Brazil crossed 600 on Thursday, more than doubling in two days, the report said. — Weizhen Tan

10:40 am: India’s Modi announces one-day curfew to combat the virus

India Prime Minister Narendra Modi told residents to observe a one-day curfew on March 22, in a video address on Thursday night. He urged people to stay indoors from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m.

“The success of a people’s curfew on 22nd March, and the experience gained from it, will also prepare us for our upcoming challenges,” Modi said, according to an official English translation of his remarks.

India has at least 173 confirmed cases, out of which 19 have been cured and four people have died. Though worries have grown about an epidemic, given how densely populated India is, officials have said there has not been any evidence yet of community transmission. — Saheli Roy Choudhury

10:00 am: California governor issues statewide order to ‘stay at home’

California Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday issued a statewide order for all residents to ‘stay at home’ amid a coronavirus outbreak.

The stay home order is in place till further notice.

All dine-in restaurants, bars and clubs, gyms and fitness studios will be closed, according to the order. Public events and gatherings are also not allowed. Essential services will stay open, however, such as pharmacies, grocery stores, takeout and delivery restaurants, and banks. 

California estimates that more than half of the state — 25.5 million people — will get the new coronavirus over the next eight weeks. — Weizhen Tan

9:35 am: South Korea reports 87 new cases, 3 deaths

South Korea reported 87 new confirmed cases and three more deaths as of Friday morning.

That brings the country’s total to 8,652 cases and 94 deaths, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Daily new infections in the country have generally been on a downward trajectory over the past week.

8:55 am: Los Angeles issues emergency stay home order

Los Angeles issued a “Safer at Home” emergency order, meaning residents must “immediately limit all movement outside of their homes beyond what is absolutely essential,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said.

The order will take effect from 11:59 p.m. PT Thursday until April 19. Garcetti also said workers of “impacted businesses” have an additional 24 hours. — Weizhen Tan

8:21 am: Many of Mexico’s top bankers quarantined after convention attendee tests positive

Many of Mexico’s top banking and finance people have been put in quarantine or told to work from home, after attending a convention attended by hundreds where at least one later tested positive, according to a Reuters report.

Those who attended included Mexico’s president, finance minister and hundreds of senior bankers, the report said.

Banks whose employees attended the conference and were told to work from home after included Citigroup’s Mexican operations Citibanamex and HSBC, according to the report. Cases in Mexico leaped by 27% in the past day to 118. — Weizhen Tan

8:00 am: China reports 39 new cases

China’s National Health Commission reported 39 new confirmed cases and three additional deaths as of Mar. 19. China said all of the new cases were imported, meaning people who traveled from overseas. The NHC said that brings China’s total number of imported cases to 228.

China also said that there were no new cases in Hubei, the epicenter of the country’s outbreak. The country has reported a total of 80,967 confirmed cases and 3,248 deaths, while 71,150 people have been discharged. — Weizhen Tan

7:05 pm: California estimates more than half of the state will get the virus

California estimates that more than half of the state — 25.5 million people — will get the new coronavirus over the next eight weeks, according to a letter sent by Gov. Gavin Newsom to U.S. President Donald Trump.

“In the last 24 hours, we had 126 new COVID-19 cases, a 21 percent increase. In some parts of our state, our case rate is doubling every four days,” Newsom wrote in a letter dated Wednesday. Newsom asked Trump to dispatch the USNS Mercy Hospital Ship to the Port of Los Angeles through Sept. 1 to help with the influx of expected cases.

The state reported nearly 699 confirmed cases as of 9 p.m. ET Wednesday night, according to the California health department. Newsom said the virus is spreading in the community in 23 counties across the state. It is the third hardest-hit state in the U.S., behind Washington state which has 1,376 cases as of 6 p.m. EDT Thursday and New York which has at least 5,000 cases.—Dawn Kopecki

Apple is limiting bulk purchases of iPhones and other products as it faces supply constraints. 

Apple‘s online store began limiting U.S. customers to two units of each iPhone model per person this week. Customers can still buy more than two iPhones in one order, but they would have to be different models — for instance, two iPhone 11s and two iPhone 11 Pros.

