I have secured a ride to go get more mystery snails! I’m glad because i did not like the idea of an hour bus ride with a bag of aquatic critters.
Not even sure a bus driver would let me on to be honest with a bag full of water and snails…

How To Plan A Summer Wedding
The Skinny on Summer Weather
Slap on that sunblock, because in nearly all parts of the country you can usually count on temps in the 70s (or higher!)—especially in the dog days of summer, like late July and August.
While sweet summertime means blue skies and balmy breezes most of the time, there are still some weather concerns to be aware of. For example, many east coast areas can experience torrential rain in the form of thunderstorms—soooo not ideal for an outdoor wedding! Then there's the south and southwest, where the thermometer can get up to 100 degrees fahrenheit or higher. An outdoor ceremony in this heat gives new meaning to the phrase, sweating for the wedding.
And, while less likely, there's the potential for natural disasters that can occur in the summer months. On the west coast, drought conditions frequently cause large-scale wildfires that bring hazy skies, poor air quality, and even evacuations. The opposite side of the country comes with the nasty Atlantic hurricane season, which begins June 1 and peaks in late August.
So…to play it safe, know what weather is forecasted for your wedding day, make sure to give your out-of-town guests whatever wardrobe tips they need to be prepared, and always—we repeat, ALWAYS—have a bad-weather backup plan. Just. in. case.
Summer Holidays
Besides fabulous weather, summer seems to be the least limiting in terms of holidays and other potential hiccups. While you won't have to compete with many major holidays, the months of June through July are some of the most popular times to get married AND go on vacation. You'll want to keep your guests' wallets in mind by giving them plenty of time to book flights and plan travel. Trust us, they'll thank you.
Here are a few dates to keep in mind:
Memorial Day – Always a Monday in May (Technically this is a spring holiday, but widely considered the unofficial start of summer)
Father's Day – Always a Sunday in June
Independence Day – Always July 4th, but days off can vary
Labor Day – Always a Monday in September
Hint: Save-the-dates for destination weddings typically get sent out 8–12 months in advance, while save-the-dates for local weddings can be sent out closer to 4 months in advance.
Summer Wedding Pros & Cons
There are so many advantages to getting married in the summer:
Typically gorgeous weather. Break out those sunnies!
There are fewer holidays to work around. Plus, it's widely considered PC to have an Independence Day or Labor Day weekend wedding.
The "Yes" RSVPs are more likely to roll in. Guests are often more willing and excited to take time off work and travel to a summer wedding!
Your outdoor venue and location choices are wide-open. Think barns, mountaintops and, of course, toes-in-the-sand beach weddings. The choices are endless!
However, there are a fair number of disadvantages to be aware of:
Summer is the most popular season to tie the knot. Venues and vendors often up their prices during this time, especially on weekends. Keep an eye out for peak-season rates when planning your wedding budget.
Destination wedding and honeymoon prices are also hitting their peak as most Americans book their vacation during the summer months.
Your favorite venues and vendors could be booked up months to years in advance for popular summer wedding dates.
Summer Color Palette
Unlike other times of the year and their seasonal hues, the sunshine-filled days of summer complement nearly any wedding color palette. While you'll typically see bright colors at summer weddings, there's no need to shy away from deep blues, rich grays, or even black. Don't be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to putting together your own colors!
Bridesmaids and Groomsmen
When it comes to dressing your bridal party, comfort needs to be at the top of the list. If you're tying the knot in the Deep South in late July, chances are your 'maids and groomsmen won't appreciate being buried under layers of fabric and accessories. Consider shorter dresses or lighter fabrics, like organza or charmeuse.
For groomsmen, you'll want to be extra certain you won't be causing sweat overload before the ceremony has even started! Stick with lighter suit jackets and vests—or ditch the jackets altogether. Look into a variety of different hot-weather-friendly looks like khaki, rolled sleeves, suspenders, or even shorts and flip-flops!
Working With What's In Season
When you buy what's in season, you get food and flowers at the peak of their supply when costs are normally lower. Plus, when they're locally grown they don't need to be shipped halfway around the globe. So not only do you save money, but you also reduce your carbon footprint. Win-win.
