Okay, so people who have only been in the TES fandom from Oblivion or Skyrim onward are really lucky, because I wouldn’t wish the jump from Morrowind to Oblivion on anyone. And I’m very glad the current gen of TES fan is a lot tamer because, hoo boy, I hate Oblivion for a reason and the entire reason is just the baggage it brought with it.

Picture this: I am a young teenager when I am introduced to Morrowind. I spend a lot of time on a forum called Planet Elder Scrolls. By and large, most of the people there are tired modders who’ve been doing it for ages in other games or people who lean more toward the “nerd” criteria than “gamer” criteria. Because this was an age when being a COOL MAINSTREAM GAMER(tm) was relatively… new, I guess? Halo really changed the landscape on that one.

So, it’s a quiet community of modders and nerds who mostly just post screenshots and cringe fic and everyone thinks their Nerevarine is the best and most coolest Nerevarine ever. The biggest argument we have is about mods being lore compliant and, even then, the consensus is “if I want to put my Altmer in assless chaps and a thong, he is GOING to be in assless chaps and a thong. Fuck you.”

This was the era of Westly and AlienSlof and Kikaimegami and we were JUST figuring out who TrainWiz was.

But, when I was sixteen years old, Oblivion was released and there was a… shift. A change we could sense. This was the era where COOL MAINSTREAM GAMING was in its infancy and I don’t think the previous TES fandom was prepared for what that brought to the doorstep. Because, suddenly, it went from “oh my god I can’t wait for Oblivion, look at how alive the world feels!!” to a quiet “we are going to burn this fandom to the ground and start anew.”

Now, I didn’t really go much on the Bethesda forums because they were big and the idea of talking to a dev was intimidating and maybe they handled it better. But PES was small and independent and suddenly there were GAMERBROS everywhere whose bread and butter consisted of starting shit and ignoring rules. Morrowind was ugly and stupid and they didn’t understand why we still played it, and they’d drop into topics about Morrowind and tell us so. Our characters were stupid and didn’t fit lore, but the front page was PLASTERED with meticulously modeled big titty anime demon girls from their Oblivion saves. Oblivion began the MASSIVE BOOB AND SEXY WALK movement, and we were helpless as our screenshot forum suddenly looked like a weird corner of pornhub.

Here’s some of the worst (funniest? Frustrating?) things I remember:

- AlienSlof was an admin for PES and a mod maker who, essentially, was all about making Hot Guy mods… and also horses, for some reason. She liked her dudes to be thotted up before it was cool, and she made her personal mods available publicly in case anyone else wanted their elf boy in a mesh crop top. She was, predictably, not scandalized by Hot Girl mods, though they didn’t appeal to her.

But then the Gamer Bros descended on her, angry that she would dare not make mods tailored for them, making homophobic comments, being general pricks. And it sucked because Slof was also an exhausted thirty-something whose response to this is “I don’t got time for this shit,” and she… delisted everything she ever made.

- There were some who tried to brave Morrowind and every last one of them seemed to completely miss the Dwemer Puzzle Box from the main quest. Morrowind General was flooded with “where box?? CUBE?!?! HELP MODS NO CUBE!!! CuBE?? plz wher box plz?” to the point that one of the mods angrily made an entire screenshot-riddled guide to how to walk into a room and look to your left.

- My last straw was a guy who decided Morrowind was too bland and boring and so his idea was to make a mod that would gut it entirely and rebuild it as some edgy Ashland post-apoc volcano hellscape. Part of his manifesto was changing the racial traits to make more sense, and one of the changes he made was to make Redguards immune to fire, which he specifically pointed out that he did in order to make them “more realistic.” We had to explain to him that melanin did not make you incapable of burning to death.

- Though I was also mad about the theft of Intellectual Property that suddenly sprang up. I had fics I wrote spread wide and far. :(

Unfortunately, a few years after I left, GameSpy (which hosted PES) shuttered. The site eventually redirected to The Nexus and now… well, it’s but a distant memory and so many of the old mods are probably gone, save for some hard drives. I know a lot of them were archived by Fliggerty, but now Fliggerty is also defunct and searching the Morrowind archive is a hassle.

But yeah. There you go. Oblivion was the bane of the TES fandom for a very long time and I’m glad to see we somehow recovered from that shit. Awesome!

12. favorite character to write about this year

Okay wow this was very hard to decide. I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone by writing so many new characters this year. Samara is fun but her justicar code is just too much of a struggle at times. Nihlus? Basically feels like I’m writing an OC. Legion is a blast to write, but that’s just a robot. Lmfao my answer to this question is such a predictable thing I feel like I have to justify it.