The restriction applies to the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Max.

Plots galore in Madhya Pradesh after Scindia leaves Congress and over 20 MLAs ‘quit’ in revolt

New Delhi: The 15-month-old Congress government in Madhya Pradesh headed by Kamal Nath was tottering on the brink on an eventful Holi day after the long-sulking Jyotiraditya Scindia dramatically crossed over to the BJP, and at least 22 (at the last count ) pro-Scindia Congress MLAs alongside “sending their resignations” from the Assembly making it a full-fledged internal revolt.

With a couple of supporting MLAs too openly hobnobbing with BJP leaders by evening, the number game appears to be precariously dwindling below the majority mark for the Congress regime. Yet, there could be some more twists in this see-saw battle before the final act is played out, perhaps with a formal floor test in the Assembly — something the beleaguered Chief Minister appears to be working towards for now rather than throwing in the towel.

Though the CM was working to gamble with a cabinet expansion as a way of wooing some of the rebels, if BJP rallies more defections from among Congress MLAs, the will on the other side for resistance or counter -plotting would crumble. The support from the Modi government at the Centre also works to the tactical advantage for the BJP’s push forcing a regime change.

Whether the Speaker will immediately accept, or take time for scrutiny, the resignations sent by the Congress MLAs – there are precedents like former Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan taking weeks for scrutiny and personal verification before accepting the resignations of YSR Congress MPs) and, whether the CM will opt for a trust vote or face a no-confidence motion from BJP than resigning on his own will give an indication of the game plan.

If the Speaker delays decision on resignations and conducts a floor test with party whips in operation, both the BJP and Congress will engage in mind-games with these 22 MLAs

The effective strength of Madhya Pradesh after the resignations stands reduced to 205 (with two vacancies) and 103 is the new half-way mark. The Congress strength now stands reduced to 92 against the BJP’s 107. Earlier Congress had the outside support of 4 Independents, two of BSP and one SP. With one MLA each of BSP and SP seen at the house of former CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan, the strength of Congress plus remaining allies stands reduced to 97.

A few months ago, two BJP MLAs had indulged in cross-voting for the Congress regime but, it is not clear whether they are still with Congress or ‘returned home’. The CM and his team were also known to have been cultivating some BJP MLAs as their “invisible friends” but whether they will stand by that plot or, will ‘sail with the wind’ remains to be seen.

SCINDIA CROSSES THE RUBICON What tilted the scale dramatically is 49-yr-old Jyotiraditya Scindia finally deciding to snap his 18-year-old ties with the Congress on the birth anniversary of his late father Madhavrao Scindia to take the plunge into BJP. After having held behind-the-scenes negotiations with BJP leaders in Delhi and handing over his supporting MLAs to the ‘safe custody’ of the BJP state government in Karnataka, Scindia came in the open on Tuesday morning to meet PM Modi at the latter’s residence with Home Minister Amit Shah too joining them. Thereafter, his formal induction into the BJP is just a matter of time.

Scindia has been sulking in the Congress for two reasons: for not being appointed the PCC chief and, more recently for not being made the Congress’ first preference, thus more safe, candidate — which is widely expected to be Digvijaya Singh — for the two Rajya Sabha seats the party had been eyeing.

The other camps say with just 20 plus MLAs in the Chambal-Gwalior region, Scindia was asking for more than what the comparatively more influential Nath and Digvijaya were getting. Scindia has been positioning as a close friend of Rahul Gandhi for many years now, something that he leveraged to halt the appointment of a new PCC president of choice of the numerically stronger Nath-Singh axis .

Scindia’s first ever defeat in the recent LS polls made his life — outside Delhi’s power perch –,as one leader put it, “like a fish out of water”. The BJP is expected to offer him a Rajya Sabha berth and a union minister’s post as a reward.

After finalizing the deal, Scindia sent to Sonia Gandhi his resignation which said, “While my aim and purpose remain the same as it has always been from the very beginning, to serve the people of my state and country, I believe I am unable to do this anymore within this party…to reflect and realise the aspirations of my people and my workers I believe it is best that I now look ahead at a fresh start.”