—Summer Wedding Food—
Much like spring, summer is peak harvesting season for fruits and vegetables. Summer's sunshine means there's no excuse to serve food that doesn't include a little color! As for veggies, the sky's the limit as to what's in season: green beans, cucumbers, eggplant, peas, and corn—just to name a few.
While fruit harvests are bountiful during this time of year, the weather can affect when they're ripest. Be on the lookout for melons, peaches, plums, raspberries, and blackberries because all of these are at their juiciest in the summer months. Fortunately, the abundance of produce in the summer can lead to lower prices, which is especially great if you're planning a farm-to-table wedding!
—Summer Wedding Flowers—
No matter where you are in the country, it seems that beautiful blooms are popping up all over the place. There are literally hundreds of options, but here are a few of our favorite summertime flowers:
Sunflowers. This classic is the poster child of summer, but we love how they add a pop of bright yellow to any bouquet.
Hydrangeas. These fluffy blossoms are summer staples that come in a wide variety of pretty colors.
Calla Lilies make a statement when bundled in a bouquet, and add a classy accent to any summer arrangement.
Amaranthus. From deep reds to fresh greens, this rope-like accent flower is perfect for boho or beach weddings, or even a more elegant affair!
Cacti. Use succulents like aloe and you can't go wrong.
Eucalyptus is a floral trend we're seeing year-round, and we're not complaining!
Pro Tip: Since some flowers are more prone to wilting in the summer heat than others, be sure to double-check with your florist before committing to any one flower or greenery.
Summer Catering Trends
With a cornucopia of fresh fruits and veggies to choose from, you may have already started your search for the perfect hand-lettered sign to direct your guests to the salad bar. Not so fast! There are oh-so-many ways to pay homage to the tastes of the season, not all of which involve plants. If your personal faves include poultry, beef, and seafood, they can easily be incorporated into lighter versions of classics. Or, consider fun, non-traditional alternatives like tapas (Spanish small plates), a festive taco bar, or even good old-fashioned barbecue!
Your reception wouldn't be complete without a summer-inspired dessert! How about wine-flavored sorbet, yummy ice cream, or other frozen treats like snow cones, granita, or gelato to cool your guests down on those warm summer days! Or, what about a classic summer staple like cobbler or pie? There are so many options to choose from, so go wild!
Summer Wedding Cake Trends
Play with light and refreshing flavors like lemon, raspberry, and coconut instead of rich, fudgy chocolate—unless that's your thing, of course! If you're not into the "naked" cake trend, ice your cake with summery frostings that showcase coconut, cherry, or Tahitian vanilla. Dress it up with sprigs of lavender or rosemary, some gold leaf, or a pretty ombré pattern. The latest trend we're partial to? Colorful brush strokes paired with bright blooms. You could even ask if your baker is willing to collab with your florist to match your cake to your bouquet! Your wedding cake—assuming you even have one—should be as unique as you are!
Summer-Inspired Wedding Favors
Your guests will no doubt appreciate customized hand fans to keep cool or neon-colored sunnies to block summer's harsh rays. Or, hit up Old Navy's $1 Flip-Flop Sale to stock up on cheap sandals for tired feet to change into. You can also pick up miniature bottles of rosé, tiny potted succulents, homemade jam, and even travel-sized bottles of sunscreen with a custom sticker slapped on. And if you're really on a budget, how about some fresh seasonal fruit for your guests to enjoy?
Summer Signature Cocktails
If you're serving cocktails on your big day, there's no better time to get creative than during the summer! Sparkling wines, champagne spritzers, and fruity cocktails are just the tip of the iceberg. Hit up your bartender (or just the drink-maker at your fave hangout spot!) for custom cocktails inspired by you and your fiancé. Refreshing berry mojitos, vodka-infused Arnold Palmers, boozy sangria, and mango bellinis—oh, yes! Just be sure to have water available for your guests at all times to keep them hydrated. Drink up!

