#plus there's a whole ass scale to be had when it comes to merformers and how mechanical vs technoorganic vs organic they are

Oh exactly
There's the obvious ones of different color palettes, general shapes, and markings. But I was definitely thinking about Soundwave being more adapted for more open ocean and Rodimus being adapted to more tropical shallows.
I'd expect Rodimus to probably have a little more flexibility and agility, while Soundwave is probably built more for stamina and being a little more tanky (a little)
They're different types of predators (because typically in mer aus mers are mostly carnivorous), with Soundwave maybe being used to fewer larger prey while Rodimus is more used to many smaller fish
They'd probably have Kind Of similar skeletal structures, or at least there's some continuity there, because they ARE both mers
Yeah yeah yeah fin details especially the caudal fin / tailfin (I have a faint idea how different caudal fins work but I need to refresh myself and Google's being useless right now) but YES THERE ARE SOOO MANY FIN TYPES WE CAN CHOOSE FROM
You might've misunderstood what I meant which was Soundwave being more based on his tfp design and Rodimus being more on his mtmte design, for the reference™️ but one can mix the designs theoretically