Almost simultaneously AICC expelled Scindia from the Congress for “anti-party activities”.

Soon, Congress leaders lined up to target Scindia just as BJP leaders queued to praise him. A sharp attack on Scindia came from close ally of Kamal Nath — Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot — who tweeted; “Joining hands with BJP in a time of national crisis speaks volumes about a leaders self-indulgent political ambitions. Especially when the BJP is ruining the economy, democratic institutions, social fabric and as well the judiciary. Mr Scindia has betrayed the trust of the people as well as the ideology. Such people proves they can’t thrive without power. Sooner they leave the better”. Many in the Congress think Gehlot’s criticism of Scindia is as much aimed as an indirect forewarning to his deputy and in-house rival Sachin Pilot.

If not Modi, then who?

This is not a propaganda blog. I'm not going to tell you whom to or whom not to vote for. The sole purpose of this blog is to make you more aware of how the democracy functions and what all are the options on table. So worry not, and read on.

I very frequently run into people who ask questions like, "If not modi, then who?" or something like "But Rahul shouldn't get to be the PM, should he?" or something like "aega to modi hi, so why should I waste my vote by giving it to another party?".

When you read all these questions, there's just one thing that comes out of it, that is, lack of awareness on how the democracy functions and more than that, what's the way one needs to think before he/she goes to vote.

Noone makes the effort to spread this awareness. Because media is busy running paid campaigns and political parties, of course are busy campaigning.

But here I try to do it for you. The first thing that most of us get wrong while voting is thinking that we are electing the PM of our country. We just look at the PM face of a party and go vote based on that. Which is wrong.

While the right thing to do is to vote for the local candidate of your constituency. Look closely at who all are contesting from your constituency, then look them up on Google, their past record, their criminal background, have they actually done anything for the people of the constituency.

All this can be found out just by googling the name of each candidate from your constituency. Once you have done this research for all those contesting, next is to choose which candidate is best and most willing to do work. Then go elect that candidate, it doesn't matter the candidate is from which party.

Your job is to choose the best from your area. It's not to make the PM of our country, that'll be decided after the results. The PM isn't directly answerable to you for your daily problems, only your local representative can help. Choose that representative wisely.

I honestly don't understand why doesn't the media spread this kind of awareness during the elections instead of just going la-la all over the elections.

Anyway, now you know it. And you are an educated citizen of this country. Make an educated and well researched choice. Don't just go out and press your favorite symbol. Think before you give your vote.

So now you should have the answer to-

"If not Modi, then who?"

This isn't about modi in the first place, it's about the local representative of your constituency that you choose to elect.

Lastly, do go out and vote! It's one of the few things still in your hands, literally.

India Today- Axis opinion poll: Youth back CM Akhilesh Yadav but BJP has clear edge in UP

The BJP appears poised to bag the crucial battleground state of Uttar Pradesh despite the inconvenience faced by citizens after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's surprise announcement on demonetisation in November.

The latest opinion poll by Axis My India for India Today TV - released on the day the Election Commission announced the schedule of elections in five states- shows the ruling party at the Centre is in pole position to end its 14 year vanvaas in UP.

The survey projects that the BJP will secure a majority by bagging between 206 and 216 seats in the seven-phase Uttar Pradesh elections to be held in February- March. This is about 30 seats more than the number thrown up in the first UP opinion poll done by Axis My India in October.

People support demonetisation

An overwhelming 76 per cent of the respondents supported demonetisation though people are split on whether the common man has been inconvenienced by the move. While 58 per cent reported that they have been facing problems because of the note ban, 42 per cent said they have not faced hassles. The jump in the BJP's vote share in this poll indicates that despite the inconvenience caused, people believe that the PM's move will ultimately benefit the nation. More than half the respondents (51 per cent) say they believe demonetisation will help eliminate black money and fake notes.