How to Say Yes to Sweet While Saying No to Sugar
If you think healthy eating means a prison sentence, especially when it comes to desserts, you are in for a surprise! Yes, the truth is that as long as you continue to use sugar-laden foods or sugar substitutes, you will keep your taste buds trained for sugar. The healthy goal is to cut back on its use so you no longer need everything to taste sweet. Allow your taste buds to change so that the desire for sweetness can be met in a safe way -- from fruit and other naturally sweetened foods. Relying on the sweetness of fruit and using only small amounts of honey, leaves you flavor -- and lots of it!
If a recipe doesn't rely on sugar for texture (like certain cakes and cookies), I try to eliminate or replace sugar with concentrated fruit juices, applesauce, pureed bananas, prunes, or apricots. I also replace sugar with smaller amounts of honey or pure maple syrup. Although these are still forms of sugar, the benefit is that they have a higher sweetness concentration so a smaller quantity may be used. The addition of cinnamon or vanilla will enhance the sweetness of the dessert even more.
NO SUGAR RECIPE MODIFICATIONS:
If a recipe calls for 1 cup of sugar, you can instead use:
1/2 cup pure maple syrup or 1/4 cup honey (reduce liquid by 3 Tbs. or add 3 Tbs. flour); reduce baking temp by 25 degrees
3 mashed bananas, plus 1 tsp. ground cinnamon and touch of vanilla
3/4 cup pure maple syrup
1 cup apple juice plus 1/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder as a substitute for 1 cup milk in a recipe
1/2 cup dried fruit puree (pureed apricots, unsweetened pitted dates, prunes) with a touch of cinnamon
1 cup unsweetened applesauce, crushed pineapple or mango puree with 1 tsp. ground cinnamon and a touch of vanilla
“Chai Pear and Blackberry Crisp with Orange Vanilla Ricotta Cream” gives us a delicious example of how this can be done -- replacing Sugar in the Raw with the a small amount of honey. This scrumptious crisp that can be used for brunch or dessert is completed with a nutty, crunch topping for extra texture, and uses P.S. Flavor!™ Mai Chai in the ricotta rather than a heaping amount of sugar. When selecting fruit for your crisp, choose fruits that are seasonal (pears and blackberries are wonderful for the fall and winter, while peaches and raspberries will be most sweet in the summer months) and buy them ripe -- giving the most natural sweetness, and many times eliminating the need for more. It's a perfect addition to the high-protein, flavor-packed brunch bar that was featured in the December 2020 P.S. Flavor!™ Cooking Club! To get the full menu and recipes, click here.

What would restitution be when my insurance is paying medicals?
I was hit on my bike by a driver of a car, who has since gone through the criminal court system and restitution has been awarded to me. So far, my own insurance company has been paying for my medical bills. What is my demand for restitution? Is it just the amount that the insurance does not cover (co-pays, etc.) or everything? What if I don't know how much medical help I'll need in the future? Is a restitution award a solid number, or can it be an agreement for the driver to pay medicals into the future, as well? I believe restitution also includes time I have missed from work (lost wages), etc.; Does it also include non-economic damages like pain and suffering? I have a civil suit against the driver, and I am just unclear how restitution from the criminal case works with the damages that I am seeking in the civil suit. Any elucidation would help. Thanks! Car insurance renewal - is it compulsory ?
I had accident earlier this year(few months ago) wasn't my fault and other side admitted it but they still haven't paid for damages so the case is still open. I have been told by my car insurance company that they don't know where is the problem but as final bill hasn't been paid as a result my car renewal will go up as my previous 4 years no claim will vanish for now. Apparently once the other side pays what they should then they reduce my monthly payments accordingly as they take no claims years(this is 5 th year into account.) My question is : 1. is this correct what I said so far(or been told) 2. Do I have to renew my car insurance which expired last week even if I don't drive my car which is safely parked on my driveway(off road) ? Can I pay later lets say next month ? this is due my finance difficulties and I hope that other side pays by then and so I pay much less insurance. Professional advice would be great ! Thanks for reading :-)

Should I live without health insurance?