Thane. He’s my favorite character to write about. He was in the entirety of ME2 and we were given so many breadcrumbs about his life but never any real depth to it. He’s got the lore, just not the details. It’s A LOT of fun to write. Not only that, the lore is open to such a wide range of interpretation that every person who writes him can do it in such a different way. Annnnd this is a great segue into the next question…

Warning from the start: this shit is D A R K. Archive warning of graphic violence, but I think parts could also be construed as coercion and a little dubcon (a tag of “potential dubcon” is on this fic and I wholeheartedly agree with that). Beautiful Far Away: While on a routine exploratory mission, Colonel Jack O'Neill and Captain Samantha Carter get caught up in a children's game that turns out to be the beginning of Rorilian marriage rites. When seismic activity starts to rock the village, the local leaders demand the ritual be seen through to its natural conclusion to avoid further angering their gods. Sam's equipment suggests the tremors are caused by an unidentifiable metal, but her science seems to be a point of contention amongst the leaders. She's convinced she needs just a little more time to figure out what is happening on the planet. Unfortunately, that means she's jumping into a ritual marriage with her new commanding officer. What could possibly go wrong?

My Scars Healed (aka the Cottage AU): Abandoned off-world, living is about more than just survival.

In Media Res: When Sam and Jack are taken captive and put to work in a mining camp, that turns out to be the least of their troubles. Forced by circumstance to live in close proximity, their time as captives has consequences neither one foresees.

Compliance: The end comes fast. One moment it’s a normal day with paperwork and bad coffee and the next it’s a scramble for the event horizon as the Mountain comes down around them. The base empties out with surprising efficiency, and by the time Jack hangs up the red phone on the last conversation he’ll ever have with the President, only Carter and Daniel and a couple techs are still in the gate room, the last of the supplies being sent through to their fall back site.

Bird Stealing Bread: Jack had actually imagined being stranded off-world quite a few times. But he really, really, really hadn't counted on being stranded off-world with Sam. And Pete.

Under the Sun: ABANDONED FIC BUT IT’S SO GOOD. When lightning strikes the DHD and strands Sam and Jack alone on a planet, they must rely on one another to get through until help can arrive. Soon, though, they discover they're not alone on the planet and things change. Suddenly they're thrust into local politics and Sam is drafted to help save the locals' lives. Perhaps, if they play their cards right, all of it can help them get home.

Hi, i loved your new fic and i'm f*cking pissed at people for being rude to you. I don't really know what's their problem. You're a talented writer and I hope no one convinces you otherwise.

I deleted the specific comments (which was just one person I don’t want to complain too much) because they were being kinda rude but tbh I see their point? Like in short tiny just smut fics, it’s hard to work in the feel that these are specific characters. So it’s something for me to think about and work on moving forward.

Also, thanks everyone for always been nice and supportive of me! I’m soft and insecure so it means a lot to me :) I’m working on a longer fic, multi-chap with hopefully some vague semblance of plot (but no power dynamics), a shorter power exchange fic, and a short sweet piece as a companion to the one in-canonverse one that I posted... what a year ago? plz anticipate.

oh man i remember building a rollercoaster when i was in high school learning physics lolol. but the fun part was that we got to go to disneyland and see it put into practice

omg are you for real??? disneyland?? i am so jealous what the heck. idk what your project was like but ours was pretty weird. we were given these like foam tubes and we hung them on the wall and had to roll a marble down them. it needed to have a certain amount of loops and jumps on it, and our coaster would work perfectly every time but as soon as the teacher came around it would fail miserably

In other news... the results are in for my non-WA Flash ships to write in the month of June. To pace myself, I'm only planning to do the top 3. HC getting the most votes rly threw me for a loop, so I'm still trying to figure out what to write for that one, but I'm def ready to write the cynco and parkwest fics. The Wally & Linda fic is a multi of at least four chapters that I planned shortly before season 4 started of them meeting just before Barry & Iris' wedding and deciding to date a few months later. It'll be really cute & fluffy with a hint of quickwest angst, but WL will be endgame. Question: Would you guys like an update every week of the parkwest fic or would you prefer me to save it till the last week of my hiatus (which will prob be the first week of July) & just post all the chaps throughout the week? Lmao. Okay, Anon, here is what I will do (since I don’t see myself getting to this fic any time soon). Every time you send me a message asking for it (though plz don’t do it more than once or twice a month - idk have time for more than that! lol), I will write up a little snippet and post it as a preview on my side blog. I just really don’t want to start any more multi-chaps (unless they’re very short), aside from the post s3 one I started planning months ago. Once I’ve gotten through at least a couple of my multis, then I can put this new one on the roster.

Since I never post anything without my beta looking it over first - and I’d rly rather she look over stuff I plan on posting right away - I’ll just post them on my side blog. So, if you’re not already, I’d very much recommend you following that blog ( @backtothestart02bts ), so you can see those when I post them.

I appreciate your continued interest in the fic though. There’s no way I’ll forget to write it with all these reminders coming my way. XD