Samajwadi Party to emerge as the second largest party

The polls in the state of more than 200 million people will be crucial to Modi's long-term plan for re-election in 2019. The ruling Samajwadi Party in its current avatar is projected to emerge as the second largest party, bagging between 92-97 seats. Despite the infighting, in the past three months the SP's graph seems to have risen while the BSP has slipped from second to third place.

Mayawati fails to go beyond its traditional Dalit vote bank

Mayawati's party is likely to bag 79-85 seats, down from 115-124 predicted by the previous survey. The reason behind the decline seems to be its inability to get incremental voters beyond its traditional Dalit vote bank. In 2007, BSP had won on the back of Brahmins joining the Dalit bandwagon. A decade later, the party's appeal among non-Dalits appears limited.

Prashant Kishor's electoral plans makes no difference for Congress

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's high-voltage campaign and strategist Prashant Kishor's electoral planning seems to have made no difference to the party's fortunes. Its tally is projected to decline to 5-9 seats from 28 in the 2012 elections.

The BJP's projected vote share has gone up to 33 per cent from 31 per cent in the opinion poll done by Axis My India in October. Though both SP and BSP have 26 per cent votes, the state's ruling party is likely to bag more seats because it's vote share is concentrated, unlike the rival whose votes are spread across the state. The BJP's attempts to break into the SP's Yadav vote bank is not making much headway. 72 per cent of the Yadav's polled said they will vote for the undivided SP.

Reason for BSP's falling graph

One of the reasons behind the BSP's falling graph is that the Muslims of UP who were earlier divided between the SP and BSP now seem to be gravitating towards the former. 71 per cent of the Muslims polled in December said they will vote for the SP while in October the party's Muslim support stood at 58 per cent. In the same period, the BSP's support among Muslims has fallen from 21 per cent to 14 per cent.

UP youth support Akhilesh

The SP's support is highest among the youth, thanks to the image Akhilesh has been able to build among the state's youngsters. The BJP is most popular among the 60+ voters of UP where it has 37 per cent support, four per cent more than its overall vote share.

Young Akhilesh Yadav is the top choice to be the state's next CM, with 33 per cent of the respondents backing him for the job. Mayawati comes in second with 25 per cent support. Though Home Minister Rajnath Singh has indicated he's not in the race, he's still the BJP's best bet with 20 per cent respondents backing him.

As has been the case in previous opinion polls, Mayawati has the highest approval ratings when it comes to the question of who's best placed to handle law and order in UP. 48 per cent of the respondents thought that she would do the best job while 28 per cent backed Akhilesh Yadav.

Axis My India opinion poll

The opinion poll has a sample size of 8,480 and was carried out by a team of 35 surveyors from December 12-24. The survey does not factor in the impact of any possible split in the Samajwadi Party nor does it look at the impact of an alliance among the SP, Congress and RLD. In a multi-corner race with small margins, the coming together of "secular forces" can change all current calculations.

Explaining what could change from here on, Pradeep Gupta, the lead pollster for Axis My India, told India Today TV, "As of now, Muslim votes are consolidated behind SP. But if it splits, Muslims will have to rethink their support. Minorities could once again swing towards BSP or pick the Akhilesh and Congress alliance. A Dalit and Muslim alliance can pose a serious challenge for BJP."

Battling demonetisation headwinds, the BJP believes it will do even better than the survey suggests. Party general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, Om Mathur, told India Today TV, "For the last two and a half years, BJP workers have been working on every booth in the state. Our efforts will deliver even better results than what your poll shows. Our own calculation shows we will get more than 300 seats. You can take this in writing from me."

BSP leaders refused to comment on the findings, saying polls always tend to underestimate the party's vote share. Reacting to the poll findings, SP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia told India Today TV, "The current differences in the party will be resolved by dialogue and the party will fight as one united front. We are confident that on the plank of development, Akhilesh Yadav will lead SP to victory again."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi clears the test for most millennials, an exclusive Piplsay Youth survey reveals

About 130 million young adults will get to cast their votes in the next general election.

These first-time voters are part of the growing breed of young Indians which will be crucial in deciding the political fortunes of most parties.