I'm 33. My husband and I are self-employed and not making much money right now. We recently graduated from the same masters program and started our business. We would like to start a family - soon. Costs of raising a child aside, I am beginning to worry about the costs of having a baby in the U.S. I have begun looking into different insurance plans. Currently I am covered at a VERY basic level and he has no insurance. From what I have found so far, all the plans we can afford have very large deductibles, especially where pre- /postnatal and labor and delivery costs are concerned. Is it crazy to consider paying for these expenses out of pocket? It seems as though we will need to come up with about $20,000 on our own before our deductible is met in any case. Health insurance in NY state for pregnant women?
I just graduated with a bachelors degree, and my student health insurance runs out in August. The health insurance offered by my husbands job (which won't open up to me until Jan.1 anyway) considers pregnancy a pre existing condition, and won't cover it. We have been searching for affordable plans, but the only ones we have found that will cover pregnancy aren't accepted in New York state. For all the plans offered in NY that we've been able to find, none cover pregnancies in progress. I would hate to have to use the state provided health care plan for pregnant mothers (mostly because I feel like there is no reason for me to be part of a government program when we are capable of paying for our own insurance, but also because it means we have to go to specific clinics and I won't be able to keep my doctor), but there is no way we will be able to cover all the costs of a birth, especially if for some reason I need a C-Section or the like. Now, I keep hearing that I need to register and smog test my car in California since I'm currently living there while attending school. If I do such a thing, does that not mean that I will have to change my insurance to California rates? I do not plan on residing in California post graduation, does this make a difference also? Someone please help....""

Drag Test: A Carbon Fiber Driveshaft Really Does Shave ET!
Drag racers are always hunting for an edge. Be it under the hood or elsewhere, they’re always trying to hook harder and run down the track more efficiently. And while increasing horsepower is commonplace, reducing weight and rotational inertia is another sure-fire way to improve acceleration.
In the case of the 2005-present Ford Mustang you can shave weight and go quicker with the install of an aftermarket driveshaft. The S197 (2005-2014) and S550 (2015-2018) Mustangs come equipped with a steel, two-piece driveshaft which does a fantastic job limiting NVH (noise, vibration and harshness), but it’s heavy, (38-40 lbs) and can be a weak link once you add a power or sticky tires.
Car Craft readers may remember our red 2014 Mustang GT tester from a few months ago. We hit the strip with this beauty and ran mid-12s before adding a VMP blower and blasting into the 10s. And while 10s are awesome, we’re certain the increased torque and firm shifts are eventually going to exceed the mechanical limits of the stock driveshaft.
To keep things safe and legal, we swapped a QA1 REV carbon fiber driveshaft that’s designed specifically for late-model Mustangs and can be ordered with or without SFI certification for roughly a $100 difference. “Our REV driveshafts are a truly engineered system from transmission to rear end,” said Dave Goldie, Drag Race Product Manager at QA1. “They can handle up to 1,500 hp with a max rated torque of 1,000 lb-ft. In addition, they feature Spicer Life-series 1350 U-joints, and use a high-speed CV joint with a high-speed sealing boot and high-temp grease. This high-speed capability allows us to minimize effects of NVH while increasing the performance.”
The 2005-2018 Mustang REV-series carbon fiber driveshaft is also a one-piece unit, so it’s very light at just 23.5 lbs. It has outstanding technical features that reduce weight, improve safety, and will make your car quicker on track. And it’s designed to bolt directly into any 2005-present Mustang, including the Shelby GT350.
As we mentioned, the stock driveshaft is a two-piece design. This arrangement allows the factory to virtually eliminate NVH from the driveline, while providing a tight fit under the tunnel. Ford’s driveshaft uses individual front and rear shafts that are coupled by a center bearing joint. The center bearing joint is supported by a hangar that mounts to the floor of the car. As you can imagine, it’s not the best choice for drag racing, road racing, or any application with big power.
“A single-piece driveshaft can be a significant improvement over the stock two-piece shaft,” says QA1’s Goldie. “The auto manufacturers have design criteria including length and diameter that make a single-piece driveshaft pretty much impossible using traditional materials. Automotive designers must adhere to constraints like how close the shaft can be to other components, plus driveshaft cost, and of course, they have concern for NVH. This leads them to a two-piece design that is typically heavy and may include rubber mounting or drive components. In the aftermarket/racing world, these restrictions do not exist and allow the use of larger diameters and alternate materials such as carbon fiber,” he added.
When designing a single-piece driveshaft for newer production vehicles, a major concern is the critical speed of the driveshaft. This is due to the ever-decreasing area around a driveshaft that would allow for a larger diameter. Since diameter is relatively limited, composites are a good solution for higher critical speed encountered in racing and offer a significant weight savings over traditional materials. According to Goldie, a one-piece composite design can save as much as 20 pounds over the stock assembly.
The reduction in rotating weight and the failure mode of carbon fiber results in a significant improvement in safety, too. Additionally, the removal of the rubber components results in a more direct torque transmission to the rear tires and gives the driver a more positive feel.
“Carbon fiber is preferred because it’s the safest and lightest material available to the racing world,” says Goldie. “Most of us have seen the damage that a steel or aluminum driveshaft can do to the cockpit of a racecar. In the unlikely event of a failure, a carbon fiber driveshaft shreds like a broom, so there is no damage to the racer or other parts of the car.”
And to ensure the highest standards in engineering and manufacture, QA1 builds its carbon fiber driveshafts in-house. “QA1 is redefining industry standards by performing our filament winding in-house, in our Lakeville, Minnesota facility,” says Goldie. “This is a necessary process to design and produce the correct torsional stiffness specifications for world-class carbon fiber driveshafts. It is imperative to have control over the entire filament winding process, and by having the specialized equipment in-house, QA1 is able to customize tube length, wall thickness, and pattern, enabling products such as carbon fiber driveshafts to be designed and wound for specific applications.
Install & Test
We turned to Ray Skillman Ford in Greenwood, Indiana where Mustang drag racer Joe Cram handled the job in a couple of hours. Cram was impressed with the QA1 driveshaft and also with the Stifflers’ driveshaft safety loop we brought along. This is a straight-forward installation, assuming you have access to a lift or a jack and jack stands. Air tools are also helpful, especially when dealing with driveshaft bolts.
After installation, which included the Stifflers safety loop, Cram carefully inspected the area around the driveshaft. Carbon fiber is very strong, but it can be damaged easily should it drag across components while spinning. We also noted earlier that the QA1 shaft can be ordered with or without SFI certification, so be sure to check your part numbers if this is important to you. We were glad to have a safe, SFI-approved driveshaft and safety loop under the car, and eager to get to the track and see if the mass reduction helped out elapsed time.
We didn’t have to wait long, as the following day was Wild Wednesday at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. Car owner Kevin McKenna has been burning up the track every week, practicing his driving technique and making runs, so we had a great performance baseline. As a side note, the previous best e.t. came earlier in the year at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida, where in sea-level conditions the Stang ran 10.79 at 126 mph. But this was summer in Indy at Lucas Oil Raceway (which sits at 856 feet) and corrected altitude during out test was 2,900 ASL. In these conditions, McKenna had been running in the 11.09-11.12 range.
“I’m very pleased,” said McKenna after making three runs. “The car ran 11.04, 11.02 and after a nice cooldown it went 10.99 at 128.45 mph in conditions that were less than favorable, actually 2,900 feet corrected, compared to the seal-level conditions in Florida. Based on similar runs, I’d estimate that the driveshaft was worth a tenth on average. Best of all, the car was noticeably smoother, which makes me wonder if the stock driveshaft was slightly out of balance or perhaps the QA1 unit is just that darned good!”
REV Series carbon fiber driveshafts are made specifically for S197 and S550 Ford Mustangs so they bolt directly into place. They are wound in-house using 3M Matrix Resin in QA1’s Lakeville, Minnesota facility.
Engineered For Critical Speed
Custom manufacturing and winding of carbon fiber tubing allows engineers to achieve the required performance including diameter, torque capacity, torsional stiffness, and critical speed. Dave Goldie of QA1 explained: “Driveshaft diameter is important, but it needs to be considered in conjunction with wall thickness and the type of materials used to make the driveshaft. There is a trade-off in diameter and wall thickness from a torque and critical speed standpoint. Also, the modulus or stiffness of the material plays a significant role in what diameter is desired. In a composite shaft, fibers can be oriented so that a driveshaft can have a relatively small diameter but maintain a high strength and critical speed.”