To sense the mood ahead of the 2019 elections, Piplsay reached out to over 20,000 youngsters in the age group of 18-34 years. The pan India survey was conducted over a period of two weeks in April.

On the most important question about leadership, Piplsay found out that for a majority of the country’s millennials, Narendra Modi is the topmost PM choice for the country.

Almost 6 out of 10 youngsters trust Narendra Modi to run the country better. However, the fact that a significant 42% youngsters choose other leaders over Modi is something that cannot be ignored.

This mixed response shows that while there is still a Modi wave, not every youngster is willing to ride it.

The other leaders who got single digit votes include Mamta Banerjee, Yogi Adityanath, Chandrababu Naidu, Priyanka Gandhi, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Rajnikant among others.

There appears to be absolutely no contest between Modi and his closest political rival Arvind Kejriwal. India’s muffler man, who ironically came to power with massive youth support, is more than seven times less popular than the PM. But he manages to beat Congress’s blue-eyed boy Rahul Gandhi whose popularity seems to be on a downhill slide.

Decoding the building blocks

A huge percentage of youngsters believe that demonetization and black money crackdown have made a credible impact. For them, these government reforms are a natural extension of Modi’s commitment to a corruption free India. This sentiment persists despite there being no proof of reduction in corruption or black money post these reforms.

Even Modi’s numerous foreign tours find favor. Youngsters see these visits as being beneficial for the country, both in terms of international relations and foreign investments – the latter helping generate more jobs.

Yet, Modi’s promise of creating 10 million new jobs for youth seems to have fallen way short of the ambitious figure. Official data from the labour bureau show that India’s organised sector created only about 4.95 jobs in 2014, 1.35 lakh jobs in 2015 – lowest in six years and 4.16 lakh jobs in 2016-2017

Not everyone seems impressed with this BJP run though. A good 25% youngsters refuse to believe in the much touted ‘Ache Din’ slogan while another 17% seen unsure about it.

Over 65% of the country’s population today is below the age of 35. Their sheer strength gives youngsters the power to shape a party’s destiny. Winning them over is not just crucial but also inescapable.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi seemed to have deciphered this writing on the wall, much ahead of others. From Radio to social media to on ground events, he has tapped into every media platform available to engage with the youth and impress them with his government’s self-claimed victories.

So far this strategy seems to have worked well for the BJP, as shown by the Piplsay survey. But it needs to be seen if these efforts will actually translate into more power for Modi and his party.

The 2019 elections will be their reality check

This Saturday, August 11, voters in Hawaii will choose the Democratic nominees — and the likely eventual winners — in highly contested primary elections for governor and Congress.

Hawaii is a solidly blue state and went to Hillary Clinton by more than 30 points in 2016. The victors of Saturday’s Democratic primaries are thus heavily favored to win in November’s general election. That makes the primaries the most competitive elections of the year, and with Hawaii’s long history of volatile and difficult-to-poll primaries, there could be some major surprises.

The controversial Democratic Congress member for the Second District, Tulsi Gabbard, faces a number of challengers but enters the primary as a heavy favorite. There is also an open seat in the Hawaii First, with a competitive Democratic primary. US Sen. Mazie Hirono has no Democratic competition, but Republicans will have to choose a sacrificial lamb from a large field that includes a Lyndon LaRouche follower and a guy who lives in California.

Incumbent Gov. David Ige, who unseated his predecessor Neil Abercrombie in the Democratic primary four years ago, faces stiff competition from Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, a veteran Hawaii politico who served 12 years in the state Senate (two as Senate president) and is now in her second stint representing the First Congressional District.

Ige’s popularity has plummeted due to his handling of a false alarm sent to Hawaii residents in January telling them a ballistic missile was incoming (he said he would’ve alerted the public that it was a false alarm earlier but he forgot his Twitter password). The race has centered less on policy disputes than on the question of Ige’s and Hanabusa’s relative levels of competence.

Hanabusa has had a series of tough losses in the 2010s. First, in 2010, when Abercrombie resigned from the First District seat in Congress to run for governor, Hanabusa ran in a special election to replace him. But Ed Case, a center-right Democrat who represented the Second District (covering some suburban parts of Oahu as well as every other Hawaiian island) from 2002 to 2007, ran too, positioning himself as a moderate Democrat to Hanabusa’s progressive. Case and Hanabusa split the vote, letting Charles Djou, a Republican, win. Hanabusa went on to beat Djou for the seat in the 2010 general election.

In late 2012, shortly before long-time Sen. Daniel Inouye died, he requested that Abercrombie name Hanabusa as his successor. Abercrombie refused and gave the position to Brian Schatz, his lieutenant governor. Hanabusa, with the support of the Inouye family, challenged Schatz for the job in 2014, losing by a razor-thin margin.

She gave up her House seat for that race but won it back in a 2016 special election when her successor, Mark Takai, died of pancreatic cancer. Now she’s abandoning her seat yet again to challenge Ige. The state’s Democratic power structure has split on the race, with Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, former Sen. Daniel Akaka, former Govs. Benjamin Cayetano and George Ariyoshi, and even Ige’s own former Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui (who resigned in frustration with Ige) backing Hanabusa. But some powerful unions like UNITE HERE (which represents many hotel workers in a state whose main industry is tourism) are still supporting Ige.

The final poll before the election, by the Honolulu Civil Beat, found Ige ahead by 9 points; a few weeks earlier, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser had him ahead by 4. Mere months earlier, in the wake of the nuclear false alarm, Hanabusa led by as much as 20 points, but she lost ground as the incident faded from memory.

Hanabusa is giving up her seat in Congress to run against Ige, and the Democratic contest to succeed her in the Hawaii First, which covers Honolulu’s urban center and some neighboring suburbs on the island of Oahu, is beyond crowded.

The frontrunner in two recent polls is … Ed Case, the moderate Democrat who split the vote with Hanabusa back in 2010. He’s a frequent candidate, losing Senate primaries in both 2006 and 2012 after attracting little establishment support, but he has strong name recognition both from his prior stint in Congress and because of his membership in the prominent Case family (his cousin Steve is the billionaire founder of AOL).

Case’s challengers are:

Lt. Gov. Doug Chin, who succeeded Tsutsui as lieutenant governor earlier this year and served as state attorney general from 2015 until then. A veteran prosecutor and civil servant, he’s never held elected office before, and has faced strident criticism for a virulently anti-gay speech he delivered at his church in 1995 (he has since apologized and touted his actions supporting marriage equality as attorney general).

State Sen. Donna Mercado Kim, who’s served in the legislature for nearly two decades, including two years as state Senate president; before that, she was a 14-year veteran of the Honolulu City Council.

State Rep. Beth Fukumoto, who until 2017 was a Republican and House minority leader. She was expelled from that position and switched parties after participating in the Women’s March and condemning President Trump for “racist and sexist” remarks. She’s done a remarkable pivot in her issue positions, even now supporting single-payer health care.

State Rep. Kaniela Ing, a self-described democratic socialist endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, Our Revolution, and Justice Democrats, as well as national progressives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Reps. Ro Khanna (D-CA) and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Shaun King, and Bill McKibben. He’s running on a platform including Medicare-for-all but also a unique public housing-based Housing for All plan. He has attracted considerable national attention but lagged in the polls, and faced criticism for using campaign funds to pay his rent.

In the Hawaii Second District’s Democratic primary, Tulsi Gabbard is a heavy favorite to be renominated. An Iraq War veteran, dedicated non-interventionist, and early endorser of Bernie Sanders’s presidential bid, Gabbard has attracted substantial national popularity but also criticism for her choice to meet with Syrian despot Bashar al-Assad in 2017; she has also refused to acknowledge that Assad is responsible for chemical weapons attacks against civilians. She has also endorsed blocking refugees from Syria and Iraq, supported Egyptian dictator Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and backed India’s far-right leader Narendra Modi.

Gabbard’s enthusiasm for dictators was enough to help lead the Hawaii teachers union to endorse Sherry Campagna, Gabbard’s most prominent challenger. But Gabbard has refused to debate her opponents, preventing them from getting much traction, and is likely to win in a walk.