A properly balanced driveshaft is required for maximum performance and low NVH. Balancing must include U-joints and slip yokes as assembled. QA1 shafts are balanced as an assembly without the use of welded or bonded weights, ensuring a precise and more reliable balance.
This driveshaft was intentionally tested to failure in QA1’s torsion test machine. Unlike steel and aluminum driveshafts, carbon fiber driveshafts will shred like a broom instead of bending. This keeps the driveshaft from becoming a dangerous object in the event of a failure.
To improve our Mustang, we headed to Ray Skillman Ford in Greenwood, Indiana where tech Joe Cram handled the installation.
For added safety, and to remain NHRA-legal, we also picked up a driveshaft safety loop from Stifflers Chassis & Suspension. This unit is lightweight, easy to install, and bolts in with no modifications.
Joe Cram got started by unbolting the mid-pipe under the Mustang. Since the factory H-pipe must be removed, he disconnected and unbolted the O2 sensors, too.
Next, he unbolted the H-pipe at the headers and set it out of the way. With the pipes removed he gained access to the stock driveshaft.
Here’s a look at the rearward mounting flange on the factory shaft. Cram used an impact gun and removed the bolts from the front, then the rear of the driveshaft.
With the front and rear disconnected, he removed the hangar bearing and pulled the driveshaft from the car. If you’re doing this at home, you might want an extra set of hands since the stock shaft weighs roughly 40 lbs.
There’s quite a difference between the two driveshafts: QA1’s REV carbon fiber unit comes in at just 23.5 lbs, which is roughly 17-18 lbs lighter than the factory unit. The improved performance of reduced weight is even greater on rotational inertia, which is where most of the performance increase comes from.
A close-up shows the hangar bearing that connects the front and rear of the factory driveshaft. While this reduces NVH, it has proven to be a weak link in the Mustang’s driveline.
Before installing the QA1 shaft, Cram inspected both the front and rear mounting flanges. A clean, clear surface is important, as debris can cause the new shaft to fit improperly.
The next step was to remove the CV joint adapter plate from the QA1 driveshaft (it comes mounted to the driveshaft for delivery) and install it on the pinion flange.
Aside from the carbon-fiber construction, the QA1 driveshaft features a beefy front mounting flange, Spicer Life-series 1350 U-joints, and a high-speed CV joint with a high-speed sealing boot and high-temp grease.
Cram lifted the carbon fiber haft into place and he tightened it down using the supplied hardware. Note how the new shaft fits nice and tidy in the tunnel of the Mustang.
The Stifflers’ driveshaft safety loop was easy, and took just a few minutes. The first step is to remove the three transmission crossmember bolts, then simply attached the base and snug the bolts. Next, the strap was slipped over the shaft and the bolts installed. You can complete this installation with or without the exhaust in place.
Before driving your car, it’s important to make certain that you have ample clearance between the loop and the driveshaft. As you can image, the QA1 REV carbon fiber driveshaft is very strong, but contact between any brackets, exhaust components, or the safety loop can cause damage to the shaft.

A Few Minutes with an 'Insulin Temperature Man' (Plus TempraMed Insulin Pen Cap Giveaway!)
New Post has been published on https://type2diabetestreatment.net/diabetes-mellitus/a-few-minutes-with-an-insulin-temperature-man-plus-tempramed-insulin-pen-cap-giveaway/
A Few Minutes with an 'Insulin Temperature Man' (Plus TempraMed Insulin Pen Cap Giveaway!)
This may be a time of colder weather when insulin overheating isn't top of mind, but it never hurts to be prepared, right?
Yep, keeping your insulin at ideal room room temps (between 59 and 86 degrees) isn't always easy -- especially in hotter climates with humidity, or in places where snow and frost are not uncommon.
Northern California startup TempraMed believes they have an awesome solution with their new Vivi Cool products, replaceable caps lined with a unique "super-insulation" that can fit over popular insulin pens, and soon also vials. TempraMed has been working on this tech for several years in stealth mode before exhibiting at the big annual diabetes educators conference last summer, and now they're ready to start showing their stuff to the Diabetes Community!
The first-generation Vivi Cap1 product fits over any type of insulin pen and adjusts constantly to keep the insulin pen at the higher end of room temp. It's based on the same space-industry-grade insulation material used in those fancy temperature-control mugs now sold at Starbucks!
In Spring 2017, TempraMed will launch a second-generation of its product that has a rechargeable battery and keeps the insulin pens at a cooler, refrigerated-type temperature, along with a version designed specifically for insulin vials. And they're also planning an EpiPen version of the cap to keep those allergy-emergency pens cool.
To get all the details on this product plus the company's backstory, we connected recently with TempraMed's Israeli founder Ron Nagar, who's been in the medical device field for 20 years. In fact, we've chatted with him before, in his role developing insulin absorption products at InsuLine. Though it's available in Europe, that hasn't come to market here in the States, but it's where Nagar became a sort of "insulin temperature man," and got his start developing what is now TempraMed.
Here is our interview with Nagar, followed by an exclusive DiabetesMine giveaway of the new Vivi Cap1 designed to keep insulin pens cool!
Q&A with TempraMed's Ron Nagar
DM) First off, do you have a personal diabetes connection?
RN) Yes, my father is a type 2 diabetic and my aunt injects insulin. I have spent the last 17 years developing devices to make it easy for people living with diabetes, starting with a project for non-invasive blood glucose monitoring 17 years ago that unfortunately did not have enough resources to complete development and get to market.
Then I founded InsuLine Medical, which developed InsuPatch and InsuPad, which both accelerate insulin absorption. InsuPad is now available in Europe, but still not in the U.S. At InsuLine I learned about the importance of temperature, which I used to improve blood perfusion then, and now I've moved to protecting the drug from being exposed to extreme temperatures.
So, it’s fair to state that while I’m not diabetic, I certainly have passion to help people living with diabetes as much as I can.
How did you come up with the idea for TempraMed?
Over the past 10 years, I’ve been working closely with Prof. David Klonoff and Prof. Bill Tamborlane who were medical advisors for my previous company, InsuLine Medical. About 4 years ago while I was still running the project at InsuLine, which was around temperature and its effects, David reminded me that there is need for temperature-stable insulin that became a major concern since Hurricane Katrina in the U.S. and during other cases when insulin might be exposed to extreme temperatures.
So when I moved on from InsuLine I saw an opportunity to come up with a solution that can work. Since I’m not a chemist I looked at the problem from the device perspective. At that time, an executive of one of the insulin manufacturing companies also asked me to meet with him during his vacation, on World Diabetes Day two years ago. He explained that he wouldn’t have bothered to meet me on that day unless it was important. That meeting emphasized to me the magnitude of the problem and that it is time to address it.
OK, tell us about about your Vivi Cool products…
The components of all our products are:
An outer plastic cover, and inner plastic adaptor that fits the pen type
Space-grade thermal insulation, held between the outer plastic cover and the inner plastic adaptor; this is the same special insulating material used in the space industry that's behind the new "Ember" temp-control coffee mugs from Starbucks
The inner filling is made of a heat-absorbing layer called Phase Change Material, which is non-toxic and non-flammable, and is commonly used in “green construction”
A primary (non-rechargeable) battery, switch, and Green/Red indicator light and temperature sensor
We have two basic generations of each the Vivi Cap and Vivi Vial, made of that special proprietary heat-absorbing plastic.
The first-generation Vivi Cap1 is an FDA and CE registered cap that fits over an insulin pen and keeps the medication cool, at 28°C (or 83.4 degrees), which is the higher end of room temperature. The Vivi Cap1 is 3.5” long, with a diameter of about 1.18”, and weighs less than 2 ounces. It does not require any activation and works at all times by simply replacing the existing pen cap. This is our currently available product to purchase.
There is a version of Vivi Cap1 for each of the major prefilled pen brands: FlexPen and FlexTouch by Novo, KwikPen by Lilly and SoloStar by Sanofi.
Our second-generation Vivi Cool 8c has a rechargeable battery and keeps the insulin cooler, at 8°C (or 46 degrees). This should be available starting in April 2017, and is available for pre-order now.
We will also have the Vivi Vial and the Vivi Vial 8c, designed to keep insulin vials at the same temperatures as the above devices. Those can also be pre-ordered and should be available after April.
And what does the name "Vivi" refer to?
It's derived from the word "vivify," which means to give life to, brighten, or sharpen. It also means “life” in many Latin-based languages.
How exactly do the cap and vial tools work?
For the Vivi Cap1, it keeps the temperature of the drug in the pen cartridge at a safe injection temperature below 29°C (84.2°F) for minimum of 12 hours even in a constant environmental temperature of 37.8°C (100°F), when the device is placed inside a personal handbag – so the user can simply place it in its kit. The temperature regulation is passive and combines space grade thermal insulation with heat absorbent material. The cap is automatically ‘reactivated’ or ’filled up’ to provide safe storage conditions, whenever the ambient temperature gets below 26°C (78.8°F).
So whenever the user gets back home, or during the night when camping outdoors, when the temperature falls below 26°C (78.8°F) the device regains its protective capability without requiring the user to do anything special for that. This can go on and on for years.
Therefore the cap is good for daily use, to keep the temperature regulated in case one leaves the bag with the pen in the car for some time, as well as when going outdoors. The temperature assurance indicator is a light that shines green or red; to check, the user just presses a button at the tip of the cap to observe that light indicator.
What was involved in developing this device?
It was clear that the device solution would be made of insulation together with an element that can control the temperature. From the start, we knew that the key was finding a “super insulation” that we can use to make our products very small, keeping the overall form factor of the device as close as possible to pen cap.
Over a few months, each day we placed the prototypes in an oven, exposing them to high temperatures and later to refrigerators and freezers, to test their behavior at low temperatures. We also ran tests comparing the performance to the common water evaporation based devices.
Can you share any stories of too hot or cold insulin, where this device would've helped?
This past year, my wife volunteered at our children’s summer camp in Israel. The temperature during the day can get to 100°F accompanied with humidity of 60-80%. There were kids there who were using insulin pumps, and the insulin vials they carried to fill the pump reservoirs were exposed during the entire week time to such temperatures. Their parents told my wife that coming from the camp, they intended to throw away the insulin vials and get new prescriptions.
Certainly Vivi Vial could have helped them, making sure that the insulin they use is kept cool and not requiring them to throw it away. I also heard a story of a diabetes camp in the U.S. where they had to throw away all the insulin they had because the refrigerator did not work and froze the entire stock of insulin. Vivi Cap1 together with Vivi Vial could have assisted them, not requiring to refrigerate the insulin in use, while making sure it stays at the proper temperature.
What does your technology cost?
The Vivi Cap1 is available for $49.90.
Once available, the Vivi Vial will cost $59.90 (although we have a pre-order special of $49.90). Both of the 8c versions will be priced at $99.90, with a pre-order special price of $79.90.
Any plans to develop further features for these pen caps, along the lines of what Timesulin does with dose tracking? It appears that right now, pen users would have to choose between your cooling functionality and their "smarts"...?
Sure! Vivi Cap1 is just our first product in the family of current Vivi cooling devices, which include versions for vials as well as the Vivi 8c version for pens and vials that keep a pen or vial refrigerated for 24 hours. It also allows someone to carry pens and vials during long flights, until they reach a refrigerator without the need to use messy ice cubes.
Later, we are going to incorporate additional features to Vivi Cap that will allow remote tracking of injections and amounts of drug that remain in the pen/vial.
What kind of feedback have you gotten so far from the Diabetes Community?
Well, we have just started reaching out and so far the feedback is very positive. People most like the fact that the device provides around-the-clock protection without any bother.
With that, we're happy to be working with TempraMed for a giveaway to a few lucky winners...
